WHO’S THE NUT JOB NOW: James Comey Agrees To Testify In Open Session Before Senate Committee

Here we go. CNBC reports:

The Senate Intelligence Committee said ousted FBI Director James Comey has agreed to testify in an open session. The committee said in a late Friday statement that it plans to schedule the hearing for after Memorial Day.

The Senate Intelligence Committee is investigating Russia’s alleged meddling in the 2016 election and any possible links between Moscow and the Trump campaign. Sen. Richard Burr, chairman of the committee, said he hopes that Comey’s testimony “will clarify for the American people recent events that have been broadly reported in the media.”

Sen. Mark Warner, vice chairman of the committee, said he expects the former FBI director to “shed light on issues critical” to the committee’s investigation. The Virginia Democrat also said he hopes that Comey will answer some of the questions following his sudden dismissal.

        • billbear1961

          Their Big Money donors, perhaps?

          • David L. Caster

I think they are afraid they will become just like their enemyβ€”the GOPβ€”and that disturbs them. And, perhaps it should.

The tactics of the Right are harmful and corrosive to the American system of government; thus, emulating the Right is not consistent with the value system of the Left or even most Centrists. To the extent Democrats try to make themselves attractive to the Right, they are correspondingly abdicating their principles and loyalty to the Center and Left. Democratic leaders seem unable to fully internalize this apparent truth.

Democrats believe they should be doing what is best for the country and the people that live in it. They haven’t quite internalized a critical reality: allowing the GOPβ€”in its current form and politicsβ€”to control government is not in the best interest of the country or its people.

We have a respectable cellar at our home in Old Montreal. Approximately 25 feet by 50 feet. Stone walls with cedar cabinets for Reds and Champagnes. The white stay on the racks as the stone keeps the temp cool. Current catalogued volume is about 300 + bottles of wine and 100 Spirits/Liqueurs. Oldest bottles: 1732 Hennesey, 4 bottles 1900 Chateau Margaux, 2 bottles of 1812 Napoleon Brandy and 6 bottles of 1899 Lafite. We’ve been collecting for over 15 years.

P.S. And yes, there’s a very solid door with an alarm system.

          • Jean-Marc in Canada

Thanks, though I can’t take all the credit for all it’s contents. My grandfather and father were also serious collectors and left me some nice bottles. The rest were divided amongst my siblings. I wish I had gotten the White Star Line Champagne (went to my sister and yes, THAT ship). Sigh. Still, can’t complain. Between the two of us (I got the husbotter into it), we now have a respectable cellar.

          • vorpal 😼

Oh, envy! A friend of mine gave me some Lagavulin (can’t recall the age) recently and it was insanely good.

I never liked whiskey up until I started sampling actually GOOD, properly cared for and aged whiskies. Delicious.

Last time I was at my friend’s house, we polished off a beautiful Japanese whiskey that she had after four bottles of wine. I don’t recall the last time I was so hung over. Well worth it.

        • Cattleya1

          • vorpal 😼

Not an uncommon reaction. Some people are, IIRC, sensitive to high levels of tannins, which reds have much more of than whites.

          • Smokey

Try “organic” American reds or imported reds. The added sulfites in many American reds are a migraine trigger for some people (like me).

          • Cuberly

            Poor thing.

Glad he found you. He looks perky in the photo though. Is he warming to you yet?

I live between a big college and a major university and one of the worst things about it is how many disposed animals show up between semesters. It’s really infuriating. In the 11 years I’ve lived here I’ve rescued 4 cats. Unfortunately I can’t keep them (allergic) but I live near a pet hospital and they’re really good at taking in cats and nursing them back to health then putting them up for adoption.

          • RoFaWh

If kitty is intended to be an indoors-only cat, make sure he has been carried around outside so when (not if) he escapes, he’ll have an idea where home is.

Edit: A useful adage: the way to a cat’s heart is through its stomach. “Temptations” cat treats are close to addictive.

          • David Walker

Patches is addicted to Temptations. I’m either her dealer or enabler. She doesn’t really care…as long as she is rewarded for her catness with Temptations.

          • whollyfool

(Heart.) Thank you for taking care of this kitty.
I second the recommendation of treats as a cat enticement tool/comfort measure.
A lot of people don’t realize how upsetting environment change is for cats. But it sounds like he’s in good hands now. πŸ™‚

          • Cuberly

A friend of mine does foster animal care and he swears by keeping loud noises to a minimum and calming voice coupled with treats.

          • UrsusArctos

Food first. Once they identify you with pleasure they’ll find other uses for you. All you need to know is that dogs want a pack structure, cats want order with an equal. Once things settle down he’ll start seeking attention from you. Remember cats do not respond well to physical direction like dogs do. Where you could take a rolled up paper to a dog and teach them to stay out ofX, the cat will learn if you present something more interesting or pleasurable.
            tl;dr carrots, not sticks

          • Stogiebear

We’ve been around each other a bit before now. I teach this student privately from her studio and after a few visits he started coming up and using my legs as a kind of scratching post (harmless as he’s declawed). He’s pretty good about letting me pick him up and move him from his room to mine (before he has free run) and loves to be petted.

          • UrsusArctos

Read up a bit on declawed cats. Some of their behavior is a bit different. They MAY bite a bit more because they know it’s their main defense now. You MAY also encounter litter box problems down the line because they associate the box with pain as possible joint damage shows up later. That said, I’ve known perfectly normal declawed cats. These are just a couple of things to watch for.

    • billbear1961

I would like to think so, but Comey IS a Republican. Therefore, it is VERY difficult for me to trust him, especially after what he did to Hillary.

It appears he really WAS trying to do his job and is LIVID, especially about the WAY he was fired.

DESPITE this, I fear that he will soft-pedal Trump’s outrages, not treat them as the BIG deal they are.

Comey’s firing was–IS–obstruction of justice. Trump has admitted THREE TIMES NOW–most recently to the Russians in that meeting with them in the Oval Office–that he fired him to try to shut down or at least DAMAGE the Russia investigation.

I fear Comey will brush this off, make EXCUSES for Trump.

Sorry, I don’t trust him–he IS, in MOST ways, a partisan Republican. We KNOW that from what he did during the election campaign.

      • djcoastermark

Full of hope and glee here now, but yes, the reality that he may just water down the whole thing cases me a bit of concern also. But for now, I will enjoy.

As it builds two luxury apartment buildings in Jersey City, the Kushner family is trying to raise $150 million from Chinese investors through the so-called EB-5 program, which offers visas in exchange for a $500,000 investment. To get it done, the Kushners have turned to a pair of middlemen who have capitalized on a lucrative government program that critics say has little oversight and loose rules.

This shit blows my mind and I am so disgusted. My husband came to the USA as a high school exchange student his senior year, got scholarships through college and grad school and then worked for 6 years until getting laid off in 2008. He was legal every fucking day and spent thousands of dollars of his own money at each step along the way. We had just married in 2008 when he lost his job. We left the country for 5 years and lived as refugays until DOMA was killed and I could finally sponsor him for a green card in 2013. Now these deplorable fucks are selling green cards and meanwhile railing against hard-working immigrants?! You have no idea how that makes my blood boil!!! I really hate these people so much.

        • When you’re r a child of refugees like I am and you know that nativists assholes worked hard to keep your family out, even though the US is partly responsible for what befell Khmer, Hmong, and Lao people, then worked to keep your families out of nice neighborhoods and good job, it’s kinda infuriating to see how open the rich are treated with red carpets.

  • NY Times is on a roll today.

F.B.I. Once Warned G.O.P. Congressman That Russian Spies Were Recruiting Him
The F.B.I. warned a Republican congressman in 2012 that Russian spies were trying to recruit him, officials said, an example of how aggressively Russian agents have tried to influence Washington politics.

The congressman, Dana Rohrabacher of California, has been known for years as one of Moscow’s biggest defenders in Washington and as a vocal opponent of American economic sanctions against Russia. He claims to have lost a drunken arm-wrestling match with the current Russian president, Vladimir V. Putin, in the 1990s. He is one of President Trump’s staunchest allies on Capitol Hill.
    (…)
American intelligence authorities have concluded that Russian spies started a coordinated campaign of hacking and propaganda to damage Hillary Clinton’s presidential campaign and help Mr. Trump. The Justice Department appointed the former F.B.I. director Robert S. Mueller III on Wednesday to lead the investigation into whether Mr. Trump’s campaign colluded in that effort.

O/T but retired baseball player Aubrey Huff of the San Fran Giants can go fuck himself.
For those who don’t know, a Toronto Blues Jays player used the f word to an opposing player and was suspended two games for it.
According to Aubrey, that is two games too many and punishing him is leading to the wimping down of America.
First of all Aubrey, slurs are never acceptable and holding people accountable for them is making America better, not lesser.
Second of all, if you are okay with slurs, which words can we use against your wife and daughter?
Finally, we were at the baseball hall of fame today and we got to see exhibits of Jackie Robinson, Hank Aaron, Hank Greenberg.
The slurs and racism used on them was considered acceptable then too.
Wrong then and it’s wrong now.
In conclusion, all I can say is go fuck yourself Aubrey.

    • marshlc

    • Can we see Trump Jr go down with them. I want to see the smirk wiped off his face.

    • I wish I believed that. Trump has a firewall. The GOP is terrified of their own base and the base loves Trump. They don’t believe anything bad about him. People in the media are talking to Republicans in NYC and LA. I talk to Trump supporters in Texas. They are angry at the rest of the party, NOT Trump. He’s not going anywhere until the base turns on him and like he said, he could murder someone in the middle of Fifth Avenue and they’d still cheer him on.

      • Jmdintpa

Been saying that. Trump supporters are violent armed to the nines and just waiting for any excuse to put into motion there so called second amendment rights

      • Galvestonian

It’s my belief that once the base sees his corporate tax returns and the fact that he is totally owned by Russia and possibly China and most or all of his White House minions go down in flames for their Russia connections they’ll turn. You just know that there won’t be much in the way of direct Russian connections or ties to Trump himself as MoFo’s like him always, -ALWAYS- , have others do the crap so that they can get off — it’s so that he can throw everyone under the bus and look pure and unsullied – no taints, no stains – after all NOTHING is his fault. It’s the Democrats, the Gays, the Mexicans, the non- Christians, the brown people, the Muslims, the Media and anyone else that pisses him off.

        • I envy you that you still believe that. I’m not saying that to be condescending. I wish I still believed that there was any hope for over 1/3 of the country but they are in a faith-based relationship with reality. Facts don’t matter. Anything that isn’t what they want to believe is a lie. Anything no matter how preposterous that confirms their prejudices is true. That’s the reality American lives in. I think the GOP establishment will have to turn on him to save their own jobs. Enough voters wills stay home to win general elections, but this will be what the party demands from all future nominees. This IS the base of the party and they don’t care about facts or objective truth. They only care about hating liberals and blaming feminists, minorities and lbgt people…oh and immigrants. Democrats may well win in 2018…maybe even the senate. Republicans seem to be afraid that it could happen now. But the base is going to tear them apart if they turn on Trump.

          • Galvestonian

            Dear Houndtenor,
In 1897 a young girl in New York City by the name of Virginia O’Hanlon asked her father if there was really a Santa Claus. His reply was to have her write to the editor of the New York Sun and his reply was that if it is answered in the ‘Sun, then it is so’

I’m 74 and I still believe in Santa Claus. The feelings included in the Editor’s reply are inspirational — he mentions love, poetry and romance and in short he tells her how poor the world would be without Santa.

I believe in this country and I don’t think that those poor sods, those good hard-working people who sincerely believe that they are good Christians, who harbor their bigotry and racism cloaked in the trappings of the Stars and Stripes can prevail. Ignorance is no excuse.

It’s my belief that the world would be so much poorer without that belief — the belief that Trump’s base will turn on him once they see how he has sold them out.

If you see the answer here on ‘JMG’, then it is so.

          • I hope you are right. I just know a lot of Trump supporters and I don’t see any evidence that they will ever dump him. They love him because he says out loud the kinds of things they have said to each other for decades. But maybe they will clue in. Stranger things have happened. One of the good things about being a pessimist is that it’s a nice surprise when things turn out not to suck as badly as I thought they would.

  • One thing any Administration on the President’s first international trip doesn’t want is anything to happen back home to drag attention off the trip itself. In general, what’s really wanted is a full week of a slow news cycle so the speeches and photo ops get all of the attention. Just today, we have:

    1. Word the investigation has gone to an unnamed “close senior adviser to the President” — later confirmed via multiple sources to be Kushner (WaPo)
    2. News breaking (and then confirmed by the WH), that Donald bragged to his Russian friends in the Oval Office that he fired Comey to kill the Russia investigation, calling Comey a ‘nut job’. (NYT)
    3. Comey agrees to testify in open hearings in the Senate intelligence committee. (everyone reporting)
    4. WH counsel’s office is researching what happens in an impeachment. (CNN)
    5. Trump’s financial disclosure forms left out a bunch of his companies. (several)
    6. People in the WH are saying they think Donald is “a moron.” (Daily Beast)
    7. Pundits all over the news terming Trump’s statements as an admission of intent to commit obstruction.
    8. CNN reports Russian officials bragged they could use Flynn to influence Trump and his advisers (CNN).

And this here would make it into a full-on conspiracy to obstruct justice:

    • jimbo65

I can believe it. Seeing how in love he was with Flynn and was deluded into thinking he could rejoin the administration.

    • houstonray

Flynn could be charged with treason at the end of this. I believe that’s punishable by life in prison or death (I doubt THAT would happen) but really, facing the prospect of life in prison, what are the odds he’ll turn on Trump???

      • I believe chances are good he’s already flipped.

        • David L. Caster

The way he was fired you would think he would be ready to show Trump no mercy, and legally he know’s he must not.

      • Natty Enquirer

The Constitution prescribes death for the crime of treason. But treason has not been committed because we are not at war with Russia.

        • houstonray

“Whoever, owing allegiance to the United States, levies war against them or adheres to their enemies, giving them aid and comfort within the United States or elsewhere, is guilty of treason and shall suffer death, or shall be imprisoned not less than five years and fined under this title but not less than $10,000; and shall be incapable of holding any office under the United States.”

What about the word “OR” followed by “adheres to their enemies…” wouldn’t aiding the undermining of our election and (as is coming out tonight) getting a position close to the President so as to influence his policies toward Russia, wound’t that count?

          • Natty Enquirer

The courts have decided that “enemy” means an opponent in time of war. The Rosenbergs were executed for espionage, not treason, because we were not at war with the USSR during World War II.

    • Link to story: http://www.cnn.com/2017/05/19/politics/michael-flynn-donald-trump-russia-influence/index.html

Russian officials bragged in conversations during the presidential campaign that they had cultivated a strong relationship with former Trump adviser retired Gen. Michael Flynn and believed they could use him to influence Donald Trump and his team, sources told CNN.

The conversations deeply concerned US intelligence officials, some of whom acted on their own to limit how much sensitive information they shared with Flynn, who was tapped to become Trump’s national security adviser, current and former governments officials said.

To see Republicans whine about Donald Trump being subjected to nasty attacks is laughable considering the hell Democrats and Republicans (especially the four in the Senate who voted yes) went through from 06 onward in the fight for equality.
Lee Zeldin and Claudia Tenney from NY really need to keep their mouths shut, as they made it a point to wage war on Republicans in NY who supported marriage equality.

She did to Quebec City for their 400th in 2008!

      • TuuxKabin

That was nothing short of amazing. Thanks. The ‘left side of the screen’ image of the bridge seems to end in darkness . . . the span does continue on?

        • Claude Jacques Bonhomme

Yes. The part that is lit is the over-water portion between the city proper and St-Helen’s island (where Expo 67 was held). There is another equally long span between St-Helen’s island and the south shore, over the St-Lawrence seaway.

          • TuuxKabin

J’adore les ponts. Thanks for the day time photo. GorJeesus. I went to Expo ’67, les Habitat was amazing. The multiple levels, coordination and timing as we passed thru every section/area of it. First major city I visited out side of San Francisco where I grew up, and thought, this is as scenic city as SF , and they speak French. Met a Lufthansa flight attendant. His route happened to be Munich/Montreal/San Francisco. Was such a thrill to meet him coming thru customs the following months we courted. Tres romantic. Beautiful photo. You must have a lot of Montreal Pride, sure.

          • Claude Jacques Bonhomme

Montreal Pride in August this year will be “Canada Pride” to mark the 375th of Montreal, and the 150th of Canada. They have dressed up the village with rainbow colored balls hanging over the street for the occasion.

A Lufthanza flight attendant! Très romantique indeed.

          • TuuxKabin

T’was indeed. I’ve always loved a man in uniform, but let me tell you CJ, a flight attendant signing up for the SFO route ALL the time, just to spend 12 hours with ‘his schatze’ twice a week. Too bad we never left the hotel room. Sweet dreams are made of this.

Senate seems finally to be serious about all this. FBI never stopped being serious. And the entire U.S. NatSec apparatus is alarmed.

          • billbear1961

Becca, during the Benghazi hearings, they had a staff of DOZENS working on the matter. There are nine working on the Senate staff on the Russian connections–NINE. There is not ONE forensic accountant with knowledge of how the Russian oligarchs hide their assets transfers abroad–not ONE (and they can easily be found in the FBI).

If Special Counsel does not move quickly to subpoena the tyrant’s TAX RETURNS so that everyone can see them, so that NOTHING in them can be hidden from public enquiry, his investigation will be nothing but a FARCE, nothing but empty THEATER!!

          • Adam King

Why would the tax returns become public just because Mueller gets them? I bet he controls evidence very carefully and doesn’t tolerate leaks. I think we’re going to get dead silence from his office for months.

Since idiot Dumpy expected no consequence for firing Comey (and actually thought it would be a genius win-win politically!) I think his infantile, lizard-brain really just enjoyed the idea of firing the guy, just because he could. We know how obsessed Dumpy is with physical appearances (and dom/sub games), and Comey is an imposingly tall manly man, with manly good looks. That’s enough to blow Dumpy’s toddler envy circuits right there. Hence – β€œHah! I fire you, tall pretty boy! Who’s tall and pretty now?”

And I honestly think that he’s STILL on that toddler high. Nothing else seems to be sinking into his brain at ALL.

Just a reminder that many anti-Trump folks are still assholes.
No one and I mean NO one supported Weiner when positive proof of what a pervert he was came out.
And if folks want to claim Breitbart was in front of this (they were), mention the Shirley Sherrod tape they edited which cost her a job she loved and her reputation for a time.
Bottom line, Weiner was a POS and when that became clear, he was kicked to the curb.
And folks who want to go after Huma for not doing the same… trust me, not as easy to kick someone you once loved with everything you had to the curb, believe me.
End rant, back to enjoying the Trump implosion show.

    • worstcultever

Wow, that’s some bullshit of an article. It actually tries to cast Weiner’s liberal non-wimphood as something bizarre and “erratic,” and THEN tries to link that to his weird dick/brain disorder, and THEN says, see it’s all because Democrats. So shut up, Democrats. Or something.

Sheezus. Did somebody get paid for that?

  • houstonray

Saw this article earlier….thoughts? FYI, I’m all for Impeachment for BOTH.
    ___________________________________________
    Progressives v President Pence?

Trump’s exceptionally turbulent week prompted even some Republicans to utter the word β€œimpeachment”.

But Democrats – and progressives – are being warned to be careful what they wish for. If Mike Pence took over, could he actually do more damage to progressive causes than Trump, whose frequent clashes with his own party limit his effectiveness?

β€œWe must focus on what is best for the American people, not on what is worst for our so-called president,” writes Jeff Alson at In These Times.

Leading a rallying cry for impeachment could be a strategic blunder for Democrats with long-term consequences. β€œDemocratic ownership of impeachment would also cement the loyalty of working-class Trump voters to the Republican party,” writes Alson.
    ___________________________________________

    • Feels like concern-trolling, because what we end up with is a situation where nothing is done and nothing happens.

There’s also little to no chance of Dems ‘owning’ the impeachment if it happens while they have no Congressional majorities.

      • -M-

In any case they’re obligated to defend the country from an immediate catastrophic threat like Trumpublicanism as best they can even if it’s somehow unpopular.

And “We saved you and your kids and your healthcare from the thieving hell beast.” ought to be a message they can work with.

That pathological LIAR and THIEF is dangerously UNFIT, both morally and intellectually, to be POTUS; and Pence is implicated in this foul MESS up to his filthy NECK!!

They and the entire traitorous regime must be brought DOWN, the Republic DEFENDED and LIBERATED from this NIGHTMARE!!

It is cautious, tremulous RESTRAINT that has gotten us where we are TODAY!!

We have the NUMBERS to PARALYZE any effort they make to take this country down the road to ruthless, fascist CRUELTY!!

They will NOT, for example, strip MILLIONS of their hc insurance and leave tens of THOUSANDS to DIE prematurely every YEAR without our cowardly CONSENT!!

I’m glad that Rachael is ending with a discussion of a conflict with reported information and what was told by the acting AG before congress.

    • jimbo65

Will be all the more interesting to hear what Comey will have to say about all that.

    • I agree: Accuracy is important. Admitting when a mistake is made and erroneous information is reported is important.

Really, when we come down to it, whether Comey either did or was about to ask for more resources or didn’t at all is a relatively unimportant detail.

      • safari

But it will be used against everything else if it is incorrect.

        • houstonray

And as Rachel said, it also goes to motive. If he DID request it and was fired the next day, that looks like an expanded investigation was the reason he was fired. But if not, then that lessons that aspect.

Now of course, Trump’s leaked comment today about taking the pressure off, well that undoes the above anyway.

          • safari

Donald’s excuse for his statement, that the base and GOP will eat up, will be that Comey was being unfair — therefore a nutjob.

I flipped over to FauX News, Hannity was blathering on about the murder of the DNC kid in DC who “he implied” was the source of the hacked emails to Wikileaks instead of Russia. Sigh.

    • safari

They have to default to Hillary is a murderer. It is their only mode.

      • safari

Well, that and Obama is/was more dangerous than Donald.

      • Ninja0980

Weiner, Lewisnky, Tripp and others would have been dead if that were the case.

        • safari

My dad tried to pull the “Hillary is a murder” game during the election. He only voted D beforehand as a union guy. I told him “good, I hope she has a counter on every station in the morning to update her kill count”.

          • safari

It was probably not the best thing to say. But he’s a midwestern, blue collar, stubborn, ass… just the demographic Trump appeals to.

I don’t think the former director of the FBI will take kindly to being called a “nut job” by the President of the United States.

Of course. Donald wouldn’t have spoken to him in private if it weren’t so.

If he’s only NOW coming to that conclusion, he’s rather SLOW.

    • At my last count, we were around 8 breaking Trump-related news stories today alone.

  • Sam_Handwich

We went out for dinner tonight. Hubs is not as much of a news freak as me, but he gets CNN news alerts on his phone and followed the whole shitstorm this afternoon. So he said to me at dinner “Gee, i guess you were right when you said Trump would be a disaster”.

He voted for Bernie in the primary. And then for Hillary, quite begrudgingly, in the general. Not that he was ever a fan of Trump, far from it — but he probably would have opted NOT to vote without my dragging him to the polls this time.

He **enthusiastically** voted for Obama twice and has stated more than one time, much to my surprise, that he wants Michelle to run for president.

Anyway, i think hubs represents a significant portion of the electorate that the Dems need to corral. And it won’t be easy.

    • Bryan

Here’s hoping Tom Perez will be productive.

There is a crop of younger gay men entering legislatures now. We’ll find they are right at home as time goes on.

        • UrsusArctos

The IMPORTANT difference is that this crop of gay legislators are out/proud. The stragglers trying to stay closeted will fail at it.

          • safari

It might be my privilege, but being gay doesn’t matter to the millennials. Transgender (edit: and bisexual) individuals, though, are often foreign.

          • UrsusArctos

There’s uptight assholes among the Millennials too. A good chunk of the alt-Nazi is that age. I lay a lot of that off to inexperience with the real world under less than the “Tiger Mom Helicopter Parent” bubble. But, yeah there are fewer reasons to be closeted these days.

Sad to say but the both parties are the same are a hard thing to work through.
And if you live in NY, I’m sorry to say Cuomo and seven DINOS that allow Republicans to control our state senate have made that argument much easier.

      • Sam_Handwich

I’m lucky to live in Mass with a 90% Dem legislature and (R) Charlie Baker as governor. The local press tries to pretend there are these YUUUGE partisan divides, but in reality it’s mostly wonky crap that doesn’t matter in the end.

        • Ninja0980

I envy you in that regard.

    • Ross

      My experience?

Voted for Kerry. I was not enthusiastic.

Voted for Obama twice. I was mildly enthusiastic.

Voted for Hillary. I was wildly enthusiastic.

      • billbear1961

        Mine, too.

      • Sam_Handwich

to be honest, i voted for all of them enthusiastically.

        • safari

Kerry was in the era of “let’s beat-up the gays… this is a moral election!”

Obama was an unknown in the era of “oh look, the establishment crashed the *global* economy. And then we recovered faster than the 2008 candidate predicted”.

And then Hillary: maligned for 20 years with no fire given the smoke people kept trying to blow up susceptible asses. “She didn’t smile enough.” “She’s a know it all.” “She’s cold, the murderer.” I did vote for her, but saw the other denizens be idiots around me here in the Midwest.

      • -M-

I was more enthusiastic about Hillary than I would have expected, but I was absolutely and enthusiastically against Trump or any other Rethuglican (or Stein the phony Green) because I’m not a sociopath and I don’t have a deathwish.

I agree. Stunned that they actually did pull it off. I’m sure in some back room, over a few drunken bottles of vodka, they were all cracking jokes, thinking this up saying, oh hell, no way this will work.

WSJ reporting tonight that WH staffers had a “Twitter Intervention” with Trump!

ahem….a MONTH ago. Yeah, how’s that working for ya? BWAHAHAHA!!!!!

    • safari

No, just let it be. It’s a heck of a lot more fun seeing what comes out next.

  • Ninja0980

Watching the Bill Maher show tonight..
Is it wrong that I don’t find the Trump bot as bad as Cornell West, who not only spewed vile things against Hillary and Obama, but insists we respect the viewpoints of Robert George, a man who we all know on this blog as someone who has waged war us in every way possible and will continue to do so until he dies?
Fuck you Cornell, the Trump Boris reject isn’t as loathsome as you are.
You helped give us Trump more then he did, period.

    • safari

West is a violent psychopath. Donald is a clinical narcissist with zero memory. One is deliberately evil, the other is just chaotically evil.

    • Lazycrockett

I can’t get past the constant “My brother” bs.

  • The hubris is astonishing. This isn’t Rosie O’Donnell he just took on. Comey isn’t afraid of him. Comey doesn’t have anything to be afraid of. And this isn’t a PR battle like he’s used to. But then maybe he’s right. What can anyone possible say that will make Trump’s fans (the GOP base) turn on him if they haven’t already?

    • Skeptical_Inquirer

It’s not just Comey though. Having a good % of the intelligence community as your foe isn’t a trifle.

      • We have to stop deluding ourselves that some piece of information is going to make Trump’s base turn on him. It’s not. Most of what we know from inside his administration is from frustrated staffers leaking to the press. None of this has made any difference. Yes, his approval ratings are down, but the base is still pro-Trump and most of them HATE the GOP establishment. They are afraid of their own voters. They fear them more than they fear being publicly humiliated for defending someone who is a traitor to our country. That’s the level of fear. This isn’t a normal situation in which people will change their opinion based on facts. Facts don’t matter. We are in a post-truth culture now. None of us have really accepted the reality we live in. We are all still hanging onto a false hope that sanity will be restored, but we don’t have any roadmap to get there until at least 2021. I don’t like saying these things, but it’s heartbreaking watching people believe things that just aren’t going to happen. We all spent all of 2016 believing that every new revelation about Trump would be his undoing and yet here we are. 2017 will be more of the same. Yes, resist. We have to make the Senate as afraid of us as they are of the Teabaggers. Only that will keep us from getting the horror show that Ryan is pushing through the House. And we have to turn out the vote in 2018. But Trump isn’t going away. We have to prepare for a long slog because this isn’t going to end soon.

        • Ninja0980

What hurts us more is Sanders and his ilk making the case Hillary and other Democrats who don’t kiss his ass are just as bad or worse then Trump.
Makes you want to rip your hair out.

        • Skeptical_Inquirer

Realistically, I don’t expect hardcore Trumpeteers to change their minds nor do I expect Trump to be out of here any time soon.

And I don’t think McCain or Graham or any other GOP pol is worth a bucket of spit. What I’m enjoying (not quite the proper word) is that Trump has made a lot of not-completely-powerless people pissed who will stop or at least slow down a lot of what he’s doing.

          • McCain and Graham talk tough on cable news but vote the straight party line. Anyone expecting anything from them is truly delusional. The same for Susan Collins. She actually introduced racist Jeff Sessions to be nominated for AG. I’ll believe they will stand up to this crap when they do it. And that will only be after everyone else is and it’s safe to do so. They want to be seen as reasonable by the media and their friends at the Georgetown cocktail parties but they stand for nothing except getting themselves re-elected.

    • Ninja0980

Nothing will make Trump’s fans turn on him, which is why Bernie and others need to shut the fuck up about reaching out to them, they are beyond that.

      • Ross

        I agree.

Only 20% of America voted for the fucker.

        And fuck these deplorables. Forever.

Includes my one Aunt and Uncle but since they won’t turn on Brownback and other far right Republicans when other members of my mom’s family have..
They are beyond help, which is why none of us talk to them anymore.

      • -M-

Reaching out to them*, with real solutions to real problems and telling them how they’ve been had is fine. Selling out to their prejudices and sense of entitlement is not.

*along with others, including poor people, immigrants, people of color, women, religious minorities, the whole LGBT+ community πŸ³οΈβ€πŸŒˆ Etc…

      • I tend to retweet David Frum, Evan McMullin and Bill Kristol for criticism of Trump. We don’t really need to swing that many voters or turn out that many people who don’t always vote to make a big difference. A fellow conservative can maybe explain this in language that will make sense to them. The Teabaggers are a lost cause. They are deranged. And no they are not all stupid. I know some very smart people who have drunk the Fox News Kool-Aid for over a decade now and there is no reasoning with them about politics. They hate anything liberal too much to ever vote for any Democrat. Only someone like Nick Kristof still thinks that we just need to talk nicer to them. Been there done that for decades now. It isn’t going to work. We have to reach out to the people who don’t normally vote. And the country club Republicans who STILL think they are in charge of the GOP. The rest? Don’t bother.

        • UrsusArctos

Being “nice” to the far right is what caused this mess. In the deep south, given a choice between a moderate Democrat and a rabid GOPer it was no contest. The same goes for Dems playing GOP-lite.

        • Christopher Smith

Yes, they are all not only stupid but haploid morons. ‘Very smart’ and Teathugs are the empty set; they touch at NO POINT. Sorry.

  • Hue-Man

Someone commented earlier that Trump could use Perry Mason to mount his defence. The centenary of Raymond Burr’s birth is Sunday, May 21st. The Vancouver Province story today includes this fact “you should know”:

Burr, who was briefly married to actress Isabella Ward in 1952, met [Robert] Benevides, a young actor, on the set of Perry Mason in 1960. They remained a couple until Burr’s death.

    http://www.theprovince.com/entertainment/celebrity/five+things+westminster+honours+star+raymond+burr/13381700/story.html
Burr was born in and, following his death in 1993, buried in Vancouver suburb, New Westminster, B.C.

I know, they’re getting what they deserve and a LOT of ’em are going to have a years-long empty spot on their resumes. Right now, they’re finding out Donald has no loyalty to anyone but himself, despite demanding it without question from those near him. What Donald’s going to learn is there’s a long-term cost for that.

    • DaddyRay

Indeed they are getting what they deserve. I wonder how many of them will honor their confidentiality agreement they signed when faced with jail time

      • None. Because compelled testimony would nullify said NDAs.

        • DaddyRay

There has also been questions if NDA’s are even legal when they are not employees of Trump, rather employees of the US Government

          • Skeptical_Inquirer

            I see tons of tell-alls.

          • David L. Caster

My guess is that any “contract” they have with the USG would supercede any private NDA with Trump.

    • This is the actual photo of Pippa’s upscale porta-loos. Aren’t they fancy? If your sister is going to be Queen, she can’t take a dump just anywhere! Or maybe she gets to use the toilet in the house and this is for the commoners. I was amazed you can actually rent this for a wedding, I would hold the entire reception inside here!

Though the responsibility thing seems daunting.

    • billbear1961

Eddi, did you see King Charles III??

He withholds the Royal Assent from a bill which would restrict press freedoms.

When the PM schedules a vote on another bill to abolish the need for the RA, the King exercises his prerogative to dissolve parliament and call for new elections!

It was a very dramatic moment, especially when we saw it on stage.

      http://www.express.co.uk/showbiz/tv-radio/803036/King-Charles-III-Tim-Pigott-Smith-death-BAFTA-BBC

      • Yes. Actually the saying in Parliament for the past 150 years is this–
“The King would have to sign his own death warrant if it was presented to him” (attributed to the editor of The Economist, Walter Bagehot).
        — The last Monarch to actually refuse to give assent to a law was Queen Anne who turned down the Scottish Militia act in 1708 because her Prime Minister advised her to do so – he was worried about a last minute French invasion.
        – The Monarch can throw up a fuss in private — but unless the UK was invaded by a foreign power, or had something extraordinary happen, it is not going to happen. King Charles 1 challenged Parliament and got beheaded because of it. Charles 3 would be advised to keep his πŸ™‚
-The other thing that was just as “odd” was Charles deciding to give a weekly audience to the leader of the opposition on his own volition. This defies precedence. If I were his Prime Minister i would put a stop to it – or cancel my own meetings with him – who does he think he is? It is not up to the Monarch to decide what his role is- his power is assigned by parliament, not given by God.

      • Were there gasps when Diana ghost appeared? It was in very bad taste to say the least. Some people were appalled here.

        • billbear1961

No, we knew it was going to happen. It was in the program.

People laughed at what she said, because she told Charles and then William, in her second appearance, that both would be the greatest king the country had ever had.

      • billbear1961

Where is OUR Sydney Carton to, in this case, sacrifice himself to save the Republic??

        Even if I were that brave–and I am not–FAR from it–*I* wouldn’t do it.

We have the numbers to STOP these fascists–they can’t get away with ANY of their outrages, already underway or planned for the future–without our CONSENT. Large and sustained protests can halt them in their tracks AND rid us of this CORRUPT regime.

We will have NO ONE to blame but OURSELVES if they succeed in destroying this democracy.

And no one should sacrifice himself–or herself–for a nation of cowards that LET these monsters destroy the country.

        • safari

Any victory would actually be pretty quick. Threaten an actual nationwide strike and the markets and their masters will respond quickly. Most likely to remove the broken cog from their machine.

          • safari

Though, I should add: Occupy Wall Street was a nationwide somewhat prolonged in the modern era effort to focus attention to the plight of the non 1%. It was brought down by the Obama administration via the FBI in a multi-city coordinated response.

          • billbear1961

I think you mean plight of the non-1%. It’s the 1% who are a BLIGHT.

Occupy had NO effective leadership–they avoided leaders on purpose, as I’m sure you remember–and many of their efforts were weird and scatterbrained.

PASSIVE resistance–the refusal to cooperate–can be VERY effective.

A closed purse and wallet in a society where, sadly, MONEY is the only true GOD–especially to rightists–is louder and more effective than a BOMB.

And much harder for government to undermine.

They can’t FORCE us to shop!

          • billbear1961

I’ve already discussed that with CJ and a friend in Washington State, and have seen talk online.

Imagine if half the country–or even “just” a third–refused to buy a goddamned thing–except for absolute necessities–for a couple days, to start with, and then, if that didn’t work, wasn’t enough, didn’t make a big enough impression, for a week, and so on.

Aside from clogging up the streets with actual physical protests–and VOTING in HONEST elections!–the PASSIVE refusal to purchase anything could be our most POWERFUL weapon!!

          • safari

Any immediate needs could be met with just a small amount of cooperation. Hey, you’re out of dish soap… I’ve got some, etc.

          • billbear1961

That, too, yes, so that even the purchase of necessities would plummet.

WE ARE NOT HELPLESS, although many of the SHITS–the pundits who worship and work for the 1%–in the media are DESPERATE to make us think we are!!

            God DAMN the SCOUNDRELS!!

I really wish they’d include the commercials. They are just as, if not more, interesting to me. I’ve seen Green Acres on Nick At Night… but the flavor of the original presentation is lost. With the Youtube video I’m watching, the commercials are intact since it’s likely a VHS transfer.

        • Reality.Bites

VHS was years away from existing during Green Acres’s original run. It’s either a professional recording (like a network master) or taken from a rerun.

    • -M-

      What shows?

      • safari

This is just the Price is Right, which was at 11am as I grew up. The noon whistle sounded as part of the civil defense check… then the local news came on after; the Bold and the Beautiful followed (though a year later than what I’m watching). I’d then be sent to nap until General Hospital as the Young and the Restless came on.

    • BTW I just found out very good news tonight. I like one new show this year — Timeless on NBC, the NBC time travel sci fi show. I thought it was cancelled on May 10. I just found out they reversed their decision on May 13 and will be renewing it for 10 episodes. I get to see cute Matt Lanter transport around time again fighting bad guys.

  • SDG

    Beginning of the end? Yes/No?

    • Yes, but I would rather it be a long, slow and painful death of the Trump Presidency — until mid 2018 at the earliest. I want the Republicans stymied in Congress. I worry that the American people will rally behind a President Pence and pass his far right wing agenda. Keep your eyes open for the Montana special Congressional election on May 25, and Georgia 6 on June 20. If the Dems take one (prolly Georgia) the impeachment fervor will pick up.

      • That_Looks_Delicious

I think the congressional Democrats are on the same page. They want this whole thing to extend well into the 2018 election cycle, which it looks like it will unless Trump resigns.

        • What I cannot figure out is this — why won’t Trump sit down with Schumer and ask him for some help out of this mess by positioning to the center? He will have to dump Bannon but he wants to do it anyway. Schumer can help him play ball — why not give it a try? He must realize that Ryan is not a friend of his by now. He has dealt with Schumer for a long time and they both are hard headed New York boys. Schumer would rather have a centrist Trump than a right wing President Pence or Ryan.

    • David Milley

We qualify. When we acquired our first cats some thirty years ago, we were shocked to find them sharpening their claws on the corners of the furniture. So Warren nailed big ol’ cedar planks to all the scratching places, so’s not to inconvenience them. Many of the planks are still there, heavily worn.
