New Fears Over North Korea’s Latest Missile, Regime Claims New Rocket Can Carry Large Nuke [VIDEO]

The BBC reports:

North Korea has claimed that the missile it tested on Sunday was a new type of rocket capable of carrying a large nuclear warhead. The missile, launched at a steep angle, reached an altitude of 2,000km (1,242 miles) and traveled about 700km, landing in the sea west of Japan.

North Korea said on Monday it was a test of the abilities of a “newly developed ballistic rocket”. South Korea’s military said it could not yet verify the North’s claims.

But it said the North’s missiles did appear to be able to leave and re-enter the atmosphere, which is crucial to developing intercontinental ballistic missiles (ICBMs), the Yonhap news agency reported.

Russian President Vladimir Putin said Monday that North Korea’s latest missile test was “dangerous”, but warned that Pyongyang was being intimidated and called for a peaceful solution to regional tensions.

“We are categorically against the expansion of the club of nuclear powers,” Mr Putin told reporters after an international forum in Beijing, adding however that “we must stop intimidating North Korea”.

Russia has disputed US claims that the missile launched on the weekend landed dangerously close to the Russian city of Vladivostok. The United States said on Sunday that the North Korean medium range missile crashed into the sea just 60 miles off Russia’s Pacific coast line.

But Russia’s ministry of defence said its early warning systems had tracked a missile that landed more than 300 miles from the coast and never posed any threat to Russian territory on its 23 minute flight.
