New York Becomes Fourth State To Reaffirm North Carolina Travel Ban After Fake Repeal Of Hate Law

Via press release:

Today, the Human Rights Campaign (HRC) and Equality NC hailed the news that Governor Andrew Cuomo has reaffirmed New York’s ban on taxpayer-funded travel to North Carolina. The announcement comes after North Carolina Governor Roy Cooper, Senate President Phil Berger, and House Speaker Tim Moore passed a law — HB 142 — doubling down on many of the worst aspects of the state’s notorious anti-LGBTQ HB2 law.

“We are grateful for Governor Cuomo’s leadership in reaffirming the state’s travel ban that makes clear just how devastating this anti-LGBTQ legislation in North Carolina truly is,” said JoDee Winterhof, HRC Senior Vice President for Policy and Political Affairs. “His action today protects New Yorkers and prevents taxpayer funds from being spent in a state that fundamentally treats LGBTQ people as second-class citizens.”

“New York has joined a growing list of states and cities who see HB142 for what it really is — a continuation of the deeply discriminatory HB2,” said Equality NC Executive Director Chris Sgro. “We are appreciative of New York Governor Cuomo’s leadership, standing up against the anti-LGBTQ legislation in North Carolina, and showing that HB142 is not the solution. Lawmakers in North Carolina must immediately consider non-discrimination protections for LGBTQ people if they are truly interested in protecting their constituents. It should now be clear to Berger, Moore, and Cooper that they did nothing to repeal HB2, and we will continue to he hurt until they do.”

New York joins an ever-growing chorus of states and cities not fooled by North Carolina’s new anti-LGBTQ law, including Washington; California; Minnesota; Chicago; New York City; Washington, DC; San Francisco; Seattle; Portland, OR; Atlanta; Baltimore; Burlington, VT; Los Angeles; Oakland; Santa Fe; Cincinnati; Salt Lake City; Palm Springs, CA; West Palm Beach; Portland, ME; and Wilton Manors, FL.

I know that even if it passes the House it will likely die in the Senate but I don’t want to see them getting any closer than necessary. They are rushing it through before it has even been scored by the CBO, and that is for a big reason, lots of people will be harmed by it.

Glad my thoughts and prayers could help.

      • Blake J Butler

he was one of the biggest stains on the town of Fouke, Arkansas. Aside from the local evangelical population infiltrating the school, with nuttery buttery religious crap.

You could not go anywhere in Texarkana without getting one of his hateful pamphlets on your car wherever you went.

Racists, sexists, homophobes, etc. And Alamo was allowed to have a compound there and have a public street cornered off for housing on his compound. Until the compound was raided and the property returned back to hands of the public. He was allowed to do that for years.

They are still trying to sell off the houses where the abuses took place, and they won’t sell. No one will buy them, and i do not blame them. Overpriced and a tough sell regarding the history of the properties.

        • djcoastermark

Can’t say I blame anyone at all for not wanting to live in a place with such a history. I sure as heck wouldn’t at any price.

          • Blake J Butler

      Good to heara1
      May it continue!

    • Congratulations, Treant! Something change? You get treatment for it?

      • Treant

I started the recommended vitamins (which do have double-blind experimental support) that my family doctor mentioned. It’s weird, but 12 days of the B vitamins and the headaches have already decreased in intensity. Today I noticed I simply didn’t have one.

I can’t get in to the neurologist until January and the other neurologist is supposed to call me back. But it’s been a week, so…

        • Wow, a vitamin regimen. I never would’ve thunk it.

          • Treant

Turns out magnesium, melatonin, and riboflavin all have good experimental support. Co-Q10 has some. B6, folic acid, and B12 have a little.

          • I may look into trying that. I’ve had a non-stop migraine for the last few weeks. Seems to have become a regular springtime thing for me.

          • Natty Enquirer

Could be allergy/sinus-related. I’m deep into my Flonase already.

I have a great aunt who is 105 years-old and has been taking CoQ10 since it was first formulated as supplement. She swears by it. Something is keeping her heart and mind working. Can’t say for sure it’s the CoQ10, but it can’t hurt.

          • Treant

Supposedly, it can take up to four months to kick in. I cannot imagine–other than perhaps a severe deficiency, which I doubt I had–why I’m getting results this fast.

          • Michael R

<— can't survive without melatonin and B vitamins

          • EweTaw

I’ve tried melatonin a couple of times. The first time it worked to help reset my time clock and get to sleep. Subsequent doses caused mild nausea and nervousness. Tried it again a year later following strict instructions. Same results. But a little melatonin is great for getting a noisy niece or nephew to settle down and take a nap. Tasteless in cocoa.

        • Natty Enquirer

Wow, cured without paying $$$$ to Big Pharma. That’s great news.

          • Treant

            No, but it’s $15 a month to Big Vitamin, so… 🙂

Nice gestures like this aside, no way in hell should Cuomo be the nominee.
The Moreland commission alone and him helping the GOP keep control of our State Senate is enough of a reason to keep him the hell away from the nomination.

Hubs just finished booking our flights to DC for Capitol Pride/ March. Found the cheapest deal on American (ugh, but hey ) We had to be sure there were no stops in NC. And as a side note, still not shopping at Lowes or any other NC based business.

Interesting story in the L.A. Times about the new Democratic Registrar in Maricopa County, Arizona. Seems the previous registrar (a Republican, go figure!) had a very strict interpretation of AZ voter law and refused to process thousands of voter registration applications. Gonna be lots of new people registered to vote in Maricopa County.

The previous recorder, Helen Purcell, also closed many polling places, making it nearly impossible for many people to vote.

      • SoCalGal20

That’s good news. The woman who was the registrar was a raving bitch. No other word quite describes her as well as bitch. Raving, raging, nasty, unattractive, unreasonable, petty, unkind, useless are also adjectives that can be used with the noun. 🙁

      • SoCalGal20

I remember how she cut the number of polling locations for the primary last year and it was a nightmare. I assume that’s one of the reasons she didn’t get re-elected.

    • Ninja0980

Yup, and it shows why even not so sexy races like this matter.
Voter suppression and other tactics happen at the state level more then the federal one.
Winning races like this matter just as much as Congress and the Senate.

      • SoCalGal20

If Democrats need to focus their resources, I’d start with county Registrar and state Sec of State offices. That’s where all the voting and voter registration stuff is handled. And of course getting the majority in some state legislatures would be nice to cut off voter suppression laws.

        • Ninja0980

Indeed, to put it bluntly, Democrats have to be called out for not caring about local and state races like this as long as they did.
Republicans knew these races mattered, such a shame our side didn’t for the longest time.

The bill returns us to the way the system did not work in the past. It appears we used to have states in control of bags o money to pay for health care, and it never worked. Hence, the AFCA. Repubs seem to love playing plinko with public health care. I can never understand what the hell causes such a lack of empathy and reasonableness. They be craven. Craven I say!

    • Cuberly

How were they buying votes? Did the Koch’s guarantee a shit ton of re-election funds for each holdout?

      • Tor

Would someone please tell me why the fuck the Kochs care about this?

        • Cuberly

Well, not to be a dick, google is your friend…. (smirk)

But, in a nutshell, from interviews and what I’ve read. The Kochs romanticize how they were raised. Yep, they came from utterly extravagant wealth, but their daddy made them break rocks and do common person work so they learned what hard work really was. Flash forward…(they forgot that lesson FAST)

They feel America, as a whole, has become soft and dependent on government, and any further government encroachment infringes on opportunity. The Kochs lack the ability to differentiate between their corpulent obsession with no questions asked access to what ever they want, with a considered approach that measures the effects of their endeavors.

It’s the sad easily disproven notion that opportunity comes from the top down. They’re basically libertarian to such an extreme that they equate their complete success as indicative to the nation’s as a whole.

That’s not how things work, nor has it ever worked that way.

    • I’ve been watching that scroll by… Could be. This is, after all, what happened both of the previous times. House GOP leaders claiming they had enough to pass, then as the time drew new, they didn’t and canceled the vote. Last time was within hours of the scheduled vote.

      • safari
