Connecticut Set To Become Seventh State To Ban Ex-Gay Torture Following Unanimous State Senate Vote

Via press release from Connecticut Equality:

The Connecticut Senate voted unanimously today to pass HB 6695, AAC The Protection of Youth from Conversion Therapy 36-0, with bipartisan support. Sponsored by Senator Beth Bye and Representative Jeff Currey, the bill has 100 co-sponsors and was approved in the House by an overwhelming margin last week.

“We are delighted with today’s vote, and grateful that the Senate, with strong support on both sides of the aisle, moved so quickly to protect Connecticut youth from the devastating consequences of so-called conversion therapy,” said Jennifer L. Levi, Transgender Rights Project Director for GLBTQ Legal Advocates & Defenders (GLAD). “This legislation will make Connecticut a safer and more welcoming place for LGBTQ youth.”

State and national medical, mental health, and child welfare organizations all oppose the practice of conversion therapy, a practice which seeks to change a person’s sexual orientation or gender identity. Extensive professional literature shows the practice to be both ineffective in changing sexual orientation or gender identity and harmful to youth. Young people who have been subjected to conversion therapy are at increased risk of depression, suicidal thoughts and suicide attempts, and illegal drug use.

Under the bill’s provisions, any licensed health professional who practices conversion therapy would be subject to discipline by the Department of Public Health up to and including the loss of their professional license.

Upon the governor’s promised signature, Connecticut will join California, Illinois, New Jersey, New Mexico, Oregon, Vermont and Washington DC in banning ex-torture. Dozens of cities across the nation have also instituted local bans.

UPDATE: Done and DONE!

How long will that last tho

    • David Walker

It’s OK to be at least kinda sorta optimistic about good news, especially when a bill gets 100% support. Challenges in court? No doubt, but I think no one’s been successful with a challenge yet. So, yes…there is cause for caution, but there’s also even greater cause for celebration.

  • djcoastermark

    36 -0, unanimous, thats great news !

  • JoeMyGod

AND….the governor just signed the bill!

    • kcken

Sweet. Shitty that we still have to fight this though. We can get married, but may still be fired, denied, beaten, or “converted” all without national legal protections.

      2018 MIDTERMS PEOPLE!!!!

No doubt Bryan (Fissure) and Brian (Brownstain) and Tony (Perkkkins) will be wailing (and fundraising) about this outrage any moment now….

  • AtticusP

It still amazes me that shit like this has to be debated.

Torturing a person for being who they are is right out of the Dark Ages.

    Enough already.

    • kcken

My deeply “christian” friends get pissed off when I say, “We had religious rule in the past. It was called the dark ages for a reason”.

      I don’t give a fuck if I offend anymore.

      • BearEyes

        never apologise for the truth

        • AtticusP

          rAmen, brother! Preach it!!

      • MBear

Always remember: your christian “friends” think there’s nothing wrong with walking around with a book that states quite clearly that you need to be put to death.

        Such horrid people.

      • Nic Peterson

I like reminding my Catholic friends that their Protestant friends think the RCC is the whore of babylon. Similarly, I remind the Protestants that they are apostates. My LDS friends, I simply offer a stiff drink.

4100 religions on this planet being practiced today, how absurd to believe that any single one of them is the truth.

        • Cackalaquiano

I can at least understand the appeal. To just KNOW you’re on the right side, in alignment with THE one most powerful being out there, and member of some elite tribe. Sorta the same reason people join gangs.

  • S1AMER

Good news! And the fact that the vote was unanimous is sweet icing on a delicious celebration cake!

I call that a slam dunk! Good work CT!

And I love CT Gov Dan Malloy. Very inspirational story. He doesn’t write or type, and couldn’t tie his shoes until 5th grade.

Because of his dyslexia and other perceptual and motor-function problems, Mr. Malloy said, his teachers thought he was retarded until he was in the fourth grade.

“I was spastic,” he said. “I had little hand-eye coordination. My eyes moved the wrong way.”

He developed compensatory skills like a capacious memory, he said, but he
still does not write or type and almost never speaks from a prepared text.

“You can’t separate me from my upbringing as a child overcoming learning
disabilities and having to make my way through that,” he said. “My dad wasn’t the governor. I wasn’t born with a gigantic chip on my shoulder. But, there’s this thing that I carry around. Everybody has something they carry around. It’s a miracle that I’m here. That’s why I have a desire to do good for people who it’s more expensive to do good for.”

      What an inspiration!

  • Another bright spot in an other wise bleak day… I’ll take it.

    Bloody lefty state!

  • Jean-Marc in Canada

But wait, won’t anyone think of the faux “therapists” or those “good” Christians?

    Yeah, me neither.

    • liondon#iamnotatraitor

It is all about the money and being able to bill insurance companies for the “therapy”.. it doesn’t stop churches from doing this to their flock.

  • Blake J Butler

Keep in mind people we have to wait on Nevada by the end of this week, Sandoval has been on a LGBT rights roll lately. A procedural vote in the senate, and then it awaits his motion.

And conversion therapy bill there has been voted strongly enough in both the senate and assembly.

  • Hue-Man

O/T Canada’s federal bill against trans discrimination is stalled by Conservatives in the Senate (it applies only to federally-regulated industries while provincial Human Rights Codes govern provincial jurisdiction). This dull procedural story is enlivened by this colorful quote from the bill’s sponsor, Senator Grant Mitchell, who is also Government Whip in the Senate.

“It’s a hill I’m prepared to die on. This has to be passed before the summer break,” he said, later adding that he did not expect to have to use time allocation in order to pass C-16 on time.

  • Randy503

    Eight down, 43 to go!

    • 51?

      • David Walker

        Counting DC, maybe?

  • So I checked and Democrats (and one independent?) have a narrow majority over Republicans in the CT state senate. I wonder what it’s like to live in a state where so many Republicans support gay rights. In TX the Republicans have a contest every two years to see who can big the biggest bigot.

    • That_Looks_Delicious

Lately they’ve been having that contest in Texas every day.

      • Lately? No. It was always like this here. It’s just that a few recent events hit on slow news days.

    • TrollopeReader

and Gov Abbott just rolls with the flow ….

      • netxtown

it is very stressful not to cave to my desire to pop his tires….

  • ceeenbee

Oh!!!!! I see a big boycott from the six hags that call themselves the “million moms”.

  • That_Looks_Delicious

OT – If I worked in a travel-related industry, I’d be looking to supplement my income for the next 4 years.

    • Karl Dubhe

Because they carry in memes that make trump look bad, right?

  • Sam_Handwich
  • TrollopeReader

Would some CT legislators like to go on a road trip to vote this in in some, er Confederate states? We could even borrow some here in MA ….

  • Blake J Butler

And with just 50-50 representation in the senate among Democrats and Republicans with unanimous support, this is a big deal on this issue.

    • Joseph Miceli

A Connecticut Republican is VERY different from a Tex-ass Republitard.

  • DaddyRay

i hope Joe leaves this as the last post of the day – be nice to end the day on a good note

  • MBear

    Why do they hate Jeebus?!?
They’re shitting on every single christian who has ever been born in all of humanity…and all that will ever be born into christ’s pure love and vengeance!

    • DaddyRay

Because they keep telling us God does not make mistakes so it is a sin to try to alter how God created us

      • David Walker

        Unless you’re gay.

        • DaddyRay

I knew I should have read the fine print when I was born

          • MBear

I was only reading latin when I was born

    • David Walker

Even worse, they think they are doing a good and humane thing BY shitting on every single etc. And they’re doing it wearing smiley faces. Government can still do the right thing.

  • SoCalGal20
  • Sam_Handwich

Joe just put up a new post about Flynn subpoena

  • TheManicMechanic

At least some good news to help temper the destruction of democracy going on lately.

  • -M-

“Better news: @GovMalloyOffice just signed the bill into law. Connecticut is the latest state to protect LGBT kids from conversion therapy.”

  • Ninja0980

As others have said, still absurd we have to fight to get this torture outlawed.

    • KnownDonorDad

There are a depressingly large number of absurd fights that we have to engage in these days….

  • j.martindale

In my turbulent youth, I had horrible difficulties dealing with alcohol and drugs. I was a failure of AA for two decades. I attributed that to genes, youth, and stupidity. It is strange that once I came out of the closet, though, and got into a stable, 27 year relation with my husband, I lost my compulsions. I have typically attributed that to just the maturing process. I wonder, though, if it was more than that. I wonder how much damage living in a closet or being forced to live a life you were not designed for can actually do to a person.

    • Ben in Oakland

The closet is about self hatred. Alcohol and drugs– too much and the wrong kind, are a self destructive lifestyle, which is indicative of self hatred,

I think you see where this is going. 😜😘😄😍😇😅😳

    • Ben in Oakland

A short version of something I wrote some years ago, which happened to be on my iPad.

The closet is a lie. its based on lies, promotes lies, glorifies lies. The closet twists, distorts, corrupts, and perverts every single thing it touches. It turns parents against children, straight people against gay people, god against his children, gay individuals against themselves, and morality on its head. It allows homo-hating-homos just the amount of dishonesty and immorality they need to hate themselves more, hate those who don’t live in the closet, and hate the society which fosters the closet.

  • Simonious

    Yay my state!!!!!

  • glass
  • Mike Knife

Thank God for good intelligent people who can see through the fraud and lies of Conversion Therapy. Conversion Therapy is a torture done by anti-gay Christian psychotherapist who harm gay people using physical and psychological torture and psych meds to harm LGBTQ people. I pray for the day Conversion Therapy will be banned around the world. Everyday is a good day when good people put an end to Conversion Therapy.

  • RidingTheLine

It’s both gratifying for a state to come to its senses on that issue and horrifying that we have a Vice President who may have profited personally from the torture of LGBTQ teens in that manner. Kids all across America need this same protection from persecution and cruelty.
