BERKELEY: Pro-Trump “Citizen Militia” And Nazis Battle Anti-Trump Protesters, Riot Police Intervene [VIDEO]

The Los Angeles Times reports:

About 500 pro-Trump demonstrators and counter-protesters faced off Saturday morning at a “Patriots Day” rally in Berkeley, where the two groups have violently clashed on city streets twice in the last three months. About 10 a.m., dozens of counter-protesters dressed in black and wearing masks tore down a plastic netting that separated the two groups in Martin Luther King Jr. Civic Center Park. The Trump supporters moved forward with American flags and chants against “communists.”

Two counter-demonstrators were led away by police in handcuffs. At one point, a loud explosion could be heard in the park and fist fights broke out among members of both groups. Berkeley police, wearing riot helmets, immediately rushed in and the crowd moved back.

Stewart Rhodes, founder of the citizen militia group known as the Oath Keepers, came from Montana with about 50 people wearing security gear to protect the Trump supporters. They were joined by bikers and others who vowed to fight members of an anti-fascist group if they crossed police barricades. “I don’t mind hitting” the counter-demonstrators, whom he called “neo-Nazis,” Rhodes said. “In fact, I would kind of enjoy it.”

More from the San Francisco Chronicle:

The rally was organized by a loose collective of far-right groups. One of them, Oath Keepers, which said it would provide security, has been categorized as a hate group by the Southern Poverty Law Center.

Another organizing group, Liberty Revival Alliance, released a YouTube video in advance, billing the “Patriots Day” event as a peaceful free speech rally and stating that it does not support violence or intimidation.

Invited speakers, according to the video, include Lauren Southern, a Canadian activist who has said rape affects men more than women, and AltRight.com writer Brittany Pettibone, who has said she believes in Pizzagate, a discredited conspiracy theory involving Hillary Clinton.

  • swimboy

Rape affects men more than women? And slavery affected slaveowners more than slaves too? Maybe restrictive abortion law affect men more than women, and gay marriage laws affect straight people more than gay people. No wonder these fuckheads think Trump is a great president.

    • Todd20036

The only way a rape would affect a man more than a woman, is if the man was raped.

      • JWC

        Which happens a lot

        • Todd20036

I do not forget the fact that I am 5’6″ and under 140

          • JWC

            For real?

          • Todd20036

Yup. I don’t run around scared, but despite my build, I can be overpowered. I keep that in mind.

          • JWC

            kewl

          • ColdCountry

All women live with that all the time.

I have a thing for short guys. Just sayin’. 😉

          • FAEN

            And how tall are you?

          • Christopher

            Ha!

            Just barely six foot. 😉

          • FAEN

            Nice!!

          • FAEN

I’m certain even though I’m 4 inches taller than you and 20 lbs heavier you could kick my butt lol.

        • That_Looks_Delicious

Honestly, I’m not totally on board with some of the ways the word “rape” gets stretched (IMO) in articles about that topic, such as this one in Slate:

          http://www.slate.com/articles/double_x/doublex/2014/04/male_rape_in_america_a_new_study_reveals_that_men_are_sexually_assaulted.html

To me, this is following down the path of what has been done with the word “abuse.” When the definition gets stretched out to infinity, the effect in the end is to trivialize all abuse. I once heard a grown woman (who was of course part of the perpetual victim brigade) tell me sincerely that her parents were abusive to her because they didn’t talk much and whenever the family got together they just sat and watched TV instead of having conversations. She claimed that this lack of conversation was “emotional abuse” which was as bad as physical abuse. It took every ounce of self-restraint not to roll my eyes at her. Around the same time I knew this woman, I knew a guy whose foster mother used to beat him so bad that she broke his bones (eventually a sharp-eyed teacher spotted it and he was fortunately removed from that home). I don’t think we want the same thing to happen with the word “rape.”

      • ColdCountry

Why is a man more more effected by being raped that a women?

    • ByronK

Southern if a fucking nutjob. Part of the infestation of mini-Coulter wannabes.

    • Strepsi
    • BudClark

Religion has rotted their brains, if they ever had any.

    • pepón

Well, if you take into account prison rape and men “being made to penetrate”, there are studies that say men are raped more often that what is usually thought, even to the point where the numbers are similar to the rape of women.

Of course, if the “affects more” is talking about the effect of rape after the fact, it’s just plain stupid to suppose men or women are more affected. Every individual will cope with it differently. But it’s not stupid to affirm society does expect men to cope better with rape than women, to the point where male rape wasn’t even a topic a few years ago. Which in itself is a sign of how misogynistic our societies are.

The thing is that just dismissing your opponent’s arguments is often not a good strategy. It’s what has taken us to the brink of a nuclear war.

  • disqus_Qm7Y1t9k8U

I don’t want to hear a single word said against antifa in this thread. No freeze peach for Nazis. Period.

    • Todd20036

Frozen peaches are only for the liberals!

  • Jacob

Again with the black clothed altfasc and provocateurs.

      WWJD?

For starters, He’d punch a Nazi in the face.

      • Bryan

So hard his children AND his ancestors would feel it.

      • I tried to look at it from The Religious point of view and asked myself WWJD then I realized the J was for Jehovah and he would kill everyone and their family for 7 generations, and then flood the earth to get all the puppies and kittens and everything else too cause that’s how he ROLLS

        • Snarkaholic

          All those abortions…

      • Christopher

Q: WWJD? (Who would Jesus disembowel?)

        A: Nazis.

  • MonochromeMouse

Antifa really needs to start arming themselves. The neo-nazis are armed for sure and have no problem with killing anyone who disagrees with them if given the chance.

    • Adonisus

Some of them have started to do so. Redneck Revolt, a rural working class antifa group, showed up armed to the teeth at a similar rally in Phoenix, Arizona.

Trust me, antifa is tired of farting around.

  • Todd20036

Just as you cannot shout fire in a theatre, you cannot condone the deaths of minorities and expect no consequences.

    • Carl

Identifying as a Nazi is identifying as a threat.

      • Christopher

Nazis are a minority. Now I’m torn.

I want to agree with not condoning deaths on such a level, but, they’re Nazis.

So, I’m gonna go with my gut and punch a Nazi. I feel that history will vindicate me in the long run.

  • pj

all dressed in black with masks on. must be proud of the views they believe in.

    • Sam_Handwich

they are afraid Burger King will fire them

      • Todd20036

To be fair, that Burger King character always creeped me out, too

      • Carl

I guarantee these Nazis are really upset they don’t get invited to all the nice parties the liberal kids are having.

    • BearEyes

      • Nowhereman

It sounds like a few of them actually got arrested this time. I’d like to know who is behind them. My guess is Steve Bannon and Company.

    • Nowhereman

I was just thinking that same thought. What a bunch of chickenshits.

    • JWC

      Just the new bedsheets

    • Tunamelt

I’m from Berkeley. The ones dressed in black with their faces hidden are the anti-drumpf side of the battle. They go by a variety of names but Black Bloc and BAMN are two of them.

      • Ernest Endevor

Exactly. As was just asked, who pays for them?

        • Stephen Elliot Phillips

Sounds like alt-protesters paid to disrupt and make our side look bad.

      • bs

Also known as: police. Agents provocateur sent to discredit any protests. Sure, there’s a few stunted 13-year-olds who just want to break shit, but much like all the “terrorism” convictions, the police infiltrated, led and instigated the crimes. In the case of terrorism, to show that “something is being done”. In the case of protests, the po-pos send in the “black bloc”, they break a few windows, and all of a sudden the conversation is about breakin shit & not what the protest was about.

    • Gustav2

      And will complain about burkas.

Antifa are not our friends. They will do anything to drag down progressive initiatives and wreck the Democrats’ chances and should be condemned.

    • Adonisus

Antifa couldn’t give less of a shit about the DNC and their corporate lackeys. This ain’t about petty American politics. It’s about violently shutting down Nazi scum and chasing them out of the city so they can’t threaten the lives of innocent Jews, blacks, muslims, etc.

      • Ernest Endevor

        You just proved my point.

        • Two sides of the same demented and delusional coin as far as I’m concerned.

  • John Ruff

Ah, California. I’m so glad that I live in DC.

  • Never thought I’d live in a country where the current President’s most ardent supporters are literally Nazis.

    • Gianni

I don’t get the connection but the Nazi nutjobs have adopted him as their Patron Saint.

      • The Nazis have made it clear whom they support and exactly why. And they were out in force during these Berkeley protests. There’s your connection.

        • Christopher

I look at it like this,

We fought a World War against these fuckers.

Therefore they are an enemy of this country. They have no business being part of the society that we’ve created since that time.

They are an enemy of this country.

Nazis must be punched and turned over to the Feds.

NAZIS DO NOT BELONG HERE! (Or anywhere, for that matter.)

        • This was their event. ANTIFA/Communists in black masks showed up to stir violence.

        Theyre Confederates too.

        • FAEN

          Pretty much the same thing.

  • Phil in FLL

I believe the issue today is whether Lauren Southern (the most well known speaker at this event) will be allowed to speak. If she can speak in Berkeley without having the people listening to her attacked, Antifa has lost.

    • Xiao Ai: The Social Gadfly

      No.

      • Phil in FLL

The entire Antifa proposition is that they have the ability to violently shut down speakers with whom they disagree. If they cannot do that, they are irrelevant. Sooooo… yes.

        • Adonisus

No, it wouldn’t. Southern isn’t worth any kind of fucking attention. She’s basically the Canadian Ann Coulter. She’s tried multiple times to provoke Antifa into attacking her.

    • Adonisus

Laura Southern is a notorious shit stirrer who intentionally tries to piss off Antifa people and then tries to play the victim on camera. So, fuck her.

My Grandfather would agree and his four brothers that lost their lives in that war. All my grandparents if they were alive today would be disgusted with what has become of the country they created after a horrific war that changed their lives.

      • Bob

I think your grandfather would’ve taught you American values, like Freedom of Speech.

The fact that some Nazis have supported Trump does not make him one, just as some terrorists who supported Obama did not make him one, too. Gramps probably would’ve trained you in logic, as well.

  • Nowhereman

All speech that doesn’t overtly incite violence (with the obvious “yelling ‘fire’ in a movie theater” exception) is worthy of protection in societies that value liberty and free speech. All.

I’m culturally Jewish and lost family members during the Holocaust.

I would protest any and all governmental suppression of the right of neo-Nazis to speak (provided there’s no overt call to violence on their part).

    • Phil in FLL

It’s admirable that your free-speech principles are all-encompassing. However, you needn’t extend your principles nearly that far in the case of Lauren Southern, the most high-profile speaker at today’s event. She is not a neo-Nazi. Lauren Southern’s main criticism is that a “rape culture” does not exist on American college campuses, but is very much a phenomenon in Muslim countries and has now been imported in Western Europe, courtesy of mass Muslim immigration. Not only does that have nothing to do with Nazi ideology, but the facts seem to support her statements. (See my link to Lauren Southern’s interview on the Rubin Report below.)

      • another_steve

I’m for the 100 percent airing of all points of views (subject to my “no overt call to violence” exception).

I trust in the ability of the human species to — in the fullness of time
        — separate the wheat from the chaff.

        • gaymex1

I basically agree with you, but individual lives don’t always have the fullness of time. In the fullness of time the earth will cease to exist, but that really sucks for folks trying to just live in peace day by day.

          • another_steve

Individuals who feel threatened must speak back, forcefully.

Reading about the diversion of Trump’s motorcade to avoid the “Show Us Your Tax Returns” protesters was the highlight of my day.

Combat evil non-violent speech with good non-violent speech.

          • gaymex1

Steve, I really don’t disagree with you in principle, but sometimes I wonder how you (one) measures and compares that which is overtly physically violent and that which is psychologically violent. How often must a young black child hear the n word before serious damage is done? People don’t have to be clubbed to sustain serious injury. Think of suicide rates among gay youth who have been psychologically attacked and who can’t discuss the issue even with family members. They seek a solution…suicide. It may be by their own hands, but they have felt cornered and threatened by words. They want peace. They find it.

          • another_steve

“How often must a young black child hear the n word before serious damage is done?”

            Hear ya.

To which Tony Perkins would say to our beloved blogmeister Joe, “See how your anti-Christian rhetoric damages our little Christian babies, Joe? See the damage you do there?”

          • gaymex1

Yes, it is a swamp. Fortunately we have Trump to drain it for us, so I don’t have to. I get your point and I even agree with it, but I think most of the rhetoric against Christians (and others holding world-view religious myths) is because of the vileness of their attacks on those different from them and their inability to allow others to live peaceful lives dfferent from theirs. If they would spend more time cultivating their own gardens instead of trying to weed mine, I would have little to say to them–negative or positive. I’m not sure a young black child, whose only crime is existence is trying to change anyone’s world view…unlike the tedious push of zealots who want everyone to be exactly as they are. Rationality has to be involved and it’s hard to be rational with folks who are basically irrational and who are proud of that irrationality, like the examples you cite. No matter how you shake it, the world is not flat.

        • Xiao Ai: The Social Gadfly

I agree. However, I’d argue that is more viable in an educated society. As of late, public education and reasoning in the United States is being watered down to the point that I’m no longer able to trust the human species as a whole.

          • gaymex1

I think you’ve put your finger on it. When we cannot trust the human species as a whole, how do we protect each other from the onslaught of the “poorly educated” and irrational?

          • Xiao Ai: The Social Gadfly

And that’s just it. I feel on some level that perhaps I need to try harder to make sure people are educated properly so that they become more critical thinkers. It’s hard to point the finger and those who’ve purposely become uneducated. Now the lazy thinkers, that’s another issue entirely.

          • gaymex1

I know that we can all try harder to help with the education of others (and ourselves, while we’re at it), though the task is sometimes overwhelming. When we homeschooled our son, our purpose wasn’t to stuff his young head with facts…facts abound if you know how to search for them. Our purpose was to develop his ability to think and to question. One afternoon I was reading an essay on one of the sites he used for studying. The topic was on the threat of human overpopulation and it was written by a homeschool student. I was amazed at the clarity of thought expressed by the young student. I almost jumped for joy when I realized that it was written by our son. It was an experience I will never forget. He no longer needed me. He could sort things out on his own. The downside was that he became more and more difficult to argue with. I mean, who wants to listen to a smart ass twelve year old cite pre-Socratic philosophers to win an argument?

          • another_steve

“I’m no longer able to trust the human species as a whole.”

I get criticized (perhaps justifiably) for being an absolutist in certain areas — nevertheless I feel strongly on this: In the fullness of time, nature/evolution/whatever assures the optimal and continued survival of the species.

            Whatever species. Humans included.

            Easily dismissible, I know.

            Nevertheless, that’s what I think.

          • -M-

In the fullness of time we’re all dead.

Evolution, in the biological sense, is just a result of the happy accident that something similar to what worked well enough to stave off death yesterday will probably work well enough tomorrow. There are no guarantees that it can find its way to a solution much less that it will do so in time to avert a catastrophe. Most species that ever lived on Earth are long extinct.

Human societies need to deploy their rational faculties for understanding and foresight to the fullest because we no longer have the assurance that a failed culture can’t take all the rest out with them.

          • another_steve

That’s the reasoned and articulate counter-argument to mine.

I am perhaps a rare breed of Philosophical Daoist / near-absolutist biological evolutionist. I believe the Way of Things is in the direction of beneficence and that nature/evolution/God/whatever you want to call it operates accordingly.

So there is direction and there is beneficence.

A minority view, this — one that reasonable people can logically and rationally take issue with.

          • -M-

I mostly agree with you about the direction of the moral arc, but wanted to point out that evolution doesn’t have a time table or any guarantees and uses brutal methods.

It might be virtually impossible for us to wipe out life on Earth, but it’s easy enough today to set human civilization back to before the Enlightenment and Industrial Revolution.

          • another_steve

I don’t think there’s any “going back” to an earlier time in civilization, -M-. I think what’s permanently changed the dynamic is the internet.

Because we’re all immersed in the cataclysmic changes that the internet has brought, it can be difficult to see and feel them. Entire generations are growing up today never having experienced the pre-internet age.

There’s good information out there and there’s bad, but I believe that the free exchange of information will, in the fullness of time, set us all free.

          • -M-

Assuming we don’t destroy the necessary infrastructure first.

      • marshlc

So the rape culture that existed even more, when I was young, well before mass Muslim immigration? How does she explain that?

      • Gustav2

When someone says Christians do not have a rape culture but another religion does…that is the textbook definition of Nazi propaganda.

        • Phil in FLL

Only a tiny percentage of American voters would accept your definition of Nazi. The human rights horrors being visited on women and gay men in the name of Islam are real, and calling criticism of Islam “Nazi” will only lose you election after election.

          • “tiny percentage” meaning women and decent men who went to college?

college have to be forced, like so many other institutions, but when they get with the program it’s a good thing. there is a rape culture in American college campuses. it needs to be constantly monitored and addressed with both punitive and educational actions.

go to any party on campus where there are a lot of athletes, greek system members, tech “bros,” or students from countries with a religious instruction to consider women second class beings.

i worked in rape counseling in college, it was never pretty. a very large percentage of women (1/3 of all you will ever meet in your life) will be raped on campus. and we still have a problem with getting rapists disciplined properly, as recent news stories on this subject demonstrate.

if you don’t think rape culture on campus is a thing, i suggest you do a little homework. polemicist con artists looking to make a buck by being controversial are like balloons. their claims are rarely based on reality.

Winning elections by a plurality or the electoral college doesn’t make you less of a Nazi propagandist.

    • A while ago, I read an interesting article that claims that the EU’s super strong hate speech rules has allowed the growth of the extreme right neo-nazis. While in countries with weaker hate speech laws, the hate speech exposed to sunlight diminishes in power.

      • gaymex1

That’s interesting. Do you happen to have a link for the article?

        • I’ve looked and looked and can’t find it, sorry. But for me a “while” ago, could be quite a long while, and it could have been in print before the world was on the web.

        • another_steve

Well that’s an excellent example of the swamp we (civilized peoples) find ourselves in when we start to define “good speech” vs. “bad speech.”

If we give license to that “defining,” if and when Tony Perkins, Franklin Graham and Bill Donahue assume power, this here JMG bloggy thing will be declared illegal and shut down.

          You can bet on that.

It’s an interesting article – but it’s not settled law.

Whether or not it’s illegal to call someone a homophobe will be decided by the European Court of Human Rights – to which the case is being – slowly – appealed.

I am loathe to second-guess the ECHR, but if if follows its own general rulings, the chances are that the judges will rule that if you are a homophobe, it’s only fair to call you one.

It’s wildly stupid to extrapolate French law into EU-wide laws.

The French are very much a force unto themselves – and frequently have their legal judgments reversed by the ECHR.

          • Jeffrey

I don’t think I extrapolated French law into EU wide laws, I merely presented their law as an example of European precedent and I, unlike you, managed to do so without being condescending.

      • Dazzer

I’d be interested in seeing that article.

There are two things to bear in mind, though:

        i) There are no ‘EU’ rules on hate speech (that’s the sort of mistake Americans always make). Each country has its own rules and interpretations of ‘free speech’.

ii) I’m not sure there are more neo-Nazis in Europe than there are in America. I’d like to see a proportional breakdown of the evidence based on per-head-of-population.

It’s also worth pointing out that the phrase/descriptor ‘neo-Nazi’ varies from state to state.

        • I was using “EU” as shorthand for various European countries.

          • Dazzer

I understand that – and I can see why someone would do that.

But as a European and member of the EU, I know that hate laws vary from country to country.

For example, it’s illegal to be a Holocaust denier in Germany and Austria. It’s not illegal in the UK.

However, I wouldn’t rush to make a value judgment about whether the laws were better in Britain or Germany/Austria in this instance. I live in Britain but I’ve been a regular visitor to Austria and Germany and can understand the historical/cultural reasons for their laws.

In the same way, England, Wales and Scotland all have laws against inciting hatred against various minorities (race, sex, sexual orientation) that wouldn’t pass muster in other EU countries.

The point I’m making is that the ‘shorthand’ of EU doesn’t really work.

And on a wider point, I’d be hesitant about assuming that there is an ‘absolute’ in ‘free speech’ that can be applied across all Western nations.

No country has absolute free speech and every country that subscribes to the idea inevitably puts brakes on the underlying philosophy that informs it.

          • Dazzer

    • Your point is well taken, but there’s a difference between free speech and blood libel, between free expression and incitement to violence.

Some on the far left and what looks to be the solid core of Trump’s most loyal Nazi/white-nationalist supporters don’t believe in the ‘no violence’ part.

      • another_steve

If a speaker publicly advocates violence, arrest her or him, on the spot.

        • There are ideas and positions more poisonous than merely shouting “go beat up that person.” One doesn’t have to be explicit in violence without fostering the mob mentality that doesn’t directly exhort violent acts, but merely creates the mentality where violence becomes increasingly less morally objectionable to the audience. Soon, the threshold is crossed, and violence happens.

Let’s take a random person or group. It’s wrong to assault or murder them, right? Now let’s say you label that group “drug dealers, rapists, thieves.” Or perhaps as “they’re all bad people, terrorists looking to kill us.” You didn’t specifically call for violence, but you will just have lowered the moral bar to that violence, merely by implying they’re bad people who should be stopped from committing crimes — and in America, violence to oppose violence is practically in the cultural DNA.

          • another_steve

I understand your point, Becca. Problem is, the “inference of the call to violence” or the “implied call to violence” argument could easily come back to haunt us progressives.

If and when David Duke ascends to power (not unimaginable in these Trump years), Joe’s blog here would — under an “inference/implied rule” — be immediately shut down.

          • Adonisus

But the thing is, steve, we’re not talking about any ol’ right-wing gathering here. We’re talking about NAZIS. Actual, flesh n’ blood, Hitler-loving, Hate dripping, genocide advocating NAZIS. Not NOM, not The Heritage Foundation, not Alliance Defending Freedom, not the Moral Majority, hell not even the fucking Tea Party, but actual fucking goddamn Jew-hating and Jew-killing NAZIS. That’s the big difference we’ve been trying to make you understand. Nazis don’t hold rallies to air their grievances. They hold rallies to intimidate and inspire fear in the disenfranchised groups they seek to subjugate, oppress and ultimately MURDER in mass numbers. Their views and their ideology are predicated on violence and irrationality. Meeting them with defensive violence is not only the SOLE way to oppose them, it is a MORAL DUTY.

          • another_steve

And I believe that confronting heinous views (as opposed to heinous actions) with violence is the descent to barbarism.

        • Ish

“If a speaker publicly advocates violence, arrest her or him, on the spot.” Years of being a racist apologist for Zionist have apparently turned Steve into a nazi apologist. Violence is the only thing that stops them. On this history is clear.

Ohio, 395 U.S. 444 (1969).

          Simple enough.

          • gaymex1

            “Simple enough.” lol.

      • Be that as it may, we can not lower ourselves, or our laws to the lowest common denominator.

    • Sam_Handwich

When free speech issues like this arise i’m always reminded of how NOT to react by Samuel Alito’s harebrained, tho admittedly sincere, lone dissent in Snyder v Phelps. (The lawsuit was initiated by the family of a Marine who died in Iraq, against Westboro Baptist creeps who protested outside their son’s funeral, in a designated area .)

“In order to have a society in which public issues can be openly and
vigorously debated, it is not necessary to allow the brutalization of
      innocent victims like petitioner.”

Okay fine. But who decides what is “brutal” and who is a “victim” of words, no matter how offensive? (This wasn’t a case of slander or libel, just WBC spewing their typical bullshit, and family claiming emotional distress)

There are types of speech we all despise, yet some things *we* say are despised by others. Let’s keep it that way.

      • ByronK

Such a hard issue in so many ways. I had the pleasure of meeting lawyer Alan Borovoy a year before he passed away. He was a founder of the Canadian Civil Liberties Association. I remember a few years ago being shocked that they were defending Bill Whynott’s right to free speech. But I read about it and expanded my mind around the issue. I go back to the tenant that you have the right to free speech but I have an equal right to object to what you are saying.

      • another_steve

“Okay fine. But who decides what is “brutal” and who is a “victim” of words, no matter how offensive?”

I could not possibly put it better than that, Sam.

    • canoebum

‘We’re coming for you!” is a threat of violence. I don’t consider that to fall under a free speech protection.

But then I never really got why they called it Good Friday. Sounded like a pretty shitty Friday to me. Short anecdote – I was talking to a friend about a newspaper article that I saw about men in the Philippines who actually get crucified for Easter. She mentioned the huge population of Filipino live-in care takers who work and send money home to their family. I said they send the money home because their relative want to get their nails done for Easter. Bu-da-bum.

It was an elegant trap in a way, and Musso seemed to be alluding to it in his speech. In the last half of 1924, Fascist thugs murdered the opposition leader Giacomo Matteoti, the anti-fascists took to the streets in rage, the fascists hit back, and finally Mussolini stands up before parliament and says he alone can end it by imposing order forcibly.

If his book is vacuous, I’ll be the first one to say so. We’ll see, I guess.

Hopefully other events around the country were well attended.

NYC, Bryant Park full. Three blocks down Sixth Avenue, east side of the Avenue full of people. Two blocks north. Same. 40th from Sixth Avenue to Fifth Avenue full. Among many organizations, the Gray Panthers were there and I saw a new protest sign: TRUMP’S LIES MATTER.

    • in our new reality, the purpose of these protests should be to use them for networking and committee formation. there aren’t going to be a lot of them at first. but now we have instant world wide communication.

anyone can start an open or closed website in which people do two things: form a shadow govt, or imagine alt-45 tweets. heh, those are funny, but there could be a serious set of groups, each planning what everyone should unite and focus upon at any give step down the road called our future.

they should also be using basic social networking stuff to increase the number of active activists. not just people like to tweet, but people who will commit to specific planned actions.

i’m sure a lot of this is already going on, so be patient. you can’t look at this and say, “if only we had a big enough protest everything would change overnight.” that’s not how it works, not now, and maybe not ever.

The chaos, tension and confusion we are experiencing now reminds of the summer of 2001, just prior to the 9/11 attacks. If you recall, the airlines were constantly overbooked, tempers were high, a lot of people were very unhappy about the “President Select” who was put in the Oval Office by an unprecedented intervention of the Supreme Court. It was a tense, exhausting summer, capped off by the worst foreign attack ever in our history (after the War of 1812). I’m getting the same feeling now, but perhaps the bombs will be bigger and the death toll much higher. I wrote to my (R) Representative two day ago to insist that Congress give its consent in a proper declaration of war before allowing Trump to go off half cocked and get us all killed.

I’ve sadly thought that for quite awhile now. The divide is deep – and the orange dumbass just keeps shaking his rattle. Even town-halls are getting edgy on issues outside of the typical core wedges. Fist fights are one thing – I worry more if/when the guns come out of hiding.

fine to ridicule them, but someday it won’t be so funny. NK is slowly becoming a menace of global proportions. and none of the options for dealing with that are savory.

Maybe now China will do something. According to folks who know – aka, the New York Review of Books China has till now preferred to to keep the NKRP intact so their borders aren’t swamped by refugees, Korea does not become a united and hostile nation on its doorstep, and they sell them war crap and such as. Perhaps now they’ll rethink their posture. Haven’t they already refused to sell them more coal? Trouble is, how many North Koreans will starve to death before the regime collapses?

        • RoFaWh

          …do something.

Send a small submarine up the Potomac, offload a group of commandos, penetrate the WH, and cart the orange asshole off to feature in a victory parade down the main drag of Beijing.

      • i don’t really agree. they are only saying the usual, stuff i’ve been hearing from them for decades. their leader is really awful and so is their military. but they are no more of a threat than they were a year ago. the difference is the Traitor, and how badly his masters in russia do or do not want war. this week is said to going to prove critical, a lot of the chatter is saying. if somebody high up gets arrested, what will they do? the administration itself seems a little discombobulated right now, so it’s anyone’s guess. but don’t mistake rhetoric with a change in the actual situation.

Did y’all see Andrew Sullivan’s latest rant? Starts with a tantrum about Hillary, wraps up racist:

Yet, today, Asian-Americans are among the most prosperous, well-educated, and successful ethnic groups in America. What gives? It couldn’t possibly be that they maintained solid two-parent family structures, had social networks that looked after one another, placed enormous emphasis on education and hard work, and thereby turned false, negative stereotypes into true, positive ones, could it?

    • MikeBx2
    • Skeptical_Inquirer

I really hate the “Model Minority” myth because I see it as a very insidious tactic on so many levels. It allows the main power structure to ignore the community’s real problem and is a cynical way to insult & hurt other minorities while targeting their anger at the minority being labeled as such.

I think this article really does a good job explaining some of the problems:

      http://nymag.com/daily/intelligencer/2017/04/dr-dao-and-the-model-minority-in-the-age-of-trump.html

“As Trump’s election has proven, so long as mainland China continues to
ascend and the United States continues to decline, there is political
gain to be had from American politicians stoking anti-Asian sentiment.
If America is no longer great and America is never to blame, then some
nefarious other must be responsible. The relatively prosperous
Asian-American population could become an inviting target for nativists,
whether rich, middle-class, or poor. Asians in America remain a small
and vulnerable population, and make for promising scapegoats. Incendiary
rhetoric leads to verbal nastiness and “non-life-threatening” (to
borrow the phrase of the Chicago police regarding the incident on the
flight) assaults; further down the road— if the long history of
anti-Asian laws and pogroms in America is any example — could be murder, confiscation, and expulsion.”

    • It’s exactly this model minority myth that people use to justify denying Khmer, Lao, and Hmong Americans access to social safety nets.

Well, he is a shill for the White Nationalist movement, so anything he says must be seen with a jaundiced eye to this fact. His comments run along the Aryan Nation route, though quite erudite. That’s the danger with these modern day fascists and White Nationalists, they count on the fact that most young people (18-30) haven’t taken history and are woefully lacking in the knowledge of what came before. I’m old enough to remember fascism and totalitarian regimes. I’m keenly aware of how the manipulations play out and saying the rise of this insipid ideology after so many decades is more than a little worrisome. Sadly, I have to admit that I believe fervently that targeted removal of key figures within the Nazi and White Nationalist movements may be required to ensure they never get a foothold. NEVER AGAIN should mean just that.

        • Silver Badger

I have wondered for a while, why do you have a black bar on your avatar?

          • Jean-Marc in Canada

We are mourning the Democracy that was America. Until 45, his junta and all those in American society who cling to fetters of White Nationalism, Fascism and Authoritarianism are removed from power, we will keep the black bar of mourning as a symbol of our unity with sane Americans and their struggle to attain sanity. It’s just a symbol, but we both believe symbols can sometimes be very powerful.

Full Disclosure: my husbotter is a Brooklynite through and through. Sadly, because of the treatment of those not of a particular hue (As you can see, he’s somewhat darker than yours truly), he has not returned home to visit his mother since Christmas and doesn’t forsee any travel in the near future. We were planning some trips stateside but after the TSA and Border Control started their witch hunts and with 45 in power, we couldn’t, in good conscience, have our visitor dollars going to a corrupt and illegitimate regime. Believe me, he sometimes cries when talking to his mom on the phone and it breaks my heart.

The press actually interview them and treat them like stars. They love the “controversy”: as though the far right had ANY legitimate points to make, any arguments that aren’t based on outright lies and twisted disinformation.

It is the abject FAILURE of the “free” press to do its JOB–unearth and disseminate the TRUTH and defend genuine democracy from duplicitous extremism–that is the MAIN reason democracy is imperilled in this republic.

It’s also the main reason I think, absent a miracle, it’s doomed.

      Is “kek” related to “cuck”?

      • barrixines

No but similarly it comes from madey-uppy alt right Wanker World. Kek means many things. It can be a simple as lol, it can be Pepe the Frog, it can be darkness – the multiple meanings offer plausible denial for little boys not quite big enough to own their anti-Semitism. Basically it’s another one of those handy words that allows you to quickly identify the user as being a tosser with no redeeming qualities. Much like cuck in that respect.

        • BobSF_94117

Isn’t “kek” being used by the anti-alt-right, specifically the LGBT division?

          • barrixines

Yes and no. Both sides use it, as such, it’s meaning comes down to that age old, but totally discarded concept known as context.

      • Jean-Marc in Canada

It’s a derivation of Kuk or Keku. The Nazis/White Nationalists have adopted him as some kind of “god” that personifies “purity” In ancient Egypt, Keku was the darkness that enveloped the souls of men…apropos when you think about it.

      • bs

Protesters Around the Country Demand to See Trump’s Tax Returns

Protesters around the country marched yesterday to demand that Donald Trump release his tax returns. Trump has said that no one cares about them and the march organizers are trying to make it clear that a lot of people do care. Polls have shown that about 80% of Americans want him to release his returns, as presidential candidates and presidents have done for 40 years. Marches took place in well over 100 cities, not only in the U.S., but also in Europe, Japan, and even as far away as New Zealand. The IRS has said there is no legal reason why Trump can’t release his returns. It is simply his personal choice.

Trump’s tax returns would likely give some indication about how rich he really is, and certainly how much income he has received each year. They would also show if he claims interest deductions and from whom. Of special interest is whether he has claimed interest deductions on loans from Russian banks. If it turns out he is deeply indebted to Russian banks, especially banks with close ties to Vladimir Putin, that might begin to explain why he is far more friendly to Russia than most Republicans and why so many people close to him seem to have a lot of business dealings with Russia.

Antifa’s proposition has been clear. If anyone who disagrees with political opinions Antifa wishes to adapt plans to speak at any venue, Antifa will halt the event with violence. Whether or not you agree with Antifa’s proposition, the fallout from yesterday’s events were clear. Antifa was run out of Berkeley, and if they can be run out of Berkeley they can be run out of anywhere. They are no longer a major player. Now, people who support Antifa’s political opinions will have to actually formulate a cogent argument. What a novel idea.
