REPORT: Trump Family Needs Strain Secret Service

The New York Times reports:

Eleven weeks into the Trump presidency, the Secret Service is grappling with how to constrain the rising costs and unexpected strain that have come with protecting a new first family as large, mobile and high-profile as any in modern American history.

To keep up, dozens of agents from New York and field offices across the country are being temporarily pulled off criminal investigations to serve two-week stints protecting members of the Trump family, including the first lady and the youngest son in Manhattan’s Trump Tower.

Others, already assigned to the highly selective presidential protective division, had hoped for relief after a grueling election year. That hope has evaporated as they work more overtime hours and spend long stretches away from home because of the Trump family’s far-flung travel.

And in Washington, agency leaders are already negotiating for tens of millions of dollars in supplemental funding to help offset the sky-high costs of securing Trump Tower and other high-profile family assets like Mar-a-Lago in Florida. It is a figure that will only continue to rise.

Send Donald a bill it will stop.

    • bkmn

Was thinking along the same line – bill him for Secret Service until he divests from his business (and not the faux-divestiture of turning things over to his kids – a real blind trust.)

    • Frostbite

Why would it stop? He’ll just stiff us on the bill claiming the SS wasn’t up to his quality standards and let them sue him like everyone else.

    • RoFaWh

Somewhere I’ve read that the President has to pay for the meals he is served in the WH. State dinners excepted, I imagine.

  • BeaverTales

Subsidizing the vacations and lifestyles of billionaires with tax rates lower than mine. I’m feeling so happy about paying income taxes in 9 days…not.

  • lymis

And more than a little of that cost is that the taxpayers are paying Trump rent for space in Trump Tower and Mar-a-lago, and golf cart rentals, and no doubt, inflated meal prices at his own properties. Even if it made sense for that arrangement, we should be getting them at cost, not at retail.

  • David L. Caster

Well, at least that’s consistent with the rest of the Trump administration.

  • The_Wretched

The budgets are tight this year and we can’t afford the arts, science, clean water, clean air, safe food, food for the eldery, food for the poor, healthcare for almost any one etc. In light of these issues, the SS is constrained to cover only Trump and only at the WH except for a bi-anneal vacation not lasting longer than 1 day. He may, however, visit Bush’s ranch or secure military sites at will.

    /fixed.

    • james1200

We’re a banana republic now, so we gut social programs to pay for tax cuts for the rich and to redistribute wealth from the bottom to the top, like every third world hellhole does. Welcome to ‘murrica!

  • PickyPecker

More cost effective would be GITMO for the lot of them.

    • safari

      Indeed.

Heard a story on NPR last week that there are real divisions over how much the US should do to protect Trump properties around the world, since they are essentially targets for terrorism now. I think the US should do nothing, it was his decision to do business outside the US.

    • crewman

It was his decision to drag his conflicts of interest into the presidency. He should have divested.

    • Strepsi

      Absolutely. Do nothing.
The Secret Service needs to protect Donald, Melania and Barron (and make them move to DC for godsakes) but NOT Uday, Qusay, and Complicitay. I don’t think anybody has yet thought of protecting Tiffany.

      • prixator

        Tiffanay?

    • StraightGrandmother

Off topic but since you mentioned NPR, did you listen to This American Life’s latest podcast “Shittown?” You can listen to it over the internet do you don’t have to download it here-

If you Google “STown” you will see RAVE reviews on it, I listened to all 7 chapters and it is GREAT!

Hi, SG! Good to see you! XO

    • kaydenpat

Agreed. Why can’t he pay for his own security? Only he benefits from those benefits.

    • Miji

If he wants to protect them, he can divest and take his name off of them. Of course now we would have to monitor the sales or there would be Russian oligarchs lined up to pay twice as much as they’re worth.

  • Ninja0980

Make him hire his own security, he can afford it after all.

    • safari

He already has his own security team at the white house. And, we learned, his long time body guard is now apparently an Adidas-clad diplomat that went with Jared to Iraq.

  • KnownDonorDad

You’re allegedly a billionaire, you pick up the extra costs. I wonder how many big NIH grants could have come out of that money.

Let’s also remember that the secret service buys Donald’s products when they are on detail with him at places he owns. We’re paying him to protect him.

    • DaddyRay

That is what makes it so outrageous

I also have a problem sending Secret Service to protect Uday and Qusay while they conduct non-governement related personal business

      • marshlc

What kind of secret service protection have the adult children of other presidents gotten? It’s not unprecedented for there to be people like Uday and Qusay around – what happened in the past?

    • kaydenpat

    • Joe in PA

And when they “entertain” at places like Mar-A-Lago…don’t we all pay for that TO Mar-A-Lago? AKA trump? I have never this talked about. 🙁

  • geoffalnutt

Please! This is not just ANY crime family. It’s TRUMP. They have special wants and needs. It’s hard work reducing a country to a pile of smoking rubble. Ivanka even broke a nail!

  • Rex

Trump wants to cut the budget that provides basic needs for average Americans,
I say he can start with himself. If the rest of us have to do more with less, than he can too. If he’s so damned wealthy, then set an amount for SS protection and he pays anything above that. This is one thing about this vulgar pig that really pisses me off. People don’t have decent housing, can’t pay medical bills, drive roads that are like a lunar surface, have to work in their retirement years, etc, etc, and he’s lives like royalty, it’s disgusting.

  • JWC

Just contact Eric Prince I am quite sure he could whip up a security detail and let Donny payfor it all Secret Service should be for #45 and the First Tramp only

  • i wonder if there’s a nuclear option for this problem…

    • billbear1961

      There should be.

  • What I want to know is how many members of the Secret Service have outright quit rather than being forced to protect the Cheeto-faced shitgibbon…

  • KQCA

Why protect any of them? We’re providing free housing and all the needed comforts at the White House. If the others voluntarily take on a cabinet role, let them tend to themselves. We didn’t elect them nor do we want them.

  • StraightGrandmother

The story that really , well I’ll say it, pissed me off was the story about Don Jr’s son getting driven from Connecticut back to Manhattan by the secret service. It was the story about the SS agent getting in trouble for taking a selfie with the boy who had fallen asleep on the ride home. Because the agent took a selfie that indicates that no mother, father or nanny was accompanying the Trump boy, I wanna say he is around age 8, or else the agent would not have taken the pic, right? The story said Don Jr owns property in Connecticut. I was thinking maybe the kid was at a sleepover or something. Or mom was staying in Connecticut and grandson had to go back to Manhattan to go to school the next day or something.

WHY are we the taxpayers essentially providing FREE limo service with a chauffeur to the President’s, unaccompanied by family members, grandchildren? I don’t recall when George Bush Sr was President that George & Laura, & Jeb and his wife’s kids (the Presidents grand children) got Secret Service.

  • Slippy_World

This is what living in a kleptocracy looks like.
    kleptocracy
    [klep-tok-ruh-see]

    noun, plural kleptocracies.
    1.
a government or state in which those in power exploit national resources and steal; rule by a thief or thieves.

    • billbear1961

This is what a republic with NO self-respect looks like, TD.

In a REAL democracy, the GOP’s THEFT of a SCOTUS seat–their act of SEDITION in VIOLATING the Constitution by refusing to advise and consent, for nearly a YEAR, on ANY nominee put forward by the POTUS doing his constitutional DUTY to fill a vacancy on the Court–would be met with MASSIVE protests in the streets.

The citizens of this country are gutless COWARDS, who don’t give a DAMN about their own Constitution, the Rule of LAW, genuine DEMOCRACY!!

The current so-called “president” may well be a TRAITOR and is certainly in violation of the Emoluments Clause. His TAX RETURNS would go a long way in making his guilt–or innocence–CLEAR.

Yet the congressional Democrats, the press and the PEOPLE do not DEMAND, vociferously, relentlessly, on a DAILY basis, that those tax returns be RELEASED!!

The regime LIES to the people and the press on a DAILY basis; it engages in SLANDERS. This contemptuous, profoundly undemocratic behaviour is tolerated by SHEEP. The press PRETENDS they’re not a pack of pathological LIARS. They PRETEND Trump isn’t obviously intellectually and morally UNFIT for office!!

The Weimar Republic DIED because it had no STAUNCH defenders. The SAME is happening HERE!!

Soon the fascists will complete their consolidation of power–they will control the COURTS. And NO CRIME will be forbidden them!!

This Republic is DYING for want of the WILL to DEFEND IT!!

      • TampaDink

Agreed, Bill Bear! I try to maintain a tiny amount of optimism that the Russia scandal will topple this administration…before it is too late.

It is not worth a damn bit. So unfortunate that the Americans are stuck with this shambles of the political system. I hope they recover quickly, but first get rid of this Usurper.

    • RoFaWh

The difficult question: exactly what is wrong with the American system of government that has allowed a demented narcissist to become President? What can be done to forestall repetitions?

To answer my own question, add to the necessary qualifications “must have been a member of a state legislature for a minimum of fifteen years; or governor or vice governor of a state for a minimum of ten years; or a US senator for twelve years; or a member of the House of Representatives for ten years.”

That’s not a very good proposal. Such wordiness is inappropriate in a constitution, so merely an enabling clause “Congress may…”

“To keep up, dozens of agents from New York and field offices across the country are being temporarily pulled off criminal investigations to serve two-week stints protecting members of the Trump family…”

Let’s not forget that protecting former and current national leaders and their families is not the only thing they do. As noted in Wikipedia their other primary area of responsibility is “financial Crimes, covering missions such as prevention and investigation of counterfeit U.S. currency, U.S. treasury securities, and investigation of major fraud.”

Trump probably figures the straining of the Secret Service’s resources is a feature, not a bug.

  • MonochromeMouse

They need to say the taxpayers are only going to pay to protect his lazy ass at the white house and at camp david, anywhere else and he should have to pay 100% out of pocket for his security, see how often he goes golfing then. Same goes for spoiled brat and malaria, the trump family should be paying to keep them safe in their ivory tower not the taxpayer.
