Trump Demands That Congress Investigate Whether Obama Abused Investigative Powers During Election

CNN reports:

President Donald Trump is asking Congress to look into whether the Obama administration abused its investigative powers during the 2016 election, White House press secretary Sean Spicer said in a statement Sunday.

“Reports concerning potentially politically motivated investigations immediately ahead of the 2016 election are very troubling,” Spicer said, posting the statement on Twitter. “President Donald J. Trump is requesting that as part of their investigation into Russian activity, the congressional intelligence committees exercise their oversight authority to determine whether executive branch investigative powers were abused in 2016. “Neither the White House nor the President will comment further until such oversight is conducted,” he added.

The statement comes a day after Trump accused former President Barack Obama, without providing evidence, of wiretapping his phones in Trump Tower in the weeks before the November election.

Remove this traitor and criminal from office immediately!

this is getting too crazy for a lot of Republicans I’ve noticed

    • Todd20036

Is it though? Most of Trump’s base are heavily into conspiracy theories.

I guess we have to rely on trickle down sanity.

        • Palmer

It’ll have to be trickle-up sanity.

          • Piet

either way, it’ll be about as effective as trickle-down economics, so relying on it is going to be a fool’s game.

  • Gerry Fisher

“Neither the White House nor the President will comment further until such oversight is conducted” is politician speak for “I’ll just leave this right here.” As if Trumplethinskin has enough self restraint for that.

    • Dazzer

He and the White House have looked at the optics of him attacking a former President and have opted for a way of kicking the ‘issue’ into the long grass.

This is the only way they stop 45 from being held accountable – so they’ve passed it on to Congress in the hope that it will be forgotten.

      • David Walker

The thing is that 45 never forgets anything. He’ll be back.

The POTUS can’t demand that Congress investigate a delusion.

True; they usually only investigate their own delusions.

Folie à deux (/fɒˈli ə ˈduː/; French pronunciation: [fɔli a dø]; French for “madness of two”), or shared psychosis, is a psychiatric syndrome in which symptoms of a delusional belief and hallucinations are transmitted from one individual to another.

Perhaps this should be “madness of the multitude” but you get the idea. However, I think that Congress is not mad, just cravenly self-interested… as they squabble over better deck chairs on the Titanic.

But that’s assuming a Congress not run by Repugwhores.

      • Carl

This is the party of Birtherism and Benghazi. This is the party that fixated on Hillary’s private e-mail server. It doesn’t matter how implausible the claim is. This is not party whose base understands the world enough to recognize when something is too far fetched. They lack the cognitive skill to recognize their own hypocrisy, even when confronted by facts.

They’re looking for a narrative to latch on to. They need confirmation bias so they can stick with their tribe. We may laugh at Trump’s latest absurd claim, but the Brietbart bubble will embrace this shit and run with it. We’d be fools not to underestimate to power of bullshit again.

        • -M-

Trump got this idea, like so many others, from Breitbart and immediately echoed it back. So already bubble approved.

People don’t understand that my distaste for the man goes back long before he ever considered running for office. It precedes his reality “stardom” as well. I saw him as the asshole he is when he first started getting media attention as a hot shot young NYC realtor. Yeah, I’m old enough for that.

      • Carl

I never though about him much until he put that poor girl’s reputation through the wringer when he threatened to take her Miss Universe title away for publicity. Remember that one? I think she kissed a girl at a bar or something.

      • leo77

Having lived in the NY/Metro area my entire life I’ve been exposed to Trump for decades. I concluded long ago that he was little more than a low-brow, vulgar, con artist, who if has has a gift for anything, it’s the ability to find credulous believers that he could sucker into his next scam. That he had to resort to seeking Russian financing of uncertain provenance has been no secret and is probably at the heart of why he won’t release his taxes. At 70 years of age he’s never actually assumed responsibility for anything, so none of this is a surprise. His behavior since the election is exactly how I assumed it would be.

It is wholly appropriate for the NSA to have been monitoring communications that Trump had with Russia. It is likely they were monitoring what was being sent between the Trump tower and the Russian bank to which Trump had a linked server. It isn’t too likely that Obama ordered this, it is probably SOP for the NSA.

This is Breitbart publishing fake news and then the White House tweeting it out. Perhaps Obama should sue Breitbart for a lot of money for libel and defamation of character. If Republicans would get off their asses and investigate Trump and his campaigns likes with Russia things would get a lot clearer.

Right. As Lindsey Graham implied – it’s illegal for Trump to divulge information about wiretapping, if it happened. And if it did, Obama himself wouldn’t have ordered it.

But to your point – for once, Trump is caring about civil liberties. What does he have to hide?

  • j.martindale

This is his constant fallback strategy. Never stay on the defensive. Always stay on offense. Lie and accuse others of fault in order to deflect attention from what you are doing. I just hope the American people can wrap their head around the fact that when a man is running for President of the United States, he does not have carte blanche to collude with an enemy power. His right to privacy ends when the question of national security begins. The system of justice is entitled–no, is REQUIRED to investigate allegations of his treachery.

Because his supporters don’t have analytical skills. All they have is a feeling that they are supposed to be in charge, and that supremacy has been wrongly taken away from them. What they are really saying is “he simplifies things down to soundbites I’m willing to believe.”

        • Uncle Mark

That’s also their piss-poor justification for the racist & bigoted statements he makes…since many of those statements reflect their thinking. Since they would be punished in the workplace and maybe society for what they’re thinking, Herr Drumpf has become their bannerman, who will do it for them.

Furthermore, his supporters don’t understand how the system works, let alone how other countries, treaties, policies, etc work. Cheeto makes simple, uneducated statements, as they would make, so he’s also a reflection of their thinking & solutions, except his followers actually have been deluded into believing that he knows how the system works (because he’s so damned “rich & successful”), when it’s obvious that he’s as inexperienced and unknowledgeable as much of his base

Red Cap is free. They work for tips. I usually just have a suit bag and they are pleased to be of service. When I arrive at Penn Station, I get off the train and stand on the platform for a minute until I spot a Red Cap delivering someone and hail him. Then I say I need a cab to UES. I tip well ($10 a bag should do). But it’s worth it. I also dress well. Not sure that makes a difference. Although I suspect it does.

          • TuuxKabin

No. GCT is strictly commuter to northern suburbs, NY & Ct.

We’re overnight out of PigPennStation to Chicago, five hour layover, maybe meet SkokieGuy if he can get the time, on to Portland, Oregon on the Empire Builder. Then coastal Oregon, near and around Newport for the total eclipse of the sun. Continue on to SF/east bay, then back east via a more southern route, via Chicago return NYC. Upper and lower berths all the way. Without even having a bucket list we’re checking off two things that are kinda life time wishes. Three week trip total.

          • Johnny Wyeknot

Well, good! It makes it easier for me to follow you from Washington!

          • TuuxKabin

Why follow. Come along. Make it like “Some Like It Hot.”

          • Johnny Wyeknot

So very very tempting. Unfortunately, I blew my travel budget on Venice!

          • TuuxKabin

Venice can be a hell of a drug.

We could put you in the upper. We’d be cozy in the lower.

          • TuuxKabin

ETA: wrong song. But there it is. We’re going in a whole other direction.

          • wayne

yes we want to be prompt. our jobs depend on it. but always remember, we can’t deliver to you what hasn’t been given to us

  • GayOldLady
  • BobSF_94117

Sounds like they’re gonna hold their breath until they turn blue. Sounds OK with me, assuming they mean it literally.

  • dcurlee

Yet again deflecting to distract from his own wrong doings

  • sword

Congress needs to appoint at least ten investigative committees on which all GOP members must attend. What better way to keep ‘the children’ occupied until the adults return in 2020.

  • -M-

    Proceed, Trumplthinskin.

  • Westcoast88

This is the perfect distraction from what Trump was doing with the Russians.

  • Halou

(4/4) Neither the White House nor the President will comment further until such oversight is conducted.

Yeah, we get it already. You’re a career liar. Jesus. Come up with something believable at least.

  • Stephen Elliot Phillips

    I can hear it now
“if only the libtards would leave president trump alone so he can do his job.
    They are undermining our president”

The collective amnesia of the right is amazing. Obstructing obama for 8 years, investigating the clintons for 30 years…..but we should have special snowflake etiquette for a republican

    • -M-

And a divisive, bullying simpleton elected by neo-nazis and loyal to Putin Republican at that.

    • Cucker “Dick” Tarlson

That was exactly the sentiment of one of the tens of supporters at the pro-45 rally here yesterday.

“Give him a chance!!! Don’t be underminin’ him!!! He won!!! Ur loosers!!! Obama!!! Soros!!! Fake news!!! Hillary!!! Benghazi!!! Build the wall!!! Git over it!!! Leave our preznint ALONE!!! Quit whinin’, u snowflakes!!!

  • geoffalnutt

This is a show for the Trumpanzees, too, in hopes they’ll “git all riled” up. Trump would love unrest…as further distraction. He’s desperate…and I love it.

  • Gretchen

I find myself longing for the days when I was terrified of Mitt becoming president. What the hell is wrong with these people? It’s like they watched every Batman movie and decided to role play the villains destroying the world.

    • RoFaWh

You would be horrified at how many people do not clearly distinguish between reality and the fictions of games, movies, etc.

I offer as evidence the innocents who wander into the Craigslist science and math forum bursting with questions about Star Trek “technology.”

      • Gretchen

I was not aware Craig’s list had science and math forums. My only experience with it was buying a “chiweenie” puppy who now weighs 45 pounds. Lesson learned.

  • Etranger

A great distraction (without any basis for investigation) from the important investigation into the Russian interference into the election (for which there is a reasonable basis for investigation) or Trump’s conflicts of interest (for which there is a reasonable basis for investigation). We are in serious trouble in our country.

    • Claude Jacques Bonhomme

A distraction, of course. Not without risk, since it keeps the focus on Russia and other conflicts of interest, and may force disclosure of other elements.

If there was just case for FISA to grant a warrant, the basis of that just cause may be forced into the limelight.

  • teedofftaxpayer

And you know what’s sad? They will investigate President Obama but they won’t investigate Trump and Company over Russia. And that’s F’D UP.

  • boobert

It’s best to ignore his disturbing behavior and stick to legitimate issues.

  • SilasMarner

I really do think it’s time for the straight-jacket for this looney tunes.

  • EqualityForAll

Are there any mental health professionals here (or anyone for that matter) who would agree with my observations and assessment? Mind you, I am NOT trained in the mental health profession, but it seems obvious even to me.

    • RoFaWh

The Orange Liar’s mind is far too complex to be neatly classified as being in one DSMV category or another. Rather like ground meat processed too long in the Cuisinart™, gray and horrible.

  • Robert Adams

    How dumb is this guy?

As President, he has the entire Department of Justice at his disposal, including the FBI, which is run by a guy who swung the election his way. But he wants a bunch of political hacks, called Congress, to investigate?

What next? The Ringling Brothers along with Barnum & Bailey?
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x3SxEOvAOEg

    • David L. Caster

Any legitimate investigation by those branches would likely lead right back to Trump. He doesn’t want that.

  • Claude Jacques Bonhomme

Trump is “the Deflector in Chief”.
    — Nancy Pelosi

    Says it all

  • Lars Littlefield

Jason Chaffetz wishes to thank Trump for this opportunity to grand stand on the national stage for no reason except to grand stand.

  • Cuberly

So lapdog Spicy gets to do the dirty work of attempting to legitimize the kings lunacy.

We’re in Queen of Hearts territory. Every rant and rave accommodated out of fear. Seriously, fuck the GOP.

  • Claude Jacques Bonhomme

There should be a 5th branch to this diagram: the unhinged factor. It’s illustrated by Trump tweeting about Arnold / Apprentice, right after tweeting about Obama.

  • witch

Another, oh look a unicorn !!!

  • RJ Bone

Hey Bannon! Tell Breitbart to run some stories about Obama spying on us in about thirty minutes. It’ll be yuuuuuuge!

Hey Spicer! Have a story run about Obama spying on us in about an hour! Ha! I’ve got him now! *crappy, faux gilded attempt at evil laugh*

*goes back to shitting out Tweets*

  • Wynter Marie Starr

Better watch out Mr. Ego. They might turn around and investigate YOU. I have NO doubt you are the one that cheated. Have you ever been faithful to anyone other than the creepy thing you have for Ivanka?

  • Claude Jacques Bonhomme
    • Ninja0980

Yup, all of those monsters now have free reign to do what they want.

  • Orly

Ah, desperate distraction time I suppose.

  • Kruhn

This man is certifiable, but the problem is that this is a distraction. Watch for a bigger threat coming from Bannon and the Shadow Cabinet while Combover Calligula (this is from comedian John Fuegelsang) accuses Obama of wiretapping his office.

  • david fairfield

So he says nothing to see here, but while you’re at it look into wire tapping. Just want to be clear.

  • Ninja0980

He’s trying to deflect attention off himself by playing up the hate for Obama he knows his base still has.

    • RoFaWh

Want to know what the Orange Liar is up to? Just pay attention to the “problematic behavior” he accuses others of. He’s become very transparent in that regard.

  • wds

And immediately @jasoninthehouse got a hard-on and is ready to start investigating – After he continues his wet dream of HRC…

  • NancyP

This from the guy who invited a foreign country to hack Hillary’s campaign.

    • Gianni

Yes, and in talking about this possible wire ‘tapp’ of his phone, he commented how really bad it was to do that during “our sacred election”! SACRED ELECTION – the one in which he chided the Russians to hack Hillary’s communications to please find the 30,000 emails. Wasn’t so ‘sacred’ then, apparently.

  • Piona O.

How stupid can this man be? There can be only two outcomes from such an investigation. One, there were no wiretaps and Trump’s paranoia is exposed. Two, there was a wiretap and the probable cause that the Justice Dept/FBI/CIA/NSA used to obtain an order from a judge for the wiretapping becomes public. WTF is wrong with Trump? He seems more unbalanced by the day.

    • RoFaWh

The Orange Liar is so unbalanced already that it’s questionable whether “more” has meaning.
