Georgia Pastor Who Said Pulse Victims “Got What They Deserved” Convicted On 8 Child Molestation Charges

BOOM. The Florida Times-Union reports:

In a matter of an hour, a jury of three men and nine women found Kenneth Adkins guilty Monday of eight child molestation-related charges stemming from his sexual relationship with a teenage girl and boy at his church seven years ago. The controversial, anti-gay pastor showed no emotion as the verdict was read. He will be sentenced April 25. Georgia has strict mandatory minimum sentencing laws; and because Adkins, 57, has a prior record, there’s a possibility he will never again be a free man.

In multiple telephone interviews leading up to his trial, Adkins said he felt a calling to be a preacher and that’s when he landed in Southeast Georgia. It was here that he made enemies for failing to make good on financial promises; for his hard-line Republican stances that tended to put him out of step with other black people; and for seeming inflammatory no matter the subject.

Jacksonville Mayor Lenny Curry tapped Adkins for a panel discussion regarding the possibility of expanding the city’s human rights ordinance to include gays, lesbians and transgender people. Adkins told the Times-Union he was picked by multiple pastors to trumpet their anti-gay, anti-expansion stance. He said he was paid for efforts that included posting lewd and inflammatory caricatures of former mayor Tommy Hazouri in a restroom.

  • Jeffg166

Now he’ll get what he deserves.

  • Lars Littlefield

I’ve been through so much with the Georgia pastors, I hope he got what he deserves.

    • Jeffg166

He will, child molesters are the bottom of the barrel in prison.

      • bkmn

I bet he is begging right now to not be put in the general population in prison.

      • John

Based only on hearsay and comments of those supposedly “in the know” his sentence will be a death sentence. My understanding is that child molesters are not long for this world when the word gets around in the “big house”…

  • Gustav2

Why does this always happen to the anti-gay?

    • Rex

There is something about the ones that protest too much.

      • kcken

Always. Those screaming about morals usually don’t have any.

          • vorpal

Print one with Pastor on it, and I’ll happily go hang them on Protestant churches as well. Protestant churches don’t tend to have priests, so it would make no sense to use this sign on them.

    • SandyS

Exactly why do you feel so threatened and fearful, please?

      • ceeenbee

Because there has never been a documented case of a sexual assault In a public bathroom by a transgendered male or female, yet christo-fascists feel he pathological obsesssion to try and enact laws dictating where they should pee. On the flip side, there are countless cases of priests and clergy committing sexual assault against children of which many, many, many were suredly committed in bathrooms, locker rooms and rectories, yet I see no religious organizations backing laws to prevent them from being in the same bathroom with children.

If we want to protect children, we should address the problem that is real and not the imaginary one.

        • SandyS

I’m so sorry!! I really misread that sign. I didn’t see the cross on the third figure. Sorry for my short-sighted (pun intended) knee-jerk reaction. Now I feel like a heel.

It’s the entire South, both lowland and upland. Though people sometimes stereotype the SE US as all Baptist, the Baptists are only a little over a third of the (religiously affiliated) population, the Methodists just under a third, and the other third is a huge hodge-podge of independent Pentecostal and evangelical fundamentalists.

    • Friday

Time to coin the phrase “Statutory/Forcible Pastoring.”

      • edrex

        “non-consensual pastoring”

        • David Walker

Had that at a hospital. I was asked if I wanted to see a chaplain. No. Next day, in walked a husband and wife chaplain team. They announced who they were, while looking at my partner and me holding hands. I told them I said I didn’t want a chaplain and we had quite a fight before Jack threatened to get the head nurse. On their way out, the female woman wife said they’d pray for us. Jack and I shouted, pretty much in unison, “Don’t!” Things got ironed out with the real chaplain, but if there were ever an example of “non-consensual pastoring,” that could be it.

          • clay

I only remember a chaplain visiting me once while hospitalized (multiple surgeries, months total hospital time)– I was soooooo tripping on morphine that I don’t know if he thought I was a waste of his time, or that I was more “open” to accepting “Jesus as my personal savior and Lord.”

          • Ben in Oakland

            My usual response is…

You can pray for me if I can think for you.

          • swimboy

If someone says “I’ll pray for you,” I usually respond with “And I’ll sacrifice a virgin for you.”

          • edrex

sorry to hear that. i’m sure that shit happens all too often.

          • Chucktech

            “I’ll pray for yew.”

“Yeah, well I’ll THINK for you. Now buzz off. And take your false dead god with you.”

          • Guy Johnson

I’m sorry you had that experience with a hospital chaplain. As a chaplain, the moment you said “No” should have been the end of conversation. My job is not to convert – my job is to listen and respect.

            Again, I’m so sorry.

          • David Walker

Thank you. The med center is also a teaching hospital, including chaplaincy. The med center sent out a questionnaire to ask how they did. I rated everything very highly except for the chaplaincy. I printed out a rant and attached it to the questionnaire. About a week later, I received a letter from the chaplain-in-chief who apologized profusely and asked if he could please treat us to lunch. He explained that it is not the policy of the medical center to have tagteam chaplains, and they were chastised for their behavior. The chaplain-in-chief, Jack, and I had a very free and open discussion during lunch which, I think, benefited all three of us. He said, as you said, the chaplain’s job is to listen and respect. I don’t envy you your job…the stress must be awful, but I suspect it’s very important in your life that you be there to help people at the worst parts of their lives. Thank you for doing that.

          • Oh’behr

Wow, I’m glad you had that experience with the chief chaplain. Yay!

          • David Walker

I’m glad about it, too. I think that was one of those (for me) necessary reminders that there are, in fact, real Christians out there. I may not agree with their theology, but they are actually committed to doing what the passages in the bible that are printed in red tell them to do. I have no problem with Christians. xns, on the others hand, can go fuck themselves.

          • Derrick Johns

Church folks will drive you crazy if you let them. Lord, have mercy

          • Oh’behr

Gosh, that is awful. Wonder where in the heck they got off coming in uninvited and so smug and superior. I hate people like that. Well, not hate; severely dislike. I’m glad they left you and your partner. How creepy. Yet how stressful for patients who don’t want to be seen by a chaplain and then a team of them. I’m glad there was someone above them who can talk to them about their violating boundaries.

          • Derrick Johns

I’m glad y’all stood your ground.

I would enjoy stories like this more if it didn’t involve children being victimized and having their innocence stolen from them forever.

    • Rex

Sad to say, but these two young people will never really recover from this.

    • MBear

Unfortunately we cannot impress to the population at large what a vile and ultimately damaging experience it is for children to expose them to religion and religious people. We cannot tell parents that they are doing something wrong.

The parents are responsible for bringing their spawn into a horrific system of degredation, servitude, moral weakness, perversion, and molestation. It’s sad the children had to deal with religious perversions, but the fact remains: religion is a fetid hellhole of depravity. The children were/are destined to a lifetime of sexual confusion, moral depravity, false hope, pyschological torment, and ultimately spiritual death by being a part of this type of ‘alternative community’.

I would suggest their innocence was already stolen.

(They’re using the NT definition of bishop– one religious leader per town, and since they don’t recognize any other congregations as legitimate as they are . . . they’re the only real religious leader in the city.)

      • safari

        That’s disturbing.

        • clay

It’s why some people throw around the word “cult” when discussing some congregations.

      • NancyP

Nope. In a lot of historically black denominations, “bishop” is the title of the chief pastor of the congregation. There can be many bishops in the same denomination in the same town. Exception: The AME (African Methodist Episcopal) Church is the oldest historically black American denomination, and it is modeled on the slightly more traditional usage of “bishop” to designate a regional leader in liturgically minded churches.

        • Derrick Johns

Correct, Nancy P. Some members of my so -called family are members of The Church Of God In Christ. They have such titles. Bishop Eddie Long of Atlanta I believe was a member of that denomination as he trained teenage boys to become his sex toys. The boys got the last word and monetary settlements. The Bishop Long did a Jimmy Swaggert performance. He cried in church and asked for forgiveness from his congregation. It didn’t work with half of his church family–they left.

Proscript: I have to go to a birthday dinner for my mother this evening. Some of those Church of God In Christ folks will be there. Oh, God, I wish I could fake severe illness before 5:00 pm .

    Pastor, dear…

You will never fix what is wrong with yourself by attacking others. It doesn’t work that way.

Oh, wait, you were trying to deflect attention from yourself. Well that doesn’t work, either.

Have a nice day, dear Mr #066606660666. You will look quite fetching in orange.

The Law of Conservative Hypocrisy: The more a given conservative rages against the sexual immorality of others, the greater the likelihood that he himself is engaged in the very sexual immorality he rails against or worse.

I almost assume that when I hear some conservative gibbering about homosexual this or “loose woman” that, that at that very moment he’s probably stuffed with a butt plug or has a phone full of kiddie porn images or has 3 prostitutes on speed dial. Probably all three.

    • PeterC

      Just like trump.

  • TheManicMechanic

I see you getting prison rape! It’s what you deserve, after all.

Now, hush to all that don’t particularly care for my comment.

But what about my freedom of speech?

Again, if God really existed, an angel would come down out of the clouds and crush this motherfucker’s skull between her hands.

Gotta love my hometown, this guy even tried blaming one of his victims because the guy was gay.

    • M Jackson

Now the gay children are molesting the preachers.

  • Ha! Karma, or maybe your god gave you a royal smack down.

    I will pray for him.

Adkins is an ugly man–physically and mentally. Still, it’s not an excuse to be messin’ with children.

  • Nowhereman

Let’s hope that he gets what HE deserves–life in prison without the possibility of parole.

    • Jukesgrrl

Part of his sentence should be paying for his victims’ therapy.

Well, he’ll certainly be greeted by his fellow inmates with the same kind of “Christian love” he showed to the children he molested. It’s almost enough for me to send up a prayer of thanks…but I’m SO busy…sorry Jesus!

  • Robert Conner

Oh, wow! It’s a “bishop.” When did illiterate mammy-jamming shout-n-holler preachers suddenly get elevated to “bishop” status? Guess “bishop” means you’re fingering some kid. Like “Bishop” Eddie “Jheri Curl” Long who settled out of court.

Christians and Republicans are seriously eroding my opposition to cruel and unusual punishment.

    • No punishment can be a cruel as the lifetime of h3ll they have and intend to forever inflict on us. I have the exact same empathy for them as they do for us – none, zero, nada, zilch, nil, zip, etc.

      • -M-

Oh, I have no empathy for them. Just a general moral stance against torture even for people who deserve it, although I might still have a list of people I’d be willing to put through a wood chipper feet first anyway.

    • Black Star Ranch

I have the same feeling towards idiots who can read.

  • CottonBlimp

I wonder if the police are ever going to catch on that they can always, *always* find dirt in these people’s closets.

You don’t hate people so much for so little reason unless your morals are fucked up in general.

It’s not just priests and ministers. My son’s old Boy Scout Master was also arrested. Luckily, he never targeted my son. But my son did say that when he first joined, the man singled him out to “talk.” He asked about my son’s home life, if everything was okay at home. He asked if my husband and I were together or divorced. He asked if my son and his dad had a good relationship, invited my son to talk to him about us if things were not good with us. Luckily, my husband and myself were a very “child-centered” couple. They came first…always. My son was and is a very self-confident, self-assured, fellow. He and his dad were always best buddies. The second my son told this man how great his dad was, the man then completely ignored him. All of the boys molested by this man were those who came from broken homes.
