ORLANDO: Local Businessman Launches Scholarship Fund For LGBT Students In Honor Of Pulse Victims

The Associated Press reports:

An Orlando businessman is raising money for scholarships for gay students in order to honor the 49 patrons killed during the Pulse nightclub massacre. Barry Miller said Monday the fund would award 10 scholarships each year, each worth $4,900.

Students would have to self-identify as “out,” attend an institution of higher learning full time and have a 3.0 GPA. Pulse survivors or family members of victims who died will be given special consideration. Miller is working with the GLBT Community Center of Central Florida and the Central Florida Foundation on The 49 Fund.

Annual in-state tuition for Florida’s state universities currently runs about $6500. Other fees and textbooks add another couple thousand.

    This is how you MAGA.

  • SunsetGay

With all the horrible news that constantly flows out of Florida (endless Republican worship, Trump, Pulse, ponzi schemes, Florida Man) it is the people of Orlando who give me hope for the future of the Sunshine State.

    Better to light a candle….

    • Why?

      • TuuxKabin

I guess Craig is quoting: “It is better to light a candle than curse the darkness.” – Eleanor Roosevelt

That’s how I took it. Sleepy?

        Get some:

          • TuuxKabin

Love my coffee like I love my dogs. Black and strong smelling.

I knew this old hippie chick when we lived on campus. I was sitting on a friends porch with him and she walked by,grabbed a small piece of honeysuckle from his fence. She held it up and yelled,”honeysuckle, nectar of the gods!” I would do that with coffee beans.

          • TuuxKabin

This ol’ hippie dawg used to scent candles with honeysuckle. I think it was Hills Brothers, coffee processing plant on the SF side of the bridge from the east bay. Driving pass it was heaven, even as a child. Then driving towards the Golden Gate, passing by Aquatic Park and Ghiradelli the smell of chocolate was another pleasure.

Oh yea,I’m aware. I used to live in Oakland.

Nice to have a positive story. What a great man to give so selflessly.

OT, but today is Notorious RBG’s birthday – Happy Birthday to a woman who has spent her career defending equality!

  • Treant

Are these scholarship funds something anybody can donate to, or are they generally private?

    • NancyP

It sounds as if it will be an open foundation, but if not, you can always donate to POINT, which is a national tuition assistance scholarship charity for college students who are out and who are kicked out of the house / out of college by their parents – some reason beyond poverty.

    • My BF Benja has an international LGBT rights blog in Barcelona and he wants to know the same thing. If someone finds information can you post it here please? Here is his blog if you like to follow developments internationally – he is writing about Malta today http://www.benjaaquila.com/2017/03/malta-pm-urges-commonwealth-members-to.html

Happy cat! What happens if he mates with Grumpy Cat? We get a litter of little gray Neutral Cats?

It was Barry DILLER not Miller. And describing him as a “local businessman” is weird. He runs IAC/InterActiveCorp and Expedia, Inc.

  • BeaverTales

It’s easier not to think about this, but it’s also hard to forget how this event changed so many young irreplaceable lives overnight.

LGBT people and their friends died simply because our lives don’t matter to these religious nutjobs… they don’t even see us as human. And they are allowed to collect more arms than the militaries of some of our allies.
