Live Video From The Winter Party

I’m down in Miami Beach for my favorite event of the year, the 24th annual Winter Party, which launched when I still lived here. I’ll be live-streaming this weekend during the daytime events over at the JMG Facebook page, so starting at 3PM click over throughout the afternoon at the top of hour to watch the festivities.

The entirely volunteer-run Winter Party has raised millions for South Florida’s LGBT and HIV/AIDS groups. And perhaps unlike similar dance-oriented gay events, it draws a sizable number of bears and older guys. Like me! Each live-stream will run about 15 minutes or until I get distracted by the need for a cocktail.Β

      I was wondering earlier how long McMaster will stay on Team Trump since Trump seems to have no interest in listening to any of the advice McMaster has given him – McMaster advised against saying “radical Islamic terrorists” but Trump used it repeatedly at the SOTU, McMaster advised strongly against gutting the State Dept. budget, yet Trump has not listened.

      • Sam

        Just want to clarify that that was not a SOTU. You have to be President for at least a year before having the honor of giving a State of the Union speech. The performance he gave Tuesday night was simply a “Presidential” Address before a Joint Session of Congress. With any luck he will never get the chance to give a real SOTU.

Nobody else saw it, but he was hanging on to the good-time place (knowutImean,Vern?) I thought about what I should do for a few seconds. I sure as hell wasn’t gonna swat him. I dropped my drawers so fast that he jumped again. The lady never missed a beat – she said ” Oh, my that is a big one.” That one looks like it’s about 3″ across.

    Over on Political Wire, the guys are speculating that if transcripts exist proving collusion between the Trump gang and the Russians, they will not disappear. At the very least–it is being said, apparently–copies are probably being kept with one or more friendly governments. Britain and Canada are spoken of–and Sweden, now, as well.

    I read on Daily Kos recently that Kurt Eichenwald said last week on MSNBC that if the FUCKING (that’s me talking, not KE) Republicans don’t take their duty to investigate seriously, foreign intelligence agencies will expose what THEY know.

    If such agencies or their governments possess copies of any transcripts proving collusion, we will see them from foreign sources if OURS fail us!!

    I hope this is TRUE!!

    • LesbianTippingHabits

      Not re tipping, but it’s pretty pathetic if America has to depend on foreign countries for information about how our own government is or is not functioning. Sad!

    • another_steve

      I can’t imagine the Republican leadership in Congress allowing serious investigative hearings. Such hearings would only hasten the end of Donald Trump’s presidency and bring disgrace to their party.

      I’m guessing the way this will play out is that intelligence will be leaked either to the Democrats or to journalists.

      • billbear1961

        Steve, whatever it takes to SAVE US FROM THESE FASCIST BASTARDS.

      • Tawreos

        Since when do republicans care about being disgraced? Their base will keep voting for them no matter what they do.

        • another_steve

          There’s a bunch of them however who are in swing districts. For them, a major party scandal (e.g., proof positive that the Russians were working for their party leading up to the 2016 election) could cost them their seats.

          Darrell Issa — Republican monster from California who narrowly won his last election — is an example of that. Sensing the runaway train coming his party’s way, he’s called for an independent investigation of Russia’s involvement in the election.

          A Hail Mary attempt on the scumbag’s part to save his seat the next time he comes up for reelection.

American intelligence may also have picked up some of the exchanges between Putin’s thugs about what they discussed with Trump’s henchmen.

    How the Trump Administration May Be Skirting Its Own Ethics Rules

    The hiring of three former lobbyists to work in the White House raises questions about how the Trump administration is enforcing the president’s executive order on ethics.

    https://www.propublica.org/article/how-the-trump-administration-may-be-skirting-its-own-ethics-rules?utm_campaign=sprout&utm_medium=social&utm_source=twitter&utm_content=1488641908

    “Consider Shahira Knight, President Trump’s special assistant for tax and retirement policy.

    Lobbying disclosures show that Knight lobbied the government on a host of retirement and tax issues for financial services giant Fidelity. In one case, she lobbied against a regulation requiring financial professionals to act in the best interests of their clients when it comes to retirement accounts such as 401(k)s. The regulation is strongly supported by consumer advocates and strongly opposed by Fidelity. Retirement savers lose billions of dollars a year because of conflicts of interest in the industry, the Obama administration estimated.”

    Picked up from a PW poster:

    Trump flashes anger over Sessions recusal, Russia stories in tense Oval Office meeting

    The president erupted with anger over the latest slew of news reports connecting Russia with the new administration — specifically the abrupt decision by Attorney General Jeff Sessions to recuse himself from investigations into Russian meddling in the 2016 campaign.

    Sources said the president felt Sessions’ recusal was unnecessary and only served to embolden Trump’s political opponents. The attorney general made his announcement Thursday just as Trump returned to Washington from a trip to the U.S.S. Gerald Ford in Virginia for a speech about his agenda as president.

    ……………………..

    β€œWe should have had a good week. We should have had a good weekend. But once again, back to Russia,” a senior White House official said, expressing the frustration simmering in the West Wing following the news earlier in the week that Sessions failed to disclose during his confirmation process that he had met with the Russian ambassador twice during the election campaign. Sessions at the time was a senator on the Armed Services Committee and was also helping the Trump campaign.

    With Marine One waiting on the South Lawn, Trump and his team engaged in
    an animated exchange — captured by press pool cameras peering in through the windows from the White House South Lawn. Trump then left the office for the helicopter, taking the hands of his young grandchildren and joined by his daughter Ivanka and Kushner.

    Priebus and Bannon were planning to join the trip, but suddenly after the president’s eruption those plans changed. One source said both men volunteered to stay behind in Washington, with another source saying the president seemed to concur that they should.

    As President Trump was in the air aboard Marine One headed for Air Force One on the tarmac at Joint Base Andrews, a last-minute phone call was made from the West Wing to the team on board the president’s plane with a directive to remove Priebus and Bannon from the manifest, sources said. They would not be coming to the Sunshine State.

    Trump Will Unveil New Travel Ban on Monday

    President Trump β€œis expected to sign on Monday a new executive order on his controversial travel ban at the Department of Homeland Security,” Politico reports.

    β€œIt is unclear how significant the changes to the current order will be or whether the White House will continue a court fight over its old order.”

    This is odd: β€œEmployees at DHS were instructed to work from home on Monday morning.”

    Intelligence expert on Trump rants: ‘target starts getting buggy, because he knows that he’s caught’

    Malcolm Nance, counterterrorism expert and intelligence community member who has been deployed to intelligence operations around the world, was on MSNBC this morning to discuss Donald Trump’s tweetstorm and the growing collection of information verifying that Trump aides continually met with Russian officials throughout the campaign and after the election, before Trump took office. Those revelations sent Trump on a accusation-filled Twitter rant this morning, where Trump essentially confirmed a wiretap was in place at Trump Tower. Enter Malcolm Nance this morning who says this is the type of behavior you might expect to see when people know they’ve been caught:

    https://twitter.com/kylegriffin1/status/838066601870131201?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw

    [“If White House asks how info is collected, they’re preparing a cover-up,” says Nance.]

    Nance dove into the wiretap accusations, noting that if Donald Trump himself were the target of the wiretap, the intelligence agencies would not have to share that information. Nance calls this moment and Trump’s confirmation of a wiretap a β€œhistoric” moment. WATCH:

    NYT: to obtain a wiretap, DOJ wld need gd evidence of a serious crime or that Trump was an “agent of foreign power”

    If true, this is the biggest scandal in American history. Full stop.

    Totally OT, but I have to say that I am really enjoying When We Rise it’s pretty good. The real only issue I have had is when they decided to age up every character so celebrities could play the them. I honestly thought the young cast was doing a much better job.

    • houstonray

      We just watched the first two parts (4 hours) and it’s been very good. I haven’t seen the “aged actors” yet (other than Cleve of course) but I think they are all amazing actors. It will be sad to not see them anymore.

      But yes, really good so far!

    • Hue-Man

      I thought the series was well-done (and will reserve any negative comments). The 1 hour documentary was what really hit me when they talked about the 1960s and the overwhelming isolation, knowing that you were the only gay on the planet and that being gay was truly horrible. No gay icons, no gays on TV, radio, movies, and only PG gay references in the occasional book. (Little did we know that Dr. Kildare and Perry Mason were played by gay actors!)

      I don’t think 21st century gays have any concept of how invisible gays were in the 1960s. It’s frightening to think that this is exactly the kind of world the Talibangelicals want to legislate. https://uploads.disquscdn.com/images/6ffa64ada552df2b63d591a1dd6e364884f12a48c1d8fe0e6ce754af43bfff63.jpg

      Actually, I thought the “celebrity” cast had a much tougher job though. The first part, (mostly) in San Fran through the early Plague Years, had a much tighter focus, plot-wise.

      I was impressed by how DLB was unafraid to air so much “dirty laundry” (maybe in our eyes, but definitely in larger society’s). From all kinds of divides in the (nascent) LGBT movement: gender, race, class, political style/tactics, to non-monogamous relationships (some cringe-worthy—speaking ONLY for myself!). DLB was definitely writing a Winner’s History—which made that little disclaimer at the end [“By the way, we’re all facing deadly threats again!”] that much more of a gut-punch.

      How did y’all feel about Ken’s arc? Being a person of faith myself (I came to LGBT-affirming Christianity a HELL of lot easier than he did! The blessings of my Episcopal upbringing), I generally liked it. But (speaking of cringe-worthy), I couldn’t help feeling “JMGers gonna HATE that he sold out to Christianists just to get/keep clean” (actually, I hated that, too—but I had, um, faith that it work out gay-affirming for him in the end ;-/)

      • JCF

        OK, here’s where I get personal: confession’s good for the soul, right?

        You heard Cleve Jones talk about working in Sacramento, my home town, right? [No, I’ve never met him.] Well, just *one* of the many times he’s been gay-bashed, was IN Sacramento. Mid-80s. When I lived here, after college.

        I was either newly out to myself, or not quite (late June 1986, to be precise! That’s another story). So the Bee had the story of Cleve’s gay-bashing (I think it included a hospital bed interview). Nervously, I commented on the story (ala “isn’t this horrible? This man was gay-bashed”). My mother’s response: “Well, IS he gay???”

        [Yes, you may curse my mother here.]

        This is the confession part: as completely APPALLED as I was, I never confronted her about it. Not then, not ever. [I did come out to her, years later, but she was on her death bed, and I don’t think it occurred to me to dig up the past.]

        Watching WWR, and Cleve’s repeated bashings, brought this up again for me. I didn’t speak up for MY PEOPLE, when I was the best (if not only) person who COULD have confronted my mother’s hateful bigotry. I apologize to you all (and most especially, on the rarest chance he sees this, to Cleve).

    OT: I took a nap this afternoon trying to get over this cold. I was binge watching the BBC series Versailles which is set in the 1600’s when I fell asleep. I had this bizarre dream that I was there dressed in modern day clothes and people were all around me enquiring about how I was dressed (T-shirt, jeans and sneakers). I was trying to explain that was how people dressed in the future and they didn’t believe me. I realized I had my cell phone in my pocket and were showing them pictures and was sharing some of the music I had on my phone. I took a video of them and was playing it back when my brother called on the phone and I woke up. All during the call I kept wanting to get off the phone with him and check my videos – of course there was no video there but it was such a real dream

    • Johnny Wyeknot

      How did the 1600s smell?

      • DaddyRay

        I didn’t notice but I do remember that I was frustrated that I hadn’t updated my music and didn’t have anything current (which is true in real life)

      • DaddyRay

        Interesting questions, I don’t think I can ever remember smelling in a dream. Is that a thing

        • Johnny Wyeknot

          Funny but after reading about the upcoming desert super bloom I dreamed about it last night. Didn’t smell a thing, but it was in color. And I was lost. At least I had on my pants.

        • Johnny Wyeknot

          Wasn’t that outdoor space designed by a woman?

      • Earl

        Well, have you ever been to a farm?

        That’s partly what the cities would have smelled like. Horses, being used to transport everything left little gifts on the roads; which were mostly dirt. Then there was the human waste disposal system; chuck the contents of the chamber pot out of the window, but not the baby. πŸ™‚ There would also be the industrial smells, ammonia made by aging pee and then using it to clean clothing. Tanners, which used old processes to turn cowhide into leather.

        If you were able to bear it without slathering Vicks Vaporub under your nose, you’d be doing well.

        • Johnny Wyeknot

          Add to it the stench of rotting teeth, probably.

            SONNET 130
            My mistress’ eyes are nothing like the sun;

            Coral is far more red than her lips’ red;

            If snow be white, why then her breasts are dun;

            If hairs be wires, black wires grow on her head.

            I have seen roses damask’d, red and white,

            But no such roses see I in her cheeks;

            And in some perfumes is there more delight

            Than in the breath that from my mistress reeks.

            I love to hear her speak, yet well I know

            That music hath a far more pleasing sound;

            I grant I never saw a goddess go;

            My mistress, when she walks, treads on the ground:

            And yet, by heaven, I think my love as rare

            As any she belied with false compare.

          • Johnny Wyeknot

          • Earl

            It’s the one that follows this one. πŸ™‚ What age does to us; t’is the most grievous of tortures.

            Shall I compare thee to a summer’s day? (Sonnet 18)

            William Shakespeare, 1564 – 1616

            Shall I compare thee to a summer’s day?
            Thou art more lovely and more temperate.
            Rough winds do shake the darling buds of May,
            And summer’s lease hath all too short a date.
            Sometime too hot the eye of heaven shines,
            And often is his gold complexion dimmed;
            And every fair from fair sometime declines,
            By chance, or nature’s changing course, untrimmed;
            But thy eternal summer shall not fade,
            Nor lose possession of that fair thou ow’st,
            Nor shall death brag thou wand’rest in his shade,
            When in eternal lines to Time thou grow’st.
            So long as men can breathe, or eyes can see,
            So long lives this, and this gives life to thee.

    O/T: From the Washington Post, book critic Carlos Lozada reviews the latest from conservative Australian activist, Nick Adams. In his book, Adams chronicles his saga to obtain a green card against the combined maniacal forces of entrenched government bureaucracy and the pernicious left as they collude to keep him out of the United States. lol

    From Mr. Lozada’s review:

    “In a tweet early Friday morning, President Trump hailed Nick Adams’s new book, β€œGreen Card Warrior,” as a β€œmust read,” suggesting that it offered lessons on how to reimagine the U.S. immigration system.”

    “Adams concocts a theory of personal oppression based on the consular officer’s Facebook page, which outs him as sympathetic to Democratic politicians and gay rights. β€œIt is abundantly clear to me what has happened,” Adams writes. β€œThis man thought he knew me from the documents that had been lodged, and didn’t like me because of my politics. . . . I believe this man acted arrogantly and abused his position because he wanted to vilify an enemy of the Left.”

    Keep it up – if Russia dumps Trump it’s all over

    Is Russia Preparing to Cut Losses on Trump?

    The heat has been turned up by Congressional Democrats on the Trump administration’s ties to Russia. Meanwhile, the Kremlin has already begun to look elsewhere for friendlier ties, leading to speculation that it may be getting realistic about what it will get from the Trump administration.

      What is not so funny is with Trump I somehow feel we haven’t seen nothing yet and none of it will be good

      • billbear1961

        At the moment he’s behaving like a cornered rat or a wounded jackal, and that could make him even more dangerous and unstable than he already was.

        The support we see for him among border guards, in ICE, among the police, in the FBI–in the military, too?–could mean real trouble if he decides to defy the rule of law.

        He’s planning to unveil the new immigration EO Monday, and they’ve asked DHS employees to work from home that morning. Why??

        I’m also, like many others, wondering about a terrorist outrage they might stage or permit to take place so they can declare a state of emergency and make a power-grab.

        If anti-Trump protests are BIG enough, we may be able to defeat a coup.

        But if people are intimidated by furious cops and soldiers . . .

        A GOP Congress might very well do NOTHING to stop him, and even if the courts–encouraged by Democrats–TRIED, they’d need SOMEONE to enforce their rulings. Who would do that if law-enforcement and the military sided with Trump??

        It would be up to protesters in sufficient numbers in the streets to stop the coup.

    • Michael R
  • That_Looks_Delicious

    Some rich irony: Harper’s has published the 1905 letter from Trump’s grandfather, Friedrich Trump, begging unsuccessfully not to be deported… from Bavaria! The reason was his refusal to do mandatory military service.

        He can rant and rave like a six year old and still use twitter in “strategic” ways. Bad news about him comes out – distract and deflect.
