In a radio interview set to air later today, Trump wonders aloud why the US Civil War took place and suggests that Andrew Jackson could have stopped it if only he’d been in office at the time. And not, you know, already dead. Seriously. The Hill reports:
“I mean had Andrew Jackson been a little bit later you wouldn’t have had the Civil War. He was a very tough person, but he had a big heart,” Trump said during an interview with the Washington Examiner’s Salena Zito.
The president further questioned why the country could not have solved the Civil War. “People don’t realize, you know, the Civil War, if you think about it, why?” Trump said during the edition of “Main Street Meets the Beltway” scheduled to air on SiriusXM.
“People don’t ask that question, but why was there the Civil War? Why could that one not have been worked out?”
Trump thinks Andrew Jackson was alive during the civil war, and also maybe doesn’t know why the civil war happened https://t.co/IrC7b6h43Y

Trump says Andrew Jackson was very angry about the Civil War, people don’t realize. Maybe because he died in 1845 & civil war began in 1861. https://t.co/NEPTx7U40j

1) Jackson did not see the CW. He was very dead.
2) "the Civil War, why?"
3) Holy shit
4) Has Trump ever mentioned slavery? pic.twitter.com/VtdIuTnmDz— Vann R. Newkirk II (@fivefifths) May 1, 2017
Wakes up, sees *Andrew Jackson* trending, then finds out it's because Trump says people don't ask why there was the Civil War. pic.twitter.com/2VDZNn1B0I

Andrew Jackson was a slaveholding plantation owner. He also died 16 years before the Civil War began. This Trump answer is astonishing. https://t.co/wdKNkUOx1t

According to Professor Trump, Andrew Jackson, who died in 1845, was apparently very upset about the Civil War, which began in 1861. pic.twitter.com/6bbu12PYjS
