BREAKING: Current White House Official Identified As “Significant Person Of Interest” In Russia Probe

The Washington Post reports:

The law enforcement investigation into possible coordination between Russia and the Trump campaign has identified a current White House official as a significant person of interest, showing that the probe is reaching into the highest levels of government, according to people familiar with the matter.

The senior White House adviser under scrutiny by investigators is someone close to the president, according to these people, who would not further identify the official.

The revelation comes as the investigation also appears to be entering a more overtly active phase, with investigators shifting from work that has remained largely hidden from the public to conducting interviews and using a grand jury to issue subpoenas. The intensity of the probe is expected to accelerate in the coming weeks, the people said.

The sources emphasized that investigators remain keenly interested in people who previously wielded influence in the Trump campaign and administration but are no longer part of it, including former national security adviser Michael Flynn and former campaign chairman Paul Manafort.

MSNBC is gonna be fun tonight.

The other night Rachel was griping about how, yet again, another show prep was torpedoed at 6PM by yet another blockbuster scoop. I guess this is better because the competing scoops by WaPo and NYTimes came out at 3PM?

      • Jonathan Smith

hey team tRump still has ’till 10pm to screw something else up……

Wasn’t it Deep Throat that told us to work from the edges to the top?

Current White House Official Identified As “Significant Person Of Interest”
    Other than Trump?

    • They can’t investigate Trump apparently. He is President. Someone said it on MSNBC last night. Can someone correct me here please if I am wrong? He is untouchable as long as he is President.

      • safari

He can be investigated but he cannot go to trial — or at least it is a part of law that hasn’t been completely examined. Courts are reluctant to serve as a presidential remedy when the Constitution sets out impeachment as a removal option.

        • But- he can fire anyone in the Justice Department, FBI, or anyone not under Congressional oversight right? So who would have the nerve to accuse him of anything?

          • safari

He can. They aren’t a separate branch. It would look very, very bad.

          • The_Wretched

Robert Mueller would be one such man with the nerves to do it.

          • Robincho

He so much as touches Mueller and it’s game-set-match…

          • clay

The (GOP-led) House is who would have to make the (formal) accusation.

    • Todd20036

      Trump isn’t very interesting.

      • RoFaWh

Wow! Did you ever say a mouthful! He must be deadly boring at a party with his incessant me, me, me, I, I, I combined with an inability to discuss any adult topic.

        • TampaDink

His boorishness will be highlighted when he’s in Sicily attending the G7 summit.

          • kareemachan

You know, flight-wise, Sicily is just a hop, skip, and a jump to Cyprus….

          • clay

seems like Cyprus would even be on the way to SA and from Isr.

          • TampaDink

Do they extradite criminals to the U.S.?

  • skyweaver

That’s it. Trump’s larger-than-life assholery aside, these are leaks designed to make him look awful politically and legally. There is *strategy* here. This is absolutely riveting stuff

    • safari

I’ll note that evidently McMullin was at the meeting where McCarthy discussed Donald being paid by the Russians.

    • CPT_Doom

The story below this one – on Donald’s comments to the Russians, could only have come from a White House insider, and most of them are on AF1 right now. Whoever is left basically direct dialed the NYTimes as soon as the wheels were up. Pence, I note, is still in town.

      • Robincho

Maybe the as-yet-unsung hero in all of this will turn out to be a lowly aviation mechanic on an otherwise routine inspection…

        • clay

Uh, did you hear that the Air Force found some Boeing mechanics fucked up contaminated one of the AF1 fleet’s engines passenger oxygen systems with flammable materials?

          • Robincho

            Go on…

          • clay

            http://www.military.com/daily-news/2017/05/11/damaged-air-force-one-cost-millions-dollars-fix-air-force-says.html

I was wrong. It wasn’t an engine, it was the oxygen system that could have caught fire.

“The Air Force . . . report concluded “three Boeing mechanics contaminated the aircraft’s oxygen system by using tools, parts and components that did not comply with cleanliness standards while checking oxygen lines for leaks.” The problem was discovered when an unapproved regulator was found connected to the passenger oxygen system.”

          • Bluto

I’m an engineer. Flaming oxygen systems are really, really bad.

          • Orly

Indeed. Plus, if you get too much you get too high. Not enough, and you’re gonna die.

            Be safe people!

Maybe somewhere within the bowels of their building, a Watergate War Room sat untouched for 40 years.

      • The_Wretched

It’ll make for a dramatic scene in a movie where they move back in and dust the place.

        • safari

Considering we are all living in a real life drama, I’m going to pretend that did in fact happen

Wouldn’t it be funny (in a not “ha-ha” sense) if the VP was feeding the press and the FBI/CIA tidbits to undermine the shitgibbon in chief? Or perhaps one of his closest aides? Wouldn’t be beyond belief, would it? I hope the shitgibbon has given this a lot of thought.

    • safari

I think it probably is Pence. I imagine there’s the traditional GOP and Donald groups fighting it out.

    • The_Wretched

If so, Pence is an idiot. He’s implicated on everything in the transition and is reportedly brought in by Donny the Unfit on policy decisions.

  • -M-

Ugh. Flynn lied, but I’m tired of people saying that he lied to Pence as if that wasn’t a highly dubious assertion.

    • billbear1961

What Did Pence Know and When Did He Know It?

The New York Times has reported that former NSA Michael Flynn told the Trump transition team’s chief lawyer, Donald McGahn, on Jan. 4 that he was under federal investigation as an unregistered paid foreign agent. In March, Vice President Mike Pence said that he had just learned of Flynn’s work as a Turkish agent. Josh Marshall, of Talking Points Memo, tries to connect the dots here. Pence was the head of the transition team, and McGahn reported to him.

Marshall raises the question of whether McGahn relayed this bit of information to his boss, Pence, or kept it a secret, even though he knew Flynn was in line to get one of the most sensitive positions in government. If McGahn didn’t tell his boss that the person about to be named NSA was a foreign agent, he is guilty of gross malfeasance, or worse. This seems somewhat unlikely, however. If he told Pence about it immediately, which is more probable, then Pence lied in March when he said he had just learned about it. If Robert Mueller ever gets Pence and McGahn under oath, he might want to inquire about the matter.

IF he gets them under oath–IF!!

  • Richard B

    I have a constitutional question:
If Trump and other key surrogates are determined in a court of law to be guilty of treason for colluding with Russia to unfairly taint and redirect the outcome of our national elections, which arguably is what happened, why should the citizens of the United States get stuck with Mike Pence as POTUS, who unfairly got to where he is through a tainted illegal process? Why not call for a new election or declare Hillary the 2016 victor ?

    • MassageBear

      Or Gorsuch?

    • Natty Enquirer

Your question is moot because Russia is not a declared enemy of the U.S. and thus, while it’s possible to commit other crimes in connection with Russia, treason, as defined by the U.S. Constitution, has not occurred.

      • canoebum

Is cyber warfare not warfare? I think your argument is thin, really thin.

        Section 3.
Treason against the United States, shall consist only in levying War against them, OR in adhering to their Enemies, giving them Aid and Comfort. The word is “or”, not “and”.

Is a cyber attack on the United States not an attack? If a foreign power acts to deliberately undermine our government and create disorder and impede its function, if you attack the United States, as Russia apparently did here, are you not an “Enemy”? If you collude with the persons responsible for the attack, obstruct justice to hide your role and theirs, are you not giving them “Aid and Comfort”?

    • Sam_Handwich

there’s no constitutional process to discard the election results or hold a new election.

      • safari

The right keeps telling us that’s what the 2nd Amendment is for.

      • Ragnar Lothbrok

        New amendment time !

      • -M-

Which doesn’t really mean it can’t be done, but it’s hard to imagine the Republicans agreeing to a do over or putting Hillary or some other Democrat in office even as a place holder.

    • RidingTheLine

Removal of the President and Vice President just causes the line of succession to be followed, starting with the Speaker of the House, Paul Ryan, then the oldest serving senator of the party in control of the Senate (President pro tempore), Senator Orrin Hatch of Utah, then it goes down through the Cabinet by a predetermined rank.

      • -M-

The line of succession obviously wasn’t designed to cope with collusion between the President and a majority in the Senate to fill the cabinet with scum.

        • RidingTheLine

Nope. But Ryan and Hatch are less awful than anyone above or below them in the line of succession, and the real plus with Hatch is that he is old, really old. Could you imagine “President” DeVos? Keeping Trump would be almost a better idea.

    • Jukesgrrl

The constitution wasn’t written with instructions on how to handle a coup, which this surely is. It’s not just a president behaving badly (which they expected might happen). It’s an entire cabal trying to suppress the vote, deny rights to citizens, divide the country into haves and have-nots while empowering and enriching the haves. The government this cabal wants to install is a far cry from what our founders intended.

      • Richard B

exactly my point, the unfair ascension of Trump should be viewed as a soft coup d’état coordinated by hundreds of Russian agents and many Trump surrogates. Removal of a lone errant president is one thing, removing an illegitimate administration clandestinely brought to power by a foreign adversary is something our constitution doesn’t speak to.

  • TrollopeReader

    • General intertoobz consensus seems to be he’s the most obvious target.
      – Close personal adviser to Donald? Check
      – Word of him urging daddy-in-law to fire Comey ASAP? Check
      – Lied on financial disclosure and security clearance forms? Check
      – Lied repeatedly about meetings with Russian officials? Check
      – In debt, undisclosed, to the tune of $1b to Russian bank? Check
      – Up to his eyeballs in shady business deals that look damned like money laundering and U.S. sanctions violations? Check

Only other person close to that level of potential wrongdoing & within the administration right now as a close adviser would be Ivanka…who is not alleged to have had illegal secret meetings with Russian officials, at the present time.

      • David Walker

Who knew she could keep her mouth shut when so concertedly open? Besides, hasn’t the abstinence until marriage crowd determined that a blowjob isn’t sex?

      • Anastasia Beaverhousen

Oh, I better call Ivanka and give her relationship advice about having a spouse in jail. Poor Stanley, thanksgivings were the worst without him.

        • Reality.Bites

I know. The leftovers alone could crumble the foundation in the manse.

      • David Walker

I have to admit to some surprise about Jared. 45 is an idiot, that’s a given. But even without legal training, I’d think anyone would know that firing the investigator who’s investigating you is not a good idea. How could Jared even briefly think that he’d be able to pull this off? As for the other stuff…well, he learned from the masters, 45 and Kushner the jailbird father.

        • Donald is controlled by his impulses and impatience. A patient man would’ve planned carefully, tolerated the existence of investigations, sought means to starve them of funding & information, etc.

But he’s obsessed with two things and appears incapable of shutting up about them:
          – Insisting his electoral win was both legit and huge
          – Insisting he’s not under any investigation whatsoever, despite all of the evidence to the contrary.

But as our friend Ross would confirm, Donald really is simply that ignorant and has the attention span and short-term memory of a goldfish.

We need to take the house back in ’18 , THEN start impeachment of trump and pence to get a democratic president. Till then , let’s make them as miserable as possible !

    • billbear1961

If the coup succeeds–if this obstruction of justice is not put down NOW–there won’t BE any more honest elections.

Interference in future elections–by the de facto one-party state already forming AND its Russian allies–will be as bad or WORSE in future.

Count on it–let them get away with it THIS time, and it will only get WORSE.

Why wouldn’t it when they SEE what they’re being allowed to get away with?!

The pushback against this coup must be FEROCIOUS.

The coup must be CRUSHED, or the Republic is FINISHED!!
