Feds Grant $8.5M To Pulse Massacre Victims

Reuters reports:

The victims of a mass shooting at a Florida nightclub in June 2016 will receive nearly $8.5 million for emotional and financial support for victims’ families, those wounded in the attack and responders, the U.S. Department of Justice said on Tuesday. In a statement, the department’s Office for Victims of Crime (OVC) said the funds would be granted on Wednesday and distributed by officials in Florida, where 49 people were killed at a gay nightclub in Orlando in the deadliest mass shooting in modern U.S. history.

“This award will reimburse victim services costs for operation of the Family Assistance Center in the immediate aftermath of the shooting, and ensure that victims, witnesses and first responders receive necessary services to help them adjust in the aftermath of violence, begin the healing process and cope with probable re-traumatization,” Marilyn McCoy Roberts, the office’s acting director, said in a statement.

Similar funding was granted to victims of other recent mass shootings in San Bernardino and Charleston.

I smell a new Executive Order coming, because that money could be better sent flying his fat ass to Florida to golf.

    • Chucktech

Such an “Office for Victims of Crime” certainly seems incongruous with this administration.

      • billbear1961

        Regime, Chuck–regime.

      • Tomcat

Isn’t that the same office they told us to go to after they kill our healthcare?

      • james1200

Maybe the Office for Victims of Crime can reimburse all 330 million of us after the Trump administration implodes/is impeached/OD’s on whatever drugs they give him?

      • MonochromeMouse

“And now we’re paying victims for dying? I like people who fight back and live, ok.”

        • Ray Taylor

“This award will reimburse victim services costs for operation of the Family Assistance Center in the immediate aftermath of the shooting, and ensure that victims, witnesses and first responders receive necessary services to help them adjust in the aftermath of violence, begin the healing process and cope with probable re-traumatization,”
‘This award will reimburse victim services costs’ and ‘receive necessary services’: Sounds like the victim’s families get nothing.

          • Friday

Well, it means they get necessary services; I don’t know if this program is about compensating directly with money. And it’ll make other sources of help freer to apply to other things.

          • Beagle

It looks like it means more that victims won’t be out-of-pocket for expenses. More reimbursement than compensation.

          • Ray Taylor

            yes.

      • Boreal

The shooter was the victim to this administration and its supporters.

Sorry. Maybe this will help your digestion. If it doesn’t draw blood away from your stomach.

And he ridiculed Chris Christy about Oreos??

    • safari

Strangely this is about much we’ve spent already flying his fat ass to Florida.

  • Chucktech

I had no idea there was such an “Office for Victims of Crime” in the DOJ and that it provided this kind of assistance. Pleasantly shocked.

    • billbear1961

      Same here.

    • Friday

      I think it’s pretty new, ie, Obama-era, I think.

  • bkmn

If you qualify for this money, you might want to apply for it sooner rather than later…before Blimp and Sessy yank the funding.

  • billbear1961

    A pleasant surprise!

    Sessions must have slipped up.

Too busy trying to destroy evidence of the regime’s Russian connections, I suppose.

Every once in a while you need a reminder that this country can do good things for its citizens.

    • billbear1961

This is going to become rarer and rarer, unless we can jettison the regime.

  • Tomcat

trump wants to know how he can get his share of this money.

    • bambinoitaliano

Did he not claimed the disaster fund on his Mar-A-Lago? Some $17 million from Hurricane Wilma?

  • Bj Lincoln

That was very nice. The new administration probably doesn’t know about this so they better grab it ASAP.

    • billbear1961

      Yes, indeed.

  • Gay Fordham Prep Grad

Gee, and if we had effective gun control, this would not have cost them a dime…BECAUSE IT WOULD NOT HAVE HAPPENED!

    • bambinoitaliano

NRA should add another $50 million from its insurance policy for the victims.

  • Rex

Door on the Office for Victims of Crimes to be quickly repainted to read Office for Victims Suffering from Republican Butt Hurt.

  • JoeMyGod

$8.5M seems like a massive amount, but if divided equally between the wounded, the families of those killed, and the first responders, that’s probably less than $50K per person. I can’t even imagine what the final medical and psychological bills would be for the survivors.

    • JoeMyGod

And of course there’s never really a “final bill” for emotional damage….

    • Rex

No amount of money can erase the memory of being any part of this senseless act.

Not enough but is there ever in something like this?

    • The_Wretched

$8.5M sounds pretty small to me for exactly the reasons you state. It’s also the same bill paid for Trump to have 3 weekends at Mar-a-Lago. It could be fully paid and more by Trump just staying in DC for a month.

    • Nic Peterson

And nothing about gun control. SAD

    • Friday

Still, wish we could charge that bill to those hatemongers who encouraged and applauded this crime.

      • Ryan Conrad

        Who is that?

That’s great, but since there are two multi million dollar accounts already going to the victims, maybe federal money could be spent in some other way benefiting the Orlando LGBT community. Especially in this climate.
