LIVE VIDEO: Trump Signs Religious Liberty Executive Order Reportedly Without Feared Anti-LGBT Provisions

But we still don’t know for sure. Dominic Holden reports at Buzzfeed:

Many had expected — on the left and right — that the order would offer protections for people and corporations with a religious objection to LGBT people, far more hot button issues. The White House official said there were not plans for a separate order that addressed LGBT issues.

Speculation about what the order would say is based largely off a draft version circulated this past winter. According to leaked preliminary text, the order would block the federal government from retaliating against those who act — or refuse to act — based on their religious objections to same-sex marriage, transgender people, abortion, contraception, and sex outside marriage.

Still, the White House hasn’t released text of the final order — and several congressional offices from both sides of the aisle, conservative organizations, and liberal groups all indicated they did not have knowledge of the order’s actual contents.

Assuming they’re saying something real (a large assumption), the healthcare mandate about contraception is about the only thing the federal govt has done. The only other thing might be the guidance on trans issues, but that was just guidance, not a rule.

    • gaymex1

So I can pal around with Russians and help throw elections if I believe it’s moral and I can’t be touched by the feds. Not that there’s any chance it could be stretched to cover treason.

    • Steverino

Per this EO, we have Trump’s permission to resist him and not be punished by the federal government due to our sincerely held moral beliefs that he is immoral.

  • TexasBoy

So what happens if he signs an order and no one ever knows what it says?

    • Bad Tom

“When I use a word,” Humpty Dumpty said, in rather a scornful tone, “it means just what I choose it to mean—neither more nor less.” “The question is,” said Alice, “whether you can make words mean so many different things.” “The question is,” said Humpty Dumpty, “which is to be master—that’s all.”

  • Ryan Hunter

    • Natty Enquirer

No need for drama. The order has no effect until it’s published.

      • Bad Tom

Is that an actual point of law?

        • The_Wretched

Yes, it’s law. Any federal rule gets a Federal Register publish before it’s in effect. But it’s a triviality. It takes less than a week.

          • Librarykid

If there is anything in the order that runs counter to the Johnson Amendment, it cannot take effect without congressional action to repeal it.

          • The_Wretched

Almost, they both exist at law until someone brings the court case to clarify. You’re right that the EO cannot change legislative law. It’s why I’m looking bug eyed at the ‘direction to the IRS’ piece. The IRS doesn’t have a lot of discretion about following the law or not.

The “Religious Freedom” Executive Order has little to do with religion, and nothing to do with freedom. It is, by its very existence, anti-LGBT.

    • KarenAtFOH

It’s only OK if they’re holding LGBTs for conversion therapy.

  • JoeMyGod
    • The_Wretched

And the anti-establishment of religion side is just as strong in the Constitution and at law.

      • -M-

They’re the same thing really, an equal playing field for all religious beliefs including none is a necessary prerequisite for religious liberty. There is no freedom of religion without freedom from having someone else’s religion forced on you. People have religious freedom, churches are just one of the things people can do with that freedom.

  • Daveed_WOW

Panic is still needed here. This is STILL a secret. A secret order signed by the President. A secret order protecting people who wish to discriminate based on their religious beliefs, a clear and obvious violation of the First Amendment. Even if it doesn’t spell out permission to discriminate, it will be used to do exactly that. This is religious terrorism of the Nazi kind.

          Thanks PILES! (chuckle)

NOW I have a vision of Kimmy in a brass bra stuck in my head!

    • MaryJOGrady

      They think disagreement equals persecution.

    • Gaymurcan

My entire Xian family for not being welcome at our wedding for their shitty, lying bigotry; an event they said shouldn’t take place at all (but about which they were secretly jealous and very angry for not being invited); about which they complain to their fellow Xians, incessantly for being so, so persecuted! and for which we have apparently “ruined the lives of 34 people and dishonored the family(!)” – all of which they brought on themselves and call it, “persecution.” More like, why are we always the well-behaved ones? o_O

  • Boreal

We pray in jeebus name to fuck those fags over.

“prayer” to me sounds less coherent than Teletubbies

I would but I’m tied up at the moment….

      • ByronK

        LOL

      • Schlukitz

Someone was bound to say that sooner or later….

      • McSwagg

That could be a bit of a knotty naughty problem!

  • IAMBOWLINGGREEN

Nothing ‘humble’ about these shit bags…

    • McSwagg

About a century ago, EXXON used to be known as the Humble Oil Company.

  • ChrisInKansas

Ugh. I haven’t heard this much blathering prayer since I was guilted into going to church as a kid.

  • IAMBOWLINGGREEN

Give us the gift to hate legally, oh Yahweh…

    • Schlukitz

Not only the right to hate legally, but act on that hatred legally as well.

  • JoeMyGod

    And now Pence…..

    • safari

I’d love it if he gave a prayer to the elder gods.

    • Ragnar Lothbrok

      He talks like a minister

      • McSwagg

That’s because, like Huckabee, he is a minister on a political grift.

  • Ragnar Lothbrok

    Please clap

    • McSwagg

Can someone PLEEZE give Pence the clap he so much deserves.

  • ChrisInKansas

Pence gets an introduction and Trump doesn’t?? LOL!

  • ByronK

How nice. The Christofascist brought the Orange Teletubby with him.

  • The_Wretched

This whole ‘ceremony’ is illegal. It sure looks like they are Establishing religion.

  • M Jackson

In what way is discrimination “based on their religious objections to A, B, C, D, and FU” not inclusive of the great big “Q” that I wear in my life?
Sign this order into law. Begin the christian dominianists agenda. Now is the time for the country to face this evil, which we have here known about for years.

  • Acronym Jim

OT: Michael Strickland, the man who pulled his gun on “Hands Up Don’t Shoot PDX” protesters, has had his second amendment rights curtailed.

Do you think he will use Trump’s new EO to claim he was just expressing his sincerely held religious beliefs (aka gun worship)?

  • Ragnar Lothbrok

” Thank you for praising me “

  • Rex

Trump compares himself to God in 3…2…1…

  • IAMBOWLINGGREEN

Trump has an ‘unshakeable faith in god’.. the man who said he has never asked for forgiveness… the main tenant of their so called faith.

    • KarenAtFOH

His unshakeable faith is in himself. But it’s without merit.

    • Ragnar Lothbrok

God asks trump for forgiveness. Yes yes he does.

  • KarenAtFOH

Guess we’ll have to photograph President Bannon’s white board to find out what’s in it.

Religion will be the end of humanity.

Trump: “We won’t stand for religious descrimination”

    Also, Fuck you Gays!

  • Ragnar Lothbrok

Franklin Graham is involved ? That’s all we need to know

  • Uncle Mark

Can I assume that no one knows what’s in this EO, so it can last a few days longer before a judge shoots it down? If this narcissistic asshole actually thought this was a good and worthy “law,” then why not let Congress pass it. (Yeah, I know; Cheetolini wants to be seen making grand decrees not agreeing to bills that others have formulated & approved.)

    • safari

      The new normal?

It’s not. I mean, how can it take effect if we don’t know what counts and what doesn’t.

    Day of Prey

We are well on our way to being ruled by the Dominionists. This is just one of many steps they have, are and will be taking.

    • Tiger Quinn

Then I guess we’ll have to stop them, won’t we? Find your courage, sir.

      • MaryJOGrady

        We’ll fight them. We must.

      • Mark

My courage is exhausted! I’ve been writing about this for years and no one believed me. I’m getting up in years and the energy this takes is fucking exhausting.

  • ChrisInKansas

I don’t know how much more of this fourth grader talk I can handle.

  • Glad he cleared that up cuz that crowd was about to buy some Amway products!

  • ChrisInKansas

So great. So true. So important. So OH MY GOD SHUT UP.

  • Tiger Quinn

So now the President can sign things into being that nobody even has any idea what they say. That’s just fucking great.

    • Michael

Kinda like the GOP Healthcare Bill.

      • Tiger Quinn

True, the only thing different is the vote – on a thing they never even read! You’ve got to have some BALLS to think you’ll face your base with that on you. “Sure, I sign things into law I don’t read.”

Trump: Freedom is not a gift from government, Freedom is a gift from GOD.

    WHAT THE FUCK

    • MaryJOGrady

That is a standard hateful Jeebusite line. It’s been floating around on religious nut AM radio since 1994, at least. (That is when I started my own little Know Your Enemy program. It’s rough on my blood pressure, but many, many dreadful public policy ideas are first discussed widely on those airwaves.)

    • The_Wretched

the christianists literally take all ‘good’ things and call them from god and all evil is from satan. It’s insane but standard for them.

  • bkmn

Even if the words are not in there, expect some on the religious right will act like they are.

    • safari

I’m sure Jeff will continue tracking hate crimes. (That’s a joke.)

But not the freedom for muslims to travel into the U.S.

  • Ragnar Lothbrok

Freedoms ??? They already had that. NO, you are talking about something else. Something horrible.

  • he mentioned the election – DRINK!

  • Michael

It would be interesting to note, those LGBT provisions would surely be in there if Pence and the rest of the crew had their way. Unfortunately Pence being in power is only a matter of time.

  • William of Glynn

Let’s avoid the drama and just wait and see what this means for the LG community.

    • Michael

LOL, that ain’t gonna happen in this thread.

    • ChrisInKansas

We could have avoided “drama” if he released the text beforehand.

  • IAMBOWLINGGREEN

He says ‘faith’ and ‘religion’ but only means christian fundamentalists…

  • Ragnar Lothbrok

They’ll say what is in their hearts. That’s the problem dumbfuck.

when is he going to run for pope?

    • McSwagg

To be pope, you must sit in a special chair and be grabbed by the balls. If they grab and find pussy instead of balls, you’re disqualified. Grabbing the crotch of others is an ancient christain tradition.

Atheist sexual predator says what about Jeebus?

O/T but applicable: George Will in Wapo:
It is urgent for Americans to think and speak clearly about President Trump’s inability to do either. This seems to be not a mere disinclination but a disability. It is not merely the result of intellectual sloth but of an untrained mind bereft of information and married to stratospheric self-confidence.

    • Jess Mee

Depends on how “hot” she is.

  • Etranger

What a redundant order. We already have religious freedom enshrined in our constitution. There are no laws in the US that deny people the right to worship. Government waste at its best (i.e., time taken to make this order, assemble everyone to sign it, waste congressional time discussing what is in it, etc.)

    • The_Wretched

they want more without saying they are taking more.

      • Etranger

        EXACTLY!

      • Etranger

It should be called the “religious power” executive order. actually, “Christian Power” executive order.

        • billbear1961

    • safari

The prosperity crowd think poorness is a spiritual failing.

      • McSwagg

Right? Why can’t the poor set up their own tax exempt grifting ministry and quit demanding a share of the Jeebus favored pastor’s grift?

  • Ninja0980

So people can refuse service to Melania on the grounds she is a sinner in a fake marriage right?

    • Uncle Mark

Why would this just be limited to gov’t employees? Let’s all express our personal moralities in the workplace. Can the folks working at Chik-Fil-A refuse to serve the Drumpf because he’s a thrice-married, pussy-grabbing, hedonistic, alcohol-selling, gambling-concerns owner? Can someone working at the Hilton refuse to rent a room to an unmarried couple? (No clean towels for you.). Can I choose to not work with certain co-workers and clients because I find their personal beliefs reprehensible/incompatible with mine?

      • The_Wretched

Limiting an EO to gov’t employees makes legal sense. An executive order is a direction of the President, as chief administrator, to his staff to do things in a certain way. The President doesn’t have fiat legislative power.

        • Uncle Mark

Exactly, but he does have the power of the bully-pulpit. So why isn’t he pushing for Congress to permit us mere peasants to also have our own “religious freedom” in the workplace?

        • Jess Mee

          Try telling Trump that.

  • teedofftaxpayer

Do we know everything in that proclamation or do we know just what they released? I really don’t trust anything this administration does or says.

    • Tread

“Proclamation” is exactly the right word for what these “executive orders” are. These are decrees from a man who thinks he is king.

  • ChrisInKansas

Oh brother. In honor of MLK. If he knew what pandering was, that would be it.

    • kcken

Right, I almost threw up. Like MLK would go along with ANYTHING this racist hateful Administration was offering. MLK had both morals and principles. Trump couldn’t spell either one of those.

      • Ninja0980

His bigoted worthless niece will be on Faux soon saying just that.

So, where did these guys find a token Sikh? Did they let him read what he’s endorsing, unlike the rest of America?

  • Uncle Mark

Goddam fuckers !! I loathe the way these racist, anti-humanitarian GOP bastards try to drag MLK’s good name into their mendacities to justify the evils that they do

What? The Trump Administration misled us???

    • billbear1961

So the anti-LGBT component is implicit, just not DIRECTLY spelled out?

It’s understood to be there without SAYING it directly–spelling it out in black and white??

      • Ray Muñez

If the NBC report and he various summaries being tweeted around are accurate, and if no other order is forthcoming, then this would not have any backdoor anti-gay discrimination language. Its scope would be limited to employer-provided insurance and churches which endorse candidates.

        • billbear1961

          If . . . if . . . and for now.

You’re right. The Jarvankas play some role.

Tramp himself isn’t a gay hater and signing anything antigay right now, however tiny, would just hurt his brand.

He’s insane but also practical & lazy.

          • billbear1961

I wouldn’t call what they told us to expect “tiny.”

It was going to be pretty damned NASTY.

I was expecting a really depressing DISASTER today.

Well, I suppose the House of MURDERERS will deliver THAT.

          • His HolyShit, the Donald

I meant I didn’t think he was gonna sign anything anti-gay today, despite what people have been floating around.

Pastor Pence, Sessions & DeVos are entirely different …

          • Ray Muñez

I think they are going to be pissed. All they care about is gays and abortion. They don’t really care about “religious liberty” in any other context, so if this EO doesn’t let them screw over gay people, they won’t be happy.

    • His HolyShit, the Donald

      From NBC
“While an earlier draft of the religious liberty order would have let federal contractors discriminate against LGBT employees based on faith beliefs, Thursday’s version did not include such provisions.”

If Sessions were truly godly, he’d call out a bear from the woods to maul and kill her, like that prophet did back in the pre-Cheezus days.

  • Uncle Mark

If “freedoms come from God,” then we sure as fuck don’t need a fake-president’s EOs.

  • TJay229

White Gay Men (and some White Gay Women) overwhelmingly voted for this mess…Let that sink in.

    • Silver Badger

This one didn’t. Neither did anyone I know. Proof please.

    • Paula

This white Lesbain sure as fuck didn’t!

      • TJay229

        Oh I know you didn’t. 😊

    • DJ John Bear

Three gay men who were once friends did. They told us they were supporting Trump before election, and told us that they voted for him after the fact.

      I mother-fucking hate them now.

      • coffeehouse patron

There seems to be anecdotal evidence, such as yours, for white gay men voting for Trump, but no actual polling data. During the last several decades, the usual split for gay/lesbian voters has been 70% Democratic and 30% Republican. But Trump’s campaign and administration have steered clear of the George W. Bush/Ted Cruz Christians, so I don’t know if that split of voting percentage has changed among gay white men.

      • billbear1961

They honestly think they’ll be at home–accepted–in a FASCIST Amerika, do they, that their white skin will SAVE them?

    • TJ

Why on earth would I let bullshit “sink in”?

    • coffeehouse patron

To my knowledge, there have never been exit polls (or other types of polls) that break the gay vote down by race and/or gender. Do you know of any such data? It would be interesting, but I don’t think such polling data exists.

    • billbear1961

      Not THIS one!

I seem to recall seeing that more than 70% of LGBTs voted for Hillary. It may have been in the UPPER 70s–I can’t remember.

      But it was OVER 70%.

It was the group that turned out BEST for her!

      • coffeehouse patron

Yes, that is in sync with the pattern over the last several decades. The problem is that the polling data only shows the LGBT vote but never breaks it down by race and gender (even though the polling data in the general population is always broken down by race and gender). I don’t know how the polling percentages would change for gay white men as opposed to LGBT in general.

        • billbear1961

He who does not embrace the rainbow is a SCOUNDREL.

          • coffeehouse patron

Gay voters and gay-rights issues usually have less of an impact in midterm elections but are more high-profile in presidential elections. According to this post, Trump is not using his EO to allow companies to discriminate against same-sex married couples (or LGBT people in general). It might not be until 2020 when we see if Trump increases his share of the gay vote. I will admit that gay people in Europe face a much more drastic situation than gay people in America, and therefore anti-immigration attitudes are much higher among gay people in Europe.

        • Friday

As general patterns go, you can expect more white males in general to have voted conservative: if you apply that proportionally to the Trump votes, (which are less than third-party votes for LGBT people) the real figure might be 20-25 percent, which would be too many, but still of course nothing of ‘overwhelmingly voted for this mess.’

          • coffeehouse patron

Yes, I think your guess is about on target. The only polling data that I know of that would apply mostly to white gay men and white lesbians is from voters in Paris, where polling indicated that gay voters in Paris were substantially more likely to vote for Marine Le Pen than heterosexual voters in Paris. This is the headline from an article in the Spectator, a British newspaper: “How Marine Le Pen is winning France’s gay vote.” Here is the extended quote:

The Front National now has the support of a quarter of Paris’s gay voters – and only 16 per cent of the straight ones

            Here is the link:
            https://www.spectator.co.uk/2015/01/how-marine-le-pen-is-winning-frances-gay-vote/

By the way, I think Le Pen blew it and lost her chance to win by sneaking in a platform point against same-sex marriage in February, and then letting her niece go on a rant against same-sex marriage just yesterday. Le Pen’s chances are now doomed. Not that Macron is any prize. I think France is in for 5 very difficult years.

          • Friday

I suppose in actual Paris there’s actually some reason for gay men to feel threatened by immigrants after all that’s been going on, but of course voting for fascists won’t really bloody help there.

    • ultragreen

I don’t think this is true. According to the Pew Research Organization, the LGBT vote for president during the last election was the following:

      72% voted for Clinton (Democrat)
      13% voted for Trump (Republican)
7% voted for Gary Johnson (Libertarian)
8% voted for Jill Stein (Green)

      http://www.pewresearch.org/fact-tank/2016/10/25/lesbian-gay-and-bisexual-voters-remain-a-solidly-democratic-bloc/

      • TJay229

At no time did I say “THE LGBT VOTE”
Wait, let me guess, You’re White aren’t you…. so caught up in your Whiteness that you automatically assume that WHITE is ALL of the LGBT community huh?

Sit the fuck down somewhere, please.

      Not this one.

      • coffeehouse patron

At first, I thought TJay229’s comment was an honest inquiry. Then I noticed the identity-politics description in his avatar: “Cause I’m Black…”

Let me try to put this gently. Demonizing population demographics—either white people or white men specifically—is exactly why Democrats are losing elections. Not a very bright idea.

        • shivadog

          TJay229 is a racist pig.

        • joe ho

No. They lost the election because of Russia, Wikileaks, a rogue FBI and GOP voter suppression–not to mention a vicious attack from the far-left that repeated GOP talking points. And of course there’s the archaic electoral college system that gives the advantage to conservative rurual states.

HRC still won the pop vote by 3 million–getting more votes than any one other than Obama.

Dems lose elections because dems lack party discipline. They don’t turn out at midterm elections. They don’t come out unless they’re in love with the candidate. GOP voters, on the other hand, are disciplined and respond to the messages of fear and anger they hear from their candidates.

Stop doing Putin’s and the GOP’s work for them.

The depressing part that is unless you fight for your rights, they will go bye-bye. It’s a form of assymetric warfare. Keep everyone so exhausted that they cannot cover everything they need to. It’s Trumps single and over used (but effective) trick).

Turns churches into super pacs. Allows billions of dollars to be channeled to backing socially conservative candidates and causes.

Another big win for Green Partiers and Bernie or Busters! These fucktard far-left purists certainly succeeded in getting money out of politics.

    • ultragreen

Trump can’t turn churches into super pacs. That would require legislation from Congress, and the Federal courts would probably declare such legislation as unconstitutional. The constitutionality of Trump’s executive order is also dubious.

I thought she and her husband were supposed to be the ones secretly guiding trump from jumping off the rails from acts like this.

  • mjcc1987

trump can’t abrogate law, he’s left with nibbling around the edges. And since the eo is only applicable to the executive branch (it’s not a law), he can tell agencies what not to do. Therefore, the eo is illegal if he tells the IRS not to enforce law. I see and hear a toilet flushing soon at a courthouse near you.

  • coffeehouse patron

I think it would have been very dangerous if tax-exempt Christian pastors had been able to scream politics if this executive order had happened decades ago. However, I think critical mass has been reached. About one third of the Bible thumpers have died of extreme old age. Another third have actually changed their minds over the past 50 years and have concluded that people have the right to live their sexual lives as they wish. The last third have not changed their minds, but since the other two-thirds are gone, they have given up. My proof? White Republican voters in the Deep South soundly rejected a Bible-believing Christian and fellow Southerner, Ted Cruz. Therefore, even if Christian pastors have the freedom to scream politics from the pulpit, I don’t think it will do them much good today. Their war has been lost.

    • Friday

The right-wing preachers ahave been breaking the rules with impunity for years now, anyway… While this’ll turn megachurches directly into SuperPACs, at least it gives law-abiding clergy and the reasonable to speak up, too.

      • coffeehouse patron

You are exactly right. For many years, the right-wing preachers have been finding all sorts of ways to get around the IRS rules, while liberal denominations, such as Episcopalian, United Church of Christ and Unitarian, have been following the IRS rules. If anything, the executive order encourages liberal denominations to finally speak up for civil-rights candidates from the pulpit, something they believed was illegal before.

  • EweTaw

The Hill has the story of Donald’s EO.

    http://thehill.com/blogs/pundits-blog/religion/331944-the-government-cannot-allow-charities-to-become-dark-money-groups

Although sometimes framed in terms of religious liberty, the effect of a full repeal would broadly impact the charitable sector, and likely lead to the creation of an array of new 501(c)(3) “super dark money groups” — entities organized as charities or religious organizations, but that operate as tax-deductible vehicles for wealthy donors to secretly influence elections.

… It shouldn’t come as a surprise that most of the anonymous political funds currently flowing to 501(c)(4) entities would instead be routed to an array of newly created 501(c)(3)s formed to influence elections. The ability of donors to deduct their political contributions would be a huge incentive to create new politically active charitable vehicles, or lure existing religious institutions into taking massive donations for the purpose of intervening in elections.

And, because religious entities are exempted from the IRS form 990 reporting requirement, an organization seeking to engage in electoral politics might only need to notify the IRS of its intention to operate as a church to avoid even the minimal disclosure that now applies to dark money 501(c)(4)s.

Call it Clergymen United. Money sluices and slush funds operating under a religious cover.

    • David Walker

The new chorus I’m co-directing is in the throes of filing for 501(c)(3) status, so maybe we could operate as a front for some of the super dark money flow…for a fee, of course.

Does a religion, organized or un-, have to register with the government? Or does such registration apply only to churches?

      • coram nobis

Religious organizations are covered by 501(c)(3) status. It may involve filing a Form 990 to show that, or at least to shield themselves from local property taxes.

  • jefe5084

It doesn’t need anti-LGBT wording. That is understood by the “Religious Freedom” provisions. They go hand-in-glove.
