Bookmakers Spike Impeachment Odds To 60%

The Independent reports:

Donald Trump’s firing of FBI director James Comey has seen the odds on his impeachment slashed to their shortest ever price. Bookmaker Paddy Power said its odds reflected a 60 per cent chance of the billionaire being impeached during his first term in office.

Mr Comey’s sacking reverberated around Washington on Tuesday night and throughout Wednesday. He had been leading the investigation into alleged Russian meddling in the presidential election and claims of ties between Mr Trump’s associates and the Kremlin.

A Paddy Power spokesman said: “In the past 24 hours alone we’ve seen money for Trump to be impeached in his first term, resulting in us cutting the odds from 10/11 into 4/6. “We can attribute this to the news of Comey’s sacking. [That] is the shortest we’ve been for Trump to be impeached in his first term.”

  • Judas Peckerwood

As much as he deserves it, the thought of President Pence makes me hope it doesn’t happen. I’d much rather have an incompetent fascist in office than a competent one.

    • Mark Née Fuzz

      Trump first. Then Pence.

      • MBear

        President Ryan! Woo!

        • Rebecca Gardner

Ryan and McConnell are going to prison too.
          President Hatch! Woo!

We are so fucked no matter the outcome. Our country needs a reset button.

          • Oh boy! then I think Scty of State Rex Tillerson is next in Line after the Speaker and the President Pro Tem of the Senate (Orin Hatch?) We can’t win here!

          • Rebecca Gardner

You are correct. SOS would be next after Hatch. Like I said, no matter what happens, we are FUCKED!!!

          • Uncle Mark

I feel your rage, but let’s not start embracing futility yet. Even if the other GOP criminals are not indicted. The stench of this whole affair will cling to them and their party. It will be a cudgel that can be used on them in future elections…and maybe under a Democratically-dominated gov’t some efforts could be made to make examples of those, who escaped justice earlier.

          • That_Looks_Delicious

It’s going to be Hatch. Everybody above Hatch has been compromised by the Russians, according to some people with sources on the twitterverse.

          • Uncle Mark

Given Tillersons link to the Russians, I wouldn’t be surprised if he was tossed out too…especially if Drumpf is tossed out for colluding with the Russians (amid the other myriad of impeachable offenses that seem to be piling up for Cheeto.)

          • FAEN

I have a different perspective-the damage done to the GOP after Cheeto gets impeached will be colossal IMHO. They will be on the defensive and hopefully the Dems will constantly attack putting them in a better position to take the House and/or Senate in the midterms of the WH depending on when the impeachment happens.

      • Oh goodies. Then we get President Paul Ryan as Speaker who is next in line, a sneaky asshat with half a brain and pretty blue eyes. I am gonna barf.

        • pch1013

That only happens if Trump and Pence resign, or are removed, simultaneously.

    • bkmn

Pence and Sessions have both been aiding him in his coverup, so if Trump goes down they should too.

      • That_Looks_Delicious

Some observers have said that if this whole thing blows up, we’re going to have a President Orrin Hatch, because that’s how far down the list you have to go to find someone not tainted by Russian mob money.

        • bkmn

Mildly better than Ryan, but not by much.

    • TexasBoy

I just wish Mr. Incompetent didn’t have his hand on the nuclear launch buttons.

    • Capritaur

Best case scenario would be that Pence is implicated, impeached, and removed as well, which is my bet in the office pool.

It’s unlikely that Pence was not part of the cover-up, given how blatant the White House has been about it. But just in case Pence was actually innocent, I’d prefer to lose some progressive gains in the short-term than to risk losing democracy forever.

      • Judas Peckerwood

Then, of course, we’d have President Paul Ryan — an even more competent fascist.

        • lymis

I don’t think it works that way.

          • Judas Peckerwood

            Civics 101

          • mark99k

….which, it would appear from thousands of social media posts, is no longer taught (or taught well) in public schools. It astounds me how many people think voters can impeach directly, or think that impeachment equals removal, or don’t know that impeachment charges must be brought by the House of Representatives.

          • Judas Peckerwood

I feel your pain. We live in a country where more people can name everyone in the extended Kardashian family than can name the three branches of government.

          • pch1013

It depends whether T and P are removed in the same instant. If so, then Ryan becomes Prez. If not, then the Presidency goes to whomever is VP at the moment when the current President is removed.

          • Yeah but the Senate can confirm a new VP — and they would quickly like they would with Rockefeller when Ford became President. If the Republicans still controlled the Senate– but probably would do whatever Pence asked as long as his VP was tolerable. I don’t think the postion would stay open

          • pch1013

Yes, and there’s no guarantee that person would be Paul Ryan.

          • I think Pence would ask Ryan first, they are close friends and Ryan doesn’t want to be Speaker forever. I bet– plus Pence/ Ryan even though they are both from the Midwest would be a good ticket with Ryan being a Catholic. Who knows? we are jumping ahead anyway.

          • pch1013

Indeed. Besides, I think Ryan enjoys being Speaker – he has much more power to pursue his murderous agenda than he would as VP.

          • You think he enjoys it with the “freedom coalition” on his butt all the time? He might actually. I think he had to be talked into taking the job actually — they drove Boehner into the ground. But Ryan seems to be good at managing them by moving right. I hate Ryan btw — he is murderous.

      • TampaDink

He’s likely to be implicated with Hair Furor, if for no other reason that failure to do any real vetting of Flynn….and since pence was in charge of the transition team, he should be held responsible. Back when it was announced that he’d oversee the transition team while still running out the clock on his term as governor, I expected disaster.

        • Judas Peckerwood

Unless I’m mistaken, he could only be impeached for a crime committed after he became VP.

          • TampaDink

Good point, if incompetency were an impeachable crime, Dubya wouldn’t have lasted two terms. Perhaps pence is guilty of some other criminal activities, committed after he was sworn in.

          • JWC

The claim that Flynn was fired because he lied to Pence is in error Yates made Trump Pence etall aware of Flynn and yet they allowed him full run for 18 daysAnything there?

          • TampaDink

Gasp! You don’t mean to imply that pence has told a lie? How could such a perfect xtian ever do such a thing?

          • JWC

Pence lied about being lied to

          • TampaDink

I wonder if Mother pence, (yes, he calls his wife “mother”) has punished him for lying.

          • JWC

If she has a brain she figured it out herself. Oh wait Republican wives don’t have brains

          • TampaDink

Especially republican wives who subscribe to fundamentalist cults.

          • JWC

            is Mother Pence a cultist?

          • Dana Chilton

Crimes committed for which he can still be held accountable. It wouldn’t have to be while in office

          • TampaDink

            Excellent.

          • penpal

The crime committed can and should be whatever Democrats scream to the media about. That’s how Republicans do it, if we’re ever interested in taking a page out of their playbook.

          • Judas Peckerwood

I hear what you’re saying, but:

            1) The grounds for impeachment are spelled out in the Constitution, so we’re limited by that.

            2) The House of Representatives, which would carry out the impeachment, is controlled by the GOP.

        • Jeffrey

The whole chain of command is dismal, though

          • TampaDink

Yes indeed….and I do not think that is just a coincidence. Hair furor’s handlers instructed him to surround himself with people far less capable and less likable…..in their thick Russian accents.

          • Xiao Ai: The Social Gadfly

Two pronged attack; Trump’s administration and midterms. Stay strong.

        • UrsusArctos

The AG office did send letters to Pence about Flynn back in December. He’s complicit.

          • TampaDink

But he said he’d never heard anything about Flynn until that day when he finally did….and then they waited 2 weeks to do anything about it. I guess he was in a state of shock from being lied to.

          • UrsusArctos

This is such an “Exceptional” Administration.

          • TampaDink

It is, with no exceptions, completely unpresidented.

        • Bob Conti

Just a thought: Hair Furor gets impeached and convicted, Pence ascends to POTUS, BUT… at least one Congressional chamber goes Democrat in 2018 thus potentially cock-blocking Pence from pushing through regressive legislation. Admittedly, that does nothing from the shit show that could be created within the Executive Branch, so I’m not seeing the rainbow-farting unicorns coming out to play in this scenario, but it may be the best we can get until 2020.

          • TampaDink

As the goddess, Judy Tenuta says, “it could happen.”
            Something’s gotta give.

        • His HolyShit, the Donald

Unfortunately, orange baboon seems to ALWAYS know how to bet against the house to come out intact. Just like the 2016 election.

          • TampaDink

I hope he is braced for a crippling wake up call as the investigations continue & lead to a spectacular end of his life in politics.

      • Skokieguy [Larry]

If impeachment becomes a real possibility (with our current Congress?) Trump will no doubt resign and blame a health crisis or “I’m too awesome, you don’t deserve me”. He will then pardon Pence and everyone else in a backroom deal to avoid proceeding with impeachment. Also, his kids will pressure him, to avoid a conviction and the loss of family wealth, and /or them facing charges as well.

        • TampaDink

How could the healthiest person ever to preside possibly resign over a health crisis?

          • pch1013

Consistency isn’t exactly his strong suit.

He could also just blame the loser sad failing etc. media for being so mean to him.

          • TampaDink

But he is the king of media…just ask him.

          • Skokieguy [Larry]

Well it would be a huge crisis, bigger than anyone else has every had. So there’s that.

          • TampaDink

Such a huge crisis would require the most incredible chocolate cake anyone has ever eaten.

          • Todd Allis

Those bone spurs acting up again!

          • TampaDink

I’m sure that his gastroenterologist, Dr. Feelgood Bornstein has a treatment plan, as bone spurs occur so often in his field of expertise.

        • MonochromeMouse

There needs to be some way for congress to not allow a resignation and force impeachment if sufficient charges are found so that trump, or any future illegitimate president, can’t get off with all lifetime benefits former presidents receive. And no taxpayer funded secret service security, we all shouldn’t be on the hook for a traitor’s protection.

          • Skokieguy [Larry]

Congress could refuse to accept his resignation? But with this blood-red Congress, don’t see that happening.

      • Nax

There’s no happy ending to any of this.

      • JT

Then it would be Paul Ryan. Ayn Rand in drag. They’ve got a deep and disgraceful bench.

        • Capritaur

Ayn Rand, the original Russian propaganda attack on the US.

      • Dana Chilton

In that scenario, Paul Ryan becomes president.

    • Ragnar Lothbrok

I want it to happen. We get rid of him, Jared, Ivanka, that Breitbart smell, KellyANN and the gang too……

    • Stephen Elliot Phillips

If trump goes down pence will be so crippled politically he will be impotent
      (I hope)

      • pch1013

Yes, and Pence does not have an adoring fanbase comprised of tens of millions of drooling cultists.

    • Xiao Ai: The Social Gadfly

Pence will go down too. If nothing else mark him up as a casualty of war.

    • Michael

If Trump is impeached, which will necessitate Republican support, he will sing like a canary and take them all down with him.

    • Nowhereman

I’m wondering how far down the succession list we’ll have to go before we find one that is not involved in the crime or the cover up. It’d be nice if it takes out Putin, too. I for one am really sick of the smell of borscht and vodka in the higher levels of our government. The Russian who met with Trump in the Oval Office was especially vulgar and rude to the journalists. They don’t like the free press at all.

    • JCF

Yeah, but I’d rather not have someone DEMENTED w/ their finger on the button. Talibangelical, we can survive…

Never underestimate our side’s ability to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory.

    • Depends on whether we still have an election then.

Depends on how much the Republicans suppress the vote.

Depend on to what degree Russia hacks our electorate and/or our election systems again.

Depends on whether the Democrats grow a spine between now and then.

      • pch1013

Depends on whether the purity-test crowd continues in their attempts to split the Democratic Party and thus ensure the continuance of fascist rule.

        • UrsusArctos

Amen. If I can hold my nose and vote HRC, anyone can.

      • Ragnar Lothbrok

Hopefully we stop arguing about Bernie / Hillary / Jill by then

Ok, Jill should be mocked everyday, forever.

          • UrsusArctos

She’ll have to console herself with another dinner in St Petersburg. It’s a shame her plus one (Flynn) may be in Leavenworth or had a cuppa polonium tea by then.

      • bkmn

That’s a lot of depends and there may not be that many depends because Trump really goes through them.

The law firm that sent the letter regarding Trump’s business interests in Russia was recognized as “Russia Law Firm of the Year” in 2016. Let that simmer for just a moment.

  • I’m deeply pessimistic at this point. Very nearly the entire Republican party has become complicit in Russia’s coup. Even in the face of a guaranteed Republican replacement for President even if both Trump and Pence go down, they still refuse to even consider their leader committed multiple “high crimes and misdemeanors” (impeachment) or that he’s literally unfit and unable to exercise the duties, powers, and responsibilities of his office (25th Amendment).

    • Mike C

I have absolutely zero faith that anything of significance will happen to Trump before 2018, and I’m sure we’ll find a way to screw that opportunity up anyway. But I’ve been wrong before….

It’s because they’re ALL dirty. You can’t just get rid of Trump and friends without Congressional Rs getting caught up in it. Mitch McConnell’s wife is in Trump’s cabinet ffs. And who knows what kind of under the table deals Ryan and others have made with Trump and his people.

I blocked that one awhile back. Life’s too short.

          • Nic Peterson

He blocked me and yet still responds. He is a sad little thing, gets twisted easily and seems to be filled with fear and self loathing. Someone needs to throw a life line. The memory of my long dead fairy godmother, patron saint of lost causes demands it.

        • “You’re incompatible in this room yet you stick around”

So now you know how we feel about incompatible immigrants. The people who are coming now aren’t the people who aspired freedom and looked up to western values. This new wave of immigrants have no interest in integrating with Western Culture. Their interest is the Islamisation of the West.

          • Nic Peterson

I was so torn up when you blocked me, so your response brings a wry smile to my face. My smile faded as I read your response, realizing that we are not lucky enough to be experiencing one of your two broken clock moments. Keep trying though.

Our shared American experience seems to be what you value the most yet you don’t have enough faith in it to think that it can withstand a few more ingredients in the melting pot. What a fearful place you live in and that’s something I can’t understand. Because if you share any commonality with the greater group on this site you should understand that you have more to fear from white Christians than any other group.

Would you really rather have Pence than Trump? Which of the 2 is more electable in 4 years?

  • dogdadny

Impeachment is not the solution. 🍊 Is guilty of colluding with the Russians and all those around him, if not as guilty, are stained by association and should be removed from their positions. A new election should be held.

    • It would be nice, and immently proper, but we are not going to get it. The constitution does not offer a mechanism for a new election. Perhaps if SCOTUS ordered one, we might, but SCOTUS is not going to do this, and we are not getting a constitutional amendment allowing for one before 2020 — even if the votes in Congress and the state houses were there. I am just being realistic.

      • Chucktech

SCOTUS can’t order anything. SCOTUS adjudicates laws.

        • Yeah and SCOTUS simply can’t order Texas to hold a new election for President for example. Their state legislature can say “nope, we like the one we held”. You are exactly right. I guess the U.S. Army could be ordered to come in and open the polling places — but that would probably be what it would take — something on the order of integration of the University of Arkansas in the 1950’s on a factor of 100 times more difficult.

          • Chucktech

            Damned ol’ Constitution…

          • TampaDink

            a.k.a. Republican toilet paper.

        • Stogiebear

SCOTUS appointed Bush 2 to office and there is nothing in the Constitution that gives them that power. If someone wrote the right lawsuit they damn well could declare the last general election void and then say their decision would carry no precedent on future elections…

      • dogdadny

        I agree.

  • Mark Née Fuzz

At this point I’d almost favor a military coup. Anything to scrub that shit stain from the Oval Office.

    • I think the military would pretty much disregard a Trump “order” to first-strike North Korea with unconventional weapons right now (tactical nukes) — as one example. They would simply ignore it. Call it a coup, call it what you want, call it treason but I do not think they would do it. They would insist on a declaration of war, or more level heads (McCain et al) getting involved. . I bet discussions have been underway to this effect.

      • pch1013

Trouble is, most of the rank and file are pro-Trump.

      • Ben in Oakland

You’re setting the bar pretty low when you call McCain level headed. Flat headed, absolutely. Perhaps sloping foreheaded.

      • Miji

I would be very curious to know if any protocols were secretly changed in regard to the nuclear codes, confirmation of them, etc. between Nov 9 and Jan 20.

        • Tunamelt

You might want to listed to the Radiolab podcast from a few weeks ago entitled “Nukes” where they look at the protocols that prevent the president from calling for a nuclear attack. (spoiler alert: there really aren’t any)

“President Richard Nixon once boasted that at any moment he could pick up a telephone and – in 20 minutes – kill 60 million people. Such is the power of the US President over the nation’s nuclear arsenal. But what if you were the military officer on the receiving end of that phone call? Could you refuse the order?

This episode, we profile one Air Force Major who asked that question back in the 1970s and learn how the very act of asking it was so dangerous it derailed his career. We also pick up the question ourselves and pose it to veterans both high and low on the nuclear chain of command. Their responses reveal once and for all whether there are any legal checks and balances between us and a phone call for Armageddon.”

    • m_lp_ql_m

At this point, I’d favor even confining him to a chicken coop.

What are the odds of him continuing to get fatter before our very eyes until he explodes?

  • m_lp_ql_m

Impeachment, nope. Resignation, nope. Heart attack or stroke, fingers crossed.

    I know, I know, that’s rude.

    • Judas Peckerwood

Confession: I initially read your “nope” as “rope” and didn’t feel nearly as bad for doing it as I should have.

      • McSwagg

You are “knot” wrong in that sentiment. Heaven “noose” many of us thought the same.

I’m pretty sadistic when it comes to him. My fantasy is some illness incapacitates him and makes him terminal, but they impeach him and remove him from office while he’s ailing. His last thoughts are the knowledge that his presidency has failed. Like Roy Cohn.

      That’s too kind!

  • HZ81

Buckle up, everyone. Unless he does the right thing and resigns (ha) we’re going to have him for months and months more. I heard recently on the radio Bill and Monica Lewinsky took a year to finish and Watergate wasn’t wrapped up quickly. He may nuke the world first, but…

I am just going to be “incapacitated” naturally until he is gone. Then, celebrate by naturally incapacitating myself!

    • pch1013

“Bill and Monica Lewinsky took a year to finish”

I’m pretty sure they weren’t at it for *that* long. Unless ol’ Bill is a Tantra master.

Bob Barr (Bob Barr!) was on teh teevee THIS MORNING saying that people using the word “impeachment” were all out of control and shit.

Can we roll our eyes NOW?!?!?

      • HZ81

Yeah, it’s crazy to think colluding with a foreign power to swing an election could or should lead to impeachment.

        Eyes are rolling.

Are you sure about that, I would be worried about a prion disease similar to BSE.

  • 2guysnamedjoe

    . . .

  • Michael

You realize this was the plan all along, right? Pence will be in power soon and the entire anti-gay cabinet will be ready to go.

    • m_lp_ql_m

Chechnya was just a practice run to see how the rest of the world would respond to a gay pogrom.

    • Tiger Quinn

You won’t have to worry about that. There are 25 sealed indictments right now ready to come down. There will be no Pence, nor Ryan either. We’ll have Hatch in 2018 as a caretaker. Don’t believe me? You’ll see.

      • billbear1961

        Hope you’re right!

Although Hatch is a mental case, too!

    • KnownDonorDad

I’ll say one thing about Pence: he won’t have Trump’s reality-star teflon. He’ll actually be judged as a politician. He’ll still have to be watched carefully and opposed at every turn, but there’s less outrageous stuff that he’ll be able to get away with, any more than any other candidate could have pulled what Trump did during the primaries without being knocked out.

      • kareemachan

He’s liked a LOT less than drumpster, if you can believe that.

        • KnownDonorDad

I can believe it. The same people who dislike Trump dislike him, and he doesn’t hold sway over internet troll types who are part of the Trump cult of personality. He’s also disliked in Indiana. It’s down to the religious right, a few friends in Congress, and party dead-enders.

          • pj

  • jm2

    what about odds for resignation?

  • i don’t really understand the mechanics of betting, but i will say this one thing. i wonder how international folks understand, if at all, the american political landscape right now.

i guess my point would be that lots of other countries still have the rule of law, and even more still think the US still does. so i’m not sure about these odds. there is going to have to be the Perfect Storm of documents, “tapes,” and videos all delivered at the right place at the right time in the right media environment, for impeachment to become a truly real thing. oh, how i want that to happen!

but i know when a string of “if…”s is too long to put 60/40 odds on something. this is still one of those.

  • MichaelJ

Like a spoiled privileged child who grabs the ball and announces that the game is over when it becomes clear he’s going to loose, Trump will resign before he is impeached. He will whine about how unfairly he was treated by everybody, and that he and his family will not be abused in this way. He will never admit defeat, and he’ll claim the country will never be great again without him being the leader and blame others for not wanting the country to be great again.

    • jimbo65

And will continue to hold rallies. Bet on it.

      • MichaelJ

I hadn’t thought about that, but now that I am, I would surely bet that you got that right. He will need to fuel his ego, and he smart enough to know there are enough people to populate his rallies —
people who have no respect for themselves and want a fascist leader, and people he will be able to make money off of. Like a drug user who builds up tolerance, merely fleecing workers, contractors and investors will not longer provide enough ego fuel.

    • KnownDonorDad

If it comes to that, yeah, he’ll pull a Nixon with extra Trumpian hubris.

Impeachment and conviction? That’s a heavy lift, historically. I’ll pay attention when there’s an actual impeachment vote scheduled. In the meantime, people need to get motivated for the midterms.

Yes. Narcissistic Green Partiers and Bernie or Busters were too busy virtue signaling and undermining Hillary. They foolishly took their eye off the ball. They own this as much as the Trumpanzees.
