Soundgarden’s Chris Cornell Dies At Age 52

The Associated Press reports:

Rocker Chris Cornell, who gained fame as the lead singer of the bands Soundgarden and later Audioslave, has died at age 52, according to his representative. Cornell, who had been on tour, died Wednesday night in Detroit, Brian Bumbery said in a statement to The Associated Press.

Bumbery called the death “sudden and unexpected” and said his wife and family were shocked by it. The statement said the family would be working closely with the medical examiner to determine the cause and asked for privacy.

With his powerful, nearly four-octave vocal range, Cornell was one of the leading voices of the 1990s grunge movement with Soundgarden, which emerged as one of the biggest bands out of Seattle’s emerging music scene, joining the likes of Nirvana, Pearl Jam and Alice in Chains.

52 (also my age) is way too young to die, yet old evil fools like Pat Robertson still consume oxygen.
    RIP Chris Cornell.

    • Silver Badger

Only 52? Not even elder gay status? Well! You kids.

    • Todd20036

You sure Pat is still alive? That’s debatable.

      • Boreal

The parasite inside is still using the body.

        • So he’s a Goa’uld? I always took him for an Ori myself…

      • Beagle

He’s still alive — if you call that living.

      • He only looks deceased. He is, in fact, still functional.

  • AJD

That’s sad – I grew up listening to Soundgarden.

RIP Chris — Superunknown was a great album and the soundtrack to my like for a brief period.

Of all the places to die, Detroit

    • TuuxKabin

Could of been what did it? No offense to Detroit and environs, just sayin’.

    • whollyfool

Wxyz is reporting possible suicide. 🙁

  • That_Looks_Delicious

This is strange. I recognize the name of the band from seeing it many times, but I don’t recognize any of their songs. I don’t remember hearing any of these songs before. Not sure how I missed that, because I do remember some Nirvana songs.

    Anyways, RIP Mr. Cornell.

  • Boy Elvis

I was one of those queer punk types in my youth, and I loved the whole grunge / alt thing. (And I still do.) Soundgarden was a great band and Chris Cornell was an incredible vocalist.

    • Todd20036

He was pretty darn cute too. A 3 some with him and Trent Reznor….

  • Mike Solo

Was just listening to him in the gym about an hour ago 🙁

Had Scream and You know my name on… Scream was one of my favorite songs during a rough time in the Middle East

  • TuuxKabin

I don’t know of this talented young man, but will appreciate him posthumously.

Thank you Joe for the wide reaching news you bring here. On all fronts.

My condolences to family, friends and fans of Chris Cornell.

  • Holy shit.

  • RaygunsGoZap

I used to run into him on Capitol Hill here in Seattle back in the day. Such a gorgeous guy and those blue eyes!

Soundgarden was fantastic. Of course, since Sandra Bernhard’s bit as Liza Minelli covering Black Hole Sun that’s the only way I hear it.

    • Gerry Fisher

A ptown drag queen named Musty Chiffon (formerly with the band Human Sexual Response) also did a great cover of “Black Hole Sun”

    • E.J.

They did an interesting version of Rusty Cage, though the vidio is a bit hard to watch

  • Todd20036

Damn. He’s all of 2 years older than I. I wonder if it was a cardiac event.

      • JCF

Really sad. 20+ years after Cobain?

  • ChrisInKansas

Weren’t there strong rumors of him being gay and married his manager to try and cover them up? In any case, very sad. They weren’t really my style of music but I did like Black Hole Sun.

    • Todd20036

Never heard of such, but while being gay in the 90s could have had some consequences, you’d think he’d come out by now if that were true.

        The closet does strange things.

  • KnownDonorDad

One of my favorite rock vocalists…terrible news.

My heart goes out for his family and friends.

  • As someone who got to know Chris and his former wife…I am saddened by this news…rest easy Chris…

NO SHIT??? I just saw him in concert here in Tucson too! Wow, R.I.P, Chris.

  • Jacob

    God I loved him!

Another fine talent taken away too soon.

Never heard of him until I chaperoned some nephews to the 2nd Lollapalooza in Dallas. I saw this tiny, beautiful, bare chested Adonis with dark Bernadette Peters hair walk up a small stage and drink regurgitated beer. Their music and the rest of the show has been clouded from memory, distorted from reality by the ingestion of acid at the insistence of my cousin’s influential teenage boys. One of those boys called me from Egypt this morning, phoning to tell me of this sad news. He was playing Soundgarden for his English class and reminiscing while they took a test.
Jesus, coming up to him, stretching his arms out and saying, “More like this”.

  • Robert Anthony

    Sad news.

  • fuzzybits

This hit hard when I heard it this morning. RIP beautiful man.

  • fuzzybits

Chris was supposed to be at Rock On The Range,a big rock concert here in Columbus this weekend.

  • RJ Tremor

Just copied some Soundgarden to my jump drive last night to listen to in the car, now I gotta dig out my Audioslave CDs and copy those to it too. Old favorite of mine I’ll link later, Shadow on the Sun. “Every drop of flame lights a candle in the memory of the one who lived inside my skin.” A lyric that always felt so profound to me.

  • HZ81

Gorgeous with a heavenly voice. Rock & roll is literally dying on us.

    RIP. Chris.

Soundgarden is one of the few bands I regret never seeing in concert. Guess I’ll live with that regret the rest of my life now.

  • FAEN

Confirmed that it is suicide. Tragic.
