SUCK IT, HATERS: Disney’s Beauty And The Beast Smashes Box Office Records Despite Right Wing Boycott

CNN reports:

“Beauty and the Beast,” Disney’s live action remake of its beloved 1991 animated film, made an estimated $350 million worldwide this weekend. Of that total, $170 million came at theaters in North America. The domestic total exceeded what people in the industry had expected, and it broke the record for the biggest box office opening in March. The record had been held by last year’s opening of “Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice.” It’s also the best opening weekend of 2017 so far.

More from Box Office Mojo:

It’s also the seventh largest opening weekend ever, ahead of the $169.1 million opening for Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 2 and just behind Iron Man 3‘s $174.1 million opening from May of 2013.

It’s also the largest opening for a PG-rated film, topping Finding Dory‘s previous record of $135 million, as well as the largest Spring opening weekend, fourth largest Saturday gross of all-time, sixth largest Sunday gross and eighth largest theater average for a wide opening release.

The film also set records in IMAX, delivering the #1 global and domestic openings for a PG-rated film in the IMAX format. Beauty and the Beast‘s estimated $21 million on 1,026 IMAX screens in 56 markets worldwide pushed the company past the $6 billion mark in total global box office since the inception of the DMR process with Apollo 13: The IMAX Experience in 2002.

With One Million Moms it’s always important to remind yourself that the name is designed to mislead you to think they are a grassroots effort representing this groundswell of mothers. That’s couldn’t be further from the truth.

    • Chris Baker

As far as the boycott, I grew up in fundamentalist baptist circles and one of my FB friends from high school is an extremely conservative [prude].(she boycotted watching the Emmys and Oscars (whatever that means, unless you are a Nielson home). She posted on her FB page that she went to see it and thought it was ” OUT-OF-THIS-WORLD-AMAZING!”, and the “controversial” part was minimal.

So once the word gets out from people who have actually seen the movie, whatever tiny boycott there is will quickly fall apart.

    • prixator

But, without a boycott it might have grossed almost $171 million in North America!

  • Mark

Do haters have a gag reflex?…

    You go, gurl…

  • romanhans

Wow. An inescapable scenario forms in my head:

ONE MILLION MOMS: Kids, don’t go see that filthy pro-gay Disney movie.

FOUR MILLION KIDS: Oh go suck it, Mom.

    • Cucker “Dick” Tarlson

Right. Try keeping little girls away from Disney Princesses and they WILL CUT YOU.

    • lymis

I can’t help but picture an additional dynamic.

“Aw, who wants to go see a stupid Disney movie about a bunch of talking furniture. Besides, I already know the story, so there’s nothing cool about seeing it.”

“I absolutely forbid you to see that depraved piece of trash!”

“Wow. Must be worth seeing after all!”

    • I’m sorry, but, in order for those one million moms to have kids, they would have needed to have *gasp* SEX! So that’s not likely. Unless all those kids are adopted.

      • JeffreyMGr

they NEVER say that. It’s always “s*x” because of self-installed internet filters.

    • ColdCountry

One wonders what they think of Peter Pan.

      • romanhans

MOM #1: What do you think of that Peter Pan guy who’s always flying into our kids’ bedrooms?

MOM #2: I like him. He reminds me of Michael Jackson.

        • ColdCountry

I was watching the early version with Mary Martin at a friend’s house and commented that I thought the story was weird: a boy who hangs out with younger boys, who only wants a girl to be his mother, and (in the movie) you had a woman playing a boy playing a woman in order to entice a man into the forest. My friend looked at me for a moment, then said, “thanks for ruining one of my favorite childhood movies.”

      • fuow

They obviously haven’t read the book, either.

    • Chris Baker

Right. How do you explain to your angry 9-year-old: “You can go to see a movie you have already seen in animated form because there’s a subtle gay subtext in one of the scenes” ?

I’m sure they’ve “learned” that Jesus is LORD, so there ya go.

      • stuckinthewoods

From what I read the “gay moment” is when LeFou dances briefly with another male character. That’s it. So “Zorba the Greek” was a gay movie, whoonoo?

        • KCMC

and even that moment was presented as inadvertent.

        • another_steve

Culturally queer Jews such as myself — not into the religious aspects, but into the cultural aspects — smile when we witness a Hasidic wedding celebration. Hasids are among the most fundamentalist of Jews.

Because women are regarded as inferior in their male eyes and mainly as a distraction and temptation (read: the Adam and Eve story), Hasidic men dance with each other at their celebrations — not with “their women.”

These men — among the most homophobic on Planet Earth — dancing with each other… a surreal sight.

        • ColdCountry

They must LOVE Paint Your Wagon.

      • jrex

There were 3 moments I noticed in the film. 1) in the big song praising Gaston, LaFou wraps Gaston’s arms around him, they both subtly respond and LaFou says “too awkward?” To which Gaston agrees. 2) During the climactic storming of the castle the three thugs pictured at top of page are magically dressed in women’s fancy dresses and wigs. The guy pictured at left above clearly liked it. 3) The guy who liked the dress ends up dancing with LaFou in the the final ballroom party.

OT. Many are saying it may just be “noise” but today’s Gallup Trump approval rating has taken a dramatic drop. 37 approve, 58 don’t.

    • Skeptical_Inquirer

What’s shameful is that 37 approve.

      • Blake Jordan

Sadly, I do not think he will drop below 30… unless he starts killing off those who support him…

    • vorpal

      “waste their lives gaming”

As a 39 year old liberal gaymer, this phrase does not compute.

That scene — that entire movie, actually — is Cinematic Camp Epitomized.

The only other movie that in my opinion rivals it is “The Boys in the Band.”

          • Librarykid

But TBITB had a dark undercurrent of self-hatred that is not in Producers.

          • another_steve

Very true. To appreciate Boys in the Band, you have to view/regard it as a period piece. Much in the same way that one can today appreciate 1915’s “Birth of a Nation.”

“What I am, Michael, is a 32-year-old ugly pot-marked Jew fairy.”

But you know, Craig, I adhere to the old adage: In every stereotype there’s a kernel of truth.

          • tomfromthenews

Steve, you need to finish that amazing line (paraphrasing): “And if it takes me a while to pull myself together and if I smoke a little grass before I can get up the nerve to show my face to the world, it’s nobody’s goddam business but my own.”

          • another_steve

            Lol. Yes. 😉

One of the great High Camp cinematic moments of all time.

    • Todd20036

That’s easy. At the end of the performance, have a kiss-in

    • DaddyRay

Do you have any info on your symphony

      • Mikey

        no, never heard of it.

        of course I do! LOL
it’s being premiered in Seattle in May.

    • Jeffrey

You just need someone to email Monica Cole and tell her that you are planning a production where your symphony, which is entitled Gay Cocksuckers Who Hate Jesus, will be performed entirely in the nude. That should get the ball rolling. Don’t forget to include performance times and dates.

      • another_steve

“Gay Cocksuckers Who Hate Jesus” has already been done. Ran for five performances and then the theater burned down. Some claim it was an electrical malfunction, some claim it was otherwise. We’ll never know.

I suggest it be titled “Heterosexual Men Who Like Lesbian Sex.” Will sell out for the first 100 performances five hours after tickets go on sale.

One Million Moms will have just begun to photocopy their boycott leaflets when that occurs.

        • Anastasia Beaverhousen

          Photocopy? You mean mimeograph!

I’m fond of the smell of tar and freshly-poured asphalt.

When I’m driving on a stretch of road that’s being repaved, I always open the car window so I can smell it.

          • Jeffrey

There’s Monica Cole getting high on that mimeograph ink.

I mean the largest reaction to LeFou being gay was ‘he wasn’t already?’ For the majority of people it was obvious he was totally gay for Gaston (and insert Gaston meme here) but I really like how they changes up his personality and his interaction with Mrs. Potts was adorable

These nationwide boycotts, called for by extremists right wing organizations, are never very effective in hurting the objects of their boycotts, because the great majority of Americans are fairly moderate and centrist in their approaches to most things. The boycotts do get publicity and whip up their base to send in money to support these extremist organizations and that may indeed be their main purpose.

    • Fritz Keppler

And they influence others to go and see what all the fuss is about.

  • Dirk Prophet

I’m boycotting because I fucking hate musicals!

But, Disney has had a long history of accepting LGBT folks as an employer and access to the theme parks. These Christianists haven’t hurt Disney yet.

I still hate Disney almost as much as I hate musicals but… for other reasons.

    • Mikey

you realize we’re going to have to take your gay union card away for this. you will no longer be able to call yourself a practising homosexual. you will have to find work as a homosexual on the fringes of gay society, with the bikers and lumberjacks, and big, beefy, muscular, manly-men.. umm… hmmm… I hate musicals too! (I lie like a rug, as well)

  • What the religious right doesn’t get is that their true believers are not that big a part of the population and that there are far more people who resent those bigoted hypocrites than there are people who follow and admire them. So yeah, their call for a boycott just encouraged people who were thinking of seeing this anyway to go ahead and go opening weekend. Plus, free publicity for a beloved musical good for the whole family? Ka–CHING!!!

    https://twitter.com/mattmfm/status/843187579130449920

    • What’s kind of interesting now is there are some Trump supporters who are beginning to realize they were conned, that Donald always promises everything in the biggest (and vague) terms possible, then betrays that by doing the exact opposite at the earliest opportunity.

      • MikeBx2

They should be in the streets protesting.

        • They should remember exactly who and which party betrayed them the next time there’s a chance to vote.

That’s true. Let’s hope the harm done isn’t irreversible by that point.

Tony Bennett has had an unequaled musical career. He had his first #1 hit “Because of You” in 1951 and is still doing concerts and selling CDs at the age of 90. He has had a successful singing career for over 66 years. Awesome.

      • another_steve

Totally agree. An amazing career, still in progress.

NBC, at the end of last year, did a two-hour 90th birthday tribute to Bennett, filmed in Radio City Music Hall in NYC. I’m usually not a fan of those kinds of things but this one was done exceptionally well imo.

      Lovely. 😉

I’ve never intellectually understood why human childbirth is so difficult and so painful for some females. From an evolutionary biological perspective it should be very easy, you’d think.

Sounds harsh — very harsh — but I suspect it’s a kind of natural population control.

      • BobSF_94117

I think we just eat better than Nature has been accustomed to.

        • another_steve

I believe our scientific efforts to prolong life run counter to human evolutionary biology. I believe we are naturally, genetically, programmed to live just past our child-rearing period, and then to leave the scene.

No horrible effects of “advanced age” that way.

          No Alzheimer’s. No age-related cancers.

The way it was when we all lived in caves.

          • Natty Enquirer

I believe our scientific efforts are part of our evolution. There is nothing outside nature.

          • another_steve

            Hear ya.

But then it could be argued that our knowledge of weapons of mass destruction is part and parcel of our biological destiny. “Ordained for us,” if you will. Perhaps our species is programmed — intended — to obliterate itself in the fullness of time.

            Clear the decks.

            Start anew.

          • BobSF_94117

The way it was is that a lot of people died young and a few lived to their 60s and 70s and got to tell the young whippersnappers what to do. Get off my lawn, for example.

          • another_steve

The way it was back then, Bob, is that the few surviving old ones said to their 25-year-old sons:

“Get out of the house and do something useful! Join the freakin’ Crusades, damn it!”

      • Mostly it’s because our brains grew too large.

        • another_steve

          Synthetic vitamins.

          The bane of evolutionary biology.

      • locomotion and brain size are a difficult thing to balance in one area of the body, much like it’s complicated to make certain organs responsible for elimination and reproduction. there are trade offs in both directions. bigger skulls = better skills, and human birth doesn’t kill the mother, it just hurts, a lot. we’ll probably evolve out of that as women who experience less pain are more likely to have more children, but it’s basically a holdover from the time when we were learning to walk upright but needed to think really hard, more than other animals with whom we competed for food, etc.

      • The reason why humans are entirely helpless at birth, to the point of not being able to hold their heads up, is due to them being born several months early so they will fit thru the birth canal. Those big brains of ours caused issues. And the problem is only going to get worse. Women who used to die in childbirth due to having a very narrow pelvis are now living due to cesarean births, and are passing on those narrow pelvis genes to their daughters.

        • another_steve

Interesting, biki. Makes sense. I can’t help but think, though, that there’s some kind of natural “population suppressor” at work there.

Perhaps the reason labor pains are so dreadful for so many women (imagine what it was like before modern pain-killers) is that it’s nature’s way of sending a message to women who’ve already been through it:

“You liked that, huh? You want to go through that again, dearie? I think NOT!!!”

There was a moment when Emma tells the beast she loves him and kisses him on the lips when he’s still the beast . . . that moment felt a bit icky. The “gay moments” are just light stereotyping that could be easily missed, but added good humor if you noticed. Although there is a moment at the end where you see Le Fou dancing with a man, that in any case could be interpreted by some as nothing more than cartoonish silliness rather than a “gay moment”. What was awesome and unexpected, was that at the end when they were rolling credits and large photos of each character, Le Fou got a lot of cheers, while no one else did. I was like: “What? The general public is aware of this whole brouhaha with Le Fou and is supporting him? Go San Diego!”

This issue is more complicated than “let’s give guns to the mentally ill.” That’s why the ACLU got involved. it’s worth reading more about it.

O/T: I don’t know if anyone else is watching The Good Fight. I was a huge fan of The Good Wife and I’ve got to agree with one reviewer that The Good Fight might surpass the former show in quality. Anyhoo, they had a great story line tonight about online censorship and it involved a thinly veiled clone of that British/Greek piece of garbage (I won’t write his name). At one point during an appeal hearing at the firm, he calls in a male prostitute and tries to get a blowjob while singing the Battle Hymn of the Republic. Of course he’s taken down hard by the end of the episode but it was a very fascinating take on trolls, the alt-right, and online hatred.

The murder was evil enough by itself. For society to not seek justice for the victim, well that’s a whole other level of evil. And don’t ANYBODY tell me that they’d do the same if it had been a white victim, both the murderers and the State Attorney.

          http://www.miamiherald.com/news/special-reports/florida-prisons/article49087705.html
Miami Herald did a whole series on them.
Beware, it’s not for the faint of heart.
I do understand that many of these inmates are dangerous and measures have to be taken but in so many of these cases, the prison workers are no better or are worse as the inmates they are guarding.

          • JCF

This is the correct link for the Rainey case: http://www.miamiherald.com/news/local/community/miami-dade/article139206653.html

Absolutely appalling. The excuse that his death was because “people with schizophrenia have an impaired ability to compensate for “heat stress”” (at 160F+??? ANYONE would have “heat stress”!) as was the claim “his skin slippage to as an event that happened post-mortem consistent with “exposure to a warm, moist environment” and the effects of changes
during the early stages of body decomposition.” and not, you know, because the man was BOILED to death!

RIP, Darren Rainey. I hope, at least, your family collects BIG bucks in their Wrongful Death suit.

Re what happened to these uniformed murders:

“Following the Herald’s stories, Dade Correctional’s warden and
assistant warden were forced out, and, later, then-Secretary Michael
Crews stepped down amid political pressure. He was replaced by Jones.
Other high-level prison officials have also left, including the prison
agency’s inspector general, Jeffery Beasley — the system’s “watchdog” —
who was accused by his own investigators of thwarting investigations.

            Two
of the guards identified as locking Rainey in the shower left their
prison jobs, but were allowed to keep their law enforcement
certifications. Roland Clarke is now a police officer in Miami Gardens
and Cornelius Thompson works as a federal corrections officer.”

            Justice denied. Kyrie eleison…

      • Ninja0980

It would have been the same in this case because it would have involved a prison inmate.
And for many folks in society, they deserve what they get.

    • The_Wretched

WTF, it’s shit like this that has me convinced we need to throw out the entire criminal ‘justice’ system and start over.

I have to admit that it is very good. As much as I dislike Sarandon after all that crap she’s great and Jessica Lange is outstanding. It’s great looking, smart, with just that touch of camp. And the supporting cast is amazing. Judy Davis is great as Hedda Hopper. Definitely watchable and an interesting look into both Hollywood and the treatment of women.

    • Rambie

Yes! I was also on the fence since Sarandon is a headliner but it’s been good.

O/T: I haven’t been paying attention to the Old Spice commercials, but i did miss where they had a new guy, Steven Ogg in their commercials. Forgot how attractive he looked like, in a mature rugged kind of way until i realized that i remembered him from GTA 5, as the psychopath Trevor. And no i do not watch the walking dead as much anymore as i am way behind, which people would probably point out that he is on there.

I knew him as trevor before he was on TWD.

    • coram nobis

I always wondered if “The Captain and the Bos’n” retired together.

    • Bryan

Oh GOD he’s on an OLD SPICE commercial now too? I was excited to hear Trevor come to the walking dead because he’d bring some charisma.

……I wasn’t wrong? I wanna punch his teeth in but I wasn’t wrong….But yeah, I heard of him as Trevor first too… I guess Old Spice ‘fits’, since as Trevor he’s rumored to have stripped down to his boxers in the VR booth to get into character while recording lines.

      • Blake J Butler

Trevor in the game had his moments, the epitome of a grand theft auto protagonist, combined with psychopathic tendencies, down low biseuxality, he’s overall in a league of his own, a modern favorite of players of the video game franchise.

      • Blake J Butler

Trevor in the game had his moments, the epitome of a grand theft auto protagonist, combined with psychopathic tendencies, down low bisexuality, he’s overall in a league of his own, a modern favorite of players of the video game franchise.

Trevor sometimes in his nature is found to be in his undies, white briefs, although it usually involved a liquor bottle in one hand, an assault rifle in another hand, and a trail of dead bikers. That does picture a good visual minus the dead bikers.

        • Bryan

You forgot the face full of meth. Although I suppose the liquor bottle suffices, Trevor probably doubles up. The question you must ask yourself is….how many times has he tried to pull that shit in a Hydra with a missing ejection panel while Danger Zone starts playing on the radio. I guarantee it’s a nonzero number of times.

Edit: Also non-zero – the number of times he’s done it holding up BOTH the liquor bottle AND the assault rifle while also shouting “TREVOR PHILLIPS INDUSTRIES MOTHERFUCKER!!!”

          • Blake J Butler

I take it you are a player of the franchise to know of his habits, the name of the model jet fighter, as well as the Kenny Loggins track that is a part of the soundtrack, specifically the newer console versions? 🙂

          • Bryan

I got it when it came out for the 360 and although I hate myself, got it when it went of sale for the XB1 so I could keep playing after I upgraded. I was looking forward to his appearance in TWD to see just how Trevor-y he acted. I consider it DLC. Considering the shoutouts already there I’d have a really hard time believing that this precise scenario didn’t ever occur.

I’m a total sucker for wide open sandbox games just for the world building aspect of it.

          • Blake J Butler

I was implying that only someone that has played gta 5 would have known those things, i’m lame and watched tutorials on youtube to see how the newer consoles were like, i still have yet to get a copy for my PS4.

I do like sandbox games, I paddle back and forth between the serious storylines and gameplay of Grand theft auto and the over-the top gameplay and environment of the Saint Row franchise. Throw in the dead rising franchise along with dead island and you have me there. still finding games that i like that have been out for awhile.
Although nostaligia gets back to me and i take a trip down memory lane with classic grand theft auto, pre- gta 4.

I’ve already de-friended one of my oldest real-life friends. He repeatedly slams “entitlement” programs, yet is disabled and living off the government’s teat. The reason he’s disabled? He’s severely obese, with all the associated conditions – diabetes, HBP, liver disease, sleep apnea, I guess he thinks his own entitlements will somehow be protected if the programs go away.
