Trump Claims DREAMers Should “Rest Easy”

The Associated Press reports:

President Donald Trump says young immigrants shielded from deportation — often referred to as “dreamers” — should “rest easy” about his immigration policies. In an interview with The Associated Press, Trump says he is “not after the dreamers, we are after the criminals.” He says “that is our policy.”

President Barack Obama changed enforcement priorities to protect many young people brought to the country illegally as children from deportation. Attorneys say 23-year-old Juan Manuel Montes was recently deported to Mexico despite having qualified for deferred deportation. Montes sued Tuesday for access to records on his deportation. Trump says Montes’ case is “a little different than the Dreamer case,” though he did not specify why.

Montes has a misdemeanor arrest record for shoplifting and driving without a license.

  • FFS, he’s not even trying to make his baldfaced lies plausible anymore.

THEY ARE ALREADY BEING ARRESTED AND DEPORTED. In at least one case, illegally because his status was still valid. And in another case a woman was ordered to show up for deportation, despite the fact HER status was also still valid.

    • Stogiebear

ICE is even detaining American citizens it decides to deem illegal:

And your example there is yet another instance/alternative.

Don’t trust a word he says – Dreamers – contact a lawyer and make plans for what to do if ICE/CBP nab you. I know NY state will provide lawyers to any detainees that need them and some sanctuary cities like Seattle are trying to do the same thing.

  • BobSF_94117

Yeah, he wants them to rest easy on a bunk in a private-prison detention center.

  • Why does everything 45 does sound like an abuser tactic? Trying to tell Dreamers that their fears are imaginary while actively destroying their lives. We see the fucking red flags, Trump.

    • I mean seriously, everything he does. From threatening PBS because he “cares” about our future, to saying he’s protecting women by stripping away their reproductive rights. It’s like he’s an abusive husband, and those of us who didn’t vote for him can’t find a way out of this relationship.

          • TuuxKabin

That, I don’t know. But one of my wake up in the middle of the night dread is the nationalization of the cities’ police force, sheriff’s department and law officers, there will be an order to deputize civilians, i.e. red necks with guns, to take the law into their own hands. Bottom line, I am afraid there will be disappeared from many places. As there were in Argentina. Brazil. Chile and other struggling democracies. It’s happened before. In other democracies.

  • another_steve

The proof will be in the pudding.

If from here on out, only those undocumented immigrants convicted of crimes are deported, Trump will have a major policy success on his hands.

I’m pretty certain (I could be wrong but am pretty certain) that the vast majority of Americans will not object to the deportation of undocumented immigrants who are convicted of crimes.

    • Gustav2

All undocumented immigrants who come to the US or overstay their visa and those work in the US are committing a crime. They will take them court and it is over.

      • another_steve

I wouldn’t want to be in charge of a public relations campaign that attempted to convince the average American that undocumented immigrants who have been convicted of a crime should be permitted to remain in the U.S.

        • Gustav2

The crime is just being here.

          • another_steve

Well, the sexual predator seems to now be articulating a more nuanced policy re deportation, as far as the Dreamers go.

We’ll see if it’s for real or whether it’s just more Trump bullshit.

          • FAEN

It’s clear he’s in over his head and has been for a long while. I hope he understands that this isn’t an issue you can fix with deportation. For one there isn’t enough money, for another it would clog the courts.

We have an antiquated immigration system and until we have CIR this BS will continue.

If we get rid of undocumented labor the hard right don’t realize the affect that would have on the entire country. It’s better to have a system where we legalize the undocumented and create a new system. Just my two cents.

          • another_steve

“It’s better to have a system where we legalize the undocumented and create a new system.”

You and I are probably not that far apart on this, FAEN.

I consider myself a centrist on immigration matters. I believe a sovereign nation has a right to require and ensure orderly entry across its borders. I’m not for open borders.

I’m also in favor of strict enforcement of existing immigration law, with enhancements/improvements as appropriate. If you’re admitted to the U.S. on a temporary basis and your permitted stay in this country has elapsed and there’s no legal basis for you remaining in the country, you must leave.

We’ve fucked up on this for such a long long time that now we have the issue of how to deal with the many millions of undocumented immigrants who are already here, many since early childhood.

I’m for a “Pathway to Legal Status” for those already here, but only in conjunction with strict enforcement — here on out — of existing immigration law (legislatively tweaked and cleaned up as appropriate).

I suspect another 50 JMG readers will block me for having expressed these centrist views of mine, but I don’t give a shit.

You’re a smart and articulate commenter here, FAEN, and I always enjoy our exchanges.

          • canoebum

There is still no excuse for ICE officers to act like the fucking Gestapo. Legal, illegal, I don’t care. Anyone present in this country has Due Process Rights, something ICE doesn’t seem to understand. Grabbing a documented Dreamer without a wallet off the street, who also happened to suffer some cognitive deficiency, and denying him the opportunity to prove his legal status before shoving him across the border, is un-American. We as a society shouldn’t stand for it.

          • another_steve

            Hear ya.

            It’s very complicated, canoebum.

          • FAEN

I always enjoy our exchanges as well. It’s good to be able to debate.

The new system, I hope is created, should reflect where we are as a country and end the antiquated system that encourages undocumented immigration IMHO. If you come from a high volume country you could be stuck in the system for 20-25 years! That’s unacceptable and ridiculous in this day and age. Too many who are looking for a better life can’t wait that long. And I think you’ll agree 20-25 years just to be able to move here is insane.

I had some distant relatives that both had Masters degrees and put their paper work in Jan of 1971. They didn’t get their residency until the summer of 1991! And then their eldest child had to wait an additional few years since she had turned 21.

            Surely we can do better.

          • canoebum

Whatever he says, I’d believe the opposite.

      • FAEN

        A little empathy maybe?

        • Gustav2

I’m trying to explain the Republican “only criminals” policy is BS because they all have broken the law by being in the country undocumented.

It is not a kinder gentler policy.

          • FAEN

Understood. However(and I could be wrong)I believe it is a civil offense entering the US without inspection.

          • Acronym Jim

            Exactly, it’s a catch-22 for undocumented immigrants.

          • canoebum

As I understand it, it’s not actually a crime, but rather a civil violation. It is illegal to cross the border or enter the country without proper notice to Customs and Border officials. But being present in the country per se, without authorization, is not a criminal act.

A little anecdote about customs. Years ago I worked for a well-known family from the Mid-East. They had planes…and helicopters and lots of residences, like that. On one occasion their pilot notified customs that they would be landing an international flight (jet capacity 100+ passengers), if it had all the seats) at one airport, but instead, they landed elsewhere, at an airport where there were no customs officials to meet the plane. I don’t know who or what was on that plane, nor does anyone else except the people who operated it. The next day I got a call at my office from customs. “Where are they? They weren’t there to meet our guy.” I told them they landed at another airport. About a week later I got a bill from the government for the penalty due for landing a plane with no one from customs to meet it. I cut a check and mailed it off. Nothing else was ever said. The fine? $1000.

    • FAEN

I understand violent crimes and the like but what if they get a parking ticket? Or something else that’s minor? That can be used to deport them because to Cheeto and his racist ilk those are ‘crimes’.

      • another_steve

Good point. And how will they/can they delineate “minor crimes” from “major crimes” in a way that will satisfy the Republican base?

        Tricky.

        Very tricky.

        • FAEN

I’m not sure it is. A parking ticket and minor crimes don’t harm others and should not be a way to get rid of people, the vast vast majority of whom have been here for 10 + years, have homes, businesses, children, LIVES and contribute to the economy.

Violent offenders I totally get should not be here.

      • Actually, I’ve been seeing reports such that non-DREAMER recipients are being deported solely for the crime of being in the U.S. w/out documentation. THAT is being labeled their qualifying crime.

        • FAEN

That’s not who we are as a nation. Even the majority of republicans want CIR.

        • Gustav2

See, they are only deporting criminals!

(that is SNARK before I get beat up)

    • BobSF_94117

His “major policy success” will be the continuation of the Obama policies he criticized?

      • another_steve

Yes. His base is mentally vacant.

“The Lincoln Park Presbyterian Church is literally throwing open its doors to undocumented immigrants. The church, at 600 W. Fullerton Parkway, has almost completed the process of clearing an attic space that had been used for storage and converting it into a two-room apartment that could welcome a family of
undocumented immigrants facing deportation later this year.”

Hiding people in attics to protect them from being discovered and dragged away by government goons – when has that happened before? I weep for how stupid much of America has become and oblivious to the evil that is among us.

I don’t think Trump cares one way or another, and his campaign promises were so vague that it could be argued that they didn’t target DREAMers specifically. It doesn’t really matter, though, because
    – His supporters believe he wants to deport anyone that’s brown;
    – Republicans in Congress have explicitly stated they don’t give a fuck about them;
    – ICE is now overzealous to deport brown people;
    – Trump doesn’t really know what’s going on or how to run the government even if he meant it.

Treasury denies Exxon waiver from Russian sanctions

The Trump administration said Friday that it would not grant a waiver from Russian sanctions to Exxon Mobil or any other energy companies.

The Treasury Department announcement follows reports that Exxon had been seeking such a waiver to drill in the Black Sea. It comes as the FBI and congressional intelligence committees investigate Russian hacking aimed at disrupting the last election and potential contact with members of President Donald Trump’s campaign.
