New York Times Blasts Trump On LGBT Rights

From the editorial board of the New York Times:

It was a jarringly unorthodox moment even for Donald Trump. At a rally in Colorado last October, an audience member handed him a gay pride flag that bore a handwritten endorsement: “LGBTs for TRUMP.” The candidate smiled as he unfurled the flag, displaying it for a few seconds. A spokesman later said Mr. Trump was “proud to carry the ‘L.G.B.T. for Trump’ rainbow flag on stage,” since he was campaigning to be “president for all Americans.”

It didn’t take long for prominent gay Republicans to proclaim that the Republican Party had, at long last, turned a corner on gay rights under Mr. Trump. After he was elected, some gay rights activists held out hope that Ivanka Trump and Jared Kushner, the president’s daughter and son-in-law, would be staunch allies in the West Wing, considering that they had traveled in liberal circles in New York.

Yet, the nomination of several key officials, who have disparaged the L.G.B.T. community and sought to curtail the rights of its members, has exposed the narrative that Mr. Trump would be a champion of gay and transgender people as a fallacy. “It has been a catastrophe,” said Mara Keisling, the executive director of the National Center for Transgender Equality and a leading strategist behind a string of legal and policy victories the community achieved during the Obama administration. “Every twitch we’ve seen from the administration has been anti-L.G.B.T.”

The editorial goes on to note some of the most prominent anti-LGBT figures in the Trump administration. Hit the link.

No wonder the Green Partiers and Bernie or Busters helped put Trump in office.

        Don’t you know.
If we all make $$, issues of bigotry will magically go away!

    Gee, NYT, you think?

Our side knew Trump was a suck-up to the RWNJs who have always been notoriously anti-LBGT. We knew that except for a few local politicians, there is no such thing as a pro-LBGT republican.

Would have been nice if you said something earlier.

I still think it is possible that Trump will set up “reeducation” camps to “fix” LBGTs.

    • Tawreos

Maybe, but they may also be waiting to see how things work out in Chechnya first.

      • Todd20036

Notice Trump isn’t saying shit about that.

        • Tawreos

It makes it harder to round people up when they are forewarned.

        • When he failed to mention Jews on International Holocaust Remembrance Day, it was at that point I knew he cared about no one else enough to even pretend to. He’s a single interest guy, himself, his money, his status, his, his, his.

          • olandp

I knew he cared about nothing but himself when he destroyed the sculptures on the top of the Bonwit Teller building to make way for his hideous “tower”.

    • j.martindale

I don’t know if so-called gay rethugs will ever vote Democratic. They have no allegiance to their fellow man. Self-serving is the only requirement to be a Rethug, and they forfeit all responsibility for their fellow man when they ally with those vultures.

      • MonochromeMouse

They think the democrats hate them too and just want to “keep them on the plantation” by passing laws to protect their rights. That’s how all minorities who vote republican think.

        • Ninja0980

Or they’ve deluded themselves into thinking their party will turn a corner when they never will.

    • Nowhereman

And they will be privatized and run by churches.

    • Ninja0980

As with other groups over the years, the NYT and other outlets never ask the minority group they’re talking about their option.

  • Gustav2

Who knew this would happen with a Trump administration?

    • -M-

  • bkmn

And give the NYT two or three days and their staff will pen an article telling us how pro-LGBT he is. Their editorial staff are good, their pool of writers – not so much. That is why I will not subscribe to the NYT.

  • Randy503

I would certainly appreciate a comment — any comment — from conservative gays on why they voted for Trump.

And if you are going to hide behind that “being gay doesn’t define me” baloney, then why are you on a gay website?

    • Todd20036

They’re in it for the tax deductions. They have the money to pay for their civil rights AND they don’t care about anyone but themselves.

Either that, or they are religious freaks who HATE themselves and hope that God will forgive them for being gay by throwing other gays under the bus

    • Butch

I have noticed that Log Cabin has been awfully, awfully quiet lately.

      • Todd20036

Well, they lost their most public spokes-douche, Milo.

And they have no victories from the GOP to point to as evidence of their influence.

        • Butch

Yeah, Milo is definitely in the category of blessed silence, but even their “president,” Angelini or whatever his name is.

          • Ugh. I’m waiting for him to finish his stint at Promises in Malibu and to show up claiming to be clean and sober any day.

          • McSwagg

Perhaps we can start calling him “Malibu Barbie” when he emerges.

      • Some of the bloggers are still around but as usually focusing on bashing of liberals and Democrats and ignoring the obvious problems with the GOP at every level.

        • Ninja0980

Yup, that’s what Guy Benson and Tammy Bruce are doing non stop.

    • Strepsi

I would not appreciate a comment from them. I have heard many comments over the last 14 years I’ve been fighting for marriage equality alone, and the comments have been 100% boot-licking incoherent garbage.

    • -M-

I hate that “I’m not a single issue voter” bullshit. Me neither, but legalized discrimination is one of the issues that’s a hard ‘No’ for me. And you’d think even racist/sexist/classist/… jerks would be opposed to discrimination against themselves. And I still want to know how tax breaks or the imaginary economic stimulus is supposedly more important than having the same, or any, rights to make money and own property.

      • Randy503

What kills me is that they say, “well, I’m a conservative first, and so I want a strong military, lower taxes, social services cut, the whole kit and caboodle what the GOP stands for.” Then they say that being gay isn’t really part of the equation because these other issues are guiding how they vote.

Okay, fine. You get to vote that way. But then they claim that they are a member of the Log Cabin Republicans! Or GoProud. If the “issues” are what concern you, then just be a republican. But if you are going to join the LCR or the go proud, you are thereby defining yourself as a GAY conservative. You can’t claim you aren’t defining yourself as a gay man when you are actually defining yourself as a gay man!

        • -M-

That. And the fact that the GOP’s record on such issues as fiscal conservatism, the economy, defense, foreign policy, or government being small or lean or accountable is garbage.

    • Jean-Marc in Canada
    • Ninja0980

Economy blah blah, liberals weak blah blah, and other bullshit is all I’ve gotten from them.

  • Joe in PA

Thanks for the news flash NYT. Sheesh.

    • madknits

You know it, I know it, but, a lot of straight people, even allies, don’t understand how fundamentally anti LGBT the orange shit gibbon and his Cabinet are. Or they assume that “it’s not that bad.” Straight people are not aware of a lot of stuff that goes on, like it being legal in 29 states to fire someone just for being gay, or to deny them housing.

  • Ragnar Lothbrok

Just plant in his head that gays control a large percentage of world wealth and things will literally change overnight.

  • Rex

So, he’s good for the LGBTQ community because he doesn’t approve of pushing us off buildings to our death? But he’s perfectly OK with appointing staff that would be fine with it.

    • Bad Tom

      Plausible deniability.

    • Ninja0980

Or nominating judges who think we deserve no rights.

  • Ragnar Lothbrok

OT- anyone following that story of the
Facebook Killer / 5 state Manhunt in Ohio ??

I found it odd that they have footage of him in his vehicle, a cooperative girlfriend, yet no mention of plate #, or vehicle description on either msnbc or cnn.

    • Rex

The vehicle information is out, it’s been covered non-stop here in the Cleveland area.

  • Gigi

No one is supports LGBT rights would choose Pence as his running mate.

    • Silver Badger

Not to mention his entire cabinet.

      • Gigi

Betsy Devos says she’s pro-LGBT. Thoughts?

      • MonochromeMouse

To be fair, but not really, trump’s cabinet picks were made based off of who gave him the most money, I don’t think he really gives a fuck what they believe as long as they don’t get more attention than him.

  • Ginger Snap

I’m guessing nothing good will come of today 4/17/17. Our country is turning into a giant racist shit hole and i am starting jury duty today FML hard.

  • Rex

    Don’t blame Trump.
He did everything he could to prove he was unfit to be president.

    • Chucktech

Yup. You’d have to be pretty stupid to vote for Trump. Or, pretty deplorable. Or, pretty much a traitor. There’s no other explanation.

Damn! I didn’t see your post. I wondered the same thing.

    • Bad Tom

      I read it as ignorance.

    • Todd20036

Which makes one wonder if the man who handed the Manchurian Orange was actually gay, or just a poser.

      • Nowhereman

It’s likely that a campaign staffer did it, telling Trump that it will win over teh gays for him…

  • Alexander Stallwitz

When Trump picked Pence as VP, i knew Trump and his surrgorates attempts to cast him as a friend of LGBTs was a lie. Trumpy is no friend to us and should be considered an enemy. I am not holding my breath that Ivanka and Jared will change his mind.

    • Nowhereman

We haven’t heard Caitlyn raving about what a nice guy Trump is lately…

      • She’s still waiting to use the bathroom.

        • David L. Caster

          Exactly. That full of it.

      • Skip Intro

She’s vacuous, a common opportunist, a Trumper, a Kardashian(!) and her contribution to the trans community is that she simply wants to be seen as a pretty girl. Caitlyn really doesn’t want to feel a connection to other LGTBQ people or be at all political. We saw that on her “reality” show, there were fabricated road trips, parties and go-kart races … absurd. Allow her to be what she’s always wanted to be — a 70-year-old “pretty girl.”

  • That_Looks_Delicious

Speaking of anti-LGBT, it appears that the man who basically owns Coachella, Philip Anschutz, is a bigtime supporter of ADF, FRC and other antigay hate groups.

And for those who know Spanish, El Pais has done a big detailed article on this:

I’m pretty sure most of the attendees had no idea that this is who their money is supporting.

    • From what I’ve heard, I don’t think they care.

  • Superman

Tell us something we don’t already know. What began with a hostile Republican Party Platform written for the convention by Tony Perkins was quickly followed by Mike Pence for VP and the appointment of a slew of gay haters for cabinet positions. There will be a steady drip of anti gay actions as a result. The timing of it all was terrible for the transgender community, which is mired down in the mud with the haters filing anti trans bathroom legislation state by state with little federal help in opposition. No sense in the gay community whining about it. This is what a conservative Republican administration looks like. We might get 8 years of it. And it could get worse. We haven’t seen what Tom Price will do to health care, and bad decisions affecting the hiv community could throw the gay community into crisis. The Courts are probably the only place we’ll see advancement. The 7th Circuit Court of Appeals ruled that sexual orientation is covered under the protections of the 1964 Civil Rights Act. This is huge. It means the whole issue may go up to the Supreme Court and we might get an important win nullifying a host of bad State laws and decisions. We have to up our game. We’ve really lost a lot of State battles, the public doesn’t think we need anti-discrimination protections, and we’re just losing more and more ground on these bathroom bill transgender fights.

    • Nowhereman

Well, since they want to eliminate the CDC, I’d say it’s a safe bet that HIV/AIDS research will come to a screeching halt. All that they are FOR is dismantling our government.

      • The world is entering a second “dark ages”. A distrust of science, a renewed belief in religion, including belief in witches and demons and possession.

  • kcken

I can’t vote here but I sent checks/cheques to both the ACLU and the HRC. Best I can do for now…

    • Bad Tom

      We thank you.

  • FAEN

Homocons are pathetic traitors. Just because a homophobe holds a pride flag does NOT mean he/she will stand up for us. How and why this is so difficult to understand is beyond me.

They so desperately want to be liked by the GOP but that will never happen.

    • canoebum

Hey, racists can suck dick too. That doesn’t make them a part of the gay community. We are more than a sexual minority, we are a vibrant community which shares values of equality, inclusion, courtesy and progressive ideals. Anyone who supports Trump and his ilk has little, if anything, in common with our community.

      • FAEN

Most racists tend to be in the closet when it comes to dick sucking.

On your further point I could not agree more.

      • ECarpenter

The Gay Community isn’t a monolithic block. Some gay people are conservative, some are racist, some are biblical literalists. They get to be part of the Gay Community too, whatever your personal rules for belonging are. Just like we can’t choose our relatives, we can’t choose who gets to be LGBT. This isn’t to say we have to agree with them, or have sex with them.

        • Strepsi

And a lot of the most vile homophobes, like that young Shoebat, and Cernovich, and the Coach dude Joe occasionally covers, ping my gaydar hard in an icky “I hate my secret self so I will harm others” Roy Cohn vibe.

There will be a special circle of Hell for these people… with all of them together, and no Top 😉

        • canoebum

You and I apparently have differing concepts of what constitutes a “Community”.

        • customartist

My community is one of empathy, inclusion, truth & honesty,…and then there is the Republican Party.

  • Paula

I call bullshit on the picture. The flag is upside down. Perhaps some GLBT person was sending a hidden message?

Surprise surprise surprise that a bigot is a bigot.

Even if Trump had never said a word, pro or con, about LGBT folks in his entire life, you can just look at the way he treats and speaks about Mexicans, Muslims, women, and know that he’s a man who sees the world in terms of “people like me are good, people not like me are bad”.
