Marco Rubio Blasts Chechnya’s Violent Crusade Against Gay Men, Calls On US Government To Act [VIDEO]

Chris Johnson reports at the Washington Blade:

Sen. Marco Rubio (R-Fla.) denounced on the Senate floor Monday the ongoing reports of anti-gay arrests and detention in Chechnya, blaming Russian President Vladimir Putin for allowing them to happen.

Rubio, who previously denounced the alleged atrocities on Twitter, called on the U.S. government to “do more to ensure that all people are protected and those who harm them are held responsible.”

“We should use our voice on the global stage to call attention to these horrifying acts and to ensure that they are condemned in an appropriate way, ultimately in the hopes that they will be stopped,” Rubio said.

“There have been reports in the past of similar abuses, although these reports seem to be the most brutal and should provoke anger in all of us,” Rubio said. “We should never, ever tolerate human rights violations against any person for their political views, their religious beliefs, or their sexual orientation.”

Last week UN Ambassador Nikki Haley called for a United Nations investigation. The US State Department has twice called on the Putin regime to act, but the Kremlin has so far dismissed multiple reports of the atrocities. Meanwhile the number of “concentration camps” where gay men are reportedly being detained has climbed from two to six.
RELATED: While we applaud Rubio’s speech, it must also be pointed out that his Senate voting record on LGBT issues has earned him a 0% rating from the Human Rights Campaign.

  • Ragnar Lothbrok

We take support and humanitarian solutions where we can get it.
Still, what does he want ?

    • Darrel Cj

Likely, this is a stick to beat Russia with.

      • Cuberly

        Yup.

      • Gerry Fisher

Plus, it you can position yourself as vastly superior, then you can argue that you’re beyond criticism. (“What are you guys complaining about? At least we aren’t throwing you off buildings!”)

      • BobSF_94117

This is a stick to run for president as a “different kind of Republican” in 2020.

    • safari

An upside down rainbow flag with poorly scrawled handwriting on it to be presented to him at a rally where people chant his name? And taller heels.

    • Oscarlating Wildely

First thing that popped into my head as well. I’m all for support. In Rubio’s case it comes with conditions. What are they?

    • Adam King

He wants the press to call him “moderate” on gay issues while he continues to actually vote the way the Christian bigots think he should. Because he’s a slimemold.

      • ChrisMorley

Please don’t be nasty about beautiful natural slimemolds.

In university, Chris, I studied under a poet, Jill Hoffman, who in one of her poems observed that misery from a distance resembles beauty.

I see you caught them on a good day.

        • Adam King

::Ahem:: From Wikipedia: “Their common name refers to part of some of these organisms’ life cycles where they can appear as gelatinous “slime”.” Ergo, I do believe the metaphor is apt enough for purposes of snarkage. (Because during part of this person’s life cycle he appears as gelatinous slime, but occasionally he transmutes to something resembling blobby dingleberries.)

        • That_Looks_Delicious

          That is a beautiful photo.

    • Cackalaquiano

Yeah call me cynical, but the man spends his entire life demeaning the LGBT community and can’t see that his past rhetoric fosters an environment where extremists are emboldened to do these things.

      • JDS

I trust nothing that he spouts.

    • Stephen Elliot Phillips

      A religious liberty bill probably

    • another_steve

It’s an abstract “Bad Russian” thing to him and his. The fact that it’s queer people who are being targeted is irrelevant to him.

He/they see it as a way to “score points” in the battle against one of Jesus’s primary enemies on Planet Earth.

    • Elagabalus

Especially after today’s news about Flynn, could it actually be that he and people like Jason Chaffetz realize that Trump’s ship is about to sink and it’s time for them to grab a life raft? We can only hope.

    • j.martindale

I think he wants to soften his image and appear more moderate so he can advance on the national stage. And I agree with Ragnar that we NEVER should criticize the humanitarian acts such as these that may actually help our LGBT family in crisis. However, by your acts you shall know them. Let’s hear Rubio talk against “religious liberty” as a license to discriminate against gays. When he does that, and votes to protect gays from discrimination in America, I will give him my full throated praise. Until then, not so much.

    • The Republican House Member from Miami, Ileana Ros-Lehtinen, represents South Beach and Little Havana and is Cuban American. She has an 88% record by the HRC so she has a pro gay rights record. Her district is heavily LGBT and also heavily Jewish- a very liberal voting group. Marco has ties with her. Maybe she influenced him?

      • Randy Left Brooklyn

She never influenced him before. This speech on an empty Senate is just posturing for his run for governor.

        • Robincho

The Senate floor was empty because Iddo Woobio hasn’t ever noticed what its hours of operation are…

        • That makes sense, I did not know he was running for Governor here.

    • Todd20036

He sure didn’t give a crap about the gays at Pulse

      • david fairfield

He has never supported any lgbt cause and has in fact been quite anti-gay. He softens when he needs something, so I wonder what it is this time…

  • Nope. Lip service. Your past actions/votes prove what you think of us. Fuck off.

    • ErikDC

People can change. Rubio is doing what is right here, regardless of past actions.

      • True, you are correct. Let’s see if he does. I’m Doubtful.

      • FAEN

Let’s see how he votes the next time-for or against us.

      • Gerry Fisher

It’s not about change. It’s about this context requiring a different approach in order for things to work out well for him. We’re dealing with sociopaths, remember.

I’ll take it. The enemy of my enemy is my friend.

        • lymis

The enemy of my enemy is not my friend, but he is the enemy of my enemy. I’ll take the help and watch my back.

      • MBear

        Sure, people *can* change.
That, however, is not a person.

      • BobSF_94117

People can change. But if you yourself changed on an issue, would you choose to demonstrate that by making a speech to an empty house, a speech whose sole purpose is to harvest clips for your campaign ads? (Yes, it goes into the record, so it’s there “forever” or until you ask to have it expunged if things go the other way.)

    • lymis

Yes, it’s lip service to any kind of LGBT rights in the US, if that.

But if it’s a choice between lip service to US LGBT rights and a condemnation and call to action for Chechnyan gays, or no lip service to US LGBT rights and no call to cation for Chechnyan gays. I’ll take what he’s doing no, and hold him to account on his domestic record later.

I’m no going to bother reading it. Trash is trash.

        • Falconlights

‘”The Handmaid’s Tale is hardly trash.

          • Oscarlating Wildely

The Handmaid’s Tale is a classic and utterly timely. I recall an article that libraries nationwide have waiting lists for it. Personally, of Atwood’s books, and I’ve read a decent amount of them, it emerges as a layered, conceptually robust work. (Yes, I liked it more than Cat’s Eye, which I know to some is blasphemy.)

          • Ray Taylor

After I watched the video I realized my error and said nevermind.

      • JWC

        Good point

      • SoCalGal20

It’s getting excellent reviews. And there are things in the series that people will think were maybe tweaked for modern events but they were actually in the book.

I will watch it, though not sure when.

    • Oscarlating Wildely

Should be required reading. This interview is practically prophetic about the vile combination of Christianity and government in the US’ history. Remember: Salem Witch trials were Christio-fascism writ large: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VMrz_ivl8jo

      • another_steve

Imo it’s not complicated, OW. For anyone who has insight into what it means to be human, it’s not that complicated.

We’re all frail and we’re all afraid of the dark.

Frailness (as the Philosophical Daoists tell us) comes with having a body.

Fear of the dark — of the unknown and the unseen — is a biological survival instinct. A healthy fear of those things helps keep our species alive.

Enter institutional religion (most, but not all of it), which preys upon our human frailty and our human fears.

A match made in proverbial heaven.

      • Ray Taylor

Oh, so that what it is about, Nevermind.

    • Aware, but not sure I can watch it.

I read the novel long ago, and no matter how bad things got, there was an ending and a future where historians were looking back at the long-fallen Gilead and using Offred’s account as a guide since most written history from that time had been banned by the theocratic regime.

My problem with a TV series is most of them don’t have a narrative arc with a clear goal in mind. And given where this country is now, I’m not sure how much I wish to witness a fictional dystopia that may never have a positive resolution.

      • i’m a patient person, so i wait for a couple of years after a series comes out, and watch it on one of the streaming services in a binge way. i am very selective about series TV, and it better be a gem every ep if you really think i’m going to give it the time.

now, i do enjoy the format. there are some stories that need to be told over the course of a series, and not just a 3hr movie. but i like to read a good long time’s worth of comments on any series before i bother to try it. there’s too much that is good, and i have limited viewing time. hence the picky.

        • McSwagg

And here I thought I was alone in taking that “wait and see” approach. Though I prefer to buy the DVD boxed set after it’s been marked down by at least half of it’s original release price. That way, I can go back and rewatch it multiple times.

    • Dazzer

      Exactly so.

The Republicans are trying to make it look like they’re being tough on Russia – but in reality, this is an easy play by the Republicans. No one cares about the gays, so there’s no ‘fail’ if the US doesn’t achieve anything.

At least they appear to be doing something – without actually achieving anything.

This is in the context of him just yesterday calling Chelsea Clinton fair game for all kinds of criticism, despite the fact Clinton has said she has no interest in running for public office or anything of the sort — and then today scolding the entire Internet for being mean to Ivanka, who is just a private citizen who happens to work for her father’s administration as one of his top advisers, and so she shouldn’t be criticized ever.

    • Cuberly

Ewww….just ewww….glad he’s getting dismantled on twitter for this.

As Joe points out, Rubio’s domestic record on LGBT rights is odious. Rubio also has a future run on a national ticket in mind by doing this. However, this issue needs more visibility than it is getting from everyone right now. I assume there will be banners mentioning Chechnya at Pride Marches at the end of June – right?

OT: I finally got in contact with the recommended neurologist for migraines and got an appointment. For January 2018. How fortunate that migraines aren’t a problem and don’t interfere with your life or anything.

Yeah, I don’t think so. I already have recommendations for other doctors and I’ll call tomorrow!

    • worstcultever

how lucky they could work you in for NEXT JANUARY! what does this doc do on the side – caddy at Mar a Lago or something? 🙁

    • Hy dear hubby suffered from migraines from the time he was 8. He tried every medicine out there with little to no relief, or the meds would work, leaving him feeling loggy headed and muddled. The only thing that helped his was acupuncture.

    • That’s ridiculous. Yeah, other doctors would be good. Hope you can find one who’ll see you way the hell sooner.

When I was trying to get a handle on my migraines in the late 1990s, I actually ended up working with my own physician. She studied up on migraine treatments & detailed diagnoses. We mucked with my diet, my sleep patterns, on or off caffeine, on or off alcohol, checked for allergies (found my seasonal ones *did* tend to kick off cycles of migraines), and tried a number of meds, both preventative and palliative.

I did see a neurologist, and it was useless. My doc did a better job and didn’t make me feel like I had to hurry lest I waste her time.

      • fuzzybits

As Dr.s do some times. It was we who’s time was wasted last week when we had to wait for the urologist an hour and fifteen minutes past our appt. time.

      • Treant

My family doc threw me a palliative (Imitrex) when I said the word “migraine.” Unfortunately, it didn’t work.

My brother-in-law is a neuroscientist, though, so I do have some applicable advice close to home. He suggested beta blockers if the doctor determines they won’t interfere with my arrhythmia. We’ll have to wait for the doctor to find that out, who will probably want to speak to my cardiologist.

        • Imitrex doesn’t work for me either. I guess I was just lucky at the time because when I said it didn’t work, my doc wouldn’t just let it go.

          • Treant

I have to call mine back. She mentioned that once I tried it, come back if it didn’t work.

      https://www.earthworkshealth.com/testimonials/

      • Treant

Why should you be embarrassed by that? Diatomaceous earth is very high in calcium and magnesium, plus silica, which we’re finding we need (and plants need) more than we thought it did!

I’ve done the woo-woo (er, well, no, this has scientific studies) and started supplementation of B vitamins plus magnesium, Co-Q10, and serotonin. All show suppression of headache over the baseline placebo (magnesium being the most effective).

If the doctor would rather I didn’t, I’ll stop them at that point. But all of these are at reasonable levels and either water-soluble (most) or not a problem (Co-Q10).

        • worstcultever

well, you know – internet – just so much BS everywhere, etc – not surprised to see you so proactive and intelligent wrt your condition – and indeed sorry you suffer migraines, I’ve been just plain stupid lucky with my health fortune (so far, but aging and we all know where that leads) – anyway all best wishes for your relief

Hmm,we do need that since they’ve reappeared.

I tend to use boric acid and sugar water, but the diatomaceous earth is OK for slugs on dry, solid surfaces.

That’s the MIRACLE of the amazing private American healthcare system?

American right-wingers are always screaming that you have to go on long waiting lists in a single-payer system.

It’s not usually that big a problem in Canada, especially not for anything urgent.

And it’s certainly nothing like THAT!!

      • Treant

While I’ve suffered them for 35 years now and not known it, now that I do I’d kind of like to get this taken care of. Mine are chronic (daily) but not very intense. Still, they do explain some strangely repelling situations I hesitate to put myself in, like crowds. Noise. Flashing lights.

I pity the 12 year old who just had onset of migraines at high intensity who gets to wait 8 months more than me. I can deal with it if I absolutely have to.

        • As far as I’m concerned, an 8-month wait is basically the specialist saying he doesn’t actually want to see new patients but can’t come right out and say so.

        • billbear1961

          Good luck, T!

I hope you find someone else!

        • peacfulseas inWA

My 1st episode was in the 4th grade. My migraines are with an aura that affected all vision in my left eye in such a way that nausea is almost instantaneous. The teacher questioned whether I was faking until the projectile vomiting began. She never questioned me again. Our bedroom has blackout curtains & shades that totally darken the room, bed covers over my head, no noise not even a ticking clock in the next room some episodes lasting several days. In addition to flashing lights there were food triggers for me primarily aged cheeses , red wines and dairy products if consumed in excess. I was prescribed beta blockers that only marginally helped. I am now down to several a year from several a month but you would not be interested in my regime. Within a couple months on hrt, hormone replacement therapy, I was down to 1 or 2 and able to control them a bit with Imitrex self injections. I still get an aura occasionally, not as intense as before but no headache if I don’t ignore it. Hope you find something that helps.

          • Lars Littlefield

The first time I had an Imitrex injection, I was suddenly fine. Although I still l had a memory of the migraine, the actual pain was gone. It was if a giant space was left in my brain where the pain used to reside. Fortunately, Imitrex has worked perfectly ever since.

          • Oddly enough, those were roughly the same food-triggers for me. Aged cheeses, red wines (esp. Cab), smoked meats.

Heavy perfumes (esp. musky ones). Tobacco smoke. Diesel exhaust. Any heavy pollution (we had some bad wildfires in NM a few years back and when the heavy smoke laid in, it was a horrible week).

Also very loud constant sound. Bright and/or flashing lights.

There is one treatment that reliably works for me…and is among the reasons we’re thinking of moving to the west coast or Canada. In the meantime, I just muddle through…with blackout curtains and all the rest.

          • peacfulseas inWA

I highly recommend Washington state. The treatment you seek is legal here and we have an AG and state who stands up for the community. That and I am only 12 minutes from Canada border when and if all hell breaks out.

I do not know your current location or circumstance but have to suggest that if you can, the doctors at Thomas Jefferson Hospital in Philly have a renowned headache and migraine center. It is arguably one of the finest around and they have helped scores of people. If possible, you may want to check it out.

    • JohnFS

Don’t know if this will help but my Aunt gets migraines. She doesn’t have a problem with the triggers outlined below but she does have a problem with caffeine. She can’t drink coffee or eat chocolate. She can manage tea but only if the tea, (made in a teapot – not in a cup), is diluted. So she has one quarter tea in her cup mixed with three quarters hot water.

    • billbear1961

I was just about to report on this, Mike!

The Trump Regime and the GOP, would-be murderers, would be in violation of INTERNATIONAL LAW!!

Apparently repealing Obamacare could violate international law

We’ve already seen that repealing Obamacare is politically perilous. Now there’s a new complication: It may also violate international law.

The United Nations has contacted the Trump administration as part of an investigation into whether repealing the Affordable Care Act without an adequate substitute for the millions who would lose health coverage would be a violation of several international conventions that bind the United States. It turns out that the notion that “health care is a right” is more than just a Democratic talking point.

A confidential, five-page “urgent appeal” from the Office of the U.N. High Commissioner on Human Rights in Geneva, sent to the Trump administration, cautions that the repeal of the Affordable Care Act could put the United States at odds with its international obligations. The Feb. 2 memo, which I obtained Tuesday, was sent to the State Department and expresses “serious concern” about the prospective loss of health coverage for almost 30 million people, which could violate “the right to social security of the people in the United States.”

The letter urges that “all necessary interim measures be taken to prevent the alleged violations” and asks that, if the “allegations” proved correct, there be “adequate measure to prevent their occurrence as well as to guarantee the accountability of any person responsible.”

OHCHR requested that copies of the letter be shared with majority and minority leadership in both chambers of Congress and proposed that “the wider public should be alerted to the potential implications of the above-mentioned allegations.”

Apparently that didn’t happen. House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi’s office and Senate Minority Leader Charles E. Schumer’s office said they didn’t receive the letter, and officials in House Speaker Paul D. Ryan’s and Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell’s offices said Tuesday that they were unaware of it. The letter did make its way to the Department of Health and Human Services, where an employee leaked it to congressional Democratic leadership. A State Department spokesman said my inquiry was “the first I’m hearing of this.”

A spokesman for the U.N.’s human rights office in Geneva confirmed the authenticity of the letter, which was sent by Dainius Puras, a Lithuanian doctor who serves the United Nations under the absurdly long title “Special Rapporteur on the right of everyone to the enjoyment of the highest attainable standard of physical and mental health.”

      ……………………………………………………….

“ . . . there is a strong presumption that retrogressive measures taken in relation to the right to health are not permissible.”

      ………………………………………………………

Those attempting to deny health care to tens of millions of Americans would hurt their own constituents in a way that falls short of the standards we hold for ourselves and other countries.

. . . Puras writes that Article 25 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights “establishes everyone’s right to a standard of living adequate for the health and well-being, including food, medical care and necessary social services.” He notes that Article 5(e) of the International Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Racial Discrimination, ratified by the United States in 1994, calls on states to “guarantee the right of everyone,” including “the rights to public health, medical care, social security and social services” without regard to race or color.

The special rapporteur also cites Article 12 of the International Covenant on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights, under which states have “the core obligation to ensure the right of access to health facilities, goods and services on a non-discriminatory basis, especially for vulnerable or marginalized groups.” The agreement was signed but not ratified by the United States, which is still “obliged to refrain from acts that would defeat the covenant’s object or purpose, in conformity with Article 18 of the Vienna Convention on the Law of Treaties.”

The Trump administration has shown its contempt for such considerations by failing to pass along the U.N. letter to congressional leaders. But you don’t have to care about international law to know that the essence of the OHCHR criticism is true: Taking away health coverage from millions without an adequate replacement is abject cruelty.

If you use Firefox try an add-on called Download Helper. You can capture any streaming video. I’ve been using it for several years and it works really well. I know Macs are supposed to be less likely to be affected by viruses and malware, but I still take cautions. I limit my use of Safari to very trusted sites such as my credit union, credit card companies, and travel companies like Delta, Hilton, Marriott, etc. For everything else I use Firefox. Since OSX is really Unix under the pretty cover it’s unlikely a malicious website visited via Firefox could access or intercept any data used by Safari.

Somewhere around the 9th grade I kind of remember hearing about three separate, but equal, branches of government. I admit I was usually staring at the cute boy sitting in the next row, but I was still mostly paying attention to the teacher. I must have stayed home sick the day that it was explained that the Executive Branch is more equal than the Legislative and Judicial branches.

      • Adam King

The cute boy was equal. Too bad he was separate.

I really wish the GOP would stop trying to tear down the judicial branch.

      • Max_1

        Majorities of State… GOP
        US House… GOP
        US Congress… GOP
        The White House… GOP

Essentially the Democratic Party is impotent right now. So according to GOP mind think, they’re “winning”. The only other part of our Tripartite Governance to go after and “win” IS the Judiciary.
… ‘Cause you can’t have them Librul Judges makin’ laws. /s

safari, the GOP voting base is being led around ny the nose ring to the slaughter house and for that they say, “Moar”.

        • Ninja0980

Sad to say, they’ve won the judiciary as well.
To put it bluntly, you want to see an area Democrats have truly failed at, the judicial branch is it.

Winning and stealing are two different things…

          • Ninja0980

Half of the lower court vacancies that Trump will get to fill opened up under a Senate controlled by Democrats that allowed Republicans to use certain tricks to block them for the sake of tradition and harmony, most noticeably the blue slip.
The blue slips Republicans will do away with the minute Democrats use them are the some ones Republicans used to block certain vacancies for four years or more, with nary a peep from Democrats.

          • Max_1

Well, they sure didn’t “win” the Supreme Court seat…

The Democratic Party needs to understand one thing:
Playing nice in order to “get along” only invites trouble.

You know that saying of Mrs. Obama’s:
When they go low, you go high…
She never said to agree that low is good enough and to leave it there.

          • Ninja0980

Democrats should have learned their lesson after how Bill Clinton was treated.
They didn’t and I fear they will do the same with the next Democratic president.

      • Ninja0980

They won’t once they fill the 120 judicial vacancies with far right hacks.

Rubio also sharply criticized Rex Tillerson for being too pro-Russia during the Senate SOS confirmation hearings.

Mr. Rubio, violence against gays comes in many forms. And believe me, you are very guilty.

  • Orly

While we applaud Rubio’s speech, it must
also be pointed out that his Senate voting record on LGBT issues has
earned him a 0% rating from the Human Rights Campaign.

Like most of these tools, he probably just recently became aware of a close friend or family member who turned out to be LGBT.
