SNL’s Trump Team Cast Sings Hallelujah [VIDEO]

Slate reports:

After the crazy week in Washington there was no shortage of material for Saturday Night Live’s final episode of the season to take one final dig at Donald Trump and his administration. But instead of taking the bait, the show took a different tack in what looked very much like a swan song for a presidency that is increasingly engulfed in scandal.

Alec Baldwin as Trump sat at the piano on the main stage and began performing Leonard Cohen’s Hallelujah. One by one he was joined by other cast members and their memorable impressions of administration members that helped make what many have described as a turnaround season for the show.

You’ll remember that in November, SNL employed the same song to mark the election loss of Hillary Clinton and the death of Leonard Cohen.

Hopefully *trump will no longer be 45 when SNL starts a new season. I will even yell out Hallelujah!

    • netxtown

In my Romper Room Magic Mirror, I see all of them – *trump, *pence, *kushner, *iskank, *ryan, *mcconnell, *etc – getting the boot

      • That_Looks_Delicious

Why does everyone forget the Keebler elf? He’s at the top of my list.

And those are the don’t bees. We’ll have to look around for the do bees.

      • Silver Badger

They must all go. Tillerson and Sessions are at the head of my list. Tillerson for deny Chechen gay men refugee status and Sessions for being Sessions.

    • i swear, i will convert to whatever religion is required to see him gone by the start of the next SNL season, if that would make a difference.

      • Helen Damnation 🍑™

Gurl, be careful what you pray for. Mike Pence is meaner than cat shit, and he hates queers more than just about anybody. He doesn’t exactly have clean hands, so in case of emergency there is Paul Ryan, who is even meaner than Pence; he simply has no soul.

    • Carl

We won’t truly be out of this mess until we get a democrat in office again, but I’ll do the dance of joy every time a Trump traitor goes down.

  • Yalma Cuder-Zicci

So that was Vanessa Bayer’s and Bobby Moynihan’s last show. I didn’t realize that before, but figured it was Vanessa’s swan song because she was featured in so many sketches, and she was barely there for the rest of the season. They they do something nice for them at the end?

  • Dramphooey

Speaking of Pence (sort of), I saw an interesting post by in my Facebook feed this morning. Apparently one of my friends who seldom if ever posts about politics but who must be conservative was whining about students at Grove City College’s commencement, where Mike Spence gave the speech. Some student refused to shake Pence’s hands and my friend was on about how disrespectful this was and how they “wasted” their educations–yeah, whatever.

Grove City is noted for being very conservative and not taking any Fed money. I guess Pence not playing perfectly well in Red State Peoria–please note it was only “some”–is enough to cause a minor freak out with these people. I’m seeing other Facebook posts that I would interpret as running scared.

    • Dramphooey

Edited: I called him Mike Spence!

    • blackstar

I don’t blame them and have every right to protest . As far as being disrespectful by not shaking his hand? I don’t know if I could avoid spitting on him.I really mean that .

    • Skeptical_Inquirer

I think your friend should be told that at least they weren’t making nooses and making some really crude signs about witch doctors & effigies like they did with Obama. If he was dead silent during that time then he’s just as hypocritical as the rest of conservatives.

      • Gerry Fisher

His friend should understand that it’s rude to use human beings as props for political expediency. In that sense, the protesting students were responding to rudeness, defending themselves. (Dan Rather was my commencement speaker in ’83. He was excellent.)

    • unsavedheathen

A thoughtful column by a Grove City junior on the reaction to Pence speaking at commencement in the NYT yesterday.

      • Dramphooey

        Thank you! Very interesting.

    • thatotherjean

Warren Throckmorton, who teaches psychology at Grove City College, has a blog. He may be a religious conservative, but he was on the side of the student protesters. He doesn’t like what the Trump administration is doing, or the people who support them on religious grounds.

    • Robert Flanagan

Respect is earned and should not be given freely.

  • Carl

I hope they tear each other apart on the way down.

  • Gerry Fisher

I never, *ever* would have predicted that SNL would be come relevant again. Amazing transformation.

  • Bj Lincoln

I cried when ‘Clinton’ sang. This version, not sure what to think. I am glad SNL FINALLY is funny again. I have watched more SNL in the last year than in the last 10 years.

    • fuzzybits

I quit watching in the 90’s.

  • royinhell

And note that “Trump” is wearing a Russian Flag pin on his lapel. Great touch!

  • Oh, Parker

Bookending this season with Hallelujah was inspired brilliance on the part of SNL. They have managed to poetically put on full display the utter cynicism and venality which has been the true core of the entire Republican party for decades and now perfectly embodied in Trump. The end result when the worst impulses of society are manipulated into handing the levers of power to a party utterly devoid of ideas and hellbent on living in a previous century. Remarkable job.

  • thatotherjean

May it be this administration’s swan song. It’s better than they deserve.

  • Sam_Handwich

the first one with Kate was probably the most moving thing i’ve ever
seen on SNL, particularly with Leonard Cohen’s death coinciding with the
election. it was raw, and it needed to be. i cried.

but there is something way too jarring about this week’s. stopped it after 30 seconds. nope.

    • Lumpy Gaga

      Exactly my one-word reaction: “Nope.”
