UN Ambassador Nikki Haley Demands Investigation Into Murders And Torture Of Gay Men By Chechen Police

Via press release:

We continue to be disturbed by reports of kidnapping, torture, and murder of people in Chechnya based on their sexual orientation and those persecuted by association. If true, this violation of human rights cannot be ignored – Chechen authorities must immediately investigate these allegations, hold anyone involved accountable, and take steps to prevent future abuses.

We are against all forms of discrimination, including against people based on sexual orientation. When left unchecked, discrimination and human rights abuses can lead to destabilization and conflict.

Tomorrow, the United States will lead a first-ever meeting on human rights in international conflicts in the UN Security Council to underscore our commitment to addressing human rights abuses wherever they threaten international peace and security.

GLAAD reacts:

The attacks on LGBTQ men and reports of concentration camps in Chechnya were beyond horrific, and Ambassador Haley is taking the right step in speaking out against these blatant violations of human rights,” said Sarah Kate Ellis, GLAAD President and CEO. “This is a powerful sign that the U.S. Mission to the United Nations will continue to prioritize LGBTQ acceptance and fight discrimination and human rights abuses around the world.”

If only I could believe that this is sincere and not some right-wing strategy to do something else.

We are only pawns to use for negotiation for something else to this administration.

A day late and a spine short.

  • Ninja0980

You might be Nikki but given the fact your boss and your party haven’t said one word about this shows they clearly don’t give a damn.

  • Johnny Wyeknot

When it comes to torture, every second counts. We are weeks into this fiasco.

  • Treant

Why do I feel that this is no more than grandstanding and no actual push in any way will ever be forthcoming?

Oh, right, because Haley is that word we’re not allowed to use around here.

    • Gerry Fisher

      “Sycophant”? “Empty Suit”? “Opportunist”?

      • Gerry Fisher

        “Enabler.” “Complicit.”

Shorter, although all of those also fit. If it’s an R, it’s not worth my time.

    • Ninja0980

Her treatment of LGBT citizens when she was governor of South Carolina speaks more to her character then this does.

Exactly. I stand by my choice of word. 🙂

Yeah but you didn’t do it willingly and ASAP.

So no no thumbs up or good job brownie for you Haley.

And no i’m not talking about literal brownies in that last bit.

  • The Chechen Republic, commonly referred to as Chechnya, is a federal subject of Russia. It is located in the North Caucasus, situated in the southernmost part of Eastern Europe, and within 100 kilometres of the Caspian Sea.

Yet Haley never once mentions Russia, which could intervene. This would be like if these murders were happening in Puerto Rico, but the U.S. claimed no responsibility to stop it from happening.

Lest we forget, Russia is the country which made it illegal to be publicly LGBT.

    • clay

Russia is (one) country which made it illegal to protest against the murder of gay men and the rape of lesbians.

  • another_steve

She has an interesting personal background. An “identification,” perhaps, with what it means to be a minority.

    From her Wiki page:

“Haley was raised as a Sikh. In September 1996, she married Michael Haley with both Sikh and Methodist ceremonies. Haley has since converted to Christianity and attends a United Methodist Church. During a Christianity Today interview, Haley responded “What I hope is that my parents do what’s right for them,” when asked whether or not she hopes her parents convert to Christianity. She attends Mt. Horeb United Methodist Church, as well as Sikh Gurdwara services.”

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nikki_Haley

    • clay

“do what’s right for them” So vague, it can comfort both the rabid dogmatists and the personal relativists.

      • another_steve

I see no problem with that verbiage of hers, clay.

We must all do what’s “right” for us.

How can any of us do otherwise.

        • clay

Some will believe that they ONLY right thing for them to do is convert. Because she (very carefully) left that open, she means that, or she wants (some of) her listeners to vote for her BECAUSE they think that’s what she meant.

          • another_steve

That’s a valid reading of it, certainly.

I choose to focus on that glint of daylight that shines beneath a mostly closed door.

Perhaps she was saying that she really doesn’t have the final word on this, and that all must choose for themselves.

          • clay

Yes, but she’s a politician. If that’s what she meant, or if she wanted to be clear that is what she meant, she could have said it in a way to make it clear. She chose NOT to eliminate the Christianist possibility.

    • BobSF_94117

Nothing that I know of in her political career indicates an empathy with any minority other than her individual self in the climb up the GOP pecking order.

      • another_steve

Given the anti-LGBT monsters that comprise the Trump Administration, there seem to be far worse than her.

        More from her Wiki page:

“In April 2016, Haley indicated she would not support legislation introduced by the South Carolina State Senate which would require transgender individuals to use restrooms based on biological sex instead of gender identity. Haley stated:

“These are not instances… Y’all haven’t reported on anything. I haven’t heard anything that’s come to my office. So when I look at South Carolina, we look at our situations, we’re not hearing of anybody’s religious liberties that are being violated, and we’re, again, not hearing any citizens that feel like they are being violated in terms of freedoms.”

Haley described such restroom legislation as unnecessary.”

        • BobSF_94117

Of course there are worse. But she hasn’t done anything FOR gay rights. She has refrained from hurting us on a couple occasions.

  • SoCalGal20

Something to keep an eye on in NV. The SoS there is claiming (in a letter she sent to the Governor) that voter fraud happened and accusing the DMV of allowing pwople to register without the proper documentation. Problem is, it’s not up to the DMV what the proper documentation is, which the SoS should know.

    • Something I kinda remembered vaguely but had it confirmed today: Before Ms. Switzer ran, the Boston Marathon was an all male event. While she ran, she was physically assaulted a number of times by other runners.

Yes, men did not want to compete against her, and so tried to stop her from running.

      Still, she persisted…

          • Yeah, that ‘official’ was one of the most awful offenders.

          • Strepsi

I just heard her on the radio… The official was screaming “Get the hell out of my race!” and was so mad he physically attacked her in front of the media!

          • David Milley

That she kept going after being attacked testifies to her courage. I’m glad to hear she’s come to a good place about it now.

          • Todd20036

Fortunately, that race official didn’t look like he ran more than from the sofa to the refrigerator to get a beer.

        • David Milley

Burly guy, number 390, was her boyfriend, later her husband for a while, running interference as the race official tried to rip away her number. I loved that Switzer kept right on. I remember watching this with my folks.

I just watched this on T.V. That race official deserved worse than he got.

Well then don’t come to Texas without your favorite poking stick ready – I have heard and read this phrase (in it’s multiple forms) incessantly since the election concerning a gamut of issues and subjects from many people and it makes me sick, especially when the “good ole days” they remember just aren’t accurate (but heavily edited) usually based on “facts” from their elderly family. They will always accept things as the absolute truth even if there is ample and concrete evidence to the contrary which discredits and/or contradicts their views. To try and just discuss issues is like slamming your head into a concrete wall; and they become extremely aggressive when questioned. Sound like any (orange) person we all know?

She’s not perfect: she defended South Carolina’s constitutional ban on same sex marriage when other states didn’t, but she certainly did the right thing here. She also refused to take the bait on a “bathroom bill” for SC, and she showed leadership in getting rid of the confederate flag that no longer flies on the capital grounds. Amazingly, she even said a speech she heard by Hillary Clinton inspired her to run for office. How many Republican women would say that?

Not even on the bench a goddamned hour and already Gorsuch is comfortable with overturning recently decided UNANIMOUS Supreme Court decisions. Why? Because if a law is written vaguely or sloppily, he doesn’t care if a particular interpretation (1) makes no logical sense and (2) runs counter to the ideals of justice itself.

    • Ninja0980

In case you think I’m kidding, Trump already said last year that’s what he was going to do: Let this one particular conservative lobbying group pick his nominees for him.

He could have said he’d find concentration camps Constitutional, and Nazis would still appoint him.

All they care about is undoing all the good this country did

      • The only reason he is on the SCOTUS at all is that McConnell’s evil strategy to destroy the American government has worked – there will NEVER be a president who can make a future SCOTUS appointment if his party does not control the Senate. Future Senates will allow the SCOTUS members to drop dead without replacement – and it may well be that when a particular party has both presidency and the Senate, that older justices will be pressured to resign in favor of ideologically pure youngsters in excellent health.

I also fear that THIS administration will have n compunction about creating additional openings on the Court by the use of Putin-like poisonings – and I suspect (without proof) that the death of an African-American Muslim woman who sat on the New York Court of Appeals might not have been a suicide at all, but a test of what the Administration may have planned. (I know, it’s an unfounded conspiracy theory, but if justices start mysteriously dying . . . )

    • Just what we needed (okay, didn’t need at all): A brand new Supreme Court Justice who already thinks deciding cases is simple and easy if you just pretend law itself is simple — and that all it takes is finding the most literal reading of text, even when the text makes no sense and requires interpretation of intent to reach a judgment.

      https://twitter.com/NinaTotenberg/status/854111485051768832

      • David Milley

Let’s hope he follows his mother’s side of the family health wise and continues to smoke, that will ensure he doesn’t.

        • Yes, he is. It isn’t even that he’s going to be hyper-far-right conservative, which was a given, it’s that he’s going to try to apply a long-discredited judicial philosophy of absolute strict literalism. Even when it makes no sense to do so.

No wonder this goat-fucker ruled in favor of the company that ordered its driver to either freeze to death or put people at risk by driving a rig with frozen brakes. Why? Because a particular loophole in the law made it technically legal.

          • clay

Long time ago, a law professor did an analysis of all the decisions, whether majority or dissent, of Justice Rhenquest. He found that in every decision, if the parties were:

US citizen v. a state or federal government, the government wins
Corporation v. a state or federal government, the corporation wins
State government v. federal government, the state government wins
US citizen v. Corporation, Corporation wins

Apparently, there were no exceptions to this rule, so it was very easy to determine how he would vote. Gorsuch will likely be the same.

      • clay

        doesn’t that mean he’s a . . . simpleton?

        • Kind of. What it really means is he will be one of the most ideologically rigid and literalist-dogmatic justices we’ve ever seen.

          • clay

So Nikki wants to run for office again after this gig is up…

    • DaddyRay

Haley’s parents moved to South Carolina in 1969; she was born in January 1972. In those days, it took at least five years to be naturalized. So it’s evident Haley’s parents weren’t U.S. citizens at her birth. Thus she is ineligible to the offices of president and vice-president. For both, the Constitution says one must be a “natural born Citizen” of the United States, a deliberately higher standard than simple citizenship.

      • SoCalGal20

Huh? If she was born in the U.S. it doesn’t matter what her parent’s citizenship is. She is automatically a citizen by right because she was born on U.S. soil (assuming she was born in the U.S.).

  • Lars Littlefield

Little Nikki is concerned about LGBT lives in Chechnya. That’s nice of her. But doesn’t she realize she has no power? Nothing she says or does will have any effect. So much for grandstanding. If you want to see what was lost not just with SCOTUS but the lower courts, read this article.
And ask yourself, why did Democrats NOT highlight what they were able to do with the 4th Circuit and highlight the judicial vacancies on the lower courts, which matter just as much if not more then SCOTUS does.
I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, this is an area where Democrats should be called out on.
Because when push comes to shove, we don’t take the courts seriously like conservatives do.
And that attitude will have consequences for generations to come.

  • ultragreen

This is nice. Unfortunately, Nikki Haley and her Republican friends seem to be far less concerned about improving LGBT rights in the United States. She was the governor of South Carolina, where the anti-sodomy law is still on the books and discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation in employment, housing, etc., is still legal.

    • Nasty Girl Brianna

The only time the GOP actually cares about the LGBT community is when they want to scare people into voting for them.

Unfortunately it seems to work in this nation of overgrown amygdalae.

    • E.J.
    • That Trump call is not going to work in Cobb County or anywhere in Georgia 6. My sister used to live there — it is not that kind of place. If Ossoff does not hit 50%, which he probably will not do (I predict 44%), he will make a runoff — but it won’t be because of that Trump message. The people there do not like to be treated like stupid rednecks or talked down to. It is more like a Northern Virginia suburb than anything– and they are not generally anti immigrant there I don’t think.

    It’s just another PR stunt.

      • marshlc

        I agree.

  • Jean-Marc in Canada

Sadly, many will see this as a good thing and push the faux narrative of 45 caring, not realizing that it’s actually window dressing to cover up the fact that 45’s regime is anti-gay themselves. If it does anything more than that, I might actually be impressed.

        YUP

  • Nikki Haley is apparently one of the saner members of the administration – this is something she exhibited when she was governor as well. I guess that her days are numbered, as I am sure that the nutcases in charge are not going to stand for much in the way of sanity.

    • SoCalGal20

They probably stuck her over at the UN thinking they could forget about her. I think she’s said some things that were opposite of SoS too.

      • clay

Considering how much they hate the UN, now their rabid fans can hate her as a colluder.

    • CharlestonDave

Nikki wasn’t awful for LGBT as governor here. She headed off an HB-2 style bathroom bill, saying we didn’t need it in SC, and did so skillfully enough that there was minimal fallout with the hard right. I think she has a sensitivity to discrimination from her time growing up as a brown-skilled girl in Bamberg, a small town in SC. In the recent CNN interview, she related the story that as a young girl she competed in a beauty pageant there, and they wouldn’t let her compete for the black crown or the white crown. Her mother asked if she could at least sing the song she had prepared for the talent portion. They let her do that, and the song was, “This Land is Your Land, This Land is My Land.”

As governor, she did a good job with economic development, mainly by hiring the right salespeople, but the benefits of that development have mainly accrued to the already-wealthy areas. My main gripe with Nikki is that everything was subservient to lowering taxes. The state desperately needs better roads and better schools, especially in the central part of the state (the I-95 “corridor of shame”) and Nikki and her pals in the Republican state legislature pretty much block everything. So we have really low gas prices due to minimal taxes, and really crappy roads. We have low school taxes, and most of the public schools are weak, aside from some specialty schools that end up getting the cream of the student crop. You get what you pay for.

There is a substitute, a plastic splint — Sleep Right is one such — that helps if you don’t have a CPAP handy or if you’re traveling light. It’s not as good for apnea, and it does get uncomfortable sticking it up your nose, esp. after a week or so. It is a temporary solution, though.

      • DaddyRay

I’ll have to look into that. My machine should be repaired this week some time, but I’d certainly like to try something without power that I could take camping

        • coram nobis

It helps, but as a short-term expedient. But yes, for camping or trips where you don’t want to pack a machine, it might do. CVS had it, maybe RiteAid and the other big chains as well, if you want to have it tomorrow.

        • I have two machines, I bought one direct on ebay for around $300 that is laying around somewhere before Blue Cross gave me a new one — its the same one, and is around 3x new. I have a spare just in case. If you look around you can purchase a spare very inexpensively. If you do not know how to program it they are easy to do so or someone will do it for you, because they do not want you programming these machines on your own. You can use your humidifier and accessories with them.

      • Treant

Breathe Right strips might help. Through my current “can’t pass air through my sinuses” bout, I’ve been using those.

I actually find that the CVS brand works extremely well, is cheap, and is available in a clear version nobody even notices.

        • Natty Enquirer

Those work for me, too. Though I’ve developed a technique of propping my cheek up with one hand that sort of works. Or I could just lose 40 pounds. Sigh.

          • Yeah but you have to not have sleep apnea to lose weight because having sleep apnea really slows your metabolism because it cuts your night time oxygen usage by as much as 30% and its a vicious cycle blah blah blah — just using a CPAP machine can drop your overweight by itself.

          • coram nobis

Flonase might also be helpful if you have sinus, allergy or septum issues. Opens things up a little more.

          • I use Flonase! I really like it, its much better than pills the doctor gave it to me. I live in South Florida and everyone has allergies here, things grow year round and every season is Spring here. And yes, I have a deviated Septum! LOL

          • Max_1

I do OTC decongestants with Flonase. If I skip a few days I tend to get bad reactions… Nasal rinses every morning helps a lot…

          • coram nobis

Flonase is OTC these days, so that helps.

It helps, though peeling that adhesive off the nose every day — it’s kind of like a band-aid — isn’t good for the skin either. The Sleep Right splint is (to a limited extent) re-usable.

    • I have a CPAP. I started using it last June, and I only need to use it for 4-5 hours a night and it has given me all sorts of health benefits, I use a Philips Respironics with a humidifier. But — if I sleep with my head raised, as in a recliner, or simply with a large wedge pillow in bed, it really helps. Try raising your head at a 30 degree angle and buy a large wedge pillow if you don’t have one — makes a huge difference. My mom uses the breathe right strips that Treant mentions and it works for her. Here is the type of pillow that works for sleep apnea at Walmart https://www.walmart.com/ip/Dream-Serenity-Bed-Wedge-Memory-Foam-Pillow/47482949

Obviously they were confused – they didn’t know it was spelled Whining

Are they going to do an article on the folks that knew he was a fake all along yet?

      • Skeptical_Inquirer

They really need to talk to people who had their brains switched on. I’m tired of them talking to numbskulls.

What I loathe about Trumpeteers is that they show way more patience with Trump than they ever did with Obama. And FFS, they should have listened to all the people who worked with Trump in NYC and were cheated out of their rightful wages/money.

They remind me of people who are shocked! at the person who cheated on his previous spouse with them has now cheated on THEM. They didn’t give a damn about the person they were hurting and only are now whining about being hurt themselves.

      • Ninja0980

Obama was a Democrat and more importantly was black, therefore he got no benefit of a doubt.

      • Blake J Butler

The expectations were high for him, Obama had to be specially qualified for some of these people to even vote for him once in 08 or 12. They saw that he wasn’t living up to his expectations, not noting the republican obstructionism and lost every chamber despite winning in 12, until losing complete control in 2016.

Trump had to be rich and white, that was the qualifications for him. They are more patient with him, because he’s white, the expectations were higher for Obama because he was black and since he wasn’t able to get a lot accomplished without having all chambers under democratic control for most of his administration they attacked him and hold him to a different standard.

ugh PA. The Full Frontal with S. Bee last year bout those people told me everything I needed to know. Grown ass women saying that a woman shouldnt be president. POX on all of them

    • Cuberly

What exactly are these people expecting?

It’s what drives me crazy the most. That somehow some sort of idealized reversal of the concerns of the modern world will manifest itself? This happens on the right and left. Like we can do a do-over and ignore the fact that the world, and our place in it, can be wished away?

    • JT

Fuck, these people are stupid. They haven’t worked it out yet. I guess that’s what keeps them sending their money to grifter televangelists.

  • Lazycrockett

There is this show on Hulu called Harlots, I’m only 2 episodes in and its either going to be high camp or drama. It would be great camp.

Blakey was suppose to go to black church this Easter Sunday, and attend a affirming LGBT sermon lead by a guy in charge of the Bowie County Democrats who was the pastor at the church i was suppose to attend, but i came down with the rhinovirus and i missed out. Coughing, stuffy and runny nose, sore throat, chills, etc. The church okayed back in February that we could use their event center for our Halloween ball, and allow us to use the church space to being alcohol on the premise.

Now i have a career fair to set up a booth at the convention center, and another booth ay my universities spring fling event this Thursday.

Sorry you came down with all that. Find a neti pot, get a bottle of alkalol, contains capsicum, use as directed. Alkalol is over the counter here. Neti posts available in most pharmacy. Hope you feel better. We’re planning to go to the Lucie’s Place ‘thing’ here, next month. Good luck.

Do you hear yourselves and truly understand what it is when you speak or is this scripted?
