AUSTRALIA: Major Companies Launch “Acceptance Ring” Campaign For Marriage Equality [VIDEO]

The Australian reports:

Some of the country’s biggest businesses have upped the ante in the crusade for marriage equality by asking Australians to wear a specially designed “acceptance ring” until same-sex marriage is legalised. Led by accommodation provider Airbnb and supported by Qantas, ANZ, Fairfax Media and Foxtel, the Until We Belong campaign has been billed as the “most public declaration for marriage equality” so far.

The initiative calls on Australians to signal their support for same-sex couples by committing to wearing the ring, created by designer Marc Newson. Airbnb Australia country manager Sam McDonagh said the campaign would involve the distribution of “hundreds of thousands” of the distinctive black metal rings to its hosts and guests, business partners and “key influencers”.

Qantas staff and cabin crew would wear them, he said, while Google Australia has also provided rings for its 1300 staff to wear. “Our goal is to build momentum around the issue of marriage equality and spark those conversations about acceptance,” Mr McDonagh said. The move is likely to fire up the debate about the role of corporations as lobbyists for contentious social causes, which has attracted criticism from some conservative politicians and religious leaders in light of the recent public hounding of brewer Coopers into pledging support for Australian Marriage Equality.

  • Lumpy Gaga

Complicated. Current PM(?) wants to run a mail-in referendum on teh ghey marriage.

Smart Money says that’s not a good idea. Does a campaign like this push AU closer to that??

    • barrixines

Seeing as Australians were smart enough to face off the plebiscite (it isn’t a referendum) I doubt they’d then be seduced by a bit of gimcrack jewellery designed to promote Air BnB.

  • bkmn

Come on Aussies…time to join the rest of the world (you too Germany).

    • Frostbite

Yeah, I’m tired of hearing that Germany is the new “leader of the free world” when they don’t even have legalized same-sex marriage.

      • zhera

Oh please. How many years have USA been ‘leader of the free world’ without having legal SSM?

        • j.martindale

          Flawed leadership.

          • <-I get paid over $87 per hour working from home with 2 kids at home. • Frostbite

well it has it now and you don’t hear that any more about the US. germany wants the title? step up.

          • ChrisMorley

I really don’t think Germany wants the title.
MSM is confering it on Germany because it has noticed tRump is not up to the Precedenting role.

Years ago I bought 2 prop 8 rings done to raise money for the fight after it passed. They are black and with the word “Equality” and an equal sign on it. I think they were $5.00 each. I put 1 away to not be scratched. I put 1 on and have never taken it off. I am not superstitious, and am not sure how I feel about luck, but we won our first marriage equality decision within a month or a bit more. I do not think I will ever take it off.

  • bsinps

    Excellent!!

  • barrixines

Yes, because you really aren’t supporting a cause unless you go out and buy some made up bullshit product promoting a company that is a blight on every city it gets a hold in.

    • AJayne

I was ready to say the same, but sounds like they are being given away, not sold – and no corporate promotion on the actual product…

      • barrixines

They are actually selling them, I checked but it isn’t really the money issue – supposedly Air BnB aren’t making a profit from them. The corporate promotion is here in this article and is in every article I have read about it. Young people in Spain, gay and straight, cannot afford to get married. One of the big reasons is they can’t afford to move out from their parents. In a city like Barcelona, the rise of Air BnB is a major factor in property price hikes (aside from all the other nuisances of by-passing zoning restrictions and having tourist accommodation in residential blocks.)

And no-one here is giving Foxtel the side-eye? Yes, that Fox.

  • zhera

I think it’s fascinating (in a WTF is wrong with them way) that Australia’s and Germany’s populations are so liberal on this yet they can’t make SSM legal. Why?

    • John Ruff

      Christians

    • boatboy_srq

Consider that the US SSM legalisation was via SCOTUS not legislation, that DOMA was enacted nearly two decades before Obergefell, that Prop 8 was a mere nine years ago and that Congress and many state legislatures continue to search for ways around accommodation. It’s not like the US has been a bastion of progressivism.

  • DuaneBidoux

A ring! Cool idea. Why didn’t we think of that?!

    • Silver Badger

      We did. At least twice,.

      • DuaneBidoux

Well I am straight and apparently the friends I did have weren’t too tapped in to the movement.

        • Silver Badger

Oh you poor man! If you decide you want to change, you can. There are people on this site who can help you.

          • DuaneBidoux

I think we can all agree on this deal: I’ll respect you if you respect me.

          • Silver Badger

Forgot the sarcasm indicator. /s Sorry.

  • max100

That dad’s testimony….i think i got something in my eye, excuse me….

Priscilla Queen of the Desert would have had a much cooler ending if this had happened 30 years ago.

This reminds me of the logo design of China Life (a Chinese life insurance and annuity company), which has a similar symbolism.

i don’t know. looks like the nipple ring I used to sport.

  • John Ruff

If it hasn’t happened by now, it ain’t gonna happen for some time to come.

  • Tomcat

The design of that ring is a danger to anyone that works with machinery.
The chances of it squeezing together and cutting into the finger is MUCH greater than a standard full ring. I suggest anyone that wants to wear this ring only wear it when doing nothing and take it off to work.

  • Mikey

    goddammit! who’s cutting onions again?

  • Neil Aitchison

The ring is just an easier way for LGBTIQAP+ people to find new sex partners….and it doubles up to flush out Christian employees who won’t wear the ring so they can be bullied (then sacked). Btw, if only married people “belong”, then does that mean all the single people “don’t belong”?….hmmm…..someone didn’t think very hard when they came up with the “Until We All Belong” propaganda slogan.

  • Neil Aitchison

    “Equality Pens” For Sale….read on:

Seeing as someone is making an easy buck out of the incomplete “Until We All Belong” ring, I am planning to sell “Equality Pens” without ink in them because they are full of “equality” – if you buy one, you will feel “equal” ($100 per pen). The pens are old, unworking pens that have been thrown away so I have picked them up for free. If you buy one of my recycled “Equality Pens”, you will be feeling “equal” AND save the planet at the same time (….ok, make it $200 per pen). Oh, and if you don’t think the pens make a difference, you are right – just like the incomplete “Until We All Belong” rings don’t make a difference. I just want to sucker you out of your money if you are gullible enough.
