Obama To Give First Post-White House Speech

The Chicago Tribune reports:

Former President Barack Obama will return to Chicago on Monday to speak to young people at the University of Chicago, in what will be his first speech since leaving the White House. Obama and young leaders will hold a conversation on civic engagement and discuss community organizing, his office announced Friday.

Hundreds of people are expected to attend, chosen from area universities that were given tickets for distribution, said Kevin Lewis, a spokesman for the former president. About six young people will appear on stage with him for the discussion, Lewis said.

“This event is part of President Obama’s post-presidency goal to encourage and support the next generation of leaders driven by strengthening communities around the country and the world,” an advisory said.

More from the New York Times:

Even as he witnesses President Trump’s relentless and chaotic assault on his legacy, Mr. Obama remains stubbornly committed to the idea that there is only one president at a time. Those closest to him say the former president does not intend to confront Mr. Trump directly on immigration, health care, foreign policy or the environment during any of his events.

Aides have rejected the idea that Mr. Obama should actively wage a public feud against Mr. Trump, with whom he has not spoken since the inauguration. They believe that such a fight would give the current president the high-profile political foil he wants to further energize his conservative supporters.

    WE MISS YOU! COME BACK!

  • kcken

Every time I see a picture of the Obamas, I’m reminded of just how far down the shithole this country is with the Trump family running things.

    COME BACK!!!

  • WitlessProtection

    He’s right though.

    • David L. Caster

That to give Trump and his supporters a target would be a bad idea, yes, it would. Better to remain classy and focus on the responsibilities of good citizenship and stewardship of democracy. That would be the side of Obama which would be the most effective.

    • BobSF_94117

No he’s not. Former presidents have spoken in general terms about the world, about progress, about rich countries aiding poorer countries, about international cooperation.

That Trump repudiates 75 years of American policy and American history is no reason for Obama to clam up about what this country stands for and what is the ONLY path forward for the world.

  • SunsetGay

Teabagistan will claim that this is part of his secret coup and that he is running a shadow government.

Lol! Yeah… That would be great.

  • david fairfield

I can’t imagine what he’ll say. “So, how’s this working out for you, motherfuckers?”

  • Boreal
  • Lars Littlefield

    I miss him.

  • Paula

It will be a great speech. For the first 10 minutes, he will just stand there and laugh.

    • Bj Lincoln

He has a great smile and laugh. Great humor and will laugh at himself. I really miss him.

  • bkmn

Not talking about Trump will really bug the hell out of the orange shitgibbon.

    • His Holy Sh1t the Donald TRAMP

      YUP YUP YUP.
Nothing hurts orange more than ignoring him

    • Acronym Jim

Not only that, but Trump and his cronies and criminals are doing more to energize Obama’s base than anybody else.

      Why mess with that?

  • skyweaver

“Hundreds of people are expected to attend”
My first thought when I saw the headline is “how long does it take to drive to Chicago from where I live.” By way of saying this is going to attract people like they are not even prepared for. Way more than students are going to show up.

    • Tom G

I just want to know where I can stand to get a glympse of this great man.

  • FAEN

No matter what he says or doesn’t say President Obama will be a lightening rod for the right.

    • Boreal

I’m counting on it and hoping he will be more visible as time goes on.

      • FAEN

I want him to be visible but not to the point where it motivates more right wing crazies to go to the polls.

We must come close or take back the House or Senate. And prevent Cheeto from a 2020 win.

    • Derrick Johns

Interesting comment, FAEN. Yeah, both Obama and Clinton.

  • bkmn
    • FAEN

      Love that movie.

      • Paula

What movie is that? It looks like a movie a Gay man would recognize, more so than a Lesbian. 😀😀😀

          ‘Singing In the Rain’

        • FAEN

          Singing in the rain 😉

        • FAEN

And that is a young Debbie Reynolds btw 😀

    • JCF

Miss her, as well as Obama.

  • Butch

A president who speaks in full and coherent sentences. It seems like a lifetime ago already.

    • Stogiebear

Yet, it has only been 90 days.

      • BlueberriesForMe

Sometimes it feels like it’s been 90 years.

  • Ragnar Lothbrok

I hope he lays out a comprehensive line for Impeachment.
    WE NEED some HOPE!

  • JW Swift

    “Community organizing (organizer)”

That’s become almost as big a slur from the right as “liberal”. We really need to take that one back.

    • Gerry Fisher

Yep. Community organizing is macro social work.

  • Rex

As far as I’m concerned President Obama is the President, Trump is just the SCROTUS.

  • PickyPecker
  • Blake Mason

Don’t hurt ’em, Barry. Ease ’em into it.

    • Xiao Ai: The Social Gadfly

Slap them in the face. They’re overdue.

  • Ninja0980

Can we have him back yet?

  • billbear1961

“Aides have rejected the idea that Mr. Obama should actively wage a public feud against Mr. Trump, with whom he has not spoken since the inauguration. They believe that such a fight would give the current president the high-profile political foil he wants to further energize his conservative supporters.”

It is EXACTLY what Trump LONGS for!

Without a manufactured enemy to RAIL AT, Trump is totally LOST.

    • Chucktech

As much as I would take such visceral delight in seeing Obama absolutely incinerate Trump, it really would play into the hands of the Deplorables, Republican traitors and stupid people. You know, Trump’s base.

      • billbear1961

Still, I wish SOME Democrats–in the House, in the Senate, in governors’ mansions–would speak out MUCH more vehemently and much more OFTEN than they are, Chuck, instead of leaving most of the battle to the grassroots!

Have they heard of LEADERSHIP? Do they know what it IS?!

        I wish they’d PROVE it!!

  • BobSF_94117

Obviously he gets to pick what he says and doesn’t say, but it’s a damn shame he’s not willing to stand up and speak out about the Western ideals of democracy and civil society.

    • Natty Enquirer

Barry doesn’t need to get into the mud pit with Trump to talk about democracy and civil society. Civility is better taught by example than by complaint.

    • Curieux Bleu

He is going to speak about democracy and civil society, but not in a direct dialogue with Trump with whom no dialogue is possible. Obama keeps his full dignity while Trump continues to spin all the gears, spluttering and shredding his own credibility ever downward.

It is up to ALL OF US to provide DAILY RESISTANCE, to rally, to march, to make signs, to petition, to hold Trumps Assholes accountable at every turn, and to fund progressive candidates for every elected job from Dog-Catcher and on up and retake all those Red State administrations over the next few years, or at least enough of them to put the GOP LIES to bed, at least for the majority of voting Americans. We have to challenge racism wherever it appears, challenge misogyny wherever, challenge cruelty, challenge injustice, challenge homophobia and intolerance wherever we find out.

We need to call out the haters at every turn, but in a more civil and less violent manner. I think Obama called it the Audacity of Hope.

      • Bj Lincoln

        Very well put. Thanks.

  • worstcultever

Gods, that photo up top just makes me want to cry.

  • Bj Lincoln

Obama will handle himself and topics with the same class and dignity he has always had. He will speak in complete sentences and complete thoughts that will be refreshing after 100 days of Drumpf. Just that will be enough to show the difference between the 2. No need to get into a fight. Besides, Obama would win in the first 5 seconds, hands down. I would probably cry the whole way through because I miss him so much.

  • I agree that a direct attack from Obama on Trump would actually elevate Trump in the eyes of conservatives. Focusing on energizing and organizing the next generation of political candidates, and articulating a unifying message and goals, would serve far more good, and is something that Obama would likely feel more comfortable doing.

  • goofy_joe

It’s wise for him not to speak out, just as it has been for all former Presidents right after they leave office. Obama speaking out now would possibly push people further into Trump’s camp, and hurt future down ballot elections for Democrats in critical states.

I’m really hoping the full speech is posted on YouTube or Vimeo.

It might be too controversial for DisneyTube/YouTube.
