MIAMI: World OutGames Abruptly Canceled Amid Financial Turmoil As Athletes Begin Arriving [VIDEO]

The Miami Herald reports:

The long-planned sporting and cultural event known as the World OutGames, a 10-day LGBTQ-themed meeting advertised as a spectacular gathering of athletes from around the world, unraveled Friday about 24 hours before the opening ceremonies.

Most of the sports events, along with opening and closing ceremonies, were canceled at the very last minute amid a flurry of financial woes and possible impropriety. By Friday night, Miami Beach Police and the State Attorney’s Office announced they were opening a fraud investigation “due to the potential misappropriation of funds.”

Financial documents submitted by OutGames to Miami Beach City Hall in March show discrepancies that caused alarm in the Beach’s administration. The documents show the OutGames maintained a low cash balance despite a slew of fundraising commitments. The numbers still don’t add up, which led to the investigation.

From the event’s Facebook page:

It is with deep regret that due to financial burdens, World OutGames must cancel opening and closing ceremonies and sports programming with the exception of aquatics, country western dance and soccer. The Human Rights Conference and cultural programs will continue as planned. We thank everyone who has supported the effort and apologize to those who will be impacted by this difficult decision. – Board of Directors, World OutGames Miami.

Come on gay event organizers– don’t be a Trump.

is this why we can’t have nice things?

Ten queens trying to coordinate something.

        Recipe for disaster.

        • Prost Seattle

I bet they spen all the money designing the costumes for the opening ceremonies.

        • KCMC

IKR?! Regional Pride planning seems similarly cursed

  • Imma gonna stick over in the Kushner thread for now…

  • Rebecca Gardner

That’s sad. I know how hard they trained for an event like this.

    • liondon#iamnotatraitor

Unless the facts say different.. either they appointed someone pretty yet incompetent or petty infighting and egos killed it.

      • Jeffg166

Sounds more like someone helped themselves to the funds. This seems to be an on going problem with gay groups. The book keeper or head of the organization steals the money. It’s happen to a number of gay organizations in my town.

        • Daveed_WOW

          Cocaine. It’s a helluva drug.

        • bambinoitaliano

It’s quite common to hear about this kind of corruptions. There is no shortage of cookie jar raiders that are attracted to work in events like that. Look no further than IOC and FIFA. They are all self serving organizations to enrich a few in the guise of amateur sports.

          • Randy Left Brooklyn

This is why you need people running the show who believe in good financial control, and you need people in the community to stop apologizing for them when the board does not provide that.

          • bambinoitaliano

Ideally on paper you are looking for capable volunteers to run event like this. It’s a thankless job. The one who can devote that much time and dedication usually are the one who sees the opportunity to plump up their resume or immediate financial reward. Rarely 100% out of altruistic intention.

          • Randy Left Brooklyn

It isn’t a completely thankless job, as it can be a way to promote yourself socially, something that is much appreciated by those whose incomes exceed $250,000. Those are the people who usually get on the boards, and they should be making sure that the money does not go astray, or they should not take the position. They should have enough business savvy and connections to make sure the money is handled appropriately.

        • Randy Left Brooklyn

And yet, when anyone question any gay orgs financial activities the response to often is “How dare you!” and “No one could have done any better.”

The boards of directors need to be held accountable for what happens in these operations. If they can’t get socially prominent people to serve on these boards, then maybe we should not have the event. The boards are there to provide oversight, not to inflate the egos of some conceited jerk. If the people on these boards can’t do that then they should not be on the board.

          • lattebud

And you should always have an accountant or financial savvy person on the board.

          • Randy Left Brooklyn

More than one, to keep things honest.

          • dagobarbz, fine Italian shoes

It’d be silly to question the ability of people who can throw huge parades every year. Those folks are certainly competent to organize other events.

Two big ticket events cancelled days before they were to begin, gotta be shenanigans!

          • Randy Left Brooklyn

Do you ever look at the financial records of these groups? Their 990s should be posted on their websites. If you contribute without looking at how the money is spent you are part of the problem.

        • lattebud

Having served on boards of non-profits, many times the board is just a rubber stamp for the leadership, which they put on a pedestal. Instead of holding the management of the organization accountable, performing an independent review of the books, and having strict policies – the board just agrees with whatever the leaders want and do, until there is a crisis.

For example, why did the board allow Michael Weinstein, CEO of the AIDS Healthcare Foundation, spend $4.6M on a ballot proposition on land use?

          http://www.latimes.com/opinion/editorials/la-ed-aids-healthcare-development-20170225-story.html

          • Randy Left Brooklyn

Another example is San Francisco AIDS foundation. They lost $914,156 on approximately $8.4 million in investments from 7/1/15 to 7/1/16. During that time period the S&P 500 rose from 2094 to 2148. That is a difference of a loss of 10.9% versus a gain of 2.6% in the S & P. They also lost over $300,000 the prior year on a similar amount of investments.

They spend over $1.5 million on lobbying activities, which is a discrete way to funnel money to their political friends, and they spend over 40% of the money they raise from direct mail to their direct mail firm year after year, which is high, especially given that their receipts keep dwindling rapidly from their mailings. If they aren’t getting new contributors, which they aren’t in any meaningful way, the list costs should be low.

They also spent $488,000 on their CEO, for an organization that has a budget of less than $30,000,000, Over 2/3 of which comes from federal and state government grants.

        • catherinecc

Professional fraudsters target unsophisticated non profits. They made off with something like 50k from a pride org in my city a few years back.

Sadly, it’s pretty easy to do, as good financial governance is not a given in many nonprofit orgs, gay or straight.

      • Both. It’s been the usual course for the WOG board. Those who know how to organize and run events like this are shoved out to the perimeter and not allowed any real say in the decision-making, while those with star-status but no fucking clue are the ones with the checkbook. Though I will say, this is the first WOG where it has gotten THIS far out of hand.

    • Gerry Fisher

A very successful bar reopening led to the bar being shuttered a year later due to an unreported DUI by the owner and the same owner selling drugs on the premises. A coach in our gay softball league had to resign because he bought a couch for his living room with the team’s money.

My mind goes to this situation being similar, only on a much grander scale. “Con Jobs”: they’re so in fashion these days. 🙁 Sociopathy big and small.

[Miami Beach City Manager] ‘Morales’s letter yesterday reveals that the games had been struggling for the better part of a year to meet the basic financial benchmarks the city had set for the 10-day event. The games were supposed to take place all across Miami-Dade County, including in Lummus Park, Soundscape Park, Flamingo Park, the Loews Miami Beach Hotel, the Colony Theater, the Fillmore Miami Beach, and the National Hotel.
But there were warning signs for quite a while that the OutGames, which has been staged three previous times in other countries since 2006, was having trouble raising basic levels of money.’

I’m a bit lost when it comes to the history — but wasn’t “Out Games” an offshoot of some dysfunction/conflict within the then “Gay Games” organization?

Apologies if I have this all wrong.

    • Craig Howell

Yes. Gay Games are still going strong.

    • Natty Enquirer

Yes. In 2006, the Gay Games canceled its commitment to Montréal and moved to Chicago. Those who were invested in the Montréal event organized their own program under the name OutGames. I happened to participate there.

      • another_steve

“A funeral that didn’t happen” is an intriguing concept. Trust me — blockbuster Hollywood films have had as their theme much less than that.

        And yes, “farshtunkene” works there.

        It means “stinky” or “filthy.”

That’s awesome. It certainly wasn’t easy meeting other gay dead heads back in the late 80’s early 90’s, at least for me, partly because I was a closet case. But I am having a blast seeing D&C these days, my hubby has been grooving on it, and John Meyer is drawing out all kinds of gays. It’s a beautiful new world and the music never stopped.

    • I got a call earlier today from the City of Seattle, asking me to do the blessing/opening ceremony on June 1st to kick off Pride Month. I’ll do a Native American thingie. I do a lot of opening of events. When I was a kid, I’d go with my mom and in those days, the event coordinator would have set up a big ribbon and then hand her large scissors to cut the ribbon. At the end of the event, the coordinator would come to get the scissors and she’d always say, “Oh, no–you gave them to me. They’re mine now.” She had quite a collection. They were pretty good for cutting buckskin, but even better for fabric because she’d make our clothes. I wonder if I’ll ever get asked to cut a ribbon. Maybe that’s too “20th century…”

      • JCF
        • I know! I had to be in NYC for a week to lead workshops, then flew to Arizona to ship all my things to Seattle and close out, and then return permanently to the Emerald City, so my time on JMG has been limited. My husband’s dad (long-deceased now) had a penchant for collecting towels from hotels. Hanging on the rack in my kitchen is a dish towel with the words “Holiday Inn” inscribed on it.

Turns out (or so I learned from my husband, much to my horror) that we have a box-load of them in the basement.

Decades-worth of his father’s stays in the Holiday Inn hotel chain.

        • Prost Seattle

We were a motel6 kinda family. I think their towels disintegrated in moisture.

      • Prost Seattle

Most gays have the most fabulous mothers, whether by birth or we searched one out. Your mama sounds amazing.

        • She was a hoot 🙂 One of my favorite moments was when I was driving her to a forestry meeting (she was on the tribal council for nearly 40 years) and we were talking about one of my uncles, who lived openly with his male partner of nearly (at the time) twenty years. I knew the name in our language for people who were “different.” I can’t type it on this site because our language has sounds that don’t exist in English, but I wanted to “reverse translate,” so I asked her how she’d translate our word into English. She thought for a moment and said, “Queer.”

This was the period of time when “Queer” (as in Queer Studies) was all the rage in academic circles, and I laughed that my mom was so up to date. Although on a more serious level, I never quite knew where she picked up some of her English. Her English would sometimes go wonky, and there were several words in English she could never quite wrap her tongue around. In elementary school (common at the time), my American Indian accent was classified as a speech defect, and I spent 3 years in speech therapy, in an attempt to eradicate any trace of accent in my own speech.

The “business community” is why Atlanta is the biggest city in the south, not Birmingham/Memphis/New Orleans all of which were about the same size in 1960 but played nice (publicly) with the racists. Atlanta publicly decried racism while continuing to support institutional racism. Some politicians are cynical enough to do that today as well.

The suit filed by batshit crazy mother patricia smith, the mother of slain state department officer Sean Smith.

Guess she won’t be getting to “lock her up”, since she should be mad at Ryan and republican congressmen for cutting funding for embassy security. And the bitch believed Fox’s lies, and now she’s a kook, carrying around her dead son as an excuse to attempt to make Hillary responsible for something she did not do.

O/T: Jukesgrrl posted this on Political Wire. I was just going to say “a poster on PW,” but since I’ve seen her here on the Kushner thread talking about it, I thought I’d name her (and I told her, below, that I was going to quote her).

Rep. Jim Himes (D-CT) is on Rachel’s program suggesting that since Kushner had this contact during the transition, not after Trump was inaugurated, that could be a mitigating circumstance to any charges of nefarious motives. A Democrat! If he can come up with an excuse like that, imagine what the Republicans will say. “Jared was just a private citizen trying to help pave the way for better relationships with countries Obama ignored.” I hope the FBI and the Senate are trying harder. The House investigation is going to be utterly worthless.

    I responded:

And the total SECRECY?! What’s the goddamned excuse for THAT?!

Imagine what Republicans would make of this if anyone in a Democratic administration did anything remotely like it!

I cannot get over the way they are bending over backwards for these TRAITORS!

And this is a DEMOCRAT speaking!

It’s just like the Democratic Senator talking about bringing back the filibuster for SCOTUS when or IF we ever get the Senate back: 51 votes for the GOP to get someone on that Court, but SIXTY for us!! And it’s a Democratic Senator suggesting the return of the filibuster after the act of SEDITION by the GOP majority to STEAL a seat and the use of the nuclear option to ram Gorsuch through!!

And people wonder why we LOSE, and why so many have nothing but CONTEMPT for liberals!!

    And:

And if it had happened AFTER 20 January, they’d find a goddamned excuse for why THAT was okay!

    • safari

The entire top of the executive and legislative branches need a cleaning

    • Sam_Handwich

I watched the Himes segment and wasn’t bothered by what he said. Throughout all this Dems on the two Intel comms have been very tight-lipped and disciplined, avoiding tipping their hand or dropping bombs. And that’s fine, because the IC and WH have been doing that job just fine.

With every passing day this shitshow gets more disturbing, and i think that congressional dems are taking the right approach politically. Once the shit hits the fan, Dems can concede their committees were aware of the facts but were letting the investigations run their course, while republicans will be left running in circles.

      • billbear1961

        Thanks, Sam!

I follow your reasoning, and I appreciate any effort to calm me down.

But I don’t understand why he felt the need to make lame EXCUSES for this appalling act of betrayal.

I couldn’t be more ANGRY or WORRIED than I am.

I am so frightened for this poor republic, so alarmed by the lack of FIERCE defenders fighting for her survival!

        • Sam_Handwich

well we do have some bulldogs in congress like Maxine Waters and Al Green who don’t mince words with this Russia bullshit. But they’re not on the intel comms, so they can speak more freely and are not so subject to criticism.

but like i said, if a congressperson is involved in an active investigation, the last thing they want is to make it appear partisan and start leaking stuff (as in the failed Benghazi witch hunt). they need to hold their cards as close as the republicans right now.

i think this is the biggest mess in our history.

          https://uploads.disquscdn.com/images/ca141bcbeeef625aaac191a6b0b075efeeed9f3c8df623ed6e051d6d5a6bb8b0.png

          • billbear1961

It IS–there is no precedent for this gross betrayal, the SCALE of the thing.

It’s not going to go away–you can SEE how GUILTY they are, just looking at their terrified behaviour and constantly shifting BULLSHIT narratives.

At least HALF the nation will NEVER accept the legitimacy of this utterly CORRUPT regime–things have simply gone too FAR!!

I think it’s reached the point where they can’t possibly cover ALL of it up without MANY people exploding in a RAGE. What I’m afraid of is that they will find some fall guys–people they will reward secretly, later on, for being willing to fall on their swords for higher-ups–or they’ll give blanket immunity to someone, like they did with Oliver North, and HE will take all the blame for higher-ups while remaining untouchable because of the immunity deal.

I fear Democrats may go along with all this, because even THEY may be afraid of what full exposure will lead to, of the political explosion such an unprecedented scandal may cause, of the damage it would do to the country’s reputation, how BADLY it would reflect on ALL politicians’ stewardship of the nation’s political institutions (although the way Trump is behaving, at home and abroad, THAT could easily lead to similar upheaval. He and his regime–and their henchmen in the GOP–are becoming the greatest threat to democracy and the national security that this country has EVER seen).

Sam, I don’t trust ANY of them, not really.

This republic is at the mercy of SCOUNDRELS and COWARDS.

And I am SICK AT HEART.

This is happening while OUR generation is in charge.

          • Max_1

    https://www.buzzfeed.com/jimdalrympleii/the-fate-of-national-monuments?bfsource=bbf_enus&utm_term=.htV0w0Jd4#.jcWrYra5W

“As the Trump administration closes in on what many expect will be
recommendations to shrink or even dissolve some national monuments,
defenders of the vast expanses of land and ocean are already gearing up
for a potentially monumental legal battle never before seen in the US.”

and to me, this is very interesting:

“In Maine, for example, Obama created the Katahdin Woods and Waters National Monument last August. The monument was unique because it was formed from land donated by Roxanne Quimby, founder of Burt’s Bees, and her family, rather than from existing federal land like many other monuments, such as Bears Ears.

Lucas St. Clair, Quimby’s son, told BuzzFeed News that the total donation included $20 million in funds to get the monument started and pay for infrastructure, as well as $80 million worth of land. The family is also raising an additional $20 million for the monument, he said.”They’re jeopardizing a $100-million investment in rural Maine,” St. Clair said of the review and potential changes to the monument. “This is a place that Trump won, and he really put a lot of cache in his ability to relate to the rural voters of America. And by doing this he’s turning his back on them.”

This private land is being donated expressly for natural purposes. Is there any way the donor can say “Nope, if it’s not wild, I get to keep the land. You sell this to private interests, I’ll sue your ass for fraud.”

But in the new one-party state that is replacing our democracy as we speak, rightists are ABOVE THE LAW.

That is the goal of the Executive coup underway, supported by the GOP majorities in Congress, the point of their blatant obstruction of justice.

Soon they will control the courts, and there will be nothing to stop them from committing ANY crime they like, right in front of our eyes. Even now they break ANY rules they don’t like, and NOTHING–not a goddamned fucking THING–is done to hold them ACCOUNTABLE!!

        It’s a goddamned FARCE!!

They are getting away with obstruction!

Interference in future elections will be WORSE than it was in 2016!

      I read the Guardian’s account of yesterday’s meeting…

That man needs to be put away somewhere safe. This isn’t the time to have a King George III as your head of state. Shit, even the 1770s was a bad time for that. 🙂

        England in 1819

        By Percy Bysshe Shelley

        An old, mad, blind, despised, and dying King;
Princes, the dregs of their dull race, who flow
        Through public scorn,—mud from a muddy spring;
Rulers who neither see nor feel nor know,
But leechlike to their fainting country cling
Till they drop, blind in blood, without a blow.
        A people starved and stabbed in th’ untilled field;
An army, whom liberticide and prey
        Makes as a two-edged sword to all who wield;
        Golden and sanguine laws which tempt and slay;
        Religion Christless, Godless—a book sealed;
A senate, Time’s worst statute, unrepealed—
Are graves from which a glorious Phantom may
Burst, to illumine our tempestuous day.

ICE has the worst karma and I hope they get what’s coming to them.

        • FAEN

Agreed. I can’t stand this new power they have. Under Obama there was discretion-it wasn’t perfect but at least they weren’t swooping non violent offenders off the streets like the Gestapo.

    • That_Looks_Delicious

She shouldn’t just be suing for $20k. Her lawyers should take it all the way to Sessions and SCOTUS, if possible, and the ACLU should get involved as co-counsel. But I know that the rightwing media would make life hell for her & her family if she did, so I understand if she settles.

    • zhera

      Horrible!

Question: Is there no database of US citizens that ICE can use? Shouldn’t they have known from the start that she is a citizen?

      • SoCalGal20

I would think there’s at least a database of naturalized citizens.

        • FAEN

          They’ve actually deported US citizens.

      • That_Looks_Delicious

Yes and Yes. But more importantly, ICE has nothing to do with bench warrants and should never have been involved in the first place. Somebody in the San Bernardino SD did something either against policy or just plain illegal. Ditto ICE.

        • zhera

My thought was that ICE have an alert or something on all Latin-sounding names popping up in various registers/databases. Highly illegal and discriminating but them don’t care about that any more.

From a poster on Political Wire:

WaPo is hitting it out of the park! I saw a NYT bureau chief from London interviewed on BBC, he was incredulous, proclaiming there was little evidence of Russian collusion and the loss of the election was all due to HRC poor showing. NYT is useless.

So, it’s ALL just a BIG coincidence, is it, NYT? All those communications–and in some cases, business dealings–with Russians that so MANY of his people have been so desperate to HIDE, Trump’s refusal to release his TAX RETURNS, his desperate obstruction of justice trying to shut down the investigation by firing Comey–“The pressure’s gone,” he told the Russians, after firing him.

What do you TAKE US FOR, you BASTARDS?!

Why are you aiding and abetting Trump’s COUP against the REPUBLIC?!

    • That_Looks_Delicious

Yeah, the NYTimes got scooped yesterday by everybody – Washington Post, Reuters, The Hill, … Last time I looked this morning, they still didn’t have the story about the Senate Intelligence committee requesting all the Trump campaign’s documents.

Sometimes it seems like the NYT has almost become provincial. It’s like if something doesn’t happen in NYC they don’t really have any interest in it. The ultimate local newspaper.

      • billbear1961

        They’re pathetic.

There are still some good columnists, but if THIS editor in London is anything to go by, they are led by SELLOUTS.

    • blackstar

I have read they are letting *trumpanzees adsorb all this a little at a time so they don’t rebel or riot etc.

    • BobSF_94117

Why are you taking “some poster”‘s comment as true?

      • billbear1961

I’ve seen his posts. He’s a regular and seems sound.

And it jives with Haberman of the NYT making EXCUSES for Kushner yesterday: “He was just doing it because he wanted to talk to the Russians about Syria.” (Even if true, that is NO EXCUSE for asking the Russian ambassador for permission to use their secure link with the Kremlin to communicate IN SECRET with the Russian government. That is ESPIONAGE.)

It’s also consistent with their recent hiring of a right-wing climate denier and a weekend column, “Send us your positive thoughts about Trump.”

There have also been pathetic op-eds making LAME excuses for someone intellectually and morally UNFIT for the presidency.

(IF the PW poster is a liar, it removes ONE charge against the paper.)

        • BobSF_94117

Haberman did not “make excuses”. She reported what she had heard from sources. This is what reporters are supposed to do. Now, we’ve certainly gotten into the habit of expecting commentary with everything, but what to think about it, whether to accept the explanation, is up to us, not to Ms. Haberman or anyone else. Her article respects and facilitates that process.

          • billbear1961

If I simply repeat what McMaster said today in defense of Kushner without pointing out that no individual in this country has the right to set up a back channel of communication with a foreign power IN SECRET, attempting to HIDE his communications from the American government–that it is an act of ESPIONAGE to ask the Ambassador of a foreign government for permission to use his embassy’s secure link with his government so that I can send them messages without ANYONE in MY government knowing what’s being said–I fail UTTERLY in my job as a journalist.

Reporters are NOT just tape recorders or stenographers.

“Someone has said such-and-such, but we have GOOD reason to believe that’s false or unlikely. Their statement is suspect. Their arguments are full of holes. Here’s WHY we think so . . .”

THAT kind of statement is something we should hear from any GOOD reporter, whenever he or she can say it truthfully and offer SOLID reasons and EVIDENCE to back it up.

If ALL they EVER do is repeat what they are told without critically analyzing it, you might as well send children to do the job, or just MACHINES to record what is said.

Sadly, all too often they ARE nothing but tape recorders these days. Many have forgotten–if they ever KNEW–what it IS to be a REAL reporter.

They don’t even challenge obvious, baldfaced LIES.

            They’re a DISGRACE.

        • Snarky

Where did Haberman say that? The only reference I saw her make was to explain why Kushner wanted to set up the secret backchannel. She was in no way excusing him. And in their front page story on the Kushner revelation being the latest part of the growing WH crisis, the NYT acknowledges the WaPo broke the story but that they confirmed it independently.

“The Washington Post first reported on the suggestion on Friday, and three people informed about it confirmed it to The New York Times.”

I don’t see the NYT or the WaPo cowering or caping for the WH. Quite the opposite. Many in the journalism community say the two are duking it out every day for scoops and sources in some of the best coverage seen in years. Two links:

      • Snarky

I see you linked to the IJR. They’re known as a far-right propaganda and conspiracy site. I’d believe their stories and conclusions about as much as Breitbart. That IJR story references a supposed uranium deal that was often quoted by Trump and his followers. The WaPo gave it four pinnochios. Snopes says it’s false: http://www.snopes.com/hillary-clinton-uranium-russia-deal/

        • GreatLakeSailor

They called it false because Hair Fury claimed falsely (because he’s a compulsive liar) that the uranium interests were given. They were sold while millions flowed to the Clinton Slush Fund and Bubba scored a $500k payday for a “speech” – aka a money laundered bribe – to grease the skids.

          • Snarky

Post hoc, erg propter hoc. You assume a causal relationship for two events because one occurred after the other, but there is no evidence. Did you read the Snopes link? It pretty much trashes the whole conspiracy theory. In brief, Clinton could neither veto nor approve the Uranium One deal. The uranium remains in the U.S., despite transfer of ownership. The donations timing claimed does not match for the supposed bribes. Here’s the link again, it’s thoroughly sourced. http://www.snopes.com/hillary-clinton-uranium-russia-deal/
