NEW HAMPSHIRE: House Panel Rejects Ex-Gay Torture Ban Upon Urging Of Rep Who Does Ex-Gay Torture

The Concord Monitor reports:

New Hampshire won’t ban gay conversion therapy for minors this year, after a House committee voted this week to hold back the bill. In a 13-8 vote, the House Health, Human Services and Elderly Affairs committee retained the legislation Tuesday over concerns that it limits parental rights and counseling for youth working through their sexuality, members said.

The decision marks another setback for LGBT-rights groups, which earlier this year saw the Republican-led House defeat a bill to expand anti-discrimination protections for transgender people. “It’s another year to go without protections for people,” said Democratic Rep. Renny Cushing, a co-sponsor on both pieces of legislation. Both bills had already cleared the Republican-led Senate, and sponsors included Majority Leader Jeb Bradley.

Republican Rep. Mark Pearson, who co-founded New Creation Healing Center, said all members of the committee opposed such therapies, but the proposed legislation went “much further.” “On numerous occasions young people have wished to explore with our counselors or senior medical personnel various sexual and romantic feelings,” he said in a written statement. “Had this bill passed, such helpful discussions would have subjected our professionals to discipline by their respective state licensing boards.”

Also from the Monitor:

The bill doesn’t apply to unlicensed therapists and would include religious protections. One committee member, however, raised concern with a section that bans licensed therapists from efforts to reduce sexual or romantic attractions. “Every one of my senior staff members has and continues to do this when an under-18 person asks for help to work through these things, when they say, ‘Would you help me stop having that attraction towards that person of my gender,’” said Rep. Mark Pearson. “Would you believe that I am grateful that my staff does this because if my staff didn’t do this, I know some back-alley people and their techniques are not good.”

Hate group leader Tony Perkins celebrates:

When FRC’s Peter Sprigg speaks, legislators listen! A month after delivering some of the best testimony in the sexual reorientation therapy debate, the New Hampshire House killed a bill to outlaw the counseling for young people. By a 13-8 vote, the state’s Health, Human Services, and Elder Affairs Committee sent LGBT activists packing after an intense effort to ban the voluntary therapy.

In the end, legislators agreed that the measure would have severely limited parents’ rights and, just as importantly, deprived kids of the help they earnestly want. As Peter pointed out at the time, the attacks on this kind of counseling usually have nothing to do with their effectiveness and everything to do with politics. Thank goodness that in New Hampshire, common sense — not political correctness — prevailed!

  • Mark

a fucking crying shame. how many more kids have to die before they fucking get it.

    • Ross

      They will never get it.

      • Sissy Spacedout

When they’re sent to the cheapest old age home possible, they might.

        • Stogiebear

And little Gaybees remember, when you drop your elderly folks off at that nightmare of an old folks home: you don’t actually have to check them in, just drop them off at the door, drive away, and let them fend for themselves. Builds character, especially if there’s not really a place there arranged for them.

I recall my grandmother asking me to wheel her down to the “activity room”. I did. Everyone there was snoozing….er, well…I guess they were snoozing…..

          • narutomania

Of course they were snoozing! And mummy and daddy took Fido down to live on a “farm” because he’ll be happier there!

They don’t want to get it.

    • bkmn

They don’t want to get it and never will.

    • There has to be a follow up to what happens after these kids attend. We need a camera crew (blacking out faces of kids) to tell their stories.

    • Ninja0980

      They never will.
Their religious beliefs state that LGBT are sinners and NOTHING will change their minds.

    • RJ Bone

They don’t care about body counts because it’s NEVER they fault. That’s the OTHER people, not us. WE won’t BEAT you, we just electrocute you, starve you and fill your head with self hatred. But gawd loves you, so it’s all okay. Now hold still or the electrodes will leave marks and there can’t be visible marks.

  • Ross

“In the end, legislators agreed that the measure would have severely limited parents’ rights…”

    WHAT THE FUCK?

My parents did NOT have the right to starve me, nor sexually assault me, nor lock in the basement for months on end, nor rent me out for prostitution.

There are a LOT of things parents are not allowed to do to their kids.

    And torture should be one.

I remember in the 1960s when teachers FORCED left-handed kids to write right-handed.

THAT was outlawed but not sexual torture?

I know a gay couple. With two young kids.

They are REALLY worried because it seems like the kids are heterosexual.

I suggested that they contact a group I heard about which will make the kids gay.

    2. Tony PerKKKins applauds this move. That says all there needs to be said on this issue.

    3. Have Pearson ever helped a young person to be comfortable in his or hers homosexuality? If it doesn’t go both ways then it’s not the clients’ well-being that is the goal.

    4.

      1. Pearson’s group only uses talk therapy, rather than cold showers and electro-shock. Meaning, they only cause depression; the death they cause is only indirect.

      2. Yep.

      3. Pearson’s group has never helped a young person to be comfortable in her or his sexuality, let alone homosexuality. Their client’s well-being is NEVER their goal (or only “pie in the sky, bye and bye”). They’re interested in their God’s well-being, instead.

    • McSwagg

The laws are irrelevant if the bruises and welts don’t show. I can tell you that from personal experience.

      • clay

but we should be able to change that for the state licensed therapists.

      • margaretpoa

Le sigh…. as can I… I also went through a family unit based version of conversion therapy wherein everybody agreed to shun me until such a time as I began behaving as I was expected to.

    • To the Hampshire Terrorist “New Creation” please let the young people read this Dr. Laura letter (I am sure that you will).

      Dear Dr. Laura:

Thank you for doing so much to educate people regarding God’s Law. I have learned a great deal from your show, and try to share that knowledge with as many people as I can. When someone tries to defend the homosexual lifestyle, for example, I simply remind them that Leviticus 18:22 clearly states it to be an abomination… end of debate.

I do need some advice from you, however, regarding some other elements of God’s Laws and how to follow them.

Leviticus 25:44 states that I may possess slaves, both male and female, provided they are purchased from neighbouring nations. A friend of mine claims that this applies to Mexicans, but not Canadians. Can you clarify? Why can’t I own Canadians?

I would like to sell my daughter into slavery, as sanctioned in Exodus 21:7. In this day and age, what do you think would be a fair price for her?

I know that I am allowed no contact with a woman while she is in her period of menstrual unseemliness – Lev. 15: 19-24. The problem is how do I tell? I have tried asking, but most women take offence.

When I burn a bull on the altar as a sacrifice, I know it creates a pleasing odor for the Lord – Lev. 1:9. The problem is my neighbours. They claim the odor is not pleasing to them. Should I smite them?

I have a neighbour who insists on working on the Sabbath. Exodus 35:2. clearly states he should be put to death. Am I morally obligated to kill him myself, or should I ask the police to do it?

A friend of mine feels that even though eating shellfish is an abomination – Lev. 11:10, it is a lesser abomination than homosexuality. I don’t agree. Can you settle this? Are there ‘degrees’ of abomination?

Lev. 21:20 states that I may not approach the altar of God if I have a defect in my sight. I have to admit that I wear reading glasses. Does my vision have to be 20/20, or is there some wiggle-room here?

Most of my male friends get their hair trimmed, including the hair around their temples, even though this is expressly forbidden by Lev. 19:27. How should they die?

I know from Lev. 11:6-8 that touching the skin of a dead pig makes me unclean, but may I still play football if I wear gloves?

My uncle has a farm. He violates Lev. 19:19 by planting two different crops in the same field, as does his wife by wearing garments made of two different kinds of thread (cotton/polyester blend). He also tends to curse and blaspheme a lot. Is it really necessary that we go to all the trouble of getting the whole town together to stone them? Lev. 24:10-16. Couldn’t we just burn them to death at a private family affair, like we do with people who sleep with their in-laws? (Lev. 20:14)

I know you have studied these things extensively and thus enjoy considerable expertise in such matters, so I am confident you can help.

Thank you again for reminding us that God’s word is eternal and unchanging.

      Your adoring fan,

  • “New Creation” – the name alone guarantees that the Bible will be thumped. I will post this once again for any person that still thinks homosexuality is abnormal. Please know, that in March 2016, the World Psychiatric Association, consisting of 182 nations – put their scientific signatures on a declaration. It was addressed to the United Nations and world leaders. They stated that homosexuality CANNOT be changed and it is, therefore, NOT a choice! A young person being shown passages from Leviticus, must understand that this ‘abomination’ is one of many that these
“Christians” do not keep today. (eating shrimp, marrying a virgin, stoning a non-virgin etc). If they are shown Genesis with the destruction of Sodom and Gorromorah, they must know that in the Book of Daniel, these cities were destroyed because of not feeding the poor, looking after widows etc. These young people must know that both books were written 3,500 years ago, when starting a fire was done by rubbing two flints together. After cooking the meal, these people would live in a Bedouin tent or cave. http://stories4hotbloodedlesbians.com a site for all women. (men are welcome, too) P.S The World Psychiatric Association and other bodies world-wide have pointed out the psychological damage done when parents cannot accept a child as he/she is in their sexual orientation! I really don’t care if an individual who once thought of themselves as gay ends up with a person of the opposiite sex. But that isn’t what this is about.

There is a huge amount of societal pressure to conform to expected “norms,” an unbelievable amount of pressure to be “like everybody else.”

So men and women who have been abused their whole lives, who only want to fit in, seek counseling like this, but it only adds to their pain, doesn’t relieve it. But in the meantime they rack up incredible damage on other people, their spouses and children.

This is not a zero sum game, where it is just about one person. It wrecks lives, not just for the patient, but everyone connected to them, and failing at ‘being straight’ can cause a lot of damage. People kill themselves over this stuff.

The adult aspect is difficult for me. Adults can be expected to act even if it really hurts those around them from substance use to full out physical abuse. They are responsible for their own actions… good or bad, let’s try to maximize what they can do legally.

Minors, though… this is just child abuse.

So far as I know, these conversion therapy laws only effect minors. If you are an adult and wish to pursue conversion therapy, have at it. That is your choice, though IMO an Ill advised one. Read a few of the testimonials by people who went rhrough it. They promise results they can’t deliver, but it is never their fault but yours for “failing” to be heterosexual.

And really, in the grand scheme of things, who cares if you are straight or not? It effects the future of the planet…. how??

        • safari

          I agree.

      • greenmanTN

It’s an embarrassing admission but my dad hit me once in my life, an open handed slap. And in a way I kinda deserved it, I would have slapped me too. So I grabbed the scalpel from my brother’s high school dissection kit and said “If you EVER hit me again I will cut your fucking throat.”

Quiet and timid are not at all the same thing.

We ended up crying together, so believe it or not this is one of my fondest memories of bonding with my father. He was the first parent I came out too and he said “I would rather cut off my own arm than reject you.” That’s a pretty cool reaction, right? And at least I got a story out of it, so win/win.

  • That_Looks_Delicious

OT – This is my first time on JMG and Disqus with Opera. So far so good, although it seems to be slightly slower than Firefox or Chrome. But the added security should compensate that.

    • safari

Why Opera over Firefox? Mozilla is practically the standard bearer of security… they even are trying to implement browser binary integrity checking to avoid people getting malicious versions of their browser.

      • That_Looks_Delicious

The sell-the-people law that every Republican in Congress (except Rand Paul) just voted for.

        http://notagrouch.com/congress-killed-privacy-opera-back-free-vpn/

        • safari

I’m not judging your choice (much) but, the crux is this line:

Again, I don’t know how secure this VPN is. SurfEasy Inc provides it.

VPNs make it harder to directly read information… unless the VPN is compromised, which is something that if I were the NSA would be a prime target. In short, a free VPN makes me feel uneasy about the “P” part of it.

          • safari

(Especially if you are a minority user of the browser in the grand scheme of all internet users — it makes a very easy signature to highlight. Perhaps it’s just me, though.)

      • Lazycrockett

Opera does have a VPN option in its setting. I use it when I download stuff, still a bit of a noob with it. Though I use Chrome for most of my web browsing. Firefox for some reason just isn’t all that stable for me. Updates will correct some errors but then create new ones.

  • Nic Peterson

They’re concerned about back alley providers filling the void? Why haven’t they turned the illegal providers over to authorities? Monsters!

  • Blake J Butler

This doesn’t happen very often in the Arkansas Capital. State Senator Stephanie Flowers (D) tells the chamber “To hell with your guns!” over a asinine law that allows for guns to be openly carried in a variety of places, especially where alcohol is being served.

    She let them have it.

    • Sissy Spacedout

      Goddamn, that’s awesome.

    • Adam King

Why did she end with, “I’m voting for the damn bill. I don’t want to…”?

      • Blake J Butler

It was to allow for places such as businesses to have exemptions to where they don’t have to allow guns if they don’t want to. Stadiums the same way, an exception they added to the bill this afternoon.

Guns were going to be available regardless, but this would allow for exemptions.

And if airline passengers have certain rights, then why the hell don’t kids?

    • The assignment of ‘personhood’ has been cynically manipulated for generations to make the monstrous and abominable accepted, but also to advance certain agendas. Witness:

      – Fetus = Person; woman carrying said fetus = invisible
      – Baby = Not a person
      – Toddler, child, teen = Not a person*
      – * exception = If teen is a young black male, he’s considered a dangerous grown adult criminal for the purposes of being arrested or shot by police
      – 18 year old female = Provisional person, unless or until she becomes preggers, then go back to the top of the list
      – 18 year old male = If white and preferably Christian then definitely a person, otherwise probably not unless it’s for the purpose of arrest or being shot
      – Foreign adult, male or female = Person only if white and Christian

It is odd – watching the clips of Clinton Watts testimony in front of congress looked like something out of the 1970’s.

  • Ninja0980

One of my cousin’s friends from college just came out as a lesbian and is divorcing her husband of six years.
As she put it to my friend and others, she tried so hard to make herself straight due to her religious family and truly bought the BS that if she prayed and married a man, her true feelings would go away.
As I’m sure some of you can attest here and as we all know from countless stories, they didn’t.
Like so many other people, we have another story of needless heartbreak and anger, and all because of what some book from 6,000 years ago says.

    • safari

I’m hoping one of my cousins does the same. She is in her second trimester. She married a selfish man who listens to most of her phone calls.

      • safari

        Because Jesus.

    • From a very early age, I tried and tried to “want what I was supposed to want.”

It didn’t take. Result was misery, loneliness, and even when I found a relationship, it was mostly a sham from my side of it. Didn’t come out until my early 30s…at which point my father decided he was going to try to have me killed.

Luckily that didn’t take either, but it wasn’t without him trying to make it happen at least one confirmed time I was able to learn eventually.

Wishing the best of luck, fortune, and love to your cousin’s friend.

      • safari

I’m shocked to hear your story. My coming out was much easier. I’m glad you are still here 🙂

        • I have many, many flaws, but one I know how is that which tried but failed to kill me made me stronger. Not nearly as strong as I’d like, but stronger.

        • fuzzybits

I don’t think I was ever in. And I grew up in a small town. It was the 70’s and even in my town I found out many of my friends were bi.

My sister, who came out as a lesbian as a teenager, decided to get married to a man.

        • Sissy Spacedout

My dad called her a whore when he found out she was dating him.

          • safari

            euh?

          • Sissy Spacedout

Yah, it was strange to listen to a Christian (yes, Dad was a Christian) speak about her like that. Really fucking strange. To be fair, she did marry him for his money, after a long series of disastrous lesbian relationships.

prepare for your old age, long before you get there. 🙂

          • safari

            *sigh*

          • Sissy Spacedout

The only ‘good’ part of the story is that dad accepted her as a lesbian, but objected to her using sex to get a comfortable life.

OT: This just makes me more irritated with the whole NON-STOP talk about coal miners because a lot of other industries employ way more people.

    http://jezebel.com/j-c-penney-employs-more-people-than-coal-mines-do-1793896058

“For that year, there were 76,572 employed by coal. Skiing, an industry that accounted for 75,036 jobs, may have overtaken them by now. If not, perhaps the Trump administration could spend $15 billion on building a weather machine to produce more snow, that also coincidentally runs on coal.

Other industries that were catching up to coal in employment include nail salons and the ancient art of bowling. Whole Foods alone employed 72,650 and J.C. Penney a whopping 114,000. When was the last time you were in a J.C. Penney? There are, of course, many areas where the distribution of coal mines is far higher than retail outlets, and the loss of those jobs can be devastating to the area. But not as devastating to the nation as it would be if Walmart closed, since data shows they employed 2.2. million people.”

I don’t have a problem retraining or moving or helping coal miners get new employment but honestly, when one retail company outhires an entire industry, well, the media should talk WAY, WAY more about retail workers who would probably love a higher minimum wage and probably where a lot of coal miners are going to wind up working at ANYWAY because other countries are switching to goddamn solar & wind and natural gas because coal is dirty as hell and CAN’T be cleaned up.

    • clay

PA’s skiing / winter outdoor sports industry now relies entirely on artificial snow. The conservative estimates of climate change for this state are that there will be nowhere in the state with >1in snow cover that stays for >1 week.

      Thanks mostly to coal.

Nunes needs to me reminded who he’s attached to, along with treason, and his bitch of a boss that probably won’t last the first year of his presidential term. My concern though is the district in his favor more so, it voted for Trump 52-42, though voted for Kamala Harris by 52.7-47.3, though to be fair those were both Democratic candidates in that race.

And if experience is an issue,

Did Trump have any? Georgie would have more temperament and not involved with a foreign nation tampering with our election process.

      • Skeptical_Inquirer

I figure any GOP pearl grabbers need to be told to shut hell up because they voted in a pussy grabbing adulterer who uses the Bible as a doorstop and is totally beholden to a foreign hostile power. I figure anybody who it bothers would never have voted for any kind of Dem anyway.

Yes a video of him stoking a hard cock is going to play well in Fresno and Tulare county. Ok whatever you say. Because that’s what there is. Easily found on Google. Those are the facts. I’m not a prude and I’m a fan of George’s . But it will come up.

          • Skeptical_Inquirer

I’ve seen conservatives vote for a man who badgered his mistress to get an abortion to save his marriage, and a man who reputedly got off wearing diapers and visited hookers and recently there was a man cheating on his wife with his cousin who was also his patient.

Yeah, I’m sure a lot of people will hold it against him because he’s not a straight Republican doing shitty straight Republican things. But I still think those same people are a bunch of hypocritical pearl clutchers who have repeatedly shown that they don’t really give a shit about sexual behavior as long as you got a damn R next to your name.

Also, I’d rather SOMEONE ran against him because according to Wiki, Nunes ran unopposed in 2016, which is bullshit. NOW, if the Dems happen to scrounge someone much more likely to win then that’s one thing, but I’d rather George run than nobody running . . . AGAIN.

  • Ginger Snap

Oh NH you can be such a disappointment to me.

  • BeaverTales

“Parental rights” can’t force kids to undergo an unproven medical therapy for a condition that isn’t considered a disease.

The kid has the right to refuse any treatments s/he wishes, and should be able to sue for malpractice well beyond the statute of limitations if they are a minor.

  • of course the problem is religion. he got to me a little bit, with the ‘back alley’ line. he’s not wrong; he’s out about what he does and some of the ones who aren’t, bc they know it would get them in trouble bc of the way they do it, are creepy and scary and we don’t want confused members of the community going to them.

the problem is religion. specifically, fundie religions. we can’t make it all go away, but we can do all we can to prevent people from joining the cultish sects of their given faiths. if they don’t do that, they don’t get fucked in the head like the poor kids who go to these places are. those pitiful souls are forced there by adults who have problems of their own, 99% of them caused by religion, extremist religion.

i don’t mean to sound too clinical, but in a way i do. it’s obvious this is torture. it’s an industry that if it had to do with any other minority group, would be illegal. we can’t be victims and we have to eliminate the source of something that is killing members of our community. that requires strong action and we should treat this part of the battle as one that takes our most vigorous efforts.

    • clay

His therapists can’t produce the requested results– he’s doing nothing but delaying access to those “back alley” reparative and aversion torturers.

    • Friday

There’s no sense legitimizing it in any way is the thing, there’s always going to be those who want to send their kids to torture camps if that’s what they think it takes, but if they know it won’t give them a straight kid, just a tortured gay one, more of them might save their money and the screaming entailed.

  • billbear1961

You don’t want to be attracted to someone, and you need to be TORTURED into changing your mind?

Is the person interested in YOU? No? Problem solved.

They ARE interested in you? AVOID THEM.

Can’t avoid them? Tell them you really are disgusted by being attracted to them–THAT will likely cool their ardour.

As for forcing ANYONE into some kind of aversion “therapy” against their will, it is incredible to me that this would not be 100% ILLEGAL in a FREE society.

One’s intimate thoughts are PRIVATE. There is nothing more profoundly private, and no one ELSE has any kind of right to know them or to interfere with them; no, not even parents, when we are kids! Such interference is a fundamental VIOLATION of the individual’s personhood. And that is true at ANY age!

What a hateful, twisted enemy of LIBERTY the U.S. is, and how much WORSE that’s going to get under PREDATOR Trump and the humanity-HATING GOP.

Resistance to this kind of unmitigated EVIL is an ABSOLUTE moral DUTY.

    • In my experience, sexual orientation runs across a spectrum. There are predominantly heterosexual people, predominantly homosexual people and those in between. There are also those whose sexual orientation develops “naturally” and those whose orientations warp in one direction or another due to some childhood trauma.

I would not be surprised if some self-identifying lesbians have just come to think they are lesbians simply because they’ve had some abusive experience with a male in their formative years. It seems this is more frequent with women than men.

Being gay, I don’t think a same-sex attraction is, in itself, morally problematic. I’m just wary of being so politically correct that we can’t admit that sometimes, people become sexually dysfunctional due to something that can be dealt with in some sort of therapeutic fashion.

Truly gay individuals shouldn’t be forced or even encouraged to go into such therapy, regardless of age, but sexually is complex and it should be up to the individual adult and their therapist to decide what route is going to make them feel completely whole, particularly if they feel that their sexuality is running counter to their own personal sense of values.

Bullshit with the right wing ‘Trauma made you this way’ nonsense. No, sexual assault doesn’t make you any straighter or gayer: that’s the premise of ‘corrective rape’ and of stigmatizing LGBT people as ‘assault victims’ and ‘stained’ or whatever.

Sexual assault by men may make you avoid *men,* but it does not change or ‘confuse’ you about your orientation, nor does it make ‘reparative therapy’ somehow non-abusive or helpful in any way. The premise is ridiculous, for starters: if you have trauma from an assault then even the Christianists should think treating the trauma, not the gayness, was the thing to do there.

The fact is that some women declare themselves lesbians over being pissed off/averse to men because of assault and ill-treatment, but it just wouldn’t *work* if they weren’t at least bi in the first place: the results are kind of like when someone goes Vegan for political reasons but it’s just the wrong freaking diet for them.

          What a superb post, Friday!

Orientation exists on a sliding scale (the species has been described as inherently bisexual), and that part of it which is not inborn is most probably decided before we can speak.

People or kids who have been traumatized present a totally separate issue that must be addressed for the sake of their mental health.

But, in this day and age, I can think of only one major reason that an individual would be so upset about the GENDER of the person they’re attracted to that they would seek aversion therapy to change their orientation, and that is that they have been taught that the attraction is wrong, disordered, wicked, SINFUL.

Someone once said that the modern USA can best be described as a reincarnation of Ancient Rome, but one bedevilled by all the neuroses and complexes of Freud’s fin-de-siècle Vienna.

My GOD, was that someone RIGHT!

It’s time we moved PAST that nightmare of Victorian hothouse emotions that the profoundly twisted and evil American right is absolutely determined to drag us back to!!

And I say that as an uptight, starchy, lapsed Methodist who, while he has no trouble expressing his opinions or emotions, is no stranger to a frosty PHYSICAL reserve that would make Queen Victoria look like a wild woman in comparison.

OT: With all the deserved attention being paid to the political situation elsewhere, Canadians are paying little attention to the races to replace two of our party leaders. Even the entry of Shark Tank “shark” Kevin O’Leary hasn’t attracted eyeballs.

So finally there’s something about where they stand on LQBTQI issues.

    https://news.vice.com/story/where-the-conservative-leadership-candidates-stand-on-gay-pride

The dividing issues are whether or not they would march in a Pride parade and their support/non-support for recently-passed legislation for Trans rights.

There’s an additional issue involved with Pride in that Toronto Pride has banned police participation in response to pressure from Black Lives Matter. This in turn leads to jeopardizing government funding for Pride.

Increasingly in Canada, Pride, as the largest and most diverse event/celebration, is used as a proxy for other issues, both the middle east and now Black Lives Matter. As it’s organized primarily by people on the left, but is funded almost entirely by corporate and government funding, it’s subject to pressure from all corners.

As a former Canadian resident alien who has spent a lot of time on Canada’s immigration website recently, it’s clear to me that the government wants to increase the number of people in Canada, preferably by increasing the birthrate from 1.6 children per woman (replacement value is considered 2.1 cpw by statisticians). The less popular but more realistic option is increasing immigration of the ‘right kind of people’.

The argument being that the [1]social safety net and [2]economy depend on having more young people whose taxable earnings will serve both interests. Those goals are shared with Canadian liberals (lower case ‘L’).

Canadian conservatives (lower case ‘C’) seem to favor policies that encourage more babies and fewer immigrants. They seem to think that [3]gays are somehow bringing down the birth rate, [4]more religion will encourage more fucking (amongst the right kind of people), and that [5]destroying unique ecosystems is ‘progress’ if it puts money in the pockets of landed interests. Those are the biggest visible differences with the Canadian Left to me as an outsider with Canadian ‘experience’.

A major part of Harper’s legacy seems to be the delusion that limiting gay rights will somehow advance other causes that suit Canada’s long-term interests.

Anyway, to contrast this with American priorities is both interesting and striking to me. The article you linked seems to confirm that Canada has a number of people who think exactly like Americans, but who are much more subtle and dissembling in advancing the same ideology as Trump does.

Conversion therapy is a mix of fraudulent and harmful psychological treatments done by anti-gay psychotherapist that include everything from psych med drugs to electric shock treatment. Some of these fraudulent and harmful psychological treatments have resulted in the deaths of LGBT people. Also mostly anti-gay Christians are involved in these treatments that cause the death of children and adults because they do not work to changing a person’s sexual orientation. Religion and psychotherapy have failed to work in these cases and sometimes people working in Religion and psychotherapy want LGBT people to die rather then go on being LGBT.
