IT’S OFFICIAL: House To Vote On Trumpcare Tomorrow

Business Insider reports:

The House of Representatives will vote on the American Health Care Act on Thursday. Republican House Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy told reporters he plans to bring the American Health Care Act to the floor of the House and is confident that the bill will pass.

“Do we have the votes? Yes. Will we pass it? Yes,” McCarthy said. The vote will take place just over a month after House Republicans were forced to pull the AHCA from the floor just minutes before a vote after they were unable to wrangle enough of their members to vote for the bill.

  • Dear James Comey,

    Hurry the fuck up.

      Poor unfortunate souls.

  • SoCalGal20

Good luck winning re-election if you vote for this shit!

    • KnownDonorDad

And those folks vote rather reliably.

    • ‘Could be’? No, will be. By the early 2000s, the insurance companies began defining ANYTHING chronic as a disqualifying preexisting condition. Migraines and seasonal allergies were mine.

Got a bum shoulder? Needed antidepressants or ever sought mental health treatment to help you get through a rough patch? Female, pregnant or trying to be? Asthma, no matter how mild? How about just a little age-related arthritis? Any of those, you have a pre-existing condition.

For anyone who thinks this is exaggeration or hyperbole, here’s a copy of a letter from one of the last times I tried to apply for health insurance, just before ACA’s full implementation:
      https://uploads.disquscdn.com/images/503e591f9a234497e74a02cb1e512822dc7d60d167c81cc0fecce303310bac99.jpg

      • SoCalGal20

        Wow.

        • Those ‘allergies’ were not in any way life-threatening either. Just seasonal stuff that made me miserable and the migraines worse. Occasionally a sinus infection resulting.

Treatment? At the time in the 1990s, Flonase was prescription-only, so the only way I could get it was by seeing my doctor every 6 months or so for a re-up. Now it is available OTC, so I don’t even have a reason to see a doctor for that particular problem.

But the question appeared on every single health insurance form I filled out from 2002 through 2012. “Seasonal or hayfever allergies, Yes or No.”

          • His HolyShit, the Donald

Just found out pregnancy and/or abortion were pre-existing conditions, too. 🙁

          • zhera

How is abortion a condition, pre-existing or not?

          • McSwagg

There’s the whole debunked pseudoscience connection between abortion and breast cancer, depression, and anything else they want to invent.

          • BJORN RAGNVALDR

            Trump

          • His HolyShit, the Donald

That’s what they counted as “pre-existing”

            Doens’t make sense to me

      • Bad Tom

        Not so long ago.

      • narutomania

The republikkklans said that they may try to keep in a provision that would mandate coverage of pre-existing conditions.

But then they said that they would allow insurance companies to charge those customers MORE for their coverage than so-called “healthy” customers. (Which is, of course, an oxymoron in the healthcare business, because if you use your health cover, then you can’t be healthy!)

So in essence, they would likely price those policies far above what any person could afford, in effect making it impossible for them to get coverage.

        Lovely people, aren’t they??

      • bkmn

I am very suspicious of AARP on this issue. They make a lot of money (via United Healthcare – you know, the company that pulled out of Obamacare to weaken it ahead of the election) off of their insurance products. They have a hand in the game.

        • Bj Lincoln

I still have them. I don’t understand. I picked them when I applied and nothing has changed for me since.

          • Xiao Ai: The Social Gadfly

It has for us here in Arizona and they completely pulled out of AZ except for Medicare. I’m leaving UHC my next switch date.

        • netxtown

I wouldn’t give you two plug nickels for anything from AARP.

      • cleos_mom

That being the “Presbyterian Insurance Company” even sums up the state of organized religion in the US.

      • ColdCountry

Yup. When you get to be my age – sixties – everything can be defined as a preexisting condition. The preexisting condition being having lived long enough to start wearing things out.

        • prixator

          Life is a preexisting condition.

          Death is a post-existing condition.

    • Dave Babler

Didn’t that group overwhelmingly vote for him?

If so…then let the leopards loose! I’m done feeling empathy for them. Empathy is how you lose elections. It’s time for liberals to start playing dirty like the right does.

    • bkmn

I was really surprised over the weekend that the AARP website had nothing about this bill on their home page. It made me glad I am not a member – if they can’t feature the biggest issue on their homepage they are not doing things right.

      • safari

I don’t know their criteria, but I’m getting AARP stuff in the mail. I’m a long way from retirement.

        • McSwagg

You become eligible for membership at age 50 if I recall.

          • safari

Yeah. I’m closer to 20. For now.

          • McSwagg

Remember, as you age, to stay young at heart.

          • Bj Lincoln

The weekend I turned 50, I started getting AARP stuff as well as other old fart adverts.

          • ColdCountry

I started getting stuff from them when in my thirties.

        • bkmn

I started seeing mailers from them when I was 45 – you can join when you are 50. I figure any organization that is sending out mailers that far in advance is not worthy of any of my money.

    • Bj Lincoln

I am one of those with heart issues.

      • McSwagg

Stay healthy BJ. In my opinion, you’ve got one of the best hearts out there.

    • TK

Americans are stupid. The anger from this won’t last till the midterms.

      • Gerry Fisher

I dunno. This is highly likely to be the “gift” that keeps on giving.

    • William

I want my congressman’s next job to be scraping dead animals off the highways.

      • LADY MABELINE

My congressman is Adam Schiff. He was given a standing ovation at our town hall. We are spoiled in blue California.

        • BudClark

Thank the GODS for Gov. Jerry Brown, the California Legislature, and blue California voters. I feel RELATIVELY safe in California.

      Patriot Act, anyone?

      • That one actually had text available, as it had been sitting on the GOP’s authoritarian wish-list for more than a decade, really.

This here is literally a bill that’s been cobbled together out of bits and pieces almost no one has seen all of.

        • SoCalGal20

Trump and friends are a fascist nightmare but the Congressional Republicans are as bad and as criminal imo. The only difference is that they don’t have the nuclear button. But they think nothing of killing millions of Americans.

          • Xiao Ai: The Social Gadfly

So when are we going to start thinking about killing them?

If they have the votes, they’d schedule it right now.
They don’t which means some Rep must have cold feet still over this.

    • MikeBx2

I agree. Announcing the vote is meant to pressure some still on the fence. If they aren’t certain of passing tomorrow, they’ll pull the vote like last time.

    • SoCalGal20

They have to wait until tomorrow so that Jason Chaffetz can rush back from his emergency foot surgery to vote. /s (Not kidding about him coming back to vote tomorrow).

  • Cuberly
    • BearEyes

Dems need to go full attack mode for all repubs voting aye

      • Cuberly

        The ads are writing themselves.

      • SoCalGal20

I hope they have some ads ready to go.

        • McSwagg

Those ads need to start airing in red districts tomorrow, as soon as they can edit the GOP Rep’s name into the video.

          • SoCalGal20

There’s already some group that runs ads against Darrell Issa in my area. I see them when I watch MSNBC. I assume we will be getting more of that.

          • McSwagg

Good, but there needs to be ads specifically about this healthcare debacle starting as soon as the vote is taken and running relentlessly nonstop into the first week of November 2018.

          • SoCalGal20

            Oh, I agree.

  • Ninja0980

My Rep’s phone line is jammed, fancy that.
He knows if he signs this, he’s toast.

    • SoCalGal20

Duncan Hunter’s Washington office voicemail is full.

    • Hank

Fortunately, in SE Florida, most of the Rep’s are Democrats. However, in the third largest state by population, and one with a significantly more mature population, Florida is ranked only 18th in per capita income

  • Sam_Handwich

i’m anticipating another bill pulled at the last minute

    republicans can’t count

    • Cuberly

Ugh, ever since the election my certitude sense has evaporated.

      • Dramphooey

        That’s a good thing!

        • Cuberly

          lol….actually that’s not funny.. 🙁

    • Even if this passes, it won’t pass the Senate, right?

      • My optimism regarding anything the GOP touches is entirely gone.

        • Natty Enquirer

“Optimism” and “GOP” in the same sentence??

          • Optimism that they will fail. Optimism that they won’t do shit that’ll bring on the torches and pitchforks. Optimism there are still a few of ’em with an ounce of human decency and compassion.

            So, yes. That’s what’s gone.

      • Gay Fordham Prep Grad

Do not ever say that; if Donald Trump could win the presidency, this thing could easily pass in the senate and signed into law. Nancy Pelosi can scream to high heaven that they “will be held accountable,” to me, that sounds like the UN saying sarin strikes are civilians are “totally unacceptable.” Useless, meaningless nonsense.

      • McSwagg

Not unless Yertle the Turtle goes nuclear on the 60 vote requirement for legislation. They only canned the 60 vote requirement for the confirmation of Gorsuck.

        • And he said he won’t. But we all know he has before. And he’s a republican so…

          • McSwagg

            Rethuglicans NEVER tell the truth.

    • stevenj

      I hope you’re right Sam.

    • FAEN

I hope the Dems know what they’re doing. They insist this bill will die in the Senate. These days I put nothing beyond the realm of possibility politics wise.

      • Ninja0980

It’s why I think they are stupid to be rooting for this to pass the House.
People will be hurt and if they are seen cheering that, they will pay a price as well.

      • McSwagg

It has to get 60 votes in the Senate unless the Reds go nuclear.

        • safari

Which they might. Donald has already called the rules archaic.

          • safari

(I know. I was surprised he knew that word.)

    • Joe in PA

I JUST sent an email to my rep (Costello) saying basically the same thing. He’s been consistently saying he would vote no…we shall see tomorrow when the shit gets real.

I’m hearing conflicting things, but can’t they slip this in under reconciliation? At least it’s designed that way, isn’t it? I think it hinges on how much it costs in 10 years or something?

  • Paul David

    Jesus fucking christ.

The worst part about this is that (1) they probably have the votes to pass this stinker, and (2) it’s being passed early enough in the term for the morons that make up the American voting public to completely forget that it was the GOP who took away their healthcare.

If they are truly smart they’ll start a nice little war after passing this fucker, start furiously waving the flag and bible, and all will be forgotten in a fog of Toby Keith songs and jingoistic bullshittery.

    • Ninja0980

Sad to say but it’s why if there has to be a government shutdown, I want it to be in September.
There are elections this fall, and it will be easier to make the Republicans pay for those races with crap like that.

      • Paul David

Yeah, the problem now is that anything that happens for the next 5-6 months will be long forgotten come the 2018 midterms.

And we Dems don’t need that. Of course, if they do pass Trumpcare, it will be hitting people’s pocketbooks around election time…so, in a perverse way, we should be cheering it to be passed.

    • another_steve

The Ryan monster wouldn’t allow it to come to a vote if he didn’t have the votes.

What’s the fate of the bill in the Senate?

      I’ve lost track.

      • Paul David

        Doesn’t look to pass.

The GOP only has 52 seats in the Senate, so passing any of their super partisan bullshit is basically off the table.

This is esp. the case since there are a fair number of GOP senators from blue/purple states.

    • worstcultever

Don’t worry about Dumpycare. It’s nothing but puke circle jerk theater. Let the house pass it, so what. Dumpy gets to do a bullshit victory dance (which the media will of course breathlessly abet). It WILL NOT survive the senate. Possibly in any form.

I too worry about war/”terror attack” diversion. It’s all they’ve got, so probably 100% likelihood.

      • Paul David

After Dubya, war is just what they do.

It feeds the military contractors, and keeps Trump happy in that his base will love love LOVE it.

Boy, his only claim to power is the army of kooks and weirdos he’s gathered to his side…if he ever loses that, watch out.

  • Bob Conti

To quote Selena Meyer from VEEP… “I hate this country.”

That’s a terrific reason for CA to do the right thing and go forward with their own single payer system, which Dianne Feinstein doesn’t support. I’m sure it has nothing to do with the dump trucks full of cash she receives from the health insurance lobby.

      • Cuberly

Actually the AHCA makes it very difficult for individual states to implement their own state health plan coverage. The GOP purposely made it so employers could venture out of state to get the least degree of coverage yet, call it coverage.

      • BudClark

I am shocked, surprised, and disappointed at Senator Feinstein, and have told her so.

We saw the seeds of that at the hearings today.

  • Cuberly

Um, read a random tweet in a thread stating the reason the GOP is falling on this petard is because they’re using t as a distraction for a Johnson Amendment repeal, didn’t say if this was being voted on tomorrow but it’d make sense.

Aside from the loan and subsequent college closing, the two most damning allegations for Bernie in particular are that his office engaged in strong-arming bank loan officers and that his wife did a no-bid to implement a woodworking program that is run by the daughter. I should note that even though the college is closed, the woodworking school is still above water.

          • Ninja0980

Even if this doesn’t go anywhere, anyone think the Republicans wouldn’t have been talking about this if Bernie had won?

          • McSwagg

            Talking? No.
They’d be shouting it from the rooftops.

          • Ninja0980

The sleazy lawyers involved in this had been going after the Clintons for years and were already going after Bernie.

          • McSwagg

It’s how he has historically run his businesses and he promised to run the government the same way. It’s one promise I’m afraid he’d be eager to keep.

Slightly OT: I just had some cannabis-infused honey in my coffee … within fifteen minutes, my joints were freed up, and I was pain-free. By contrast, opiates take an hour or two to work, IF they work.

Jeff Sessions can kiss my superannuated homosexual posterior!

        • The_Wretched

I have a spinal fusion and opiates are the only class of painreliever that helps it. I’d have to try a cannabis edible, the smoked version just makes me feel nausea.

  • Blake J Butler

a part of me wants it to pass. And let the republicans face backlash and their bases suffers and dies from their ignorance, more quickly rather than later.

And the more rational, humane side of me (damn) wants the bill to fail because of the many many, people that depend on the ACA and will not be able to afford healthcare under trumpdontcare 2.0. Likely to get sick and die from not being able to afford treatment, or have things covered that they used to.

What i would really want is for those that wanted the ACA repealed, and wanted it chunked, along with keeping the religious mandate, should take the ending result should the ACA be repealed.

And lets remember, sometimes they don’t like it if you aren’t in THEIR district…but remind them that even though you aren’t, THEIR VOTE AFFECTS YOUR LIFE. So in that sense they ARE your representative.

      • SoCalGal20

All of them also have local offices in their districts. It’s always an option to call there, though regarding tomorrow’s vote calling the DC office will probably be the best.

  • Daveed_WOW

That’s fine. I’ll just go to the Emergency Room for every medical need including my annual physical and lab tests. I won’t pay the bill and the fucking government can figure out how to pay the hospital. Free medicine!

And other thing….I’m prepared to quit my job for one that doesn’t pay as much so I can qualify for free prescriptions for my chronic condition. This is what they want and this is what they’re going to get.

Another productive citizen jettisoned from the workforce because I just can’t afford to work.

    • The bill is not going to pass the Senate in reconciliation or otherwise. At best, they are sending it back to the House will all sorts of amendments — and we will be back to ground one all over again. Our current system remains in place until any changes are in effect. The vote tomorrow is merely to cover Ryan’s butt and keep his job.

Here are the remaining undecided Republicans – there are 26 remaining.
    There are 17 confirmed nos.
6 of these Republicans need to vote no for the bill to fail.

    Adam Kinzinger(IL-16)
    Brian Mast(FL-18)
    Carlos Curbelo(FL-26)
    Claudia Tenney(NY-22)
    Darrell Issa(CA-49)

    Raul Labrador(ID-1)
    Rick Crawford(AR-1)
    Rod Blum(IA-1)
    Rodney Frelinghuysen(NJ-11)
    Susan Brooks(IN-5)
    Tom Garrett (VA-5)
    —————————————–
Note from me — Amash, Brooks, Labrador, Blum, are freedom caucus members. Rick Crawford (Arkansas 1st) is probably right wing and a new member- they do not actually release a list.

    • SoCalGal20

If Issa votes yes he can kiss his seat goodbye. He won’t win again.

      • I am curious how the remaining Freedom Caucus members — including super right wing Amash of Michigan– are going to vote. They are viscerally opposed to any subsidies, even the watered down ones that the Ryan plan calls for. Trump has threatened to come and campaign against them if they vote against the plan — I wonder if he will get any opposition on the right.

        • safari

I can’t see Amash going anywhere.

          • So he might give Trump the finger and vote no. I would.

          • BudClark

I agree with your sentiments, but MY finger is going nowhere NEAR Trump’s asshole! (chuckle)

      • Cuberly

        • BudClark

His stand on healthcare is “none of our business?” Who in the HELL does he think he IS???

    • Ninja0980

Claudia Tenney may very well vote no because even though she is a far right nutjob, if she goes all out, she’ll meet the same fate as Ann Burekle (one and done teabagger) did and she knows it.

      • She looks vulnerable to me. There is a third party also in her district.
She also barely won her primary upstate.

U.S. House, New York District 22 General Election, 2016

        Republican Claudia Tenney 46.5% 129,444
        Democratic Kim Myers 41.1% 114,266

She is, something she should have realized when she lost her primary challenge to Richard Hanna.
This district like Rockfeller Republicans, not far right teabagger ones.

          • Yes, he built SUNY Binghamton and the other colleges there. That is the most famous part of the area isn’t it?

          • Ninja0980

            It is.
Wonderful area, albeit underwater in parts right now.

    • I count five from CA and NY — both states where residents won’t even be able to make use of the subsidies, by law.

In California, state law (the Knox Keene Act) includes abortion among the basic health services that all individual and small-group plans must cover. Moreover, courts since 1981 have interpreted the state’s constitution as requiring neutral treatment of pregnancy and abortion coverage; if pregnancy is covered, abortion must also be covered. New York prohibits excluding or limiting coverage by type of medical condition and requires insurance policies that include medical or surgical care to also cover abortion. (A recent proposed regulation would make this requirement more explicit and require coverage without copays, coinsurance, or a separate deductible.)

  • zhera

This is scary and horrifying. Are there Democrats voting for this or can GOP push it through without the Dems?

Fucking Paul Ryan and his mission to destroy ACA.

I discussed healthcare once with my catholic friend. She was firm in her belief that health insurance is the right way to do it. Those who can’t afford it can apply for freebies from the hospitals because the hospitals do those things ALL the time.

What is it about the religious folks who love the idea of people begging for crumbs?

    • safari

    • Skeptical_Inquirer

It’s a powertrip. I’m guess she’s not the one begging. Ask her if she’d like someone to demand she bark like a dog and play fetch if she ever needed treatment.

      • zhera

She’s definitely not the one begging, she’s quite well off. But she claims to have grown up poor so she’s supposed to know about this first hand.

        • Skeptical_Inquirer

Honestly, I think a lot of people forget especially if they’ve been rich a long time or think they’re so much better than other people. Ben Carson was definitely poor but now wants to make public housing really shitty. Paul Ryan got help from the government when he was a kid but now is Mr. Ayn Rand. I’m also reminded of women who were treated ghastly as young wives by the family they married into who then terrorize their daughter-in-laws.

    • McSwagg

It’s the only way hey can get people to listen to their sermons. Also, the catholic hospitals don’t give anything away for free. It’s the public hospital districts that take care of the indigent.

      • BudClark

Not entirely true. Some of the Catholic hospitals still owned and operated by Orders of Catholic nuns are at the forefront of fighting for the poor, the abortion “controversy” notwithstanding.

        • McSwagg

Yes, it’s always the nuns showing compassion in defiance of orders from the bishops, cardinals, and pope.

    • BudClark

Paul Ryan CLAIMS to be a faithful Roman Catholic. I guess he’s never read Pope Francis’ many pronouncements on social justice and the sin of unbridled capitalism. For all its faults, the papacy has a history of such pronouncements going back to at least Leo XIII.

According to Catholic belief, the Pope is “infallible” when he speaks on issues of faith or morals. Certainly his pronouncements on capitalism fall under “morals.”

Paul Ryan is essentially denying a core Catholic belief.

      • zhera

We all remember Ryan and the missus ‘helping out’ at a homeless shelter during the 2012 campaign…

  • Friday

I hope the people the Republicans are about to kill will haunt the right wing for a long time to come, cause that’s what this is. They’re about to kill a lot of people to give the rich more money and stick a cross on it.

Keep in mind that they also pay an average of 7% of their income on water because they have the highest rates in the nation. They are double the average.

      • SoCalGal20

And they’re being billed for water they can’t even use. It’s a fucking disgrace.

This also happened in Detroit and there was a whole fundraising thing where people from around the country paid off water bills for people. And it’s happening in Detroit again.

America is the only ‘first world ‘nation that makes her citizens pay for their healthcare.

I was going to take a couple of months off but can’t afford to since I’m having health issues and can’t be without insurance for the next 5 months (takes 3 months to get it back.) .

Odd how low income can get free healthcare but it’s the “middle class” that ends up paying for it. This country is so screwed up it’s unreal.

It will cost a trillion dollars, THAT’S ONE THOUSAND BILLIONS, to keep the government running till September, but we can’t have universal heath care. There is something drastically wrong with that !

    • safari

Donald is declaring victory that for every $1 in domestic spending increases he’s getting $1.20 for the military, breaking the sequester (fiscal cliff).

    • Do Something Nice

I did see a picture of a nice Irish Ogham script tattoo that ran from the guy’s armpit to his ankle. It’s unusual and it would be culturally/ethnically appropriate as I have Irish ancestry.

          • Cuberly

            Well there ya go.

It’s all in the execution and thought behind the choice. No surprise there.

I designed a few tattoos for myself but haven’t committed yet. One is from one of the very first graphic design pieces I did in college. We’re talking 1983. Still think I may get that one done. I remember every second of my formerly closeted self drawing that.

          • Skeptical_Inquirer

Ingredient breakdown of tattoo ink may be hard to come by and it seems that metal and metal oxides are often used, according to wiki. So I agree it would probably have an adverse effect on you.

            Those are gorgeous.

I live near UC Berkeley the California College of the Arts, and an Oakland High School.

I see so many young people/kids with HUGE tattoos walking around. It sorta startles me every time I see it. Such a long term decision at such a young age. Some of the design appropriation bothers me.

Tribal tattoos always grate on my nerves to begin with when they’re on someone utterly divorced from that particular culture. How does a Haida tribal pattern matter to a german irish 17yo. But then I had my piercing phase so I gotta cool my judgement jets and not act like the olde fella on the porch finger wagging at the younguns.

          • Tor

I find tattoos fascinating, but I can’t imagine what image I’d want on my body for the rest of my life. I change my mind too often.

I know two homocons/former gay porn stars in LA who voted for Trump.
And now they are whining because some of their friends could be hurt by this repeal.
This on the heels of them whining about Trump going after the trans community and being worried about their marriage rights now.
To them, I say FUCK YOU and not in the way you worked for a living.
You wanted Trump, you got him.
Don’t feign concern for the folks you didn’t give a damn about before.

    • safari

What did they think would happen?

      • Ninja0980

Trump would stop big bad Muslims and bring back jobs and leave trans folks etc. alone.
Every negative belief folks have about porn stars, these two fools reinforce in spades.

    • I don’t see anything yet on the web. If he did die they would not announce it until the morning. We would have no idea for a few hours. They do not call “emergency meetings”. They post a billet on the gates of the Palace and the BBC announces it — they play the national anthem and they will show the Royal Standard, all that. He is getting on though and his death is coming at some point.

      Indeed.

      • When the time comes for Her Majesty or the Duke of Edinburgh to pass, the BBC will announce it in sombre tones and play the National Anthem along with the Royal Standard like they did for the Queen Mother. Then we will know. And, hopefully, the announcer will have the good taste to wear a black tie. https://youtu.be/UC0SqYYQmIM

    • safari

If it’s the queen something like 1-3% of their GDP will be lost because of the disruption. The BBC is to halt programming, switch to “light” comedy and music; currency and other portraits are to be changed; and probably hundreds of other little things occur over around a week.

      Forgive my ignorance

      • Lazycrockett

The only thing that happens royal wise is Edward would inherit the Duke Title. QE2 isn’t gonna give up that crown till they take it off her cold dead head.

        • DaddyRay

          Thanks

        • And he does not become Duke of Edinburgh until she dies. She put that in — she does not want him called that in her lifetime.

      • The succession is this:
        1. Prince Charles
        2. Prince William
        3. Prince George
        4. Princess Charlotte
        5. Prince Harry (Henry)
        6. Prince Andrew
        7. Princess Beatrice
        8, Princess Eugenie
        ——————–
In the event that Prince George or Princess Charlotte were to become King or Queen at minority age (under 18), a Regent would be appointed by Parliament to reign until they turned 18 — or a later age as Parliament sees fit. The Regent would most likely be Prince Harry.

      • safari

How about two plans: they kill their base; we get universal coverage.

      • Maybe it’s this cunning plan:
        1. Pass AHCA because Donald is sure to take 1000% of the credit for it passing and will spend all of his time crowing about it, even as people realize they were as conned as his Trump University ‘students’
        2. Use the savings to use reconciliation to enact the $1T tax cut which is the real reason all of this is happening
        3. Donald is impeached or resigns in disgrace and suddenly Trumpcare becomes all his fault, according to the GOP

        • Skeptical_Inquirer

They may want it to be like that but the fact it got to his desk would be hard as heck to explain without their sign-on.

Meanwhile, GOPers in Congress will soon be on the record insisting the whole thing was the President’s doing.

But enough about Trump tweeting about his latest bowel movement

    • I saw a relayed tweet that French media is saying it was Philip.

    • Prince Philip opened a cricket grounds stadium yesterday afternoon. But let’s say he suddenly passed 12 hours ago. It is possible.
      The procedure would be this.
      1. They palace would discretely call his immediately family to come and gather with Her Majesty. They would know not to say anything. The Prime Minister, Theresa May, would be contacted. She would then contact her Foreign Secretary. All would be hush – hush. It would be crucial that the BBC, Sky News and ITV be contacted first — but not yet. See the Crown on Netflix — for the Hyde Park Corner Episode 2- Although Philip’s death would not be as tragic as the death of King George VI who lead Britain through the War and died at age 56 – thrust into a job he did not want.
      2. As soon as the family gathered, and the rest of the Royal Family (The Kents and Gloucesters) and the Prime Ministers of the Commonwealth Realms where the Queen is Head of State would be contacted — about 15 minutes before the BBC would break the news. They would probably contact Prime Ministers of Canada, Australia and New Zealand immediately — but they would be told to be discrete.
      3. At the exact same time, an announcement that Prince Philip has died would be posted on the Gates of Buckingham Palace. The BBC and the other services would be given the code to broadcast the message, play the National Anthem and the Royal Standard flying like they did for the Queen Mother’s death. We would also see an announcement on the Monarchy’s web site.
      4. The Foreign Scty would have the Ambassadors contact the heads of state around the world to notify them.
It would be handled with dignity.
And there would be no need for emergency “rush meetings” to London.

If you read the Birmingham News (newspaper) one of the women, age 61, refused to negotiate – she wants it to go to court. And why not laugh – Dr. King’s widow wrote a letter against Sessions being nominated way back 60s or 70s.
Mrs. King called him a racist. This woman laughed when a Republican called Sessions a man that never discriminated..

    • Have a care with rousing the outrage on this one. Apparently the laughter was going to get her removed, regardless. Word is the jury convicted because she made a ruckus as she was being removed and violated the ban on picketing Senate hearings.

In a previous court filing, prosecutors said Fairooz “let out aloud [sic] burst of laughter, followed by a second burst of laughter” in response to Shelby’s comments. They said she grew “loud and more disruptive” when officers “attempted to quietly escort” her from the room. Fairooz, the government alleged, “created a scene after scoffing at Senator Shelby’s comments and then yelling that Senator Sessions’ voting record was ‘evil,’ while simultaneously waving a sign that read: ‘support civil right stop sessions.’”

“Why am I being taken out of here?” Fairooz asked. “I was going to be quiet, and now you’re going to have me arrested? For what?” Fairooz also referred to Sessions’ record as “evil,” Shelby’s comment as “ridiculous,” and appeared to hold up her sign, which could violate the ban on picketing.

Which makes tweets saying the flag is flying at half mast all the more dubious

What Happens When Prince Philip Dies?
The plans for the passing of Queen Elizabeth’s husband, 94, are in order.

    http://www.thedailybeast.com/articles/2015/09/06/what-happens-when-prince-philip-dies

Eight days of official mourning would be observed by all staff at the palace. Flags at major institutions and military establishments (especially naval ones, given the Duke’s service in the Royal Navy) would be flown at half mast, but the Royal Standard flag which flutters above Buckingham Palace when the Queen is in residence would not be lowered to half mast.

The Standard signifies the inviolability and continuity of the monarch, and the refusal to fly this flag at half-mast was the cause of much anger after the death of Diana. The impasse was eventually resolved when the Royal Standard above the Palace was replaced by the Union Jack (even though the Queen was still in residence and this change was in defiance of all convention) which can be flown at half mast. Such populist pandering would be an insult to Philip, the ultimate stiff upper lip merchant.

    • A story about this-
When Queen Victoria died at Osborne, on the Isle of Wight, her son, King Edward VII (Bertie) accompanied his mother’s casket on board the royal yacht to Portsmouth.
When he boarded the yacht, he saw the Royal Standard at half mast.
He asked the Commander of the Yacht, Why is the Royal Standard at half mast?
The Commander answered, rather confused, “But The QUEEN of England is dead Sir!”
Bertie ‘s answer ” And The KING of England Lives!”
      And the Standard was raised.

Of course, Queen Victoria’s was not televised. But her funeral procession through London — from Waterloo to Paddington Stations — captured on film — in 1901 – was majestic, and will be equaled if not surpassed in terms of grandeur, if not in terms of numbers of troops and Kings attending– then in terms of world importance. https://youtu.be/-nRKdpK3r5c

          • Netflix. Season 1 of ‘Into the Badlands.’

          • I like “Cable Girls” on Netflix – the new series from Spain.
I also like, on Amazon Prime, the Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, which is a must -see one hour pilot set in 1959 Manhattan. I would see that first. But since we are concentrating on Royal Funerals, seeing Hyde Park Corner, #2 on The Crown on Netflix might be appropriate — even as a repeat.

          • safari

I’ve just been watching a lot of UK region-specific murder mysteries on Netflix.

I must admit, watching Twitter do its thing is a good exercise in the game of telephone.

        https://www.theguardian.com/world/2017/may/04/french-election-marine-le-pen-and-emmanuel-macron-trade-insults-in-tv-debate

In the prolonged two-and-a-half-hour slanging match that featured more invective than any other debate in French presidential history, Macron branded Le Pen an ill-informed, corrupt, dangerously nationalistic and “hate-filled” liar who “fed off France’s misery” and would bring “civil war” to France. She in turn called the former economy minister an arrogant, spoilt, cold-eyed, “smirking banker” who was colluding with Islamists, complacent on terrorism and intent on “butchering France” in favour of “big economic interests”.

Both accused the other of taking French people for imbeciles. At one point, after a long attack saying Le Pen was lying to the French public, Macron snapped: “I’m sorry, Madame Le Pen; France deserves better than you.”

        • wow, that’s pretty ruff. i wish we had politicians willing to speak like that. it would be fun.

  • Stop trying to force this shit sandwhich down America’s throats.

We don’t want to force people out of the country even if they’re dual citizens, green-card holders, or whatever else just because they happened to be from a Muslim nation.

We don’t want businesses to kick out people just because they happen to be black, gay, Jewish, or whatever else.

We don’t want hate crimes to go unpunished just because the victims were minorities.

We don’t want to see hundreds of people go without basic health care in order to make sure that the richest of the rich can buy more yachts.

For fuck’s sake, the majority of the country hates this. Survey after survey shows that. We don’t live in an apartheid state where this tiny niche of power gets to fuck over everybody else (at least, not yet). God.
