Trump Stunt Fallout: CNN Mulls Booting Kathy Griffin From New Year’s Eve Show, Casino Cancels July Gig

Entertainment Weekly reports:

CNN has expressed disapproval of comedian Kathy Griffin’s gruesome photo depicting her clutching President Trump’s severed head and said it is “evaluating” whether she will continue to participate in the network’s annual New Year’s Eve coverage.

“We found what she did disgusting and offensive,” a CNN spokesperson said in a statement Tuesday evening. “We are pleased to see she has apologized and asked that the photos be taken down. We are evaluating New Year’s Eve and have made no decisions at this point.” Griffin has cohosted CNN’s New Year’s Eve Live for 10 years running with Anderson Cooper, who also denounced her stunt.

  • Silver Badger

    No good deed goes unpunished.

  • AmeriCanadian

And this, no doubt, is why she made such a pleading apology.

  • jefe5084
    • safari

      PickyPecker’s evil cousin?

  • bkmn

This is called the consequence of having free speech. The right wingers don’t get this.

    • Marty Hodas

I don’t think right-wingers are questioning Griffin’s right to express herself. Lately, the right has been pretty good on free speech. Free speech used to be a left-wing issue, but not anymore. The so-called deplatforming we see on campuses is coming from the left, isn’t it?

      • Oscarlating Wildely

The right lost its position yet again on free expression the second that the curtain went up on Hamilton and a sitting president castigated it.

Also, there is nothing more American than the right of expression. For students to walk out in protest of a man who has thrown civil rights for LGBT people in the dustbin of his backassward Hoosier state is not silencing his speech. He still spoke. Students (and faculty) refused to acknowledge that he had earned a platform for speech.

Thousands of people want to earn a position to be able to address a college audience. Milo, Coulter, Pence at all can indeed be judged to not have earned that privilege.

      • MonochromeMouse

That is completely different, the people being denied a platform by the “left” are encouraging violence and harassment against minorities in the speeches they planned to give , Kathy Griffin held a decapitated effigy of trump like people have done for every single president America has ever had, and every single leader, king, lord, or anything higher than a peasant since literally the beginning of human history.

      • You’re conveniently forgetting that several states have passed laws limiting the ability of citizens to protest. As for campuses, that’s a few universities full of the kind of kids that have lived in a liberal bubble their whole lives. Most college students are struggling to keep up with school work and two part time jobs and don’t have time to protest jack shit. This is a right-wing talking point these days and it’s not like these protests don’t happen but they are rare and atypical of what is going on at most colleges.

        • Marty Hodas

No, it’s not a talking point. It’s a serious issue. And left-wing attacks on free speech come from Democratic leaders, not just college kids. Portland mayor Ted Wheeler just yesterday said “hate speech is not protected by the First Amendment.” He made this statement as he was calling for the cancellation of permits for two alt-right rallies.

  • Lazycrockett

6 weeks let along 6 months no one will remember this. She will be hosting NYE with Anderson.

    • Ragnar Lothbrok

IDK, the trumpanzees will never ever shut up about this

      • M Jackson

In time we’ll all have stopped hearing them, I know I already have.

      • Lazycrockett

They will be too busy focusing on whatever other shiny glittery thing that comes up.

      • bambinoitaliano

Those gas bags haven’t stop for years. This is just one that get trampled along with the rest.

      • Oscarlating Wildely

        They never shut up period.
And then the poo gets thrown.

    • bambinoitaliano

Not so much forgotten rather another celebrity will up his or her game to buried the stunt du jour.

    • ChrisInKansas

I really really hope this is true.

  • Rex

If Trump’s still in office on 12/31/17, New Year’s Eve should just be cancelled.

    • bambinoitaliano

Such optimist. Let’s see if we can survive the month of June.

    • Uncle Mark

If Trump is still in office on New Year’s Eve, I want Kathy to celebrate and bring the severed Trump head. (I can only imagine the “inappropriate” things she will do with it.)

    • What do you think will happen between now and 12/31 that will remove Trump from office? The GOP is NOT going to impeach him and even if the House did so there are not 67 votes in the senate to remove him from office. He’s not going to resign. Yes, those things SHOULD happen but the Republicans are in charge so they won’t.

  • Ragnar Lothbrok

    Consequences

    • AmeriCanadian

I like Tatianna’s phrase better: Choices.

  • Jay Mills

So publicly threatening the life of your opponent is still okay? Got it.

  • Ginger Snap

Wasn’t this “just a joke” you know the favorite line of the GOP when they do anything vile?

    • GayOldLady

It was a joke, but Kathy should have known you cannot make this sort of joke about a sitting POTUS. She’ll survive this, but it will take a while and a Trump impeachment or resignation for her to fully bounce back.

      • bambinoitaliano

I don’t believe her career will be hurt deeply. For one she is not at the top of the food chain. Her audience are not mainstream never mind the snow flakes. There’s very few corporate sponsorship on her act. She will just tour within her big cities circuit or write a book about this whole episode while it still in the radar of the public.

      • Lakeview Bob

Let’s not forget the lynching drawings as well as watermelon and ape drawings that the Obamas had to endure. Some of these drawings were forwarded by politicians. But I do agree that Kathy was wrong.

        • GayOldLady

I’ll never forget that. We shared some of those lynching pics on another thread earlier this morning. The GOP ate that shit up and I don’t think I ever heard any of them denounce those drawings or pictures. Most of that stuff was done by unidentified people who called themselves, “teaparty patriots” so there was no one to hold accountable. Still, I’ll never forget it!

          • Skokieguy [Larry]

And how many Republicans retweeted these types of things, which makes them complicit (also a new fragrance…)

          • GayOldLady

            True that!!!!

          • Ernest Endevor

I think it’s the image of her holding the head that tipped it over the edge. The image said “I would personally do this.” There’s also an element of “Look at how outraged I am!” that seems exploitative. And also the blood. Had it just been the head I’m not sure the reaction would have been the same. But given the news re the Paris Accord, she could be entirely forgiven come 5 pm.

          • Stephen Elliot Phillips

Well plenty of known righties called for 2nd amendment solutions to obama……but they didnt even get a pat on the wrist for their hate

          • GayOldLady

Trump called for a 2nd amendment solution to Hillary.

“Hillary wants to abolish, essentially abolish the Second Amendment,” Trump said to boos from the crowd. “By the way, if she gets to pick her judges, nothing you can do folks,” he then added. “Though the Second Amendment people, maybe there is, I don’t know.”

      • james1200

What I hate is it allows the right-wing assholes, who already have a persecution complex, to claim victimhood again.

        • Oscarlating Wildely

They do that anyway! We do it, we are snowflakes. They do it, it’s because we’re offensive.
I’m sick of their fucked up hypocrisy.

          • james1200

Whenever some of my “friends” start on Facebook, when I wanna piss ’em off, all I have to do is ask them if they want a “safe space” from me and I apologize if I “triggered” them. It always makes them insane, lol.

          • Oscarlating Wildely

Good on you. Good to also quote Hamilton. Their VP and President all but melted over a musical.

          • I’ve taken to telling some of them “Happy Holidays” and asking if they’re triggered. If they react badly, I just say, “Yeah, you triggered.”

Yes, I’ve gone completely evil, it seems.

        • CanuckDon

And they are the masters at milking anything like this….something to do with many of their extreme, overbearing personalities and their faithful buddies who cowardly always agree with them.

          • james1200

Hannity is gonna get a week of shows out of Kathy now, before he goes back to attacking poor Seth Rich’s memory.

        • His Holy-Shit the Donald

The best line to shut them up so far is “what else can she do?” If they started with imprisonment, I just told them that’s not up to her.

        • GayOldLady

And they’re so good at it.

      • MonochromeMouse

People make that sort of “joke” about presidents all the time though, literally every single president this country has ever had has been executed in effigy, it’s been going on throughout all of human history in every single culture.

        • GayOldLady

You’re right, but her’s took it to a new level of blood and gore and her profile is higher than the citizen teabaggers who spent 8 years hanging Obama in effigy. I’m sorry for her that she made the decision to do it, but free speech comes with a price. Trump won’t go the way of Mussolini or Ghadafi or Saddam Hussein, he’ll be impeached or he’ll resign for health reasons (dementia) and disappear from the public eye forever. I feel bad for her because she feels the way we all do about Trump, but it was a bad decision.

  • John30013

CNN’s hypocrisy on this is astounding, given that they employed Corey Lewandowski, a man who *actually* assaulted an *actual* person.

    • Lakeview Bob

      Damn good point.

    • And who was getting paid $20,000 a month from a presidential candidate with the stipulation that he couldn’t say anything bad about that candidate. It’s one thing to bring on partisan hacks as guests. It’s another thing to pay them when they legally have no option for independent commentary.

Yup. The network that helped get 45* elected thinks they found ethics.

    • His Holy-Shit the Donald

Condemning her more today only keeps this in the news & distracts it from the filthy orange baboon. I gotta give it to the vile conservatives, they really know how to milk this story for their audience.

Meanwhile, the Montana guy already went into oblivion. What has he been doing since his “win”?

      • John30013

Sending out fundraising appeals on behalf of the GOP candidate in Georgia’s district 6 special election (to fill the congressional seat that Tom Price used too hold).

Note that the most recent poll I’ve seen had the Democratic candidate ahead (which is somewhat surprising).

        • His Holy-Shit the Donald

You’re in GA or that district? THANK YOU!!!
If that Jewish teenager wins, the GOP will be extra motivated to get rid of their orange supremacist. Keep in mind though, losing by 0.1% has the same effect as losing by 90%.
          AGAIN, THANK YOU!!!

          • John30013

I’m in Georgia, but not that congressional district. (I’m represented by the stellar asshole Jody Hice.)

Jon Ossoff’s lead in the latest pool was a real surprise to me, and tells me that Trump is hurting the GOP, especially in competitive districts (of which there are few…).

    • But it’s okay for Republicans to threaten and even commit acts of violence but if a Democrat does it they need to be banned!

    • CNN’s been useless for years. The nail for me was when they hired Santorum.

Nailed it. Mock grabbing by the head – WRONG. Real grabbing by the pussy – PRESIDENT!

    • His Holy-Shit the Donald

There’s NOTHING we can do to that orange baboon right now but STOP apologizing & condemning this comedian would be the 1st step.

Dont’ get me started with the purist, self-loathing liberals “this is why Trump won. People are repulsed by the left”

Gimme a break. If the trumpanzees ever cared about human decency, they would’ve have voted for the orange to begin with.

  • Skokieguy [Larry]

Just like Billy Bush losing his job and Trump becoming Prez.

Der Spiegel publish on their fucking covers equally graphic images.

    • Oscarlating Wildely

Americans have notoriously delicate sensibilities in terms of images. Except war. We own that shit.

      • Yeah, we censored the worst pics from the Iraq War. I remember once in Germany standing on a train platform and one of the workers ran up to me with a front page story of a woman and child with blood all over them from Iraq (this was 2003) demanding that I explain this. “I voted for Gore.” was the only response I could think of on the spot. We are squeamish about boobs and fake blood but think nothing of bombing the shit out of civilians. (Americans seem to think we didn’t kill any civilians in Iraq. Seriously. How would that even be possible???)

  • CJAS

The right’s infinite capacity for hypocrisy aside, this stunt was stupid and self indulgent . She gave them exactly what they wanted: a powerful image they

regardless of cnn’s decision, i would definitely cast her in “medea” without any reservations.

  • Marty Hodas

Evaluating? She’s out. She was out the moment she released that photo.

Why – it’s not like she did something really heinous like show her tit at the Superbowl.

  • Tawreos

I guess I should stop working on enlarging the head prop to be big enough to replace the ball on New Years Eve?

    • djcoastermark

I would have an interesting Vlad the Impaler quality to it. carry on.

  • Uncle Mark

CNN is NOT going to boot her from New Year’s Eve !! When she did the first NYE show on CNN, it was considered “shocking” and controversial after what she said that evening. CNN pretended to be shocked & appalled, and kept talking about banning her from any such future shows. (CNN received a lot of news advertising and coverage over this “controversy” in the meantime.)

Then next NYE, they were advertising heavily about Griffin being on CNN…adding, “Who knows what she’s going to say this time…”. CNN doesn’t care about standards. It’s all about the viewers and advertisers.

    • Lazycrockett

People thinking CNN has standards is laughable. This is a network that encourages Lemon to get drunk on air.

      • Tawreos

Now I wish I had gone into broadcasting.

    • IDavid

Zactly, she will be a ratings superstar NYE. I mean really, how long can you hold a grudge against someone who’s simply trying to take out the trash? I think she just cut herself a nice big piece of American political pie that will elevate her to new heights eventually, especially if the Trumpster gets impeached.

      • Uncle Mark

Hell, if Trump is getting impeached by then, she’ll seek to have his severed head replace the ball-drop on NYE

      • Everything the right protests becomes instantly more popular. Kathy’s entire act is built around her being banned and protested. Okay this one will be harder to turn into comedy but I’m sure she will find a way. She always does. Her fans (including me) love it when she’s in trouble for telling Jesus to suck it or saying something inappropriate on live tv.

(Note: I thought the pic was in bad taste which is why I didn’t retweet it yesterday but it’s already been withdrawn and she’s already apologized. On to the next fauxrage.)

    • The problem for the right is that they such at boycotts. Trump supporters tend to be rural and lower income. Starbucks had nothing to worry about a right-wing boycott a couple of years ago. Yes, there are Republicans who go to Starbucks every day but they aren’t the reactionaries that would be upset because the company supported marriage equality. The economic power is in the cities which are blue, bluer and bluest. It’s the one place where liberals and moderates actually have leverage in our politcs. The electoral map is stacked in favor of Republicans but the media and money are in the cities and city people are so fond of discrimination against their friends and neighbors.

  • Michael R

We have a dangerously incompetent president in the White house who leans on a white supremacist that wants to destroy our country , but isn’t this easier to get upset about ?

  • Lazycrockett
  • bambinoitaliano
  • Taylor

I can’t believe she expected anything good to come out of this. It was an incredible stupid move, no matter how hypocritical the right is.

  • geoffalnutt

I stopped watching CNN ( except for Anderson) a long, long time ago. Kathy’s schtick has always been to flirt with ‘crossing the line’. This time she actually did it. She offered a proper apology, though.
Unfortunately she gave the Reich exactly what they want/need. The damage is much larger than the act.

  • Jeffg166

Oh, honestly a little sarcasm on Kathy’s part never hurt the Donald.

  • Uncle Mark

It should have been Rosie O’Donnell kicking/slapping around the severed Trump head

    • IDavid

Haha And she would NOT have apologized. But then her career seems basically over as far as I know so not much to lose.

  • MonochromeMouse

If she’s fired then i’m blocking CNN so that I don’t even accidentally flip past the channel and give them ratings, Kathy Griffin did nothing wrong and shouldn’t have apologized.

  • Gil

Well, at least the DNC has someone new to add to their limited roster of fall guys for the expected rout in 2018.

  • Rex

Anyone want to bet that Kathy Griffin holding Don’s severed head will be re-created for Halloween?

Oh please save me the faux outrage. As I have said before history shows us what happens when despots like Trump, Bannon, Tillerson and Sessions gain power. They dont give it up. Elections and impeachments and laws mean nothing to them. Power, control at all cost is everything to them. History also shows us what has to be done to eventually rid ourselves of fascist the likes we have in control now. She just , and she isnt the only one, are just reading the tea leaves of history.

    • Oscarlating Wildely

The fake outrage is disgusting and full of hypocrisy.
The only redemption I can imagine is if somehow someone were to note “Look, here’s the deal: our country is dumb. Really, really, really dumb. But we have to play to the stupid to get rid of the asshole in the White House and his minions in Congress. So, hold your nose and don’t let them get rallied up. Then, eventually, we’ll be able to put that shit in its place. So, no heads, cool?”

  • Stogiebear

And that is why when you decide to do something like her artistic statement you stand by it instead of backpedalling from it. The closest she should have gotten to an apology was to say that “if someone was offended by her statement that they have the right to be.”

  • David

While the pic was inappropriate, the staggering hypocrisy from the racist snowflakes on the right (who spent 8 years doing and saying things a whole lot worse) is truly mind numbing and pathetically predictable.

I don’t agree with the photos. I just love how quickly they’ve put that part of things in the past so they could be so outraged that someone would do such a thing to a sitting president. How outraged they are at the disrespect shown to the leader of our country.

“We found what she did disgusting and offensive,” a CNN spokesperson said in a statement Tuesday evening.”

We, the loyal majority of Americans who did not vote for this calamity, found the actions of CNN in covering every stupefying utterance of this repulsive cretin during the campaign to be “disgusting and offensive”. CNN has no standing to criticize the resistance to the fascists in the White House, no matter how controversial. They gave the Orange Menace hundreds of millions worth of free publicity, all to line their own pockets. Fuck you, CNN.

    • It’s in bad taste but it’s not like she treated Trump like a celebrity for a year and ran every bad story they could find against Clinton during an election. Bad taste is not a crime.

  • MikeBx2

I’m still inclined to believe this was all planned from beginning to end. It didn’t sully her reputation because shocking and offending is kind of what she does and got her lots and lots of publicity.

I support Kathy for her Freedom of Speech. She is also now free to accept the consequences for it. Do I think it was misguided? Yes. If you saw the picture itself without the commentary you wouldn’t even know it was Trump. The hair doesn’t even match.

EVEN if you have found the art work to be tasteless or tacky…. that is indeed an individual decision…. it is NOTHING in comparison to a “Presidential Candidate” advocating ACTUAL Violence against individuals, reporters and even his Opposition Candidate!!!

The real offense here is that it wasn’t funny. It’s the formal equivalent of those people who hanged Obama in effigy. It is simply lashing out in anger and it has no punchline. However, it is NOT (I repeat NOT), the moral equivalent. Hanging Obama in effigy has racist undertones. This President and his minions have said worse and done worse–exponentially. It’s time for our side to buck up and hold the line instead of hand wringing all the damn time! Stop worrying about what the alt-righties say (“she gave them ammunition!”), because false equivalency is their bread and butter. This very week they tried to deflect from the Portland terrorist attack by claiming he was a Bernie supporter. These are the people we are dealing with, so UNCLASP YOUR WRINGING HANDS NOW.

And Griffin apologized. I have yet to hear an apology from the Trumpanzees or 45 for anything offensive.

It had the artistic subtlety of a wanted: dead or alive poster. Her attempts to spin it as an “art” photo were, pathetic, and she obviously lacks an understanding of art as transcending it’s means. But she’s a shock comic which could very well account for that.

It’s the great circle of hypocrisy, the right-wing can be coarse, vile, hateful, even murderous without apology. The left can’t, full-stop. Every action, despite apologies etc…will be fully exploited and broadcast 24/7, talking-heads lining up to rant about it.

Griffin’s worst failure in all this is she succeeded in feeding the right-wing beast, it’s distracting the MSM on a large scale. Sort of the last thing we all need right now.

actually to be honest – Kathy’s looks more like a Plaque..you’d hang on the wall

Trump’s own words and actions betray the danger he presents to the nation and the repeated incompetence of his administration. Let’s not stoop to the same mindless level of his supporters. Stick with the facts … they are far more damning than any mud we might sling.

It is fun to mock Trump … how can we not? But we need to avoid things that aren’t true and things that aren’t salient.

I don’t want Trump dead. I want him impeached.

  • Natty Enquirer

It will all blow over by New Year’s. The public will become too distracted with the Trump investigation.

  • netxtown

CNN offended? Maybe we could get some photo’s AFTER the orb of some beheadings, or men being thrown off buildings, or tortured. But oh no no….let’s not let the world see what an uncaring bloody asshole donnie is. That would just be so wrong…… And i wonder what the two guys in Portland looked like as they bled out due to some trump asshole.

  • Ninja0980

When all is said and done, she will have suffered more consequences for her actions then any Republican who has done the same thing ever will.

    • rextrek1

heck, maybe IF she would have just GRABBED some Men by their DICKS…….made sure it was all recorded on audio/video …then run for President …the DEPLORABLES would Love her….

  • If only Trump would suffer the same fate (being fired) for any one of the many disgusting things he has done.

  • Jon Doh

What I find especially disgusting is her free hand wasn’t holding Jeffery Lord’s head.

The local casino was the one that cancelled Kathy’s show. I’d suggest going to the Route 66 Casino Facebook page and letting them know how disappointed you are in them caving to an episode of alt-right media hypocracy. https://www.facebook.com/rt66casino/
