USDA To Roll Back Public School Nutrition Standards That Were Hallmark Of First Lady Michelle Obama

The Hill reports:

Newly minted Agriculture Secretary Sonny Perdue is expected to unveil a new rule Monday aimed at giving schools more flexibility in meeting federal nutrition standards for school lunches.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) announced Friday that Perdue and Sen. Pat Roberts (R-Kan.) will make the announcement at the Catoctin Elementary School in Leesburg, Va., where they are expected to eat lunch with the students.

Republicans have long been trying to dial back the standards that became a pillar of former first lady Michelle Obama’s initiative to curb childhood obesity in the U.S.

You may recall that during a prolonged drought while he was governor of Georgia, climate change denier Perdue once held a public prayer vigil at which he begged White Jesus to send rain.

I think I’ve told this story here before…but it bears repeating. A few years ago hubs and I decided to take “back roads” back to DC after a trip south. We were in WV, behind a school bus. At the first stop, a fat kid got off and I thought…poor kid…he’s gonna be picked on. The second stop…same thing. After 10 stops…I gave up feeling sorry. It was truly tragic.

      • HZ81

Aw, that’s sad… and scary. If we did trade similar stories before, I apologize for this one again, but I was visiting Ohio years back now and was reading the paper at a coffee shop about how they were one of the most obese states, put down my paper and then could not un-see the problem I didn;t notice all around me, and a lot were kids.

Here’s a chance to ensure kids eat one healthy meal a day, and some kids are lucky to get one, and the GOP fucking stabs them right in the back. They don’t want kids to eat healthier.

      • greenmanTN

Uh-oh, you just tripped over one of my nerd wires, so you have to endure a short lecture. I try to get them over with as quickly as I can.

The food writer MFK Fisher wrote a book about cooking under the rationing strictures of WWII, called “How To Cook A Wolf.” (What do you do when the wolf shows up on your door? Eat it!) Her premise is that even under duress food should also taste good.

This her recipe for “Chinese Consumme.”

4 cups tomato juice or V8.
        1 Tbs butter
1 cup dry white wine, added right before serving.

        That’s it.

But you do have to cut vegetables paper thin and herbs too, carrots, celery, garlic, basil, oregano and cilantro. (Not all of them, just those you like.) Then each diner puts whatever the like in their bowl and the hot consumme is poured on top. The veggies are sliced so thin they cook instantly. Even people at dinner parties like it.

(Cumin/cayenne croutons go great with it but that’s a whole other story.)

        See? It wasn’t THAT bad!

        • Gianni

I’m sure that the cup of wine added right before eating really helps. 🙂

          • greenmanTN

Actually, PA’s GOP-dominated legislature is planning to cut all state funding for armed school guards. Instead, they think that if they allow teachers, secretaries, counselors, and principles (janitors?) to carry loaded weapons, there’s no need for the guards.

  • How dare Michelle Obama want kids to eat more vegetables!

  • Menergy

Well, there goes 8 decades of USDA federal assistance programs in cooperation with state and local education programs in schools to deal with nutrition, nutrition education, assisting lower income families to have their children eat some nutritious meals (if prepared according to standards from USDA’s Food and Nutrition Service which administers the food assistance programs with USDA.

    • I remember what was passing for school lunch in the 00s. Everything was fried except for the pizza. No vegetables except fried potatoes and tater tots. Childhood obesity is a national problem. i remember when i was in elementary school, which was public. wow did they serve us slop. not even as “good” as the photo for USA shows in this list. when i went to private school, all of the sudden i realized: lunch doesn’t have to be torture! some kids actually eat good food!

yall should see the poor kids in my ‘hood. they are so undernourished, it makes you cry. rich people are evil. hurting poor children so you can have an 11th house. this is why you all deserve to go to Hell. like, right now.

rethugs just hate the poor. this means many of them hate themselves, but it also means their leaders aren’t just greedy, aren’t just stupid. they honestly hate the poor. i struggle to understand why. jeebus says “the poor will always be with us.” and they shall. but punishing them, just for being poor? that never makes sense to me. i experience this reality daily, as a poor person, but at least i’m strong enough to fight back a little. many of my neighbors are not. and i can’t help them bc poor. it makes me sad, but also: Revolutionary. i will sing this song until the day comes, and it will. the ultra rich seem to want to die horribly at the hands of the Mob, and i will be first in line to give it to them, when that Day comes.

actually, i have a complicated theory about why this is, but it’s long and boring and probably wrong. but i will say: men with very small penises are very angry, almost all the time. and that’s a shame, cause a small penis is nothing to be ashamed of; in fact it makes sex more interesting, because the smarter ones learn to use their hands and mouth and ass, in very fun ways. doods with big sticks are mostly about “the in out in out.” which is fine, but less complex.

anyway, i think rethugs hate the poor for two reasons. one is that many of the poor are blah colored, and everyone (white) assumes (wrongly) that this means they have bigger dicks. the other reason is because so many rethugs and conservatives come from backgrounds of poverty, and are ashamed, no matter how much money they make. jeebus, of course, doesn’t help any of this and only makes them worse. they know he’s myth and resent those of us who are totally OK with atheism.

I’m convinced this is an underhanded (and back handed) slap at Obama – via his wife – for his recent speech. Trump has already made comment that Obama needs to go away – yet time and again – trump blames bullshit on Obama. Ya know, I suppose it is entirely possible that I don’t know the real Obama – but I’ve seen and heard enough racist shit from trump and his appointed racist dumbasses – starting with Jeff Sessions – that deflection is not effective. Fuck trump. fuck sessions. and fuck sonny perdue.

  • coram nobis

    He wasn’t their first choice.

WASHINGTON–White House sources denied today that they had appointed Dr. Hannibal Lecter to the President’s commission on school lunches. Dr. Lecter, reached at an undisclosed location, said, “Well, they really did ask me. Trouble is, I’ve never been particularly fond of children and had to decline. I’ve got to hang up now, Fox News is coming and I love ham.” Dr. Lecter did recommend a nice Chianti for the White House wine list, however.

Tomatoes are fruit. But I don’t really recommending putting them in fruit salad.

Yes, auto correct and didn’t check before posting sorry. I hope you still got the meaning of what I posted?

        • Mike_in_the_Tundra

Of course we got the meaning. When I was teaching, I found the usage of it’s and its difficult for most students. I did teach first grade, so I’m certain they got it in time. I hope.

        • Tiger Quinn

Of course we did – meaning is not conveyed by spelling, but context.

          • Ginger Snap

Ya know… It might make a difference if you told the Repubs that if the kids don’t get good food as kids, they’ll not make good soldiers when they’re 18.

    They ‘like’ soldiers, don’t they?

Who knows, nothing else is going to motivate them to think of others. Maybe if it’s linked with killing people, they’ll get it.

  • Mike_in_the_Tundra

This administration is trying to undo the Obama administration. History will not deal well with this. I just hope voters will know what is happening. However, most low information voters do will only react to a tax cut.

Yeah. He got that all wrong. Ketchup is a condiment. He was the vegetable.

      • Johnny Wyeknot

Nice chuckle on that one. Remember Nancy? She was so lifelike! Speaking of ketchup, Nixon liked it on cottage cheese. Those republicans!

        • TuuxKabin

Her delivery is priceless, of course.

Nancy was almost life like yes. Ewwwh, yes, I remember the cottitch cheese thing. Put the lid on ever eating cottitch cheese again. Gaghf.

  • This seems like an excellent opportunity for some Leesburg parents to teach their kids about protesting and that the food a private school would avoid giving their students doesn’t magically become more nutritious when served to public school kids. Protests may or may not included the flinging of creamed corn.

  • canoebum

We all know this move is stupid and hateful. The only reason to do this is to send a “we hate you” message to our brilliant former First Lady. It’s disheartening, but remember, there will be a backlash against the whole of the Trump stain on American life. It will come and it will land very hard on those who support this kind of senselessness. We can organize and vote the GOP out of control of the Congress in 2018. The more of this crap these scumbags pull, the madder the centrist and left-leaning electorate of the country becomes. They’ll get theirs, all in due time.
