Will & Grace Cast Go Musical In Revival Trailer [VIDEO]

Variety reports:

In anticipation of NBC’s “Will & Grace” revival this fall, Will, Grace, Jack and Karen have reunited in the first official trailer for the special event series. The five-minute-long trailer begins as the titular characters exit the office of Bob Greenblatt, the president of NBC Entertainment. The limited 12-episode run brings back cast members Eric McCormack, Debra Messing, Sean Hayes, and Megan Mullally with original series creators Max Mutchnick and David Kohan, who will serve as showrunners and executive producers. James Burrows, who directed the entire eight-season run of the original series, is back as director and executive producer on the revival. Universal Television is producing.

I don’t want to take other people’s enjoyment of this away, but wow am I shocked that so many remember this as a good thing. I was embarrassed every week to have people think this was what being gay was like, and later when it became the Grace Needs A Baby Show With Guest Stars, it was just terrible. Well, maybe they’ll treat Will like an actual person now.

    • Tulle Christensen

Yes the show seemed to be what a gay person would think a straight person would think what gay people are like

      Did that make sense?

    • Capritaur

It was a good thing. We have the luxury now of demanding the unconditional acceptance of the totality of our queerness and all of its non-cis, non-heteronormative trappings, but back then just some safe stereotypes and subdued sexuality was perhaps exactly what was needed to introduce gay people to the general public as human beings that could be empathized with. It may not have been revolutionary, but it was enough to effect a change of mind.

  • bkmn

    Needs more male nudity.

    • another_steve

The gay men in the original series were asexual.

That probably explains why the series was so successful.

  • HeyYouKidsGetOffMyLawn

It was fun. It was mindless fun, and we could use a bit of that right now.

A limited run is perfect. And maybe NBC and other networks can start doing British style programming, where we don’t have to make networks play 22 episodes of a show every year…..maybe 10 here and 8 there when there’s something to say. It’s already starting with Netflix, etc. obviously, but still waaaay too many shows are cranking episodes out like sausages.

  • That_Looks_Delicious

Series ending now has become like characters dying in soap operas. They end up coming back over and over and over again as the amnesiac who was really lost on a desert island or the evil twin or whatever. Or like some kind of annual Cher farewell tour.

    • safari

I saw that in 2003. Is it still going on?

    • Lazycrockett

Well the show ended with a time jump and everyone was old, so this mini season can fit into the show’s timeline.

O/T but wanted to highlight a brave young man who is fighting for LGBT student rights in Buffalo.
While the city’s mayor might be Democratic, our congressman, many members of the school board (including Carl Paladino), and other politicians are basically folks from Alabama without the Southern accent.

  • another_steve

Give Will a penis. Let him use it.

    Not everyday, but occasionally.

  • Joe in PA

Ok, don’t threaten to take away my gay card, but was that an actual show tune music with W&G lines? Sondheim? Or just styled like one?

    • Keiffer
      • Joe in PA

Thank you! Beautiful. And maybe take away one notch on the gay card. 🙂

        • Keiffer

I can think of several ways to help you earn it back! 🙂

        • Ernest Endevor

Allusions to ALW musicals don’t count.

          • olandp

Not knowing the difference between ALW and Sondheim deserves a severe penalty.

          • Joe in PA

            go ooooon.

          • Ernest Endevor

            Late or Early Sondheim?

        • Amanda B. Rekendwith

          Another version for you…

          • Joe in PA

Thanks, beautiful. Ya know when Youtube finishes playing a video…all the related content displays. This was one. I had no idea how man people sang this song.

      • Mark Ross

Glenn is back on Broadway doing this role and she still has it. She was amazing. Just saw it recently.

    • Cuberly
      • barrixines

I’m obviously also lined up for having a few gay points deducted. I do not get Patti Lupone at all.

        • Cuberly

lol…she’s not perfect. I only like certain songs she does. Her stylistic flourishes actually give me a bit of a laugh. If you haven’t heard of Forbidden Broadway they did a great lampoon of her style.

          • barrixines

Thanks for that – it’s pretty spot on. Whenever I see a clip of her I think to myself ,well there was fifty percent more there than there needed to be. I guess she’s like the Merm – it all works in the flesh. Sunset Boulevard is actually the only ALW musical I’ve ever seen. I saw it with Elaine Paige and my opinion of her is on a par with my feelings about Lupone. I guess, though, if your musical is about a batshit old diva over-emoting, Patti or Elaine are your girls. Paige is so tiny – all I remember of that show is her repeatedly running up and down the stairs squawking. It was like watching a budgerigar in a turban.

          • Cuberly

Ha! Interesting review of SB, I needed a good chuckle.

Yeah Patti is her own creation with bits of Merm around the edges. I feel the same about Sondheim. I saw a production of Assassins and thought that had to have been the most misguided self-indulgent plotless crap I’d ever seen….of course my friends where gushing how edgy and Sondheimesque it was. I had to break the news to them that it’s ok to dislike a Sondheim show.

      • StudioTodd

No one does it better than Carol!

      • Reality.Bites
        • CharlestonDave

Thanks for sharing this–Chris Colfer’s version always reminds me of being the gay theater kid in high school.

      • Anastasia Beaverhousen

Patti has a pool in her backyard she tells everyone that ALW paid for when she sued him over Sunset Blvd. saw her in War Paint this season, she’s over the top as usual, but the show was boring as watching someone apply makeup.

        • Cuberly

ALW did treat her like shit. I hope it’s an Olympic size pool.

    • Anastasia Beaverhousen

Oh, honey.. you march yourself right now to Times Square and get a ticket to see that lady that kill rabbits and puppies in Andy’s “Sunset Blvd.” revival. It has a big orchestra~!

  • KaBoomBOX

I’m glad the show is coming back, just wish it was a Netflix revival. I have fantasies of Karen Walker without a filter.

    • Lazycrockett

Season one Karen was the best Karen.

      • Mrs. Councillor Nugent

“Why I’m exercising right now, only you can’t see where!”

Oh, honey, and she has fantasies about you too.

Cant wait. They all look good, even the Canadian

  • Achilles Tsakiridis

Yeah … chances are its gonna not be funny. Makes me think of MY BIG FAT GREEK WEDDING 2. Lets milk this puppy for last last drop . But them teets be dry .

  • Capritaur

In 2017 Will would be a bearded otter daddy and Jack would be wearing a cardigan.

  • Roger

LOVED IT! A fabulous and insanely gay trailer to the most funny and gay show ever. Can´t wait for the new episodes.

Wreak havoc over the entire country, as the GOP tirelessly works for those tax cuts for the 1%.

    • jimbo65

I thought they were being careful not to give him too much classified info. God if the do nothings at the GOP can’t see how messed up this is, then we are truly fucked.

  • Kevin
  • Ernest Endevor

Well, as a superficial judgmental sneering Brit I don’t approve of anything but I thought that was adorable. Very talented cast. And nice to see people doing a musical number who can actually, you know, do musicals (mostly). Funny use of the dread anthem from Sunset, too.

OT: this cracked me up today, had to stop car in rural work rollings https://uploads.disquscdn.com/images/43add32bf2d5179b550b6dad8749ee66ca5f5a0e919862a63a846fd6cf083ed2.jpg

  • barrixines

Completely OT – Just come back from seeing Alien: Covenant and wanted to say ignore the fanboys already whining everywhere about how this film facehugger-raped their childhood. It was very, very entertaining and not afraid to throw in a few bonkers notes of homoeroticism.

    • where did you see it? I have to wait till fri! ugh! I cannot wait…
was it good? as good as the first or second?
      dish, man, dish!

      • barrixines

Am in Spain – it was released here three days ago. Obviously its not quite up there with Alien and Aliens but for me its definitely third best. It’s a good blend of the first two and Prometheus. As you’d expect, it’s absolutely gorgeous to look at, it dials back on some of the metaphysical stuff that didn’t quite work in the last film, and gives you plenty of viscera instead. The new creature designs are mostly great but really it’s David’s film. Fassbender is mesmerising.

        • thanks for the insight. definitely looking more forward now to it.
          Cheers 🙂

          • barrixines

I am a huuuuge fan of the series. I know that Prometheus was a bit half arsed but it was really dispiriting to come back and read online people encouraging others not to bother going to see this one. I’ve just read the review on the Roger Ebert site and it’s an absolute rave.

    • Lars Littlefield

Good to know. I detest the divas who insist upon the purity of their Star Trek, Star Wars, and Alien franchise products. It they were so on spot about such things they would be making the films. But they’re not. I wonder why?

      • barrixines

I came home quite excited about it and started looking a few forums and the responses of those who have seen it are so balls-achingly Comic Guy stereotypical. It’s a good solid blockbuster with moments here and there verging dangerously on art. I would have thought it was everything the fanboys wanted Prometheus to be but wasn’t.

      • Jean-Marc in Canada

Yup, purity tests of any kind always lead to distortions of truth and usually end badly. I could expand on my comment but I suspect most here get where I’m going….

  • Sam_Handwich
  • AJA

Can’t wait! The main cast really has aged well, even in HD they don’t look more than a few years older.

  • Hank

All I can say, is that I REALLY DO Hope, that they can pull it off!!!
Having a Gay themed show on a Major TV station, can help push MORE of our GLBT Rights forward!!! ENDA, TransRights, Full Blown Civil Rights!!!

    • Lars Littlefield

I’d rather see the Will and Grace cast come back than watch an adult play a teen suffering the angst of coming out in a catholic family.

  • Kevin
  • Anastasia Beaverhousen

Oh, Grace, that dress.. I have no words. After 10 years you couldn’t have stole something from that weird Broadway show you were in, “Smash?”

  • SnowFlake

    I can’t wait!!!

  • Dazzer

    It’s still fucking geo-blocked

  • cayliffe

Why am I crying. Once I heard the theme song, that was it. They look amazing. I need this show come back to preserve my sanity. So excited.

  • Henry Auvil

I missed out on this whole thing cuz I don’t watch teevee. But I hope it’s good.

  • motordog

OT: (Well, least it’s still in the topic of ‘entertainment’) Has anyone been watching the show “American Gods”? On the last episode, they had probably the hottest gay sex scene I’ve ever seen outside of an actual porn movie (and way better than a lot of porn, tbh). The scene involves an Omani trinket salesman meeting a cabdriver who turns out to be a mythical Djinn….amazingly hot sex ensues, but it’s also quite romantic and passionate. I see from IMDB that both characters are going to appear in future episodes, so (having not read the source material) I’m hoping they have at least some happiness in their future…though sex with gods has been shown to not be too good to mortals in this show (I’m looking at you, Bilquis).

  • sandollar_man

One of my favorite episodes is when they all go to Karen’s cabin. Jack and Karen play strip poker then Karen see’s “The Yetti”.

    • Mine was the episode where Karen was put on a monthly clothing budget which was “bigger than the gross nation product of some Central American nations”. Grace invited her to go shopping at a mall clothing store in Bergen County, New Jersey at a store where rack designer clothes were being sold “with labels cut out” at real discounts. Karen’s line “Honey, do you know how many things are wrong with that one sentence?” is priceless.

    Is Travelers continuing on Netflix?

  • And who plays the Adonis that Jack is showing the apartment to?

  • CharlestonDave

Hope the show is funnier than that trailer. #NotOptimistic

  • SilasMarner

    I can’t wait!!!

  • James

Oh god no. It was great for its time, but it needs to stay there.
