Leader Of California Secession Movement Withdraws Referendum Petition Because He’s Moving To Russia

This is the guy who used to work for NOM. Business Insider reports:

The leader of California separatist group Yes California announced in a 1,600-word statement on Monday that he “intends to make Russia” his “new home” and is therefore withdrawing his petition for a “Calexit” referendum.

Louis Marinelli, who has spearheaded the Calexit campaign since 2015, set up a makeshift embassy in Moscow in December in partnership with far-right Russian nationalists who enjoy Kremlin support while promoting secessionist movements in Europe.

“I have found in Russia a new happiness, a life without the albatross of frustration and resentment towards ones’ homeland, and a future detached from the partisan divisions and animosity that has thus far engulfed my entire adult life,” Marinelli wrote on Monday.

A second secessionist group, the California Nationalist Party, remains active.

    Bye-Bye. You won’t be missed.

    • Guest

Other articles yesterday stated his wife was from there and that was a reason too.

      • Reality.Bites

This scenario worked out so well for Lee Harvey Oswald.

      • Wynter Marie Starr

Perhaps he shouldn’t make it about anything else then. But, it certainly is a better reason.

  • olandp

So, Louis is mentally ill? Who knew!

  • Texndoc

May he find all the happiness as the young idiots who thought N Korea would be fun to live in too.

  • Pollos Hermanos

Louis Marinelli was NOM’s bus driver if I remember correctly. He was also one of the most ham handed grifters I’d ever seen.

  • ceeenbee

    I’m sure he’ll be very happy 😊.

    • Todd20036

He can swap stories with Snowden

  • Todd20036

Wonder if he was a Putin plant. Without California, America would be guaranteed a GOP president for the next century.

    • Blackfork

Not a Putin plant, but certainly a Russian sympathizer likely turned by Russian spies here, who are everywhere. The Russians are behind this Calexit shit. And, if he hasn’t been turned, this creep will come screaming back to the US after a short period of time.

      • ben

I think this is probably one circumstance where the Russia connection is a coincidence. Years and years ago – before even the NOM involvement – he spent a bunch of time in Russia as an English-language instructor. It’s where he met his wife. He was campaigning HARD for Bernie in CA, and when Trump won I think made the decision to move to Russia. He and his wife now live in a town where most of her family is. He’s a weirdo guy – just read his self-published book! – but in this case I think the Russian connection just isn’t there.

        • Gustav2

What? You mean someone with connections to NOM is doing something just for the publicity?

          • ColdCountry

Do you know his history with NOM? He was their bus driver, and he turned on them. Hard. Became an LGBT supporter. Thus I find the move a bit odd, but if, as Ben noted, he had previously had good experiences there, I can see it. Disillusionment is tough, and he suffered a big hit of it when he discovered just how hateful and toxic NOM was. I can sort of see Donnie as the last straw, though I do think Russia is an odd choice. But it’s not really up to me to judge.

Ot:// the past three months have given me little hope that we will have a huge wave election in 18.
The national leaders are posturing for 2020. There has been no organized resistance against trump or his nominees.
    Keith Ellison is criticizing Obama.
We’re having stupid arguments about progressive purity tests for candidates in deep red states.
There is still a huge pragmatic/idealist split between establishment dems and “revolutionists”
All the movement has been from people protesting in the street and in townhalls.

    • Ninja0980

Sad to say but you’re right.
Our rights are being destroyed slowly but surely and Bernie and his bots are more concerned with waging war on Democrats then fighting against Trump and Republicans.
      A party divided can’t stand.

      • sword

Bernie and the head of the DNC appeared on a news channel where Bernie again declared he was an ‘independent not a Democrat’.

        • Todd20036

He was never a democrat. Merely an opportunist. And his followers are just a cult.
There’s a reason I block them. I’ve no more tolerance for them.

          • Treant

Ditto. I blocked another one yesterday…Beaverass? Something like that. He’s both a cultist and a conspiracy theorist.

      • The_Wretched

Evidence please. I’m sure your daily on-going crusade to dredge up “Bernie and his bots” help with the infighting to the left of Bob Dole.

    • BobSF_94117

Keith Ellison is criticizing Obama for acting as though partisan politics were beneath him. In retrospect, is there any question Ellison is wrong?

Obama can take some heat, can take some responsibility. His record isn’t so fragile we have to pretend he was perfect.

      • Todd20036

He wasn’t perfect, but the perfect candidate never gets elected.
Too bad some people never realize that.

        • Acronym Jim

And a perfect candidate will NEVER exist. Too bad some people never realize that.

      • thom

Yes, there is some question to that. With moderation and attempts to compromise, Obama achieved more than any president in recent memory. This election isn’t Obamas fault. I know he’s not perfect but was certainly better than a run of the mill partisan hack.

And really, there is no excuse for Sanders response to Ossoff. Truth is, the democratic/liberal/progressive movement in america is in deep trouble

    • William

And theTexas Democratic Party is still flopping around like a headless chicken.

    • That_Looks_Delicious

The base is definitely far out ahead of the politicians on the Democratic side now nationally. What little the Democrats can do in Washington right now, they are doing (except maybe for Manchin and sometimes Heitkamp). I’m pretty happy with what the Dems have been doing on the state and local levels on the west coast, but there again, there are limits to what California or OR or WA can do against the federal government.

      • thom

Very true. So far, i think Gillibrand is aligning herself with the voters better than most

  • Tawreos

After working for NOM I would have to guess that the homophobia in Russia feels good to him.

  • HeyYouKidsGetOffMyLawn
  • DaddyRay

Makes sense, he has been on the Russian payroll for years

    • ColdCountry

I’m curious as to why you say that? I haven’t been following him since shortly after he turned on NOM, but hadn’t heard anything like that.

  • Ginger Snap

Give up your citizenship and then I’ll believe how much you resent your country.

  • Halou

The trophy wants to stay on the shelf?

  • BobSF_94117

“I have found in Russia a new happiness, a life without the albatross of

    HAVE !!!!! H A V E !!!!!

Anyway, maybe this could be a trend. For nearly three decades, Russia has been shipping us mail-order brides, now we could return the favor and send them our constipated right-wingers. I realize it isn’t fair, but, well, who cares…

    • Lumpy Gaga

      One country’s basement-dweller is another’s mail-order bride.

    • in Russia, Big Women like You!

    • ColdCountry

I wouldn’t call him a right-winger. When he found out what NOM was really all about, he turned on them hard.

    • Judas Peckerwood

Sounds like a hostage statement read at gunpoint.

    • Miji

I guess if you’re happier without any choices and want one party in control that just poisons or ignores dissenters, that’s one way of eliminating “partisan divisions” if they stress you out.
Also I think it’s a fair enough trade. Not to make sweeping generalizations, but I’ve gotten a bitchy racist right-winger vibe from a lot of Russians, it might pretty much be a trade in kind.

  • greenmanTN

I suppose it’s easier than sending Russia to him.

But congratulations on your well deserved obscurity.

  • sword

News reports claim that he has been living in Siberia while promoting secession. It has also been reported that the Kremlin has set up a think tank into thinking up as many ways as possible to politically destroy the US.

    • DaddyRay

They have it so easy – they just have to target gullible Trump voters and Fox viewers with fear tactics and racism

      • MBear

Done. Next step? Or just skip to profit?

  • mikeinftl

He is doing a personal Calexit. Buh bye.

  • madknits

Special Snowflake needs a “safe space.”

  • Chris Gardner

It’s surprising to me how many times I have come across Trump supporters who also think Putin is a great leader and acts as if the Russian collaboration to swing the election was a good thing. I guess Trump has replaced Reagan as their pseudo-deity figure because Reagan would shit his pants if he thought Republicans were cozying up with Russians.

    • Tor

He probably shat his pants daily, anyway.

    • Nowhereman

They claim to love freedom but in reality they want a dictator.

    • Boy Elvis

The days of “evil empire” invective do seem far behind us now. I know some conservatives who are now OK with Russia because they’re no longer the Soviet Union, the great boogieman of the baby boomer generation. To them communism was the problem, not the Russian political elite. To some of these folks Russia is just our beaten enemy, seeing as Reagan “won” the cold war. These folks seem to have no conception that the current incarnation of Russia is just as bad, if not worse, than the Soviet Union ever was.

      • Franciscan

To some, I suppose, Russia, no longer “godless” but under the sway of a right-wing branch of Christianity, can be their friend. The other reason this may be so is that our right wing now has found a new object of hatred in Islam. The evil empire is replaced by the evil religion.

  • lymis

    So, he’s now an immigrant.

Why do I suspect that he was entirely opposed to foreigners coming to America and becoming citizens because they felt they’d found a home?

No loss. But now he can shut up about US politics.

  • SilasMarner

    Buh bye Felicia.

  • narutomania

Perhaps his decision to relocate might inspire others … like Tony Perkins and Brian Brown and Maggie Gallagher and Peter LaBarbera. And even Phyllis Schlafly (she might be dead but I know she’s still walking around).

    • JaniceInToronto

They could exhume Schlafly, put her in a bag and send her to the Kremlin.

      • William

        “Delivery for Mr Putin.”

  • pgarayt

Maybe he’ll be able to finally get a date, there.

    • Tread

He already bought his mail order bride.

  • William

Putin’s staff must have discovered that there is no basis for secession in the US Constitution. His money is better spent trying to get Marine LePen elected in France.

  • Achilles Tsakiridis

  • 2patricius2

Instead of continuing with his campaign to get California to secede, he decided to just secede himself. Good riddance. .

  • BumbaFromWakumba

To be fair, after left NOM, he became a same-sex marriage supporter (so he said). http://www.thedailybeast.com/articles/2011/04/13/anti-gay-marriage-crusader-louis-marinelli-on-his-conversion.html

    • The_Wretched

      So he’s a wishy-washy idiot.

    • KarenAtFOH

He better keep quiet about it over there.

  • Tor

From NOM bus driver to leader of a political movement. How does one do that?

    • MBear

      Sucking dick

  • Mrs. Councillor Nugent

Asshole’s holding the flag wrong: Stars field needs to be at upper left when flag displayed/hung vertically, so it’s turn and flip!

Good luck and good riddance Be sure once you get there burn your passport and denounce the US. Life here will be better without you. It’s gonna be funny within a year you crying to come back to the US

  • Cuberly
  • Elsewhere1010

I wish it surprised me, but at this point I don’t think even Trump himself seeking asylum in Moscow would provoke in big reaction. More like an ached eyebrow and a query about why he had to wait so long, as though his work in the U.S. hadn’t been finished.

  • Lakeview Bob

The sad part is he will be back after realizing what true oppression is. Silly stupid man.

  • ETownCanuck
  • Nowhereman

So in other words, he wants to live somewhere with a totalitarian government, no choices at all, and an iron-fisted, pint-sized dictator. I’ll bet that most of the far right would feel right at home in Russia. They should apply for citizenship there. As long as they are white, male, straight and christian of course. It’s a teabagger’s heaven.

  • Paul David

Why do these dipshits always move to Russia?

Oh, and the United States is like a catholic marriage: there’s no such thing as divorce.

  • JDS

Don’t let the door hit you in the ass on the way out. Enjoy your “freedoms” in Россия.

  • m_lp_ql_m

Calexit actually has a better chance of succeeding now that this asshole is gone.

  • TheManicMechanic

    Hope ya choke on borscht.

  • andrew

In earlier generations it was some on the extreme left who saw Russia as Eden. Now it’s extremists on the right. Extremists sure don’t have much of a grasp on reality. Good bye Marinelli, we will attempt to struggle on without the likes of you.

    • KarenAtFOH

Doesn’t that flip just boggle the mind? At least it does for us of a certain age.

      • andrew

What is it about authoritarian Russia; be it Communism of the 20th century or Fascism of the 21st century that American extremists find attractive?

  • abqdan

Russia’s not a bad place to live for rich white straight guys who don’t mind totalitarian states…

  • KarenAtFOH

A toast to you sir, on your successful Marinelliexit campaign!

  • KarenAtFOH

Надеюсь, вам понравится ваш долбаный Путин.

  • Gerry Fisher

I look forward to this torrid love affair between far right activists and Russia to burn and come crashing down. “Oh, shoot! I didn’t realize it was such a DUMP!”

  • Orly

Now if we can just get all the other nutcases like him to follow suit.

  • JCF

Dosvedanya! No American—much less Californian—will miss you!
