At Broadway Backwards 2017: Kathleen Turner, Len Cariou, Josh Groban, Andrew Rannells [VIDEOS]

How about some fabulously gay show tunes to close out your week? Via press release:

Equality, solidarity and warmth filled the Al Hirschfeld Theatre on March 13, 2017, when the biggest stars on Broadway proved gender doesn’t matter, but love does as they explored and embraced the great songs of musical theatre at the 12th annual Broadway Backwards.

This year’s sold-out celebration, where men sing songs intended for women and vice versa without changing pronouns, shattered fundraising records, bringing in an impressive $522,870 to benefit Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS and The Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual & Transgender Community Center in New York City. The show was produced by Broadway Cares.

The evening was hosted by Tony Award winner and longtime friend of Broadway Cares, Julie White, who brought her signature sass and wit to the stage. The evening featured 19 comedic, poignant and heart-wrenching numbers, backed by a live, 12-piece onstage orchestra, on the Hirschfeld stage, home to the Tony Award-winning Kinky Boots.

I think snippets from all the performances are in the first montage clip below. We don’t yet have a solo clip for my personal highlight from the show – Tony winner John Glover’s heart wrenching tribute to AIDS survivorship as told through John Prine’s Hello In There, which was covered by Bette Midler on her 1972 debut album, The Divine Miss M. As far as I know the song wasn’t part of any Broadway show but Bette Midler has done Broadway, so maybe that’s the connection. The full set list is below.

Good cry. My husband’s away and I needed one anyway.

Imagine the song set in the West Village as an aging AIDS survivor laments his loneliness from missing his friends. I was a wreck.

  • JoeMyGod

Broadway veteran Len Cariou forgot a verse or two of “I’m Still Here” and I think the audience only loved him more for it.

    • Elsewhere1010

I think everybody forgets some of the lyrics to “I’m Still Here”. Hey, in the “Sixteen Going on Seventeen” clip Keenan-Bolger flips a couplet, and instead of an A-A B-B rhyme scheme he did A-B B-A. The A-B just about worked (almost) but the B-A was just two lines that didn’t rhyme at all.

There are two songs that I’ve performed in public that almost drove me to a breakdown; one was Rodgers and Hart’s “To Keep My Love Alive”, a list song on how to do away with your husband(s), and Cole Porter’s “Let Do It”, My partner and got all the way through the 5,574 verses twice, once in rehearsal and one more time in front of an audience. When it was over, neither one of us knew if we’d really gotten it right, but the stage manager said we did, so we took her word for it.

  • JoeMyGod

Josh Groban is currently starring in “Natasha, Pierre & the Great Comet of 1812” and really brought the house down with his gender-reversed take on “Somebody Else’s Story” from “Chess.”

Does Cynthia get paid by the note?

  • Yalma Cuder-Zicci

Thanks for posting the program. There were a lot of songs I couldn’t place. And the voice (and ass) on Jay Armstrong Johnson!

  • JoeMyGod

The (real) Little Mermaid did some faux muff-diving during “Kiss The Girl” and the audience went nuts.

  • JoeMyGod

The show opened to a darkened stage with an audio montage of some of Donald Trump’s most obscene and foul comments. And then 20 dancers burst out of the wings for “Tap Your Troubles Away.” More than appropriate.

    • Sam_Handwich

      LOL

Joe on the Prowl is always fun!

  • JoeMyGod

The one number that nobody knew was “The Sensitive Song” from “Cops: The Musical” – which has definitely NOT been on Broadway. Yet. The lyrics are a riot.

The Sixteen going on Seventeen was priceless. Just wonderful. I am a sucker for this type of stuff.

that number, my 11 yr o dream (of 2 boys) realized.

    • J Ascher

Oh, to be that age and in love! I would have liked to experience that!

    • Adam King

Who’s Andrew Keenan-Bolger? Related to Ray Bolger?

  • another_steve

Josh Groban sang with the Gay Men’s Chorus of Washington D.C. as part of President Obama’s inaugural celebrations.

    Please.

Does it get better than that?

    • I’ll admit I teared up over that performance. The voices were divine, and the President had invited the Gay Men’s Chorus. It was a watershed moment, even if a subtle one.

  • Sam_Handwich

“make them hear you” is a really lovely song, and this was a very good performance

    • another_steve

      Very popular among LGBT choruses.

      For good reason.

  • Hank

I just wish, that for those of us, that cannot get to NYC for the performances, there was a way to watch ALL of the performances on-line, rather than just bits and pieces.

    • JoeMyGod

Broadway Backwards tends to post the full clips rather slowly over the months following the show. If you go to their YouTube channel there are dozens of full performances from over the years.

      • Hank

Thanks Joe for the feedback. I guess, I am looking for “instant gratification”! ;( I grew up in NYC, and my parents took me to Broadway since I was 8 years old. I truly miss seeing the original casts perform. Road shows are just not as good in my opinion. When I was in DC, I got to see the previews, before they hit Broadway, at least.

        • another_steve

We share a similar background, Hank. I also grew up in NYC (1950s). My mom was connected to the NYC arts scene and made sure my sister and I got to all the Broadway shows. Mom worked with Kitty Carlisle Hart when Kitty was the head of the New York State Council on the Arts.

          Good times.

          Great shows, great performances.

          • PopChips

Kitty Carlisle? I LOVED her on To Tell the Truth!

          • another_steve

Mom used to get invited to Kitty’s holiday parties in her Manhattan penthouse. At the office, she and Kitty would often find themselves standing next to each other at the women’s room mirror, making themselves pretty. Doin’ girl talk.

Mom knew I (a very gay man) was enthralled by that kind of gossip, and would share with me some of the details.

Oh I could tell you stories, PopChips…

  • We’re going to need art more than ever over the next few years.

  • EdmondWherever

Y’all can keep those muscle-bound, GQ twinks in their leotards. Josh Groban curls my toes.

    • lymis

      Cool. More for us.

  • Jeffrey S Laymon

If anyone knows where to find the clip of “At The Ballet”, please post. I have the one from 2012, but haven’t seen the one from this year. Thanks.

  • HKDaniel

Hello in There is not from the Divine Miss M, yes Bette covered it but it was originally from John Prine’s self-titled first album. It has many wonderful songs, including Angel from Montgomery and Sam Stone. He is a true treasure and one of the great singer songwriters of American music.
    Show some respect.

Besides, his version is SO much better than hers.

    • Cucker “Dick” Tarlson

      Thank you.

    • JoeMyGod

I mentioned John Prine first in my post.

      • HKDaniel

I know, I was referring to the program attributing the song to The Divine Miss M.

  • David Walker

I still wish some guy would take it upon himself to sing “Will He Like Me?” from “She Loves Me.” That song haunted me from the first time I heard it. Barbara Cook couldn’t have made it more obvious that it was written for gay men…she was good that way. But to hear a man sing it…no “translation,” “no apologies,” just this most honest song the idea of which each and every one of us has lived through. There is a version on YouTube by a very good future Broadway singer, but it needs to be a Broadway Backwards number. Please see what you can do, Joe.

    • Claude Jacques Bonhomme
      • David Walker

Yes, except that he flips between “he” and “they” and that’s kind of copping out. I’d live with the one I post here if the sound were better and he didn’t have a misunderstanding with his accompanist/tempo. But this one’s honest about it.
