Dynasty Reboot: A First Look [VIDEO]

The AV Club reports:

The CW has released a trailer for its new “Dynasty” to premiere in fall. Fans of the original campy, soapy, sexy ’80s ABC nighttime drama will not be disappointed. But rather than focus on the angel-vs-bitch, first wife vs the new wife set-up pitting Krystal against Alexis (AKA Linda Evans and Joan Collins), this reboot will showcase daughter Fallon pitted against her father’s new love, this time a Latina named Cristal. Holy diversity!

Who knows if the family business is still oil (they are now a “global energy empire”), but the Carringtons (headed by former “Melrose Place” stud Grant Show) are still a sexy, usually unclothed lot. Brother Steven is still gay and apparently horny. This time, randy Sammy Jo is a boy! (Sorry Heather Locklear!) Another difference in this series — Steven is decidedly gay and not ambiguous and he kisses men. A lot.

Hey, there’s a new Star Trek series coming.

    • safari

That takes place in the prime universe 🙁

    • Gustav2

      So it could get worse.

    • Adam King

…that you have to subscribe to CBS’s otherwise useless streaming service to watch. No thanx.

  • joeyj1220

meh… I’m more excited for Netflix and Jim Henson’s group teaming up to re-boot The Dark Crystal

My television machine resides at the bottom of a landfill. I regret nothing.

If you aren’t going to do it better, don’t do it.

    • GayOldLady

LOL!!! That was a weak cat fight and that right cross thrown by Krystal missed by about a foot. I’ve seen much better cat fights than that in the parking lot at a lesbian bar. 🙂

      • Rex

A show set in a lesbian bar, all the comedy, drama, and sexy women anyone could want. Plus the cat fights.

        • GayOldLady

HBO came close with The L Word.

          • e jerry powell

That was Showtime, and it still didn’t have enough catfights.

          • Showtime, honey. And it wasn’t even in the same ballpark. I’ve bartended and bouncered in Ghurls Barz…. trust me, drunk lesbians are fucking SCARY!

          • GayOldLady

Yep, Showtime. Thanks for reminding me. Sometimes this old brain malfunctions.

          • DonnaLee

But not enough sex in it for me. And too much angst.

          • GayOldLady

            LOL. Not nearly enough. 😀

      • greenmanTN

Don’t quote me on this because it was many years ago and I’m too lazy to look it up, but Linda Evans and Joan Collins had a short-lived stage show, but Linda quit because Joan was too rough. Basically people were paying to see Joan Collins beat the shit out of Linda Evans, which frankly I would have paid to see too.

      • e jerry powell

I’ve seen much better cat fights than that in the parking lot at a lesbian bar.

        Haven’t we all?

    • Todd
  • Tulle Christensen

So all these reboots, movies, tv shows, can we get a Obama presidency reboot?

    • safari

This time he’ll be a woman.

      • barrixines

        Played by Tori Spelling.

        • Tawreos

          Not that, anything but that

          • safari

We’re in a mirror universe. Everything is possible.

I repeat, not that anything but that =)

          • Librarykid

            alternative facts or reality?

          • ted-

Aaaw, why not? She’s weirdly funny.

          • Tawreos

Something about her just irritates me every time I see her on a screen.

          • ted-

I get the same feeling with Trump and his GOP thugs. But, it’s followed by anger and despair.

      The horror. The horror.

  • Gustav2

Ummmm, is that the Spelling-like mansion?

    • Todd

It looks similar in the aerial shot but it’s not the house. The Manor is a W shape while the house (cough–McMansion–cough) in the trailer is X-shaped. I think the house in the trailer is somewhere outside of Atlanta.

    • Adam King

Whatever it is it’s tacky as shit.

    • Todd

OK, I found it. The house in the trailer is Tyler Perry’s former house outside of Atlanta. http://buzz.blog.ajc.com/2016/05/03/tyler-perrys-house-finally-sells/ It was on the market for years, and it’s very tacky.

      • Gustav2

Oh and cant wait till Steven goes straight in season 2 .

  • Jon Doh

There aren’t enough shoulder pads left in the world for a proper reboot.

  • another_steve

Men kissing men on TV is a welcomed and relatively new phenomenon.

Women kissing women is old hat. Been happening on TV for a long while now — largely because it’s a turn-on for heterosexual guys.

    • Avenger280

      Don’t! You! Even! Go! There!

This is a trigger issue for me. There is WORLD of difference between straight male girl-on-girl porn and Lesbian eroticism.

GoG is demeaning. It is geared toward leering straight men who have no clue about how women truly love each other. Lesbians HATE IT!!!!!!!!

Lesbians are about feelings and slow build-ups. We want characters who care about each other and possess strengths. We also want to see women making out the way we actually do.

Women kissing women IS NOT OLD HAT!!!!!! It has been used for years by straight men as a ratings grabber with absolutely NO REGARD for the feelings of lesbian/bi women.

If you’ve got the fortitude and desire, I’m happy to point you toward a show that features a lesbian couple that in no way plays to the creepy straight male gaze. If you have Netflix, you would do well to invest some time in the contemporary supernatural western WYNONNA EARP. Wy is herself a straight alcoholic biker chick with an ass-load of warrants and issues. She is also the demon-hunting great-great-granddaughter of Wyatt Earp (FWIW she’s also sleeping with Doc Holliday. Yes, THAT Doc Holliday. Don’t ask, it’s complicated 😉 ) Her baby sister Waverly is a super-smart brainy badass who is also bisexual and in love with the dashing lesbian cop Nicole Haught. If you really care about what moves lesbians (we ARE your sisters) you could start with this show.

(BTW…. one of the early episodes features the search by a gay man for his lover. Their story is rather sad but the show’s large lesbian/bi following is hoping they’ll both be back in future seasons).

      • Avenger280
      • another_steve

        Great observations, Avenger. Thanks.

Not sure anything I said in my comment conflicts with what you’ve said. By “old hat” I simply meant that women passionately kissing women has been an element in American TV shows for some years now — as opposed to men kissing men, which is a relatively new phenomenon.

I totally get the distinction you make re how TV’s depiction of lesbian sexual intimacy isn’t necessarily the average lesbian’s notion/fantasy of lesbian sexual intimacy.

(This is controversial, but..) I think male sexuality is very different than female sexuality. I think men and women are brain-wired differently in this area and I think the different wiring serves some biological evolutionary purpose we can only guess at.

Men are sexual pigs. Trust me: I’m one of them and I’ve known a whole lot of ’em in my lifetime. Emotional/affectional feelings are for most men unrelated to the male sexual urge or the male sexual orgasm. I hear you saying that for women it’s different, and that makes sense to me.

        Thanks for the interesting exchange.

  • Natty Enquirer

The charm of the original lies in its broadcast-mandated sexual repression and channeling of that energy into campy conflict. When the sex becomes more explicit, it just turns slutty and dull.

  • Rex

I’m sure OMM and Bill Donahue will give this a rave review.

  • Cuberly

CSI-Kentucky. Theme : who is stealing marriage license from the table clothed wearing county clerk and keep gay marrying the community? Is it husband number 1 to 4 or the stolen puppy?

          • Adam King

            Now that’s a show I’d watch.

        • Gustav2

CSI Des Moines? How many opioid stories can you do?

They have overdone comic characters. The only one that I like is Riverdale, the Archie themed one. I always read the Archie comics.

I never recovered from my Dynasty addiction, dammit – now I’m going to be hooked again!

  • GayOldLady

1 Million Mom’s are really going to have a field day with this one.

They should add a right-wing christian mom caught in scandal just to piss off the OMMs.

      • GayOldLady

That’s actually a really good idea.

    • Joe in PA

Knotts Landing, Falcon Crest? Ugh, just ugh.

I never watched Dynasty except for the excerpts (cat fights and clothes and one-line zingers).

      • If you watched it as camp (which my friends and I did) it was hilarious. I remember us laughing at Alexis’s enormous shoulder pads, the overacting and the ridiculous plots. Did anyone take this crap seriously? Women rolling around in the mud in fake-designer couture? That’s some funny shit. The only way it could be campier would be if they had done it with drag queens.

        • Tawreos

Can we re-reboot and cast drag queens, because that I would watch.

          • canoebum

Where is Divine when you need her?

        • Adam King

Divine as Crystal Carrington…what a missed opportunity.

        • Duh-David

“The only way it could be campier would be if they had done it with drag queens.”

          It wasn’t?

          • mattkorey

They did. All the fight scenes were actually men dressed up as Joan Collins and Linda Evans. When you got back and look at it now it is so easy to see it. Do you think those two are actually going to roll around in the mud and slug each other in the face?

          • Ray Taylor

The TV resolution was 240 and the video too fuzzy to tell.

          • Oh, Parker

Actually Linda Evans did most of her own stunts. Joan had a stunt double named Sandy Wilson. About the only time Linda didn’t do her own was when she was playing her double, Rita, and they had to have a stunt woman because she couldn’t fight herself.

        • Joe in PA

Oh of course. I can remember ROARING with laughter over the queen of Moldavia bit. Ah good times. 🙂

          • There was absolutely nothing in the show grounded in any kind of reality except perhaps the father’s homophobia. (He got away with murdering Stephen’s lover, after all.)

      • JWC

damned near had to surremder my Gay Card

  • RavennaBonet

    it look dreadful

  • That_Looks_Delicious

Somebody (was it Bloomberg?) said about Trump that he was “a poor man’s idea of what a rich man is like.” I kind of feel the same way about Dynasty.

    • barrixines

Another one of my gay failings is that I have never actually seen Dynasty – and part of the reason was whenever I saw a clip, for a family of oil billionaires they all seemed to spend a lot of their time standing in front of brown hessian wallpaper next to a non-china jardiniere.

      • I did too but it was the early 80s and I was a not quite out gay boy in East Texas. I agree that it’s what poor people think rich people are like. Or rather, it’s what people who read The National Enquirer think rich people are like.

        • barrixines

For me it’s also part of the gulf between our two cultures. American soaps like Dynasty were all about shoulderpads and international canapes where British ones were about finding ten bob for the gas meter and rickets.

          • Dallas wasn’t originally conceived as a soap. There were no continuing stories at first. That changed in the second season and that’s when the show took off. American daytime soaps had tended to show a wide range of economic levels in the same community. The people who worked for the rich people would have their own story lines, love interests, etc. By the early 80s the focus was almost entirely on the rich people. So we did have what you are talking about at one time. In fact when Roseanne premiered in the late 80s I don’t think there were any shows with working class characters on tv in any format. Part of that is that Americans don’t really believe in class and we all like to think that we will be rich one day so such shows are aspirational and I think that’s part of the reason that we see rich people behaving in a way that no actual rich person would (except Trump). It’s a poor person’s fantasy of rich people. I also think that unless someone is incredibly clever about it (usually in comedy, see: Roseanne) most of us want to watch people struggle with our own everyday problems. Maybe UK audiences are different. We don’t get that many UK shows in the US frankly and they tend to be the ones about rich people (Downton Abbey, AbFab, etc.).

          • Grant Hallowbard

I miss Roseanne, and The Drew Carey show, because, for a while, it was okay to not be rich. It was okay to struggle paying the bills.

          • Grant Hallowbard

That’s also why I like Bob’s Burgers. They struggle, they juggle the bills, they have fun and make their own thrills.

        • You too eh? East Texas in the 80s

          • I was out by the early 80s but not to anywhere better until mid 90s (NYC).

        • Kenneth Sean Campbell

Where in East Texas? I came out in East Texas in 1966!

      • bambinoitaliano

You did not miss anything. Stephen Carrington was so blend you still need Blue Boys and Inches to masturbate to after.

      • Rex

I didn’t either. It started airing during my college years and I didn’t watch any TV then, just school and work. I remember people talking about it, and also the Cosby show was popular and I never saw an episode.

        • Ray Taylor

I was too busy in San Francisco to watch it, busy working and drinking etc.

      • Strepsi

      • Adam King

        Both is preferable.

    • bambinoitaliano

Hmmmm gonna add that to my bucket list- Fuck rich people. :p

  • I was in high school when Dynasty debuted. I was deeply closeted but surreptitiously (I had a tv in my room) watched anything with even the hint of male homosexuality. The gay character Stephen was a mess but along with Jodie (Soap) shows us the limits of what producers could do with gay characters int he late 70s and early 80s. Both Jodie and Stephen were conflicted and kept trying to be straight. The producers (I think) were trying to do more but the backlash was from the audience as much as from religious right groups. You get a real sense of that on Soap which was filmed before a live audience. The audience reaction to Jodie’s male partners was always negative, and this was LA, not Alabama. So hopefully they will get this right. Frankly I don’t know why they want to reboot this show rather than create something completely different. There’s a lot of this lately and most of it is crap. In fact, I’m trying to think of one of these reboots that has been watchable much less good.

    • bdsmjack

I think they should reboot The Golden Girls with gay men of a certain age. They could just use the same scripts.

      • Many of the writers were gay men. I’ve long said that many of us like the show because (if we’re lucky) that is our senior years living in a house with a group of friends in retirement. The only question is: are you Dorothy, Rose, Blanche or Sophia. (Note: Sex and the City is merely a prequel to The Golden Girls. It’s the same characters at a different moment.)

  • liondon#iamnotatraitor

Is it sad that Dynasty night at the local gay bar was one of the best times in my life?

      No,

      • Jon Doh

Thank you! It was kind of like JMG and yous guys, a couple of dozen guys critiquing everything on the screen. There was a lesbian bar across the street, and I always wondered if they had Dynasty night, but I think not. 😉

I’m still in mourning as a result of Downton Abbey ending.

I’ve been recording Victorian Slum to watch later. I saw a scene last night, I will watch it soon.

My mother and I used to watch Dynasty together. After Pamela Sue Martin left, as Fallon, it sucked donkey balls and not in a good way.

  • Oh, Parker

I’ll never forget D&D nights. Dinner and Dynasty at the local bars. It was my favorite show when it aired. I’ll give this reboot a chance but we don’t have CW so who knows when I’ll see it. But to me, if there’s no Alexis, I don’t see the point.

  • StudioTodd

    Well. That looks awful.
