Trump Wishes Muslims “Joyful Ramadan” In Statement That Mostly Says “You Need To Stop Being Terrorists”

The Washington Post reports:

President Trump issued a statement on Ramadan — a holy month of fasting and prayer for Muslims around the world — that focused primarily on violence and terrorism. His statement was a stark contrast from the Ramadan message President George W. Bush issued in the aftermath of Sept. 11, 2001, in which he emphasized how millions of Americans are Muslim and explained Islamic belief.

“At its core, the spirit of Ramadan strengthens awareness of our shared obligation to reject violence, to pursue peace, and to give to those in need who are suffering from poverty or conflict,” Trump wrote.

Trump noted recent terrorist attacks in the United Kingdom and in Egypt, “acts of depravity that are directly contrary to the spirit of Ramadan. Such acts only steel our resolve to defeat the terrorists and their perverted ideology.”

Trump also noted his recent visit to Saudi Arabia, where he gave a speech on terrorism. “I reiterate my message delivered in Riyadh: America will always stand with our partners against terrorism and the ideology that fuels it,” he said in the statement.

  • agcons

Surely Ramadan isn’t supposed to be joyful? Eid don’t know for sure.

    • Todd20036

I think it’s akin to wishing someone a “Happy Yom Kippur”

    • Ranger One

You people are so mean to Trump. Very unfair. But Happy Memorial Day anyway.

Because anybody here owes Trump jack spit?

It’s a bit like Lent, with lots of extra fasting (dawn to dusk), giving to charity and good works.

The UK Times Educational Supplement has handy downloadable charts with simple crayon drawings to school tRump.

  • Todd20036

I’m a bad person. If terrorists attacked the WH, I wouldn’t give a fucking crap except for maybe a few bystanders.

  • bkmn

What drives people to extremism? Adversity, mostly. So what is he trying to do? Cut aid to foreign countries that provides food, fresh drinkable water and healthcare that prevents some of that adversity.

    • bkmn

And I should add, killing civilians while bombing indiscriminately to kill the actual terrorists – killing someone’s family also creates a lot of extremists and Trump has told the military to be less concerned about civilian casualties.

      • David Walker

“Kill their families,” I think was mentioned, or at least implied.

    • Moebym Reborn

I doubt Trump or most of his fans have the intellectual heft to make that connection.

The ones who can connect the dots simply don’t care.

    • Skokieguy [Larry]

Sort of like the good work the Clinton Foundation is doing. -Well if there’s any money left over from Hillary stealing it all to pay for the hitmen for all the people she murderalized. And gay Soros Muslim sex parties don’t come cheap. But there must be at least a little money that paid for a condom or two for a poor country, right?

      • David Walker

What? And risk losing the all-important Catholic vote?

  • CottonBlimp

Funny how Trump never releases statements decrying the violence of his party and his supporters.

  • Hue-Man

    I learned something this week.

Eid al-Fitr falls at the end of June in Canada and signifies the end of Ramadan, the month where Muslims fast from dawn until dusk. Eid al-Adha, or the Festival of Sacrifice, marks the story of Abraham’s willingness to sacrifice his son Isaac to obey God.

    • TuuxKabin

      Gorgeous and educational stamp.

  • BlindBill

“He wrote” ….. Hahahahahahahaha. He released the statement, but he obviously did not write it.

        • vorpal 😼

Also accepted and endorsed by Christian scripture. It’s right there in the Talmud, which is shared by all three Abrahamic trash piles.

          • Marty Hodas

Being gay is legal is Israel. It’s legal in much of the Christian world too, and even in countries where it’s not legal, at least it’s not a capital crime. But in the muslim world they are killing our brothers and sisters!!! For god’s sake, why are we all so indifferent to this? You gotta stand up to this shit. You can’t go around saying “well we’re not so great either.”

          • vorpal 😼

I agree that it is a travesty that being gay is a capital crime under Muslim Sharia law.

Don’t think for a second that if Christian Dominionism came to rule that it wouldn’t be the same. Jamaicans are largely Christian-based in their beliefs and they turn a blind eye to the murder of “batty boys” and transwomen.

Same god, different stupid. We need to educate people early enough to realize what bullshit ancient mythology is and to accept diversity.

Stop defending any of these festering hateful mythologies.

Even his ghost writer goes off on crazy tangents. What a loser. Also, fantastic job on getting into bed with the Wahhabist House of Saud. The ones who use oil money to fund the radicalization of western Muslims. Maybe if Iran donated $100 million to Ivanka the President would deliver a contrary message expressing the virtues of Shiite Islam?

    • Gigi

On Topic: From the Toronto Star. This is why some won’t “stop being terrorists.”

“The images are merciless: Iraqi detainees slung from ceilings by their wrists like rag dolls; a blindfold to hide the next torturous blow, a gag to muffle the screams.

A glance jolts the sickening memory of Abu Ghraib prison, circa 2003, when the United States army and the CIA let their humanity slip away.

Yet here they are again, 14 years later — damning images from the ongoing battle of Mosul that incinerate the fog of war, revealing physical abuse, torture and the murder of Sunni Arab Iraqis perpetrated by a unit of American-trained, coalition-equipped Iraqi commandos on the front lines in the war against Daesh.”

  • MikeBx2

Terrorists have been responsible for killing many innocent people recently in various parts of the world and most of those who were murdered have been Muslims. Odd that he only mentions the attacks in the UK and Egypt.

  • Marty Hodas

Islamist terrorism is a serious problem all over the world. Only the muslim community can deal with it peacefully. If it’s left to the rest of the world to end islamist terrorism, it’s going to be too bloody to contemplate. I’m with Trump of this one.

    • Gigi

I think you’re not clear as to what Trump’s message is. He thinks he will be the one to crush ISIS. And he’s not planning on doing it peacefully.

Donald Trump vows to crush Isis and ‘replace chaos with peace’ during first foreign policy speech

The Republican frontrunner said the jihadist group would disappear ‘very, very quickly’ under his presidency

      • Marty Hodas

Then muslims better get to it quickly. Shout down the crazies that want to keep islam in the 7th century. Promote enlightenment ideals. As for the thousands and thousands of young muslims who are committed to terrorism? Sit them down, give them a good talking to. If that doesn’t work try a few smacks across the mouth or a boot in the ass. If they are still radical, turn them in.

    • Karl Dubhe

Unless the why is dealt with, and the why is not a solely Muslim issue, terrorism will continue.

Not just from the Muslim terrorists, either.

      • Marty Hodas

What’s the why? It sure isn’t poverty. There have been plenty of well-off terrorists. Well-educated too. It can’t be American foreign policy. The whole world has been subject to it at one time or another, yet only the islamists have resorted to large-scale terrorist attacks.

        • Karl Dubhe

Force the Israelis to make peace with the Palestinians. Their paranoia is harming everyone in that region.

And yes, poverty and oppression do factor into making terrorists. So to does bombing everyone in order to kill a few people.

Ask the Irish what it took for them to stop killing the English. It wasn’t a demand that only the one side lay down their arms.

          • Marty Hodas

Israel is paranoid? Palestinians have nothing, yet they attack Israel regularly. Savage, terror attacks on civilians, young and old alike. Imagine if they had all the benefits of sovereignty. It’s not paranoia to prevent a state like that right across your border, it’s survival.

          • Karl Dubhe

No. It is paranoia, it’s also racism.

I’m sorry, man. I don’t believe the Israelis want to have peace with their neighbours. They ‘negotiate’ with the Palestinians like the Austrians ‘negotiated’ with the Serbs in 1914.

Israeli leaders refer to the ‘Arabs’ as if they’re Nazis. They call them snakes. There are open calls for genocide against the Palestinians. From cabinet level politicians in Netenyahu’s government.

For every Israeli who has died of terror, there are a hundred Palestinian dead. Who’s killing whom? Who’re the real terrorists?

          • Marty Hodas

Wait, you think there is some kind of moral equivalence here? The Israelis don’t target civilians, the arabs do. That’s the end of that.

          • Karl Dubhe

Yes. They do. The death toll in the last massacres in Gaza prove that.

Israelis can and do get away with shooting people dead.

        • The Irish Republican Army aren’t Muslims. The King David Hotel was not bombed by Muslims. The Gang of Four were not Muslims. The Reichstag was not burned by Muslims. The Russian progroms were neither ordered nor carried out by Muslims. Native Americans were not the victims of genocide perpetrated by Muslims. The Spanish Inquisition was not conducted by Muslims . . .

          • FAEN

There you go with your facts 😉.

    • BuffaloDan

I tend to disagree on the assertion that “only the Muslim community can deal with it peacefully.” I attended a (new-to-our area) immigrant’s talk (at our library. TuuxCabin, et al.! Libraries are meeting places, too! 🙂 ), and the speaker described his internment in a Burmese prison camp. He was trying to escape because he was _only vaguely_ critical of that regime, having _only_ attended some protests. Some of the audience tried to explain how he “could have been” a terrorist, easing his way to the US in order to commit whatever type of nefarious deeds. This gentleman was in internment/relocation camps _for more than a decade_. In my mind, that’s a _long_ way to go to sneak into the US.

I don’t think he was Muslim (didn’t ask; don’t care), but some of the audience seemed to assume he was. Regardless, it became to be discussed by the assembly that _surely_ there are terrorists here. It is ridiculous to think that only 19 people sneaked in for 9/11; another two for the Boston Marathon; two in California; and those other hordes of Saracens for the Bowling Green Massacre.

They must be here — in piles! But Americans of all stripes can accept immigrants, the disgruntled, and _people_. Isn’t it nice to believe that by being normal humans, helping out people, and introducing potential terrorists to the wealth of America and the West, that they might think that maybe they shouldn’t blow stuff up? (It feels very Pascal’s Razor, in a way.) It might not be perfect (and, hells no to that!), but there might still be something of that “American Dream.” And everyone’s welcome to it, ‘f ya don’t fuck it up for anyone else…

(Damn! That’s a lot more teary-eyed than I wanted. But, yeah, _shit_, to hear that guy talk…! Damn! If my grandparents could come here, why can’t others? Both of my families were seen as coming from groups that were “clearly” anarchists and terrorists a hundred years ago [Italian — killed their king, 1901; and Eastern European — who assassinated a fair number of tsars and archdukes]. Why not others now? Why?)

      • TuuxKabin

WTF are you going on about? Did I say libraries are not for meeting places? I attend weekly, sometimes twice a week, with different groups. You made no sense, smiley face or not.

        • BuffaloDan

(Not at all! A fellow librarian here. Forgive if I was unclear — and certainly muddled in my thoughts. Damn, no: Libraries are _fantastic_!

          (Forgive, forgive…!!!)

          • TuuxKabin

No, no. I’m sorry. My apology. I went back and kept reading both our comments then deleted. Sorry you read it before I did that. I realized I was over reacting, tho not clear as to why. We’re in agreement. Libraries ARE fantastic. Sorry I didn’t think it more clearly thru. Hugs. And what a great a forum to have at a public library. We receive surveys as to why our local NYPL should receive part of Brook Astor’s bequeaths to our branch. I always take part in it, and throw some positive to the other two within walking distance of home. I cringe every time hours are cut.

To Quote a president: “very sad”
The Current president and his advisors know nothing about anything outside their own purview. Ramadan is a month of reflection, self discipline and cleansing. To wish anyone “A joyful Ramadan” is at cross purposes and shows a woeful ignorance of the Islamic tradition – one of the few things in Islam that I can support. Very Sad!

  • Telling Muslims to have a “joyful Ramadan” is like telling Catholics to enjoy Lent.
