BRUSSELS: Husband Of Luxembourg’s Gay Prime Minister Poses With Other Spouses Of NATO Leaders

People Magazine reports:

While President Donald Trump has met with many male heads of government, First Lady Melania Trump has often mingled with their wives. But on Thursday, Mrs. Trump was introduced to the First Gentleman of Luxembourg.

Gauthier Destenay, the husband of Luxembourg’s Prime Minister Xavier Bettel, joined Trump and other spouses for a dinner while their significant others attended a gathering as part of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) conference in Brussels, Belgium.

Prime Minister Bettel, 44, and Belgian architect Destenay entered a civil partnership in 2010 and married in 2015 after Luxembourg’s legislators approved gay marriage. Bettel became the first openly gay Prime Minister of Luxembourg in December 2013, after an election campaign in which his sexuality was not a secret nor an issue.

  • Rex

Good to see barriers broken, and representation on a world wide stage.

    • KCMC
    • Chicago joe

I feel happy for them and so sad to live in such a weird backward political culture here in the US. My employer may want me to move to Dallas. When I think about that, I worry about my civil rights and indeed my physical safety.

    • narutomania

Particularly with Erdogan’s wife standing in the front wearing the hiyab, and Bettel’s husband standing in the back, tall and handsome.

    • DonnaLee

I’m happy he’s in the picture, but the layout of the picture leaves much to be desired. Did no one think to arrange anybody?

  • Tawreos

Melania almost looks happy without her husband around.

  • Remember when Jesse Helms unsuccessfully tried to block James Hormel from becoming US Ambassador to Luxembourg because he said Luxembourg would never accept a gay ambassador? Helms was wrong about that and so many other things.

The comments on Yahoo are predictably nauseating.

    • FAEN

I wish that bigoted asshole had been alive when NC’s marriage equality went into affect. I did love that people had left newspapers and defiant pro marriage pro LGBT letters on his grave.

    • Pat

I gave up on Yahoo a long time ago. It’s a sinkhole, but it keeps them off the streets hopefully.

      • BillysWilly

I had to give up too, it was so dark and depressing seeing what those sorry sacks of crap post. Such a horrible place they live in.

        • Pat

One of those places that make you want to take a shower after reading the posts. Just so much hatred and pleasure from trolling.

    • RemusL

Are they upset about Melania exposing her bare shoulders?

    • Robincho

      Wrong? Yes.
      Still dead? Also yes…

      • Phillip in L.A.

Someone else who is still dead is . . . the dead Scalia! Huzzah!

  • Jim Maloney

    Nice.

  • Christopher

    Erdogan’s wife looks “thrilled”.

I wonder how far up her butt that stick has reached?

  • houstonray

OT: Hillary is giving a WONDERFUL commencement speech at Wellesley right now. CNN and MSNBC are covering it.

    • FAEN

      Thanks.

    • JohnJay

I started watching, but had to stop. Got too sad, about what might have been.

    • Pat

      Thanks.

      • David Walker

She plagiarized some of it from Betsy DeVos’ commencement speech. I think I heard some choice words originally from Mel. /s

        • Pat

Hahahaha!!! If Betsy DeVos watched, her reaction would be “Wat???”

    • safari

I wonder if she is going to complain about how unfairly she’s been treated /s

      • FAEN

Nah. She isn’t a thin skinned whiny little bitch. That’s Cheeto’s job.

    • CanuckDon

Ohhh…now they cover one of her speeches. Seven or eight months too late.

  • ted-

    Beautiful

  • FAEN

    That’s lovely to see.

  • Jonathan Smith
  • Lars Littlefield

I presume that is Erdoğan’s wife that is dressed like a Denobulan tribble rancher from Star Trek?

  • Mike Solo

Another reason I love Luxembourg. When I was living in Germany, we would always go to Luxembourgh City for the movies as the cinema was nicer, and it was english with subtitles (German AND French… sometimes Dutch).

But the city is beautiful, as are the surrounding terrain (Vianden castle is incredible, a real life fairytale castle that closely resembles the one in Beauty and the Beast). The people are also incredibly welcoming, no matter what language you speak, as they can usually speak all of them.

  • Jonathan Smith
    • FAEN

      Awww

      • Ross

        I second that awww.

Man, but that’s a beautiful photo! It truly warms me to look at it.

  • Princess Lardass

I’d rather see Bill Clinton in that picture than Melania.

    • houstonray

      Sigh….yes, so true…..

    • Phil2u

Wow. I had not thought of that.

    • Niblet58

At least he would be dressed appropriately not like some night club singer.

  • Butch

I can’t help but notice he’s one of a very few people in the photo who are smiling. Hmmmm, hmmmm, hmmmm.

    • AmeriCanadian

He’s also the most attractive one up there!

      • JCF

My eyes are drawn to the cute blonde in pink standing next to him. Who is she? [And is she happily married? ;-/ ]

    • No More GOP.

Also, not wearing a dress (not that there’s anything wrong with wearing a dress). It might be drafty?

  • Mordred LeFey

This makes me warm and fuzzy inside.

  • JWC

    Hey Look up Neanderthals

  • That_Looks_Delicious

It’s not very accurate to call them WAG’s; they’re wives or spouses. Heads of government/state do not bring their girlfriends to summits.

    • jayjonson

At least one of them are identified as “partners” not spouses. I believe the partner of the President or Prime Minister of Slovenia.

    • JCF

      “To our wives and sweethearts: may they never meet.” {Drink!}

  • Pat

Love it!!! This picture just makes my day.

  • Ben in Oakland

As a former high end professional event photographer, I can only say that this is a particularly crappy group shot, done by an amateur, if they were that lucky.

    • houstonray

“Hey Donald, can you take our picture?”

      • Ben in Oakland

I take only the best pictures with this. 👠

        Everyone says so!

    • DumbHairyApe

It is pretty lame to see them all standing side by side, not overlapping, as if it’s a photo for dresses…and the sunlight hitting someone on the face is a bad idea too. Makes them all look isolationistic and not happy to be with each other as a group…even though there are, mostly, smiles everywhere.

      • Ben in Oakland

And standing clunkily, shoulder to shoulder, in an unbalanced group.

One of the reasons I retired was that so many clients didn’t seem to care anymore however bad their photos were.

I once did a group shot of Some 200 aerospace executives. The whole thing took 10 minutes, every face was visible, everyone was looking at the camera, and no one closed their eyes. That is how good I was at it. But eventually, I got tired of potential clients telling me that being that good at it and giving them something that their clients would actually value wasn’t as important as the money. Someone else could do a group shot, 50% as good but also at 50% of the money, was all that really mattered.

        • Butch

We run into that attitude all the time at our upholstery shop. It’s frustrating.

        • You’d think the Queen of Luxembourg would have their own court photographer to take care of this kind of thing. I thought all those royal houses photographed everything,.

          • Phillip in L.A.

Technically, isn’t Luxembourg a duchy, or am I still living in the XVIIIth century?

          • Haha!! You are right. Wouldn’t the Grand Duchess have a court photog? Or the Queen of Belgium bring her own? I must admit, I don’t really know how this all works.

          • Phillip in L.A.

            Dunno, either

          • Ben in Oakland

Luxembourg is a grand duchy. No queens except of the usual sort.

      • Mihangel apYrs

well – they are a bunch of people whose only commonality is a governing spouse (N.B no Mr May).

It’s like a social evening for a group, where the fanatics are busy discussing left-hand thread obulators while their “other”s have been dragged along by blackmail . . .

        • jayjonson

They are not all “spouses.” At least two of the women are listed as “partners”–the partner of the prime minister of Belgium and the partner of the prime minister of Slovenia.

          • Mihangel apYrs

pedantically true, but one wouldn’t bring a one-night stand, though I suppose one could bring a family member.

I’m not going to the wall for the word!

  • Lars Littlefield

The comments attached to that photo are rather amusing. One of my favorites: “”Lo que no es un avance es llamarles “mujeres inútiles y gays. Pfff.”

    • DumbHairyApe

<—-sad because he can't read the quote.

      • Tawreos

What is not an advance is to call them “useless and gay women.”

        • KCMC

          useless women and gay(s)?

          • Tawreos

Google translate does the work, I just copy and paste. =)

      • KCMC

        not progress?

        • Lars Littlefield

Yeah. Not progress. Another commenter was claiming them to all be worthless women and n”inutiles” a gay.

  • That_Looks_Delicious

Just curious. Do the female heads of government/state (Merkel, May, Grybauskaite, etc.) ever bring their spouses to these things? I don’t think I’ve ever seen that.

    • FAEN

      I believe they do.

    • Lars Littlefield

I suspect Merkel’s husband is somewhat distracted because he has a couple of doctorates and is a German quantum chemist and teaches as a full professor at the Humboldt University of Berlin.

Ya ever think our politicians are under acheivers?

      • ChrisMorley

You did once have a ‘constitutional law professor” as President. So there’s that.

        • Lars Littlefield

You mean that “community organizer” guy?

          • JCF

You mean skinny ghetto crackhead, “Obozo”? (swear to god, I read a troll over at Rolling Stone call 44 that just this morning. Fukking Teatrolls are waste of oxygen. Grrr!)

      • No More GOP.

        Constantly.

    • ChrisMorley

Both Merkel and May’s husbands are retiring flowers who rarely appear alongside their wives at these international shindigs.
Joachim Sauer (Merkel’s second husband) keeps a particularly low profile. Even during his wife’s election in the Bundestag, her inauguration, and later her taking the oath of office, Sauer was not present but reportedly briefly followed the event on TV from his university chemistry lab.
Philip May gets a little involved in local political campaigning in his wife’s parliamentary constituency.

Dalia Grybauskaitė (Lithuania’s President) doesn’t seem to have any steady partner.

  • Sam_Handwich

is that the first lady of Neptune in front of him?

    • William

      She’s a Bajoran Kai.

    • Gretchen

I believe that is the First Lady of Turkey, Mrs. Erdogan

    • bambinoitaliano

I thought she was that nun from Game of Throne to shame that prostitute out of Brussels.

  • andrew

    Awesome.

  • Natty Enquirer

Why can’t he have a nice business frock like the rest? I see Melania is already dressed for an evening’s work.

    • Mihangel apYrs

Melania is “inappropriately” dressed for an afternoon. If she didn’t know better (though as a European she should have), her advisers should have done a better job

      • David Walker

You assume her advisers know something about anything. I thought she was continuing the “mourning” motif, minus the veil and adding some skin.

        • Mihangel apYrs

          o tempera, o mores.

      • Mihangel apYrs

Correction, I have seen in a different photograph that her frock comes to mid-calf. So acceptable afternoon wear, if a trifle overdone

    • grindstone

Thank you! We know she owns a lovely suit, she was wearing one when she slapped his hand away. She’s woefully overdressed.

    • BillysWilly

As I’ve noted before, Donald probably bought her from whorehouse in her native country.

      • Mihangel apYrs

Charity. Whatever else, she is a person. Also the mother of a young boy who still depends on her

  • Blake Jordan

What do the male partners of the female leaders do during this?

    • ChrisMorley

Merkel and May’s husbands both skip these international political jamborees. Merkel’s does his chemistry professor day job and May’s looks after investment relationships.

    • Phillip in L.A.

They get bombed at the bar inside, complain about how they don’t get enough oral sex from their wives, and then . . .

  • GayOldLady

And he looks to be enjoying every minute of it. Vive la difference

  • Gigi

Destenay is the only one who’s actually smiling. The woman in the black dress looks like she accidentally walked into the shot just as the picture was taken. Awkward.

    • jpinphx

      agree…. that’s the President of France’s wife.

      • Gigi

Maybe she’d just be goosed by Trump.

    • Tom Ato

      Is that a skort?

  • Dejerrity Mycron

I’m betting the gay PM and his husband have more sex then Trump and The Dour One.

  • Mihangel apYrs

    meh
she was born and raised in Slovenia not Texas (apologies to civilised Texans)

    • Phillip in L.A.

How about apologizing to the people of Slovenia for comparing their country to Texas?

      • Mihangel apYrs

it was an exclusionary comparison (e.g.champagne not soda).

But to any Slovenians upset – sorry

        • Phillip in L.A.

          Very decent of you–you are a good sport! :}

  • jpinphx

Why does the President of France’s wife look like she’s at a work cocktail hour? Everyone else seems impeccably dressed for the occasion.

  • Max_1
    • Hue-Man

It looks like Sophie Grégoire-Trudeau didn’t attend. She rocks formal! https://uploads.disquscdn.com/images/26dbeca87d073b8d441b5163b9a9f40e3628a49d225ad7046051d831917f75e6.jpg

    • Derrick Johns

Well, oklay. Fance, Canada and Mexico have beautiful leaters.and we have what?

    • Hue-Man

I’m watching France2 news coverage of the summit, including the Macron/Trudeau meeting. Surprisingly, in the clip, Macron uses the informal “tu” instead of the formal “vous”.
“Quand tu viendras a Paris, je te presenterai tout ca.”
“When you come to Paris, I’ll present them to you” – referring to his wife’s grandchildren.

  • John Ruff

    Cool

  • Derrick Johns

Historic photo.. I love the First Gentleman of Luxemburg being included. Even though I hate her husband with a passion, Melania looked gorgeous. Yes, she did

  • Rex

The Stepford Wives collection – now with more equality.

  • David Walker

“…while their significant others attended a gathering…” Or, in Mel’s case, her insignificant other.

  • Gretchen

I wonder if Queen Mathilde on Melania’s right is questioning why she is about to head off to tea with a hooker in an evening gown. I can’t imagine she is any more impressed with the French First Lady’s cocktail dress.

  • Phil2u

… and he is by far the best dressed.

  • jayjonson

There is a video embedded in the Daily Mail site that shows Queen Mathilde (the host of the event) gently shoving Melania Trump to her designated place for the photo after she seemed to be heading to the central position reserved for Queen Mathilde herself. Luckily, this was not Montana, where a fist fight would no doubt have resulted in which Melania would have stomped her feet and shouted that she was entitled to be the center of attention. http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-4542842/Husband-Luxembourg-s-gay-Prime-Minister-joins-NATO-WAGs.html

  • David

Why is Malaria wearing an evening gown?

    • TampaDink

Because she was under the impression that this was a beauty pageant, we should just be grateful that she didn’t show up in her selection for the swimsuit competition.

    • Mihangel apYrs

she isn’t (if you mean full length dress). However it doesn’t look like an afternoon frock

  • Phillip in L.A.

Gauthier Destenay. Such a euphonious and upscale name! Wonder if ‘Destenay’ originally comes from a contraction of “the particle”? Does that mean the same in Luxembourg as it does (did) in France?

    • Lumpy Gaga

      He’s a hardon collider?

      • Phillip in L.A.

        Not that kind of particle

  • BillysWilly

This is the first I’ve heard of this, how is that possible? How cool that an openly gay man, with a real husband at that, can be a Prime Minister! I realize Luxembourg is a tiny country, about the size of Rhode Island if I remember correctly, but still very cool.

  • peterparker

Remember when Michelle Obama bared her arms and the wingnuts lost their mind?

  • timncguy

where are the spouses of Angela Merkel and Theresa May?

    • JohnFS

I don’t think they bother. I’ve never seen either of them accompany their wives on foreign trips.

  • Gerard

It looks as if Ireland will have an openly gay prime minister in another week. Leo Varadkar is away ahead in the election for the leadership of the governing party, Fine Gael. He came out publicly two years ago during the campaign for the marriage equality referendum…
