Catholic League Endorses Trump’s Gutting Of The Arts Because “Perverts” Shouldn’t Get Federal Money

Via press release from Catholic League president Bill Donohue:

The National Endowment for the Arts (NEA), National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH), National Public Radio (NPR), and the Public Broadcasting Service (PBS), are all subsidized by the Corporation for Public Broadcasting (CPB). The Trump administration is right to propose a budget that completely guts these entities of federal funding. That is why I am asking members of the House and Senate Appropriations Committees to honor the president’s request.

Justice demands that these agencies should be eliminated: Taxpayers should not be forced to pay for assaults on their religion. Christians constitute roughly 75 percent of the population; Catholics are approximately 25 percent of the total. In the name of “art,” these Americans are expected to pay for irreverent exhibits, but depictions that are reverential—such as a nativity scene outside City Hall—are denied a dime. It’s time we stopped giving the arts a privileged position and cut their funding. The same is true for publicly funded radio and TV programming that has a history of insulting the majority of Americans.

The CPB was founded in the 1960s, and it has been plagued with problems ever since. In the late 1980s, the NEA funded Andre Serrano’s “Piss Christ” and Robert Mapplethorpe’s “The Perfect Moment.” Serrano took a crucifix and dropped it into a jar of his own urine, branding it art. The NEA gave a Philadelphia museum $30,000 to display graphic homosexual S&M photos taken by Mapplethorpe.

In 1998, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled that there is no constitutional prohibition against Congress setting decency standards for the NEA. But attempts by the NEA to enforce grant recipients to sign an anti-obscenity pledge went nowhere. This is why Congress must act.

To show how perverse things have become, President Barack Obama not only approved generous grants to the NEA, he actually included $50 million for the arts as part of his “federal stimulus package.” One of the first beneficiaries was a San Francisco outfit, CounterPULSE. It received $25,000 to pay for employees’ salaries. What did the public get from it? The group hosted “a long-running pansexual performance series” called “Perverts Put Out”; it asked the audience to “Join your fellow pervs for some explicit twisted fun.”

The press release goes on at some length to recount the many times Donohue personally protested outside of plays and art exhibits that offended his tender feewings.

You want perverted and immoral, Bill?

$598 billion of taxpayers’ money funding our armed forces (more than the next seven countries combined!). You shouldn’t need a commandment to know that killing people is almost always wrong.

And the surplus military equipment given to increasingly militarized police forces, and grants like $34 billion from DHS for police agencies to buy things like tanks and drones, which end up being used in misguided raids that kill innocent members of racial minorities… Black lives matter!

Celibacy, a denial of the natural urge to procreate, is a gross perversion. Bottle it up and it will find the easiest, nearest outlet, like water traveling the path of least resistance. Unfortunately children are usually first in line. So besides denying a natural expression, they then criminalize themselves and damage scores of innocents. Yeah….great fucking institution.

The Public Broadcasting Service here in the states has been on the Republicans’ chopping block for years. PBS is the only TV outlet in the U.S. that produces in-depth exposés on government corruption — much of it over the years involving the very corrupt and very criminal Republican Party. I’m thinking of the excellent “Frontline” series, for instance.

PBS also produces a lot of science programming (the “Nova” series, a notable one), and we all know how science and scientific reality is a threat to the Republican Party and its business funders.

    • clay

PBS and CPB aren’t the same thing. CPB is on the chopping block, but that doesn’t go for programming (that’s PBS). CPB actually goes for the operating costs, so it’s mostly the smaller (more rural) broadcast areas that will get only “religious” public-service broadcasting.

      • another_steve

How is gutting federal funding of CPB not a gutting of federal funding of PBS?

        • clay

CPB pays electrical bills at radio stations.

Great news from Atlanta local elections yesterday! DSA (Democratic Socialists of America) member Khalid Kamau advanced to runoff in his election for city council yesterday, with an incredilbly strong showing (43% of the vote in a multi-way election). DSA members from all over the country made calls for Khalid, so hell yeah on this victory.

    https://twitter.com/MetroATLDSA/status/844547624350990336

This is indicative of the reality of our new political climate, in which a Senator calling himself a democratic socialist is (by far) the most popular politician in America. After Khalid’s runoff next up for Metro Atlanta DSA is supporting GA State Senator Vincent Fort for mayor of Atlanta. Senator Fort is an extremely progressive candidate and at a local talk he gave to Metro Atlanta DSA he promised that if elected mayor Atlanta would not cooperate with ICE in their deportation efforts in any way. ✊

Since Catholic League president Bill Donohue, is against public funding of the arts and humanities and wants to quote statistics, here are a few to consider:
    1) Over the past couple of decades, more than 4,000 Catholic priests molested over 30, 000 boys and girls
    2) The Catholic Church for decades hid these crimes from the secular government authorities
    3) For every 5 kids raised in a Catholic family, 4 will not call themselves Catholic by the time they become adults.
The ancient Catholic Church is a dying cult of superstition and has been replaced in our modern society by kindness, science, reason, logic, arts, and humanities.

  • Uncle Mark

While the Catholic League is celebrating the gutting of federal funding of the arts, my question is why isn’t the Catholic League making more noise over the gutting of Meals on Wheels, as well as other programs that assist the impoverished…or has the Catholic League abandoned those people that their Lord commanded them to help?

    • Talisman

So long as they tithe regularly, who cares if they starve?

      • Uncle Mark

Except Catholics don’t tithe. (I was raised Catholic. It was self-righteous, self-centered, hypocrites, like Donohue that caused me to flee. The POS doesn’t even support the current Pope as he is supposed to. He’s supposed to follow him as “Christ’s representative on earth,” except Donohue can’t abide by the Pope’s softening stance on abortion, homosexuality, and focus upon forgiveness versus the focus on law & doctrine. I guess that means the Catholic League, itself, really isn’t Catholic.)

    • Clive Johnson

It’s the moral inversion of right-wing Catholics like Donohue: Generate moral panic about nothing, yet ignore what actually matters.

Terence McNally wrote “Corpus Christi,” a play about gay Jesus. The play generally is good and deserves to be staged. One of those “think about it” plays. I wish theaters would revive it from time to time.
A few years ago, a documentary came out about a touring company staging the play in Corpus Christi. One of the sections featured the fearless crusader, Miss Donna Who, leading a picket outside the New York theater where it premiered. No, none of the protesters had seen it. They knew it was blasphemy without even seeing it. Exactly. Just the IDEA. The outside possibility that it might make him THINK. Fortunately, if I remember correctly, it was raining the night of the protest.

In a discussion of music and science between Neil deGrasse Tyson, Herbie Hancock and Wayne Shorter in the March issue of National Geographic, Herbie Hancock said this: “The scientific community created this technological age – but where did that impetus come from? If you ask many people – like Larry Page, one of the co-founders of Google – they say music was a big influence. I’ve privately asked many scientists if they’ve had a connection with music or other arts, and the answer was yes from maybe 85 percent of them. So, if these people who have this attachment to the arts created this technological age that we’re living in, then in order for it to thrive we need the arts the same way they needed the arts.”

Freedom of religion says: Your church doesn’t get a veto on government programs or funding.

And it should be obvious that when our government funds the arts it can’t be limited to projects so bland that they don’t challenge anybody’s preconceived opinion. The whole point is to expand the discussion to more people and points of view.

  • Not only do the extreme right wing dings not have a sense of humor, they can’t understand the role of art in society. It isn’t supposed to be hotel art, but reflects society’s backwaters and the rarely unexplored by the masses.

A prime example of this is Yayoi Kusama’s You Who Are Getting Obliterated in the Dancing Swarm of Fireflies (2005). It is a very unsettling art installation. The walls, floor and ceiling is of black shiny marble. So when you stand in the dark watching the lights glow, dim, and brighten, you realize that you’ve lost your bearings, as the lights are reflected and it can cause vertigo. http://www.phxart.org/fireflies If you ever get to Phoenix it shouldn’t be missed.

Admitted drunken Bill attacks the victims and survivors. He once even said to my face in a courtroom when he tried to have me prosecuted for hate crimes against him, for standing up to his attacks against us: “If a 15 to 17 year old is being messed with by a priest and he does not smack him, that means he wanted it, he enjoyed it and he is a homosexual because of it.” Bill also loves to call victims who were over the age of 12 not victims of pedophiles. That they are liars, gold diggers, out looking for a payday. That they were not raped by pedophiles. Then he goes on to discount the terms used to further describe pedophiles, ephebophiles and hebeophiles.

Bill is one perverted, disgusting, scum for his Roman Catholic Church and a huge defender of it’s Pedophile Pimps and Pedophiles, therefore, he is a pervert and should NOT be receiving any federal money for his Catholic League.

Then we go onto the Roman Catholic Church itself. Priests, brothers, nuns and sisters are still raping children, beating children, terrorizing children. The Pope, Cardinals, Bishops and Archbishops and the Vatican are still protecting these pedophiles and moving them. So they should not receive any federal money either.

  • “We don’t have that problem—being a boozer is a condition of employment.” said Bill Donohue about the Catholic League. Helen Sorrentino of The Alternative Press advises employers to limit office parties to “a few hours.” I manifestly disagree—ours is open-ended and could go on all night. She says to “end the service of alcohol 30 minutes prior to the end the party.” No way—this is not a baseball game where you can’t get a beer after the seventh inning. Indeed, most of us grab a roadie before leaving.
