BREAKING: Jared Kushner Implicated In Plot To Create “Secret Communications Channel” With The Kremlin

The Washington Post reports:

Jared Kushner and Russia’s ambassador to Washington discussed the possibility of setting up a secret and secure communications channel between Trump’s transition team and the Kremlin, using Russian diplomatic facilities in an apparent move to shield their pre-inauguration discussions from monitoring, according to U.S. officials briefed on intelligence reports.

Ambassador Sergei Kislyak reported to his superiors in Moscow that Kushner, then President-elect Trump’s son-in-law and confidant, made the proposal during a meeting on Dec. 1 or 2 at Trump Tower, according to intercepts of Russian communications that were reviewed by U.S. officials. Kislyak said Kushner suggested using Russian diplomatic facilities in the United States for the communications.

The meeting also was attended by Michael Flynn, Trump’s first national security adviser. The White House disclosed the fact of the meeting only in March, playing down its significance. But people familiar with the matter say the FBI now considers the encounter, as well as another meeting Kushner had with a Russian banker, to be of investigative interest.

Tick, tock, tick, tock.

Are you giving me permission to gorge on ice cream even if it does drive my blood sugar sky high?

        • TampaDink

I’d usually advise, all things in moderation but with the current political nightmare, I’ve thrown all caution to the wind.

    • Clair

I might be jaded but I have a sinking feeling that document shredders are workingovertime and email servers will magically disappear. If the GW Bush white house and the RNC can accidentally misplaced or erase 20 million secret emails, I doubt we will see a single thing.

      • That_Looks_Delicious

I’m somewhat optimistic. The FBI actually started this investigation last summer, so they’ve been working on it for over a year. Also, different senators have more or less confirmed that there are 3 different grand juries already empaneled. I don’t understand a lot about law, but I’ve read that normally prosecutors make sure they get all their ducks lined up before they even call for a grand jury.

        • boatboy_srq

If the investigation had had any legs, there would have been enough dirt to make tRump drop out before November. But nooooo, instead Comey had to go on about mumble mumble new emails mumble still investigating mumble mumble Clinton mumble, and now here we are with a pResident tRump that’s a lot harder to dislodge than a mere candidate.

        • porsupah

The (long) Twitter thread that begins here goes into some detail about how long investigations can take, for even relatively minor cases. They’re in this for the long haul.

I wonder what famous designer Jared will hire to make his orange jumpsuit.

    • JCF

Not to frighten a_s, but the penalty for this really is, um, capital.

      • AtticusP

I know. I cut and paste that from Wikipedia. Whoever originally posted it sure loved their capital letters. I was too lazy to change them all to lowercase.

It think it was Capital as opposed to Corperal

        • Karl Dubhe

There are books from that era that do that kind of thing. I read the original of “A General History of Pyrates” published in 1724 and it has a fuckton of weird spellings and capitalizations.

I would think murders and such like to think there are those lower on the ladder

      • Karl Dubhe

I looked it up. 13 people have been convicted of Treason in the USA, according to wiki.

4 of them were executed, the rest pardoned – one seems to have escaped while on appeal.

They’ll be treated better than the child molesters, if only because they’ll be with them in protective custody. (and because they’re rich enough to buy their way out of trouble.)

        • David Walker

Plus Beauregard’s for-profit prison buddies will set up really nice suites for all convicted. No worries.

  • IAMBOWLINGGREEN
  • As at least one pundit pointed out last night: Trump transition team wanting to talk to world leaders and official representatives, including Russia’s = Almost certainly legal.

Doing so kinda on the down-low, so as not to attract general attention = Also probably legal.

Doing so, even though you’re still technically a private citizen, but take measures because you don’t want to be noticed by U.S. intelligence & national security agencies? Again, the means and methods are likely not illegal. But for damned sure it’s going to draw subpoenas because the IC will want to know — and will be legally entitled to know — what you were talking about with foreign agents.

    • Lazycrockett

Legal or not doing it undercover makes Drumpf look guilty as hell.

    • Addendum: If Kushner left these meetings off his security clearance forms, he’s in big, big trouble.

      • ColdCountry

        Oh, I DO hope….

    • JCF

I appreciate you splitting legal hairs here, Becca.

But I can’t help but wonder whether ANY Rethug would split such hairs if we had President Hillary (or still had Prez O). The line would go from “Lock Her Up” to “Hang Her HIGH!” in a millisecond…

    • Proud MOFO Beaner (bkb)

splitting legal hairs. I mean, if this is their new taking point (see link), then they’re losing the argument. Though the deplorables have no real alllegience to this country or our democratic values.

      http://www.foxnews.com/opinion/2017/05/23/gregg-jarrett-what-is-robert-mueller-investigating-since-collusion-is-not-crime.html?ICID=ref_fark

      • No, not splitting legal hairs. Just pointing out truths which might not be desired but nevertheless are true.

It boils down to the meetings in and of themselves being legal, but NatSec has every right to want to know what was discussed, and attempts to hide what was discussed raise reasonable suspicions that it was for illegal purposes.

    • Hue-Man

I assume they were terrorists planning attacks with Chechen (Russian) agents…Of course American spooks want to listen!

It’s all relative. A bunch of USans voted for a seriously impaired individual from a crazy party, so they’re all nuts, and the rest of us have to live with them, so they’ve driven us all nuts.

Have you ever heard of Ezra Levant? LOL. We have our nutjobs, just fewer of them. Fewer crazy Christians too but they do pop out of the sewers every once and in a while and are generally dismissed by the majority.

          • JD

Ezra Levant seems to be learning from the money making schtick that has proven so effective south of the border. It is a dangerous development – media influences minds and we have enough noise from the US media without creating our own Faux!

Fortunately, booze baby Bannon won’t have to worry about that. I believe the command was “don’t shoot until you see the whites of their eyes.” Yeah, well, good luck with that.

            Yes.

Bannon presents as perpetually drunk… doesn’t he?

        • Karl Dubhe

Victoria’s birthday was the 24th, I’d have to look up what Elizabeth’s is.

We still celebrate it because that’s the day after which your garden could be planted without worrying about a morning frost. But that was before climate change. Now we can plant safely in April.

      • another_steve

The United States would benefit by having a queen in charge.

      wiki

Five men were discovered inside the DNC office and arrested. They were Virgilio González, Bernard Barker, James McCord, Eugenio Martínez, and Frank Sturgis, who were charged with attempted burglary and attempted interception of telephone and other communications. On September 15, a grand jury indicted them, as well as Hunt and Liddy, for conspiracy, burglary, and violation of federal wiretapping laws. The five burglars who broke into the office were tried by a jury, Judge John Sirica officiating, and pled guilty or were convicted on January 30, 1973.

      • stevenj

Several of those people had CIA connections.

  • Gay Fordham Prep Grad

Ohhhhh. It will be quite interesting to find out how this tidbit came out. Do we have somebody higher up in the Kremlin providing us the intelligence? Or is somebody else connected with the Flynn investigation singing like a little bird.

    • Halou

Could be because the US intelligence agencies always try to insert themselves into the communication methods of foreign spies, especially those of hostile nations.

    • DaddyRay

If it is someone from Russia they will be having an unfortunate accident

      • Halou

Several Russians with ties to US intelligence, particularly those involved with, but not named in the Steele dossier have already had “accidents” after the election. And ever since Trump met Lavrov and Kislyak on the 10th of this month we have been learning exactly how it happened.

    • David Walker

Could this be the Trump Tower wiretapping that 45 accused President Obama of?

      • stevenj

Could be. If it is I have a feeling the wiretapping had been going on for some time. And not because of Obama.

    • Adam King

They said to Kushner, “So, I hear you had secret meetings with the Russians.” To which he replied, “D’oh! How’d you find out?”

The White House already has a line to the Kremlin but that is subject to government record keeping, whatever is said on the official line is recorded and archived for future historians. The Trump regime wanted an off-the-record line of communication with the Kremlin. For completely innocent reason’s, I’m sure.

If the Republican Party continues to shit on the Constitution AND the American people, will we EVER be able to clean up the mess?

I am so goddamn sick and tired of writing letters and signing petitions and making phone calls that I could fcuking SCREAM, but I’m old and poor; I don’t have any money to give Democratic and Progressive causes.

I really don’t understand something: not only did we have to spend something like four BILLION dollars to elect that hot mess in Washington, NOW we have to spend untold millions (billions?) to secure rights and things already supposedly guaranteed us by the Constitution and Federal law … like Social Security, for instance.

It shouldn’t cost a fortune to run a representative republic; nor should the election “season” be never-ending (if you haven’t noticed, the 2020 campaign for President has already started). Other countries have strict laws about campaign financing, advertising, and the length of the campaign season; we have Citizens United and two-year campaigns at the MINIMUM.

    Where did we go wrong?

    • JWC

You bring up a very good point This may be the time after 200+ years that the “Constitution” is revalued A lot of it is no longer pertinant We now have women and Blacks in the government We no longer pack muskets for safety and hunting The bulk of immigrants are not white Europeans. If the GOP has so ignored it, then rewrite it. Regardless of what the average American thinks it was NOT written by Jeezuss with an ammendment by St Ronnie. In fact religion had and shouldn’t have anything to do with it

      • Reality.Bites

Canada’s constitution is 150 years old, although the Charter of Rights is much newer. Ours is considered, like yours, all-but-nonamendable. The barrier to amending is too high.

But I don’t think your issues are the constitution. It’s having a political party committed to hate that’s been able to stack the court with people who couldn’t give a crap about the constitution or the bill of rights.

        • Karl Dubhe

Canada’s 150 years old, confederation was in 1867. The first of the former colonies to be granted independence (sorta) without a war. 🙂

The Constitution was repatriated in the 1980s. And boy was that fun. 🙁 Let’s never talk about it again. 🙂

        • JWC

Just because something is does not mean it has to stay that way Yours can be changed .What tenents were in place for Radio , for TV for Internet. There had to be ammenments put in to cover those advents If items can be added items can be deleted There is just NOT the will Progress is not a stagnant entity . you grow with it or get plowed under by it

        • stevenj

          And it goes back decades.

      • ColdCountry

I don’t think the problem is so much with the Constitution. And I don’t trust any of the idiots we have now to do a decent job rewriting it. The Founding Fathers were all about protecting our young country, the modern politicians are all about their own agenda, and the hell with most of We the people.

        • JWC

Tough job but not impossible A bi partisan nonpolitical group . 10 males 10 females ages 25-35 36-45. 46-55 56-65 Group made up of mostly Dr Teachers and other common professional plus 2 lawyers

          • ColdCountry

            Sounds like a plan.

          • JWC

take a year to analyse each clause of the the constitution suggesting what stays wwhat changes and whats added

          • If somebody is going to write constitutional law I’d much rather have constitutional lawyers do the writing rather than teachers – what subject? French Lit?, or doctors – you mean like Ben Carson?. When you, JWC, personally need a professional for a particular job do you just choose any random “common” person or an expert?

      • Gerry Fisher

Tweaking, not rewriting. 1) Make the second amendment clear and sane, and 2) Make it clear that corporations are not people.

        • JWC

Is treason still a death penalty offense?

    • Karl Dubhe

Not reliably. Only 4/13 convicted have been executed. (in the USA)

    • Natty Enquirer

Treason can only be committed when we are at war. Literal war.

      • ultragreen

        Does cyber-warfare count?

        • David Walker

That actually could be a possibility. Remote, but a possibility.

        • Natty Enquirer

That would be a stretch. Everyone likes to throw around “treason,” but it’s just not a realistic charge in the case of the Trump campaign/administration.

      • Karl Dubhe

The first to be convicted of treason were Philip Vigol and John Mitchell, from the Whiskey Rebellion, they were pardoned by Washington. Apparently.

        • Natty Enquirer

That was for “levying war,” one of two activities the Constitution defines as treason. The other is “adhering to their [the United States’] enemies,” which the courts have judged to mean states with whom we are at war.

          • RoFaWh

The courts’ judgements can be reformed.

  • SoCalGal20

WaPo just dropped another story. Senate Intel Committee has requested Trump campaign documents.

    https://twitter.com/washingtonpost/status/868247955286917126

    • Earlier this week, the Senate IC voted unanimously to grant both Burr and Warner full at-will subpoena powers.

    • One problem though is they limited the scope of their request to go back to June. It was in May there was that infamous Mayflower Hotel meeting in which the election-year conspiracy appears to have started. It included oil & gas interests, Turkish & Russian officials (among others), and what would become Trump’s inner circle of advisers — including Sessions, Manafort, and others.

    • RoFaWh

      Requested? Or subpoenaed?

      • SoCalGal20

I think they’ve started with requesting and will subpoena if that doesn’t work.

The American people deserve a “Do-over.” The Founding Fathers never predicted a traitorous administration winning office in a rigged election affected by a hostile foreign power. The American people should not settle for turning the keys of government to a Vice President who was put in office by this foul miscarriage of justice. We need a new election. Do NOT accept the transition from one traitor to another. We need a new election. The appointment to the Supreme Court should be negated. Massive demonstrations are in order. This is not the government of reasonable people!

    • ColdCountry

I agree, though I’m not sure I could live through another election so soon.

      • Lazycrockett

Well lets remember all of these other countries the transition team were meeting with were coming into Drumpf Tower in full view. Russian’s alway through the back door.

      • JCF

I actually believe it more likely that Drumpf (senile) was naive, and Kushner was malicious.

      • Randy503

I disagree. The fact that Kushner wanted the lines secret and secure meant that he wanted to talk about things that no one else, including our own intelligence agencies, could find out about. That’s 100% malice.

I have a question about immunity. With several key players asking and/or going to ask for immunity, what is the logic in denying it? I would think that gives investigators invaluable information? If they refuse to give it, then they just plead the 5th or something, wouldn’t it be better to get the information?

    Have been curious about that….

    • Lazycrockett

Congress doesn’t like giving immunity cause that is how Ollie North walked without serving for his sins.

      • It is also how North claimed responsibility for shit he didn’t do or decide, thereby protecting everybody above him.

        • houstonray

Awesome!!!! That makes sense. Thank you!

      • houstonray

        Thank you!

    • David Walker

Blanket immunity, as I understand it, would mean there would be no criminal prosecution, no jail time. John Dean’s immunity let him talk but didn’t spare him prison time for wrongdoing. Flynn wants blanket.

      • billbear1961

        Of course, the scoundrel does!

      • Sam_Handwich

and why is there any reason even to believe Flynn? seems to me there are probably lower-level figures willing to talk, who aren’t slimy attention whores like Flynn. he needs to be put behind bars

        • Lazycrockett

Flynn turned secrets as soon as Obama fired him.

          • RoFaWh

Moral: Obama would have seen a better result if he’d had Flynn charged and tried for treason.

      • Natty Enquirer

Federal prosecutors don’t give blanket immunity. They give use immunity, which means the testimony can’t be used against the witness. But the witness can still be prosecuted for the crime using other evidence.

Obstruction, money laundering, bribery, and RICO are my picks when the indictments roll out for Trump & Friends.

      • I’ve a feeling those will be just the tip of the iceberg. We’re now into the realm of espionage and credible treason charges.

        • Some off the top of my head:
          – Witness tampering & intimidation
          – Espionage
          – Conspiracy (attached to all of the crimes, including the financial shit)
          – Hatch Act violations
          – Election tampering
          – Falsifying security clearance forms & financial disclosure statements

          • Karl Dubhe

    • They have only a few choices:
      1. Continue to try to brazen this out (seems to be the default)
      2. Preemptively pardon Kushner, but then he can be forced to testify
      3. Throw Kushner under the bus, but then he’ll want to testify for immunity
      4. Try to claim this is Russian misinformation, but this risks a rupture with the same Russians who probably have reams of kompromat available and will use it if it looks like their election help was used, then never paid back

Somebody, somewhere, I’m not sure of either but possibly the WaPo editor in his office, will sooner or later receive a FedEx shipment from Moscow of all the kompromat, and will promptly publish it all in a special edition for nationwide distribution.

Chris Hayes. Camera pans over – “and now we have Maxine Waters”.

    Pursed lips. That oh-shit-more-shit-from-them-I-aint-got-time-for look.

    EVERYTHING.

    • Lazycrockett

Maxine doesn’t have to open her mouth to tell you “no”.

Is SNL aware that Complicit™ comes in a scent for men as well? Unfortunately, both fragrances are reminiscent of rotted vegetables, the kind that will be hurled at their tumbrels of Snivelfuck and Bumblecunt as they pass slowly by…

    • Claude Jacques Bonhomme

Yes, they do mention at the end of the skit that it’s also available for men, just for Jared.

O/T but just another reminder of why many folks, including ones in the LGBT community voted for Trump.
The racism from this POS comes through loud and clear.

    • Karl Dubhe

I have a feeling that he’s uglier than he thinks she is.

I’m not going to look for a pic of the POS, though.

    • billbear1961

The collusion with Russia–or, at the very least, efforts to cover it up–runs DEEP and, if the FULL truth comes to light, could UPEND the utterly corrupt GOP, nothing but a nest of goddamned thieves, gangsters, violent thugs and TRAITORS!!

A population that submits to governance by CRIMINALS–a nation of gutless, tremulous SERFS–gets what it DESERVES!!

    • JCF

I truly believe impeachment will sweep up Pence. Now if we’re stuck w/ “President Paul Ryan”…

The scum are TERRIFIED that the truth will out–they are desperate to silence leakers!!

      Taking messages for the President?

  • Lazycrockett

So Jared wanted not only set up a back channel at the Russia Embassy he also wanted Flynn to travel to a third country and talk to Russia officials secretly. WTF

    • Hank

It ALL has to do with the $$$, that Drumpf received from Russia and the Oligarchs for his business.. Another reason, why he will not release ANY of his Tax Returns!!! They OWN him, lock stock and barrel.

    • Flynn was deemed too known and familiar…so they sent Betsy DeVos’s brother — Erik Prince — to the Seychelles.

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=156OxRM_ZQE

Will the Republic survive, or will the CANCER that is the GOP-backed Trump regime overwhelm her atrophied (and also corrupt?) institutions?

Will the 55-60% (?) of the population who understand that democracy is being replaced by a criminal one-party state REBEL against the COUP that is overthrowing LEGAL, constitutional government; or will they PRETEND–lying to themselves–that all will be well in 2018, that there’s surely no way further interference could possibly take place in our elections, in a country where interference has ALREADY subverted democratic elections and where obstruction of JUSTICE–despite ALL the evidence that it has occurred and is ongoing–is NOT being treated–and COUNTERED–with the GRAVITY and URGENCY that it DEMANDS?!

    • RoFaWh
      • billbear1961

        How are you doing, RFW??

        • RoFaWh

Better. My knee replacement has settled down. It caused a long standing (but dormant) back problem to fire up, giving me the worst pain I’ve ever experienced. I still can’t walk very far, as has been the case for a good decade. That may be permanent

Lately I’ve had a really vicious cold; the sinus pain last weekend was bad enough to make me reach for the Dilaudid pills two nights in a row. Dr Svorkdal at the pain clinic at Royal Jubilee Hospital has warned me off NSAIDS because they were starting to harm my kidneys, so opiates are now my pain killer of choice. I’d prefer not to use them, being well aware of their potential for addiction, but there isn’t much else out there. Fortunately, my doctor trusts me enough to write generous prescriptions when I run out.

The cold is ebbing, but I’ve still got the sniffles and have developed a mild case of conjunctivitis in my left eye. Fortunately, it’s responding to OTS eye ointment

The real burden in my life is trudging through a number of large sets of classsical CDs from Amazon. About 200 discs from each of Mercury and RCA. The recording I posted is in one of them, but that particular set is a dog’s breakfast, including performers you’ve never heard of. Neither had I!

Amongst the dreck are a few jewels, but that set isn’t really worth the money.

Getting old is not for sissies, but what is the alternative?

      • billbear1961

I thought today is Saturday. Oh dear. Forgot to pick up the tamales.

BTW: may I ask you a good source of mulch for potted plants. I’ve started putting corks around the plants. Seems to work. But can you recommend a plant store brand? Also using olive and fruit pits, which can also be used for fuel.

        • Treant

Really, any good hardwood mulch is great, and you can get it in bags from many places. Your local brands will differ.

Just make sure it’s shredded hardwood, not big chips, which will harbor slugs. It should smell like wood, or like nothing, not rotted, and it should be solid or bark-like (slightly yielding but still solid) to the touch, never slimy.

      • Seriously: “I spoke to Russian ambassadors and officials known to be spies so incredibly often in the last year, I can’t keep track how often it’s happened” — is just about the world’s shittiest self-defense.

        • Karl Dubhe

          There’s a worse one.

“I can’t recall.” Credible for a senior, not so much for a 30something.

          • True. But “I don’t recall” is the answer always taken just shy of having to invoke the 5th Amendment. In other words, it’s a very common legal defense which *sometimes* works.

    • Karl Dubhe

What? Does he think he can use the same excuse as his father in law?

This entire admin is an actual Den of Pure Conspiracy to sell this nation out. I will bet that the main reason why this is happening is this. I believe the GOP is incapable of coming up with a strategy to dismantle the New Deal. So, they turned to the nation that has in place an authoritarian style of governance they believe they could duplicate. The icing is that 45 and his family, along with key cronies would make themselves fabulously wealthy along the way. But they are all so inept that they were caught at the onset.

Tillerson is fabulously guilty, too. His sole purpose being SOS was to broker that bug financial oil deal.

Bigly huge! (Does this mean O’Donnell is staying put?)

    • Leo

Kushner and Trump’s millions borrowed from the Russians isn’t new (specifically Kushner hundreds of millions owed to the Chinese comes to the mind then there’s his building at 666 in Manhattan he’s never recouped and it’s getting worse, etc.)

As this has snowballed I always thought whatever the Russians had they could perpetually hang over the entire family if they ever defaulted or didn’t follow through on lifting the sanctions. The perpetual blackmail.

    • Natty Enquirer

And of course, there is the matter of the huge Exxon oil development currently held up by sanctions. Gee, I wonder if the Secretary of State could help with that or something?

  • This tweet from Dec 30 is looking more and more damning.
    https://twitter.com/realDonaldTrump/status/814919370711461890

    • It refers to Putin refraining from reacting to the Obama administration increasing sanctions in response to the election tampering by the Russians.

Apparently Macron and the gay PM of Luxembourg were exchanging glances and eye rolls while listening to Trump:

To start, there’s the NATO speech (see above). Most of the crowd greeted Trump with stony silence during his address. However, as Fox News reports, a few prominent members took it quite a bit further, with Luxembourg’s Prime Minister Xavier Bettel and France’s Prime Minister Emmanuel Macron exchanging glances, and seeming to roll their eyes and snicker at the President.

      http://www.electoral-vote.com/evp2017/Pres/Maps/May26.html#item-5

I’m really surprised at electoral-vote referring to the French President as France’s PM.

      • Lazycrockett

They were all laughing at him during that speech at the opening of the new building. Merkel, the leader of the free world, kept trying to get everyone to be quiet and serious, but it wasn’t happening.

        • billbear1961

Well, she IS the Leader of the Free World, but to expect serious people not to laugh at that ugly buffoon is a bit much.

containing the USSR had been the US policy since the 50’s. the only viable option in adhering to that goal was to train, fund and arm the Afghans. deploying US troops was certainly not an option, in the midst of the cold war nuke scare and in the wake of the Vietnam disaster.

    • Yeah, let’s also not fall into the trap the NYT appears almost already to be doing, which is buying this new spin that the ‘channel’ was all about future US/Russia coordination in Syria.

This is the Kushner-camp pushback, IMHO.

It doesn’t explain the bankers from Russian banks under current sanctions. It doesn’t explain leaving these meetings and contacts — and only these ones — off security clearance forms. And it doesn’t explain why they were so keen on having a secret channel that couldn’t be monitored by US National Security agencies, but which could be by Russia’s spies, by design.

Besides corruption on an unprecedented scale, I’m thinking at this point the Russians almost literally own the Trumps/Kushners, via investments & money laundering, via further inducements, and via kompromat of all kinds, from the merely corrupt-financial to the lurid and grotesque.

      • SoCalGal20

I looked at that and rolled my eyes. Is that really the best “explanation” you douchebags can come up with? Trump’s base may be dumb as rocks but readers of the NYT are definitely not. Is this the quality of spin we can expect from the Kushner/Bannon/Lewandowski “war room”?

      • billbear1961

Trust the the NYT to carry water for Kushner.

The MAIN reason we’re in the non-stop crisis we’re now living is because so MANY in the press can’t or won’t–for a variety of reasons–acknowledge the absolute and total CORRUPTION staring them in the face.

EDIT: They exasperate the HELL out of me!

I’m curious how this ties in with the Russian government bank server located in Trump Tower. It went dark and stopped pinging home just before the election, if I recall correctly.

        • You do, but the “odd traffic” patterns resumed about a week or so after the election, although not often. As I’ve mentioned previously, the pings could have been using DNS lookups in order to transfer encrypted information via malformed DNS requests & replies.

My usual analogy for those unfamiliar: A DNS lookup is like if you had a blank envelope and gave it to your buddy and said, “Hey, I want this to go to Joe. Please put his address on the envelope.” Your friend looks up Joe’s address, puts it on the envelope and hands it back to you. “Here you go,” he says.

In this transaction, the envelope (DNS lookup request) is supposed to be empty. But there’s a way to fuck with it to put messages in that envelope in each direction, both during the address lookup and the act of returning it to you. You can then say, “This pile of several hundred envelopes to Joe… I really don’t need them, so I’ll throw them away.”

Easy-peasy, you’ve just gotten rid of the evidence, almost untraceably. You can’t hide the odd fact of your having made all those request, as it’s logged throughout the internet along the way. But you can hide every last detail of those malformed DNS lookup requests & answers.

A LOT of data passed between Alfa Bank and Trump Org servers. And also between Alfa and a server run by…Betsy DeVos, as part of her international business. Her brother? Erik Prince, head of what used to be called Blackwater and implicated in the subsequent Seychelles / Russia hook-up meeting which ALSO was supposedly for the purpose of setting up a secret communication channel between the Trump administration and the Kremlin.

          • -M-

It’s been suggested the dns traffic was to synchronize updated data on voters for social media targeting.

As we know, Trump is setting up a war room to battle the Russian collusion allegations. I just heard on MSNBC, don’t call it a “war room”. Call it a “crisis chamber”.

What INFURIATES me about all this is that much of this was known and was being investigated back before the freakin election. Yet it was a constant barrage of leaks about Hillary (which may now turn out to be mostly fake) and Comey knew about this but kept quiet. Not letting anyone have this info prior to election is just as criminal.

    • jimbo65

Yeah, the Comey going with the fake Hillary news is especially egregious. It’s why I feel he got his payback by getting shit canned. But now he’ll pay it forward to 45. This nightmare we’re all living could have been prevented a long time ago.

      • Lazycrockett

Well we also have to put some blame on Obama for keeping quiet when it became obvious that Russia was trying to get Drumpf elected. Also blame McConnell, Ryan and others for not coming forward bout what they knew from intell. Everyone in power basically thought Hillary had it and just kept quiet.

        • JCF

I’m just not sure what Obama could have done. ANYTHING he said would be seen as political (even any evidence he presented).

I hate to see it: what this country needs, is some dying. And some replacing (sorry, Nazi Spencer, you WILL be replaced!)

          https://uploads.disquscdn.com/images/62542337bd245d99138a59a72f1f28772f80b55b92b21fc1b9e2957a98518f15.jpg

          • The county is going to get tons of dying under Ryancare. Primarily in red states and rural areas. . At least 23 million people, and probably many more, will lose health care. Millions of poor kids with not have proper care. Unfortunately what you want will come true.

        • At this point, I’m beginning to think the GOP leadership — Ryan and McConnell — were tangentially involved and therefore complicit. They BOTH have had PACs which received money via U.S.-based Russian loyalists, which is the usual pattern for these things. Legal, but ethically questionable.

          • Plus, Russia was going to keep them from losing the WH and Congressional majorities. They sold America for their own political ambitions.

          • I think McConnell is happy that he does not have to push for Ryancare in the Senate. He knows it is a disaster and resents it being shoved at him. I am not sure he even wants Pence as President, Ryan and his right would cause all sorts of problems for 2020- unlike 2018, he is going to have problems keeping the Senate Republican then.

          • kareemachan

Yertle can go eff himself. He has plenty to answer for.

        • Ninja0980

Obama should have told McConnell and Ryan to go fucks themselves.
Like the courts, Obama sadly didn’t fight as hard as he could sometimes.
That IS an area Hillary would have been better at.

          • Hillary would be better at everything except one thing — if she were President, it would be impossible taking the House back in 2018, and it would be hard to defend 25 Democratic seats in the Senate. If history is any yardstick, the Republicans would win the midterms in a landslide. The American people almost always go against the party that wins the White House in first year mid terms especially in close elections.

        • kareemachan

Really? If he had come out and said that, people would have DUMPED on him about trying to determine the outcome of the election.

Don’t put this on him. That’s idiotic. And moranic.

    • evan_or

  • Randy503

Listen up folks! This is a Very Big Deal. Our FBI just said that they had intercepted conversations between the Russian ambassador and his overloads in Moscow. That means they just blew open a significant intelligence lead.

Obviously, the Russian ambassador never knew that he his communications with Moscow were compromised by our FBI. Now he does. In SpyWorld, you try never to let the subject know that he is being spied upon, or else he will be extra careful in what he says. (I know this from reading several spy novels, of course). But seriously, it’s why Churchhill allowed the Nazis to bomb Coventry, because if he had warned the people of Coventry, then Hitler would know his communications were compromised, and they would then take measures to to counter that, and then England wouldn’t have any more intel.

For the FBI to go public with this means they understand that they will get no further intel from the Russians by way of spying, at least for a while. They would only do that if there was a Very Big Deal that they needed to expose.

So yeah, Kushner better understand that his pretty face is going to not be an asset in jail.

    • bkmn

I think the flipped Flynn and are releasing this info to shake down more people around Trump to flip too.

    • Of course the Russian ambassador knew he was being spied on. Just as the American ambassador in Moscow is trailed. Its part of the game. That is what makes this so interesting. He is like WTF am I supposed to do? The FBI is on our case and we do not want Trump being kicked out of office in 90 days. He was panicking at the stupidity of Kushner. The Russians knew full well the FBI was hot and fast on the Trump team Russian contacts and were trying to cool things off after Trump was elected.

      • canoebum

Until he is impeached. They can always “keep the investigation open” on Kushner until after Trump is gone, then prosecute him.

    • Jukesgrrl

I agree it’s a Very Big Deal. But Rep. Jim Himes was on Maddow’s program tonight — he’s a DEMOCRAT from Connecticut. And he said it might be a mitigating circumstance that Kushner’s nefarious contacts happened BEFORE Trump was inaugurated. In other words, Jared could have suggested any awful thing, but as a private citizen acting in no official capacity, no harm, no foul. I’d be the first to say that’s BS, but I can imagine a lot of people would jump on that bandwagon to get Trump off the hook for this. I just keep wondering what our NATO allies must think about the past few days. Their heads must be spinning.

      • They think —
        1. Trump is inexperienced, not that bright when it comes to statecraft to say the least, and probably suffering from senility or arteriosclerosis.
        2. They are humoring him. He is still President of the 800 pound Gorilla (America) and have to deal with him as long as he is President.
        3. Their defense and intelligence staff are meeting behind the scenes and keeping secrets away from the USA. They are holding up the fort right now. This includes the UK which is still the one of the two nuclear powers in Europe (with France) and part of European defense.
        4. They are panicking that Labor in the UK is catching up in the polls right now — they are getting close to the Conservatives and the Pound is falling at last count. Expect concessions to May on a soft Brexit next week.
        5. They like everyone else are praying that Trump does not cause a major recession right now, or gives Putin license to move into the Baltics — something that could provoke a war in Europe.

        • billbear1961

They better keep the FUCK out of the Baltics, God DAMN them!

Our Shy Guy lives in Estonia!

          • Estonia is gorgeous, I did a weeks consulting there three years ago. But the problem with the Baltics is that there is a substantial Russian speaking minority in all three nations, and considerable tension exists between them and the people that speak Lithuanian, Latvian, or Estonian. They also tend to live in the Eastern Part of the nations — and Russia is angry that the Baltics are part of NATO. They were part of the Russian Empire except for a short period from 1919 – 1939. Its like the Ukraine problem, but they are part of NATO. Putin could use a “internal incident” to cause problems.

          • BobSF_94117

There is certainly ethnic tension in the Baltic states, but the people of Russian extraction DO NOT want to reunite with Russia. They have the advantage of being able to compare life on the two sides of the border.

        • e’ville_globeguy

Well, like they say—”every party has a pooper”.

  • bkmn

Flynn was also supposedly involved in trying to set up this back channel. I have a feeling Flynn flipped on Trump to try to get a lighter sentence. Let’s hope they take down the whole family, Pence, his Cabinet, most of his staff.

And then there is another investigation in progress into Mercer’s company’s involvement in voter manipulation…

    • Perhaps. In WaPo’s reporting though, they said they had a broad outline of this info leaked to them in an anonymous letter in late December, which would’ve been before Flynn’s troubles.

I do believe Flynn has probably flipped, but I also think that after the events of the last month, the U.S. intelligence community has decided enough of this shit, let’s dance.

      • Ninja0980

Given Trump’s antics in Europe, I expect to see the international community follow suit, especially Israel and the U.K.

      • Lazycrockett

Flynn was working for Turkey as well as Russia, remember Flynn was advocating giving the turkish guy who lives in PA in exile back to Edrogan SP? This setting up a back channel went so far that the Russian Ambassador was against it cause it was too extreme. Really you want to make weekly calls to the Kremlin from the Russian Embassy???????

        • -M-

His Turkey connection was a Russia connection too I think.

          • It was. A big chunk of this conspiracy involved new trade deals and pipelines — through Turkey.

          • canoebum

It’s more than a connection. Trump and Co. are trying to help Putin break Turkey off from NATO.

      • bkmn

I agree that the entire intel community wants to take him and everyone around him down and are doing everything they can to produce a case that will convict him eventually, and hopefully impeach him sooner.

  • Good point:
    https://twitter.com/juliettekayyem/status/864813160771072000
Not saying Donald isn’t also involved, but it might also explain why Kushner was so eager and on-board for firing Comey at that particular time.
