Derelict Trump Casino Sold For 4¢ On The Dollar

The Associated Press reports:

Donald Trump wrote “The Art Of The Deal,” but it was Florida’s Seminole Indians who made a truly amazing deal to buy the opulent casino built by the man who is now president.

The Trump Taj Mahal, the Atlantic City casino that the real estate mogul built for $1.2 billion in 1990, went for 4 cents on the dollar when it was sold in March. Documents filed with the Securities and Exchange Commission on Tuesday revealed the price that billionaire Carl Icahn got from Hard Rock International for the shuttered casino: $50 million. The sale was publicized at the time, though the purchase price wasn’t.

Hard Rock, which is owned by Florida’s Seminole Indian tribe, plans to reopen the Taj Mahal in 2018 after scrubbing it of its minarets and ubiquitous mentions of Trump. Hard Rock says it plans to spend $375 million on a renovation that will draw on the world’s largest collection of music memorabilia. Hotel guests will even be lent Fender electric guitars to play in their rooms.

How moronic do you have to be to go belly-up running a casino – especially one getting massive cash dumps/infusions from the Mob???

  • EweTaw

The Seminoles will need several tons of sage sticks to burn throughout the property just to get rid of the bad boojoo.

And they’ll need barrels of acid to get the orange hand prints off every Ladies Room door!

      • EweTaw

Better they just replace the doors, vintage be damned.

  • Buford

Is it fair to say that Trump ‘built it’..? He actually purchased it after it was already under construction… he finished it, but it it was never his from the get-go.

    • EweTaw

Merv Griffin should have kept it. But in retrospect, Griffin was the first to stick it to Trump who thought he was getting a great deal, the best deal, a tremendous deal for the property and was actually sticking to Griffin. Merv was so cunning to walk away from that property free of any financial attachments. He did much better buying the Beverly Hills Hotel. I miss the Merv.

      • Steverino

Merv was a very savvy businessman. Too bad he was coy about his sexuality, and of course was a conservative Republican, but nobody’s perfect.

      • Snarkaholic

So do I. During random, minor holidays, he had managers handing out gourmet candy and hundred dollar bills to EVERY employee!

        • EweTaw

He bought a small casino near the Utah border in Mesquite, NV. In three years he’d developed it into a stunning hotel/spa/casino that actually acquired a Michelin star. Then he gave it to his kids to run. The place still exists (The Oasis) and it’s like stepping back in time to the early 1970s Las Vegas. Slot machines still accept and pay out in coins. And all rooms look out over an amazingly beautiful golf course that surrounds the property. Mormons even go out of their way to host wedding receptions there. it’s all quite tasteful and well-maintained. Plus, loose slots and strong drinks. Definitely worth stopping at for a meal on the long drive from SLC to Los Angeles and completely by passing Vegas.

      • Buford

Twitler™ gets too much credit as it is… so I got a problem with suggesting that he ‘built’ something that he actually purchased, overspent on, then sold at a loss.

Casino gambling in Atlantic City NJ was an urban experiment that went bad.

The anticipated “revival” of the surrounding city never materialized.

    • bambinoitaliano

The whole revival bs on building casinos is betting on people addiction to gambling just like cracks addiction.

      • another_steve

The Atlantic City boardwalk and beach, fronted on the Atlantic Ocean as they are, are among the most beautiful in the country — yet few visitors spend quality time on them.

For some, casino gambling is, as you suggest, an addiction and an obsession.

        • Snarkaholic

Building the sand dunes (to minimize flooding) has obscured the Boardwalk view of the ocean, so that’s another disadvantage.

      • grada3784

Haven’t been there since I got sober. I only ever went there to drink and cruise.

    • Snarkaholic

The city never had a master plan. I’ve seen an insane amount of money wasted on projects around the city that were soon demolished (a bus station built twice; a lame-ass rocky outcrop/water jets/light show; huge fiberglass figures along the Boardwalk, which were damaged/vandalized, etc.).
To make things worse, we have no bookstore, no movie theater (except an IMAX), and the baseball stadium was closed, so there’s nothing for families to do here.

      • another_steve

A great shame, Snarkaholic. There were high hopes for a revitalization of the city resulting from the casinos.

I’m a beach and ocean community guy myself, having grown up in the residential area surrounding the Coney Island NYC amusement district. For the first 26 years of my life I lived not farther than a 10-minute walk to the boardwalk, beach and ocean. I have a special affinity for similarly-situated communities.

I wish for you and yours, there in Atlantic City, only the best in the years to come.

Clean coal is a thing that has long since come and gone. Used to be that a great deal of coal burned in the US was bituminous, but then the hard anthracite coal of north eastern Pennsylvania made its debut.

But coal, bituminous or anthracite, has had its day in the sun.

The “Phoebe Snow” was a train run by the DL&W line, so called because the engines burnt anthracite, making the experience considerably less dirty and sooty.

I know, I know, it’s a casino, I’m supposed to stay awake gambling anyway.

        • clay

The casino-hotels actually do care about their rooms (if they’re smart). It’s their number of rooms (beds), not their square footage of gambling space, that is the best measure of their market draw. They’re trying to create a captive audience, rather than fight over the t-shirts and fried food crowd on the bored-walk. When the Trump Taj and Plaza (and a couple of the others) stopped re-habbing the rooms and stopped paying competitive wages for house-keeping and other hotel services, they doomed themselves.

        • perversatile

I was thinking the same, except with Aqualung instead of Stairway to Heaven…

  • clay

I’m a geographer; I know something about business site selection. Donnie bought casino-hotels with aging-crap amenities surrounded by larger casino-hotels with newer attractions. Of COURSE he was squeezed out of the market. And the only real hope that the Seminole have is to re-hab the Arcade pier and hope it feeds their new guest room experiences, because, otherwise, the Borgotta’s going to pull in everyone coming from the north (NYC) and the Tropicana’s going to pull in everyone coming from the west (Philly & the airport) before they ever get to that part of the Boardwalk.

    • Snarkaholic

A lot of older guests prefer the Marina district (Harrah’s, Borgota, and Golden Nugget) because they can avoid the shady characters who hang out on the Boardwalk at night.

The Pier is a disaster. Whoever did the ‘feeble-bility’ study did NOT understand that the majority of A.C.’s visitors don’t buy upscale merchandise; they, instead, flock to the dollar stores. I went into their Art of Shaving shop to buy a bar of shaving soap…$22! The last time I went into The Pier, nearly half of the shops were boarded up.

      • clay

That sounds more like the Ocean One Mall pier, down by Caesar’s and the Trump Plaza, but I haven’t been in ACNJ for a decade. Arcade Pier was almost entirely vacant and dominated by angry adolescents last time I was there when Beijing was hosting the most polluted Olympics. Trump Plaza originally had the Convention Hall and could claim some of (Caesar’s) Ocean One, but the new Convention Center behind the train station stole the old Convention Hall’s business and you’re right that no one goes to the pier mall when the outlets and dollar stores catch them first. And, again, the Trump Plaza was right in the middle, squeezed by two bigger, better neighbors.

Trump might have had the right idea about developing the Marina, but, again, he chose the wrong location and got eclipsed by Harrah’s (again) and by (Wynn’s) Borgata. Nobody even remembers that Trump used to own the Golden Nugget on the marina.

Plumbing leaks: that’s what you get when you hire unlicensed (but cheap!) plumbers.

A friend owns a condo on Burrard Street in Vancouver. The plumbing throughout the tower (15-20 stories, I’d guess) developed leaks and had to be replaced in its entirety.

Expensive and messy because the replacement required opening up wall cavities.
