REPORT: White House Lawyers Consult Experts In Impeachment Procedures, You Know, Just In Case

CNN reports:

White House lawyers have begun researching impeachment procedures in an effort to prepare for what officials still believe is a distant possibility that President Donald Trump could have to fend off attempts to remove him from office, two people briefed on the discussions tell CNN.

White House officials believe the President has the backing of Republican allies in Congress and that impeachment is not in the cards, according to the people briefed on the legal discussions. Even Democrats have tried to calm impeachment talk out of concern it is premature.

But lawyers in the White House counsel’s office have consulted experts in impeachment during the past week and have begun collecting information on how such proceedings would work, a person briefed on the matter told CNN.

Jesus, exactly. Leaks? Tonight’s been a typhoon.

    • Ninja0980

Indeed, for all the talk about how Republicans were different back in Nixon’s day, the fact is they weren’t in charge of the Senate or House and thus had no control over the investigations.

      • They also weren’t all that different back then either. I remember seeing lots of Republicans on TV backing their guy in the WH, calling the investigation pointless, waste of time, just coincidences, etc. It was over a year before things got serious and some of ’em began acting like they cared.

It took a LOT of smoking guns to bring ’em around.

        • bkmn

A LOT of them did not turn on Nixon until it was clear he was going down. The GOP is very good at circling their wagons around someone to provide cover, they do it so often.

Does anyone think Trump or his followers will let the Republican Party off the hook so easily if he is driven out of office?

    • bkmn

They are damned if they do and damned if they don’t. And a quick reminder that this clustertrump is 100% of their own making.

    • Jukesgrrl

Not that I care, but I agree it will just inspire his hard-core believers to dig deeper into their trenches. They are people who still believe Obama was born in Kenya. Of course they will believe their hero Trump was forced out of office unfairly. They are hateful, ill-informed, lack reasoning skills, and are highly delusional. The deplorables will always be with us.

There are people who think PizzaGate is real.

I think we can count on them to destroy what’s left of the Republican party in 2018 if Trump is impeached (for which I pray daily to Lasagna al Forno). Of course democrats need some post Hillary/Bernie healing if we want to dominate the 2018 election. Seems to still be a pretty touchy subject…

You know, I just realized something. When Obama was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize there was plenty of mocking (in Norway one of the main theories was that one of the guys on the committee seized on the chance to meet Obama), but the prize wasn’t really for Obama, was it. It was for the people who ELECTED Obama. The people who voted for peace and sanity and liberty.

You’re a Nobel Peace prize winner!

      • Lelosh

        It’s called a Ball Chart.
It could be used to adjust the width and horizontal height controls on your analog tube-type TV receiver so as to make round circles and minimize distortion on the TV screen. I used to be an analog video engineer for those ancient things (I’m really old).

Broadcast television stations in the 50s and early 60s usually went off the air at night, but in the morning – about 5 or 6am – would show the ball chart first thing in the morning so as to facilitate proper picture geometry at both the transmitter and the receiver to compensate for drift in settings overnight.

We’ve made alot of progress since then – thank your lucky stars!!

“Just remember: we also elected President Obama. Twice.”

And a substantial MAJORITY of us elected Hillary Clinton as President, also!

  • We’re up to at least four stories which would, if alone, otherwise dominate a weekend news cycle.

The WH is leaking like a broke sieve…and oddly enough these leaks are making Donald and all of his closest advisers (including Kusher) look even more guilty than they already do.

I am NOT saying this’ll happen, but VP Pence and the majority of the cabinet remained behind…enough to invoke 25th Amendment *if they wanted to*.

Meanwhile, Air Force One is in the air and the inner circle of Donald’s administration and closest advisers are all basically incommunicado until they land…and for the duration of this trip, necessarily constrained in just how much they can control coverage related to them.

    • zhera

The timing of this torrent of breaking stories is rather interesting. Is Pence finally setting his plan in motion?

It can also result in felony charges.

    • Smokey

A clearance website summarizes it better than I could: “therefore, any criminal charges must be filed in a Federal District Court by the charging agency. If convicted, the criminal penalties include fines of up to $10,000 and/or imprisonment up to five years….I have seen a few rare cases where criminal charges were pursued, mostly in instances where the falsification was egregious and involved withholding information on serious criminal conduct. In all of these cases the individual was found guilty and convicted of a felony offense.”

      • That’s why I said “can.” An oversight omission is one thing; happens often for those who’ve led complicated lives. But these omissions from Kushner’s applications appear to have been deliberate, to hide both meetings and financial obligations involving Russians.

  • Oh, my mistake. #5 in the Friday breaking news parade will be The Daily Beast:
    http://www.thedailybeast.com/articles/2017/05/19/trump-officials-he-looks-more-and-more-like-a-complete-moron

“Trump himself hasn’t been implicated in any of these leaks except where he’s implicated himself, where he says something that makes his perhaps less-than-sterling intentions clear,” said the official, who spoke on condition of anonymity in order to discuss the controversy candidly. “He keeps saying there’s no collusion, and I think he’s right. So if he would just shut his trap, what would Dems have?”

“Okay, he fired Comey,” the official conceded. “With a semi-competent comms operation, that would blow over in 24 hours. And that’s the worst part: he has a competent comms staff. But they can’t do their jobs because he keeps running his mouth.”

Those complaints echo weeks of griping from administration and White House officials who say that Trump, through unscripted tweets and statements to the press, has undermined a White House communications operation that is trying to dig him out of a very deep public relations hole—not to mention the legal bind the president may find himself in.

Trump’s repeated media missteps have frustrated even longtime supporters. “Every day he looks more and more like a complete moron,” said one senior administration official who also worked on Trump’s campaign. “I can’t see Trump resigning or even being impeached, but at this point I wish he’d grow a brain and be the man that he sold himself as on the campaign.”

I sarcastically commented previously that I was anxious to count how many times in his speech in Saudi Arabia Trump utters the phrase that he and other Republicans attacked Obama and Clinton for never saying. According to a draft of his speech, he unsurprisingly doesn’t say it a single time.
    https://twitter.com/JonLemire/status/865692512593293313

    • That’ll be McMaster’s doing, my guess. Or maybe it’s just the usual thing where Donald wants something from the Saudis, so he’ll go out of his way not to insult them.

      • MikeBx2

I’m pretty certain you won’t hear anyone of Trump’s team say it while in a Muslim country. They only attacked Obama and Clinton for not saying it in order to rile up their Islamophobic base.

        • -M-

All the responsible national security adults always agreed it would be a stupid thing to say. Implying that all Muslims are the same as Islamist terrorists would cost us a lot of support and make recruiting easier for the other side by validating the extremists’ “they’re out to get us” worldview.

          • MikeBx2

Of course, but that’s not what Trump told his bigoted supporters during the campaign.

  • Highmoremotel
  • There will be no impeachment so long as Republicans have a majority in the House. There won’t even be impeachment hearings. And even if Democrats manage to take back the House and impeach him there is no way the Senate votes to remove him from office (as that takes 2/3 or 67 senators and there’s no way Democrats get that big a margin even if by some miracle they retake the Senate. Look at the list of seats up in 2018. The map is stacked against Democrats in the next election.) Sorry but this impeachment talk is a pipe dream. Only if the base turns on Trump does anything happen and Republicans as we have seen would sooner burn the country to the fucking ground than give Democrats even the tiniest hint of victory.

    • DaddyRay
