Twitter Drops Lawsuit After Trump Administration Withdraws Summons To Unmask Anti-Trump Account

The San Jose Mercury News reports:

Twitter dropped its legal fight with the federal government Friday after U.S. Customs and Border Protection reversed course and withdrew a summons seeking to unmask the users of an account critical of the Trump administration. “Because the summons has now been withdrawn, Twitter voluntarily dismissed without prejudice all claims against defendant,” said to a court document filed in the U.S. District Court of Northern California.

The lawsuit, which was filed on Thursday, set up the potential for another clash between a Silicon Valley tech firm and the government over digital privacy and free speech. Twitter claimed in its lawsuit that CBP and the Department of Homeland Security were trying to illegally use investigative tools to force Twitter to reveal the identity of the users behind the account @ALT-USCIS, which is also known as @ALT Immigration.
