Huckabee Begs Trump Not To Gut The Arts

In an op-ed for the Washington Post, Mike Huckabee manages to simultaneously defend the arts and heap insults on artists. He writes:

Donald Trump wasn’t my first choice for president. I was. But he was my second choice, and I’m proud that I supported him. In tackling the federal budget, he faces a debt that has doubled to $20 trillion in the past eight years. No doubt a chainsaw seems more appropriate to the task at hand than a carving knife, but I would urge my president and friend to hold back from one tiny area of the budget whose elimination would cost far more than it would save.

Funding for the National Endowment for the Arts might seem expendable — especially given how often celebrity artists insult and even threaten the president. But such hateful high-dollar Hollywood and music-industry stars don’t receive anything from the NEA, and they shouldn’t. Not because of their insufferable political whining, but because they get rich selling their talents to the highest bidder in the private sector. I have zero interest in spending a dime of tax money to prop up those who hate the president and the tens of millions who elected him.

I do care greatly about the real recipients of endowment funds: the kids in poverty for whom NEA programs may be their only chance to learn to play an instrument, test-drive their God-given creativity and develop a passion for those things that civilize and humanize us all. They’re the reason we should stop and recognize that this line item accounting for just 0.004 percent of the federal budget is not what’s breaking the bank.

Stopped clock, blind squirrel, whatever analogy you want – I don’t know how much credit we should actually give him for the rare occasion when he says something that makes sense.

I never thought I would agree with this scum but this was my life..
“I do care greatly about the real recipients of endowment funds: the kids in poverty for whom NEA programs may be their only chance to learn to play an instrument, test-drive their God-given creativity and develop a passion for those things that civilize and humanize us all. They’re the reason we should stop and recognize that this line item accounting for just 0.004 percent of the federal budget is not what’s breaking the bank.”
Individual do not receive NEA funds any more but the most at risk kids do and they need it more than anyone. The money dried up when the recession started and has not fully recovered since. Without the NEA, grants come and go on the whim of the people offering them. Frankly, most of them don’t want to sink their money into a program for kids who will “wind up jail anyway”. They see it as a waste. Even when I was able to create a program with 19 classes a week covering 3 counties, I was repeatedly told by administrators on down that it was a waste of my time and talent to teach all these rotten kids about art. Most of them being wealthy republicans, I just let it go and kept doing the best I could until the money dried up.

    • M Jackson

Thanks for being on the front lines for those kids. That is totally
what the NEA and NEH are about.
Put an instrument or a microphone or a paintbrush in any kid’s hand and you can change their world.

    • It’s not Trump — the NEA, the NEH, PBS have all been targets for the right ever since they were created — the idea of government funding for something that’s not pushing their agenda is completely unacceptable.

  • This became a right-wing issue in the 90s over four controversial grants. The process has been changed significantly since then. This is just holdover from low-information voters and idiot Teabagger Congressmen. The NEA isn’t just modern art, opera and ballet. They fund a wide variety of visual and performing arts. Even a small NEA grant is respected because of a good peer review process which translates into many more grants from individuals and foundations who trust the opinions of respected musicians, choreographers, etc. about the value of the work of up-and-coming artists and companies. The loss of the NEA will be devastating and those hurt the most will be people who don’t live in a dense urban center with well-funded arts groups.

Gee, I wonder how the national debt could have doubled? A couple of wars on the national credit card maybe, while cutting taxes on the wealthiest people in the country? That couldn’t possibly have any effect on the debt. Hell, let’s try it again! Maybe it will work on the 4th time around.

I think he probably likes classical music. The kind that accompanies cartoons.

  • CottonBlimp

Isn’t it amazing that Republicans have the fucking gall to pretend they care about fiscal responsibility while their president wastes hundreds of millions of dollars on vacations?

    • Gianni

You mustn’t have gotten the explanation from Sean Sphincter in one of the press briefings. Trump is not actually on vacation just because he plays some golf. Unlike Obama’s golfing, Trump is actually there to work each weekend at his now famous Winter/Summer White House. So in between rounds of golf, he is actually working on official business. I don’t know about anyone else, but I don’t buy it. I don’t know how Sean tells that shit with a straight face.

  • An interesting bit of trivia: Huckabee and NEA Chair Jane Chu attended college together. He was a few years older and had a different major so it’s unlikely that they had classes together, but it’s not that big a school.
