TONIGHT: First Episode Of When We Rise, Dustin Lance Black’s Four-Part LGBT Rights Mini-Series [VIDEO]

I’ve been waiting in vain all day for an updated trailer so let’s go with the original one below. The A.V. Club sets up the mini-series that launches tonight:

“Each generation has its own epic confrontations it must deal with,” narrates Cleve Jones (Guy Pearce) over the opening scenes of Dustin Lance Black’s When We Rise. When he makes this statement—one that’s as sweeping as it is non-specific, which could also describe chunks of this eight-hour television event—it’s 2006, but it could be shared at any point in his life or the viewer’s. But Jones is speaking to a twentysomething interviewer who knows enough to profile the real-life prominent AIDS and LGBT activist, but seems otherwise woefully undereducated about a struggle he’s inherited and that Jones has lived through. The older man gently chides him—and, by extension, his generation—for his ignorance, but then patiently tells the kid a story more than 40 years in the making, that nevertheless has many chapters still unwritten.

A similar dynamic occurs on the macro level of When We Rise, which patiently offers context for any and every viewer. Black’s retelling is admirable and ambitious in its intentions, even as it leaves something wanting in the execution. The writer-director’s obviously done his homework, recounting notable moments in modern LGBT history as well as the intersecting movements that help make it. Just as important, he made sure there were queer people of color in and behind the scenes. Such diligence from the writer of the Oscar-winning Milk is no surprise, but it’s also practically a necessity in the wake of Roland Emmerich’s Stonewall, which framed that watershed moment in LGBT history from the perspective of a clean-cut white gay man to the exclusion of others—namely, the trans women of color who actually lit that powder keg.

O/T, but still relevant to bigotry:

Louisiana GOP politician in blackface doesn’t even have the common sense to apologize:

    http://www.rawstory.com/2017/02/gop-frontrunner-in-louisiana-house-race-caught-posing-in-racist-tiger-woods-blackface-costume/

    • Ragnar Lothbrok

Saw that on twitter. What a pig

      • FAEN

Why is it every time a republican does something horrific and is called on it we’re accused of being ‘overly sensitive’? Shouldn’t it be clear in 2017 that blackface is insulting, racist and insensitive? Why do they have to be told?

        • McSwagg

In a word, “gaslighting”. My family engaged in the this type of behavior of “insult” followed by accusations of “overly sensitive” when called on it for decades. They may still be at it, but I no longer am aware of it because I haven’t seen or heard from them in decades. Republicans and my family will never change their ways.

    • Cuberly

Is that one of Tahd Stains “real” down home folke?

      Sounds like it.

    • Carl

Stop trying to make black face a thing, republicans! It’s never going to be a thing!

      • edrex

        ….anymore.

        • Carl

          Touché.

      • TampaDink

Actually, in this case, it is a republican. So as much as we wish it wasn’t ever or won’t ever be a thing, apparently with this asshole it definitely is a thing.

      • J Ascher

If Ted Danson couldn’t get away with it when he was dating Whoopi Goldberg, no one can!

      • McSwagg

I just saw where Rachel (?) Dolezal is back in the news. She’s the white woman in Spokane that identifies as black. Apparently she can’t find a job.

    • Robincho

      Anus & Andy…

    • Ninja0980

Since he’ll likely get reelected, what’s the point of giving an apology, especially since he isn’t sorry for what he did.

    • David Walker

Probably hobnobs with PerKKKins whenever PerKKKy’s in town. Also, the tantalizing thing is that he was asked to leave the church. Surely the church ladies have the inside scoop and a little “donation” to the church would encourage their tongues to wag. (i.e., “Pick a little, talk a little, pick a little, talk a little. Cheep cheep cheep. Talk a lot, pick a little more.”)

  • another_steve

    Taping the entire series.

Hubby’s and my anticipated life expectancy does not permit live viewing with commercials.

    • Johnny Wyeknot

You do realize, of course, that your statement really makes no sense. It doesn’t work that way. 🙂

      • another_steve

        Got ya.

I was never good with math.

    • edrex

jesus! how long are the commercials?

      • Ray Taylor

The 1st half was mostly commercial free. Then about every 15 minutes there was 10 minutes of commercials (so it seemed).

        • edrex

after watching episode one last night, i get EXACTLY what you meant.

    • danolgb

Commercials pay for the show. These things aren’t free. I’m sure you enjoy getting paid for your work.

  • Ragnar Lothbrok

    DVR’d!

  • AW

    Gotta record this tonight.

    • Ray Taylor

I’ll say this about the show: Very good overall.
The dates were kind of jumbled up. One minute Jose and the Black Cat were featured (early 60s) and TI Naval Station. I was stationed there at that time.
Then the story is the middle 70’s in the Castro, Harvey Milk time. Then (80s) AIDS. The story came across that all this happened in a couple of years not the 20 years that actally were covered in this first episode.
Also they implied that beatings were common. Problems with the Police were comon in the 60s. By the Late 60’s we were pretty much left alone, the police had their hands full with hippies and drugs.

  • another_steve

    Withholding judgement.

I was a big long distance runner in the 70s through the 80s. Ran a couple of marathons every year as well as well as cross desert races. Always took care of my eating, physical health, and exercised until I’d have to go to bed by 7;00 pm every night. When Jim Fixx collapsed of a major heart attack out on a morning run it gave me pause. That’s when I decided not to worry about exercising to extend my life and concentrated on exercising to look as physically good as I could. I was way ahead of the ;young gym bunnies so prevalent today. I still hit the gym every day, but if I’m lucky I’ll just suddenly drop dead without warning and not have to suffer much. That’s my goal in old age these days. Of course, a good fuck is appreciated every now and then. 😛 🙂

        • TampaDink

“…but if I’m lucky I’ll just suddenly drop dead without warning and not have to suffer much. ”
We should all be so lucky. 😉

Tom’s very distracting. He’s such a tease – his YouTube channel leads off with SLEEP …. WITH TOM DALEY.

    • Ray Taylor

I’m not I wish them the best. My partner is 15 years younger too.

O/T: “Donald Trump” May Appear at White House Correspondents’ Dinner, After All

On Saturday, we learned that President Trump will not be appearing at this year’s White House Correspondents’ Dinner. This is a break with tradition; the occupant of the Oval Office has been in attendance for 35 straight years, and the streak would be longer than half a century if Ronald Reagan had not been shot. However, The Donald does not like the media, and does not like Trump jokes (even gentle ones), and both commodities will be present in abundance at the event. So, he’s out.

As we noted, the downside to opting out is that it could transform a gentle ribbing watched by a moderate number of people into a brutal satire watched by millions. Now, a move is afoot to have Alec Baldwin attend the event as Donald Trump. Baldwin has not committed yet, but he loathes Trump, and surely knows the kind of attention that his appearance would get. The odds are very good, then, that it happens.

They’ve certainly got PLENTY of material for SNL this coming Saturday, as well.

    • Lazycrockett

The issue bout this is that you are going to need someone else to write the material, which equals 2 paycheck unless Baldwin does it for free.

      • David Walker

        Is Bruce Vilanch doing anything?

      • Skeptical_Inquirer

I think some might volunteer and you could have a whole bunch of writers throw in a few jokes each.

      • zhera

The only thing better than Alec would be Rosie.

        • Ray Taylor

Both would be better. Rosie is in the cast of the show. She has several good lines.

    • bambinoitaliano

Alec Baldwin, Melissa McCarthy and Rosie O’Donnel and the cast of SNL should all attend and play their weekly characters.

    • Skeptical_Inquirer

I like the idea of turning the dinner into one where there are no politicians, just reporters capping on the politicians. I mean, no presidents from now on.

  • JWC

What will Tony Perkins and a million moms and others have to say tomorrow Probably a call for boycotting ABC and all the sponsors

    • Reality.Bites

Tomorrow? It runs for four nights (off tomorrow) so OMM will call for a boycott on Thursday and then take credit for its “cancellation” on Friday.

      • JWC

Ya like they brought Target to their knees

    • TampaDink

Didn’t Tony & several dozen moms stop tuning in to ABC once they launched “The Real O’Neal’s”?

  • Jean-Marc in Canada

So looking forward to this. It carries more weight, now more than ever in the age of Trump. It will be interesting to see just how far ABC will let this go vis-a-vis portraying LGBT’s honestly. I’m not expecting HBO, but really don’t want a Disneyfied portrayal either. That said, I have high hopes, especially given the gravitas of all involved.

For a lot of us older gays, this could prove a powerful moment. I know it will be for me. The memories will flood in as if but a moment ago.

    • JWC

a weird thing is Tuesdaynight it is preempted for a message from Trump How poignant is that

  • Lazycrockett

Half way thru a really hot British guy walks by in a speedo.

    • I fell for your Tom Daley joke. LOL. I went to the 50 second mark twice.

  • Mark

Crap. Looks like it is on ABC – which is the one channel I don’t get ever. Damn.

    • another_steve

Don’t have cable or satellite, hon?

How do you survive without that cute Thomas Roberts on MSNBC?

      • Mark

I had satellite once upon a time. The end result was me wrapping a chain around it and hauling it up to the road with the tractor……

        • another_steve

          Hear ya.

Before we had cable installed we had the dish guy come out and access our situation. He got up on our roof with his little “satellite signal detector” thingy and immediately said “forget it; no way.” We’re in the woods surrounded by trees, you see. So we ended up with cable.

          Mainly for the BBC programs.

I could easily live without American TV but I’d be lost without my BBC shows.

          • Mark

I got the trees as well….but no cable of any sort out here. The only ‘wire’ that’s been run was by Ma Bell – and even that is spotty.

    • Carl

Aw man. You’re missing Agents of SHIELD.

    • TampaDink

I bet that you can view it online on their site.

  • Lazycrockett

It’s getting really good reviews from the mainstream press.

  • RyanInIllinois

I know that YouTube comment threads are generally a raging dumpster fire, but the thread under this trailer is a towering dumpster inferno! The alt-right folks have worked themselves into quite a lather over there. Just makes me more excited to see the series!

    • edrex

well….fuck. them. they can watch fox news if abc is too hard on them.

    • pch1013

      You misspelled “Trumpster.”

    • Falconlights

It’s only Night 1 but my wife and I are enjoying it a great deal. If the Dumpsters don’t like it, they can use the remote.

  • Fiona_Alwyn

Thanks Joe from my wife and me. We almost missed this . I just happened to see this post. We had planned to turn the tv off after the news.

  • SnowFlake

    Cannot wait!!!

  • Jean-Marc in Canada

Went over to the YouTube channel to see how it was being received and it’s ugly. So a rejoinder was required:

I’m loving how the straight snowflakes come flying out of the woodwork. Their fear is palpable and glorious to witness. They are terrified and all I have to say is, welcome to our world. How horrifying it must be for them to see other human beings having the same rights, freedoms and responsibilities as them, indeed tragic. They come here and wallow in their impotent rage; again, glorious. As for the whiny Christians who scream “we’re not evil”, newsflash, yes, yes you are. Here’s the butcher’s bill of American Christianity:

It was Christians who fomented slavery.
It was Christians who fomented Native genocide.
It was Christians who subjugated women.
It was Christian who lynched blacks.
It was Christians who spat on, beat, raped and murdered LGBT people.

But by all means, cry about how LGBT’s and others throughout American history have had to fight for their rights. And please, do whine about a mini-series that dares to show the struggle. The fact of the matter is, straight people have been pampered for too long and a little discomfort is in order.

Now, given that most homophobes and the like are somewhat stunted intellectually, I’ll put this in the simplest way possible:

Suck it up buttercup, because we’re not going away, we’re not going to be quiet and we most certainly are not going back into the closer.

    • bdsmjack

      • Jean-Marc in Canada

        By all means.

        • Mark

          May I as well??

          • Jean-Marc in Canada

            Please.

    • Ninja0980

Yup and the we’re throwing you off rooftops argument doesn’t work either.
You want us to have no rights at all with the idea that we should suck it up since we aren’t being murdered.
How about you “Christians” go fuck yourselves instead?

      • Daveed_WOW

Nothing pissing me off more than that argument. They think we should be grateful because they allow us to live.

        • Ninja0980

Especially when we know from history they want to do the same thing here.

          • Falconlights

That is why, when I see that kind of garbage posted that “Gee, at least we don’t toss you from rooftops”, I always start any reply with “Yet.” When all these terrible laws in Africa and the Daesh atrocities against LGBT people, I relied in comments that if Christijihadists thought for one moment they could get away with it, they would follow suit–I still believe it because you see the hatred coming out from the homohaters that feel Trump has empowered them to say/post this garbage.

        • Carl

Yeah, you don’t get a medal for that.

          • vorpal

But you’re forgetting that they’re the self-proclaimed loving moral majority.

          • j.martindale

“Acceptance” gives the other party power. I don’t care whether others accept me or not. I want equality–especially under the law. The Xtians can believe whatever bullshit they want, and reject me and my kind. Screw them. Their opinions are less than meaningless to me. But I will be damned if I will accept any law which permits them to treat me any differently in the marketplace and the workplace. I have self respect. I don’t need the acceptance of bigots.

          • jixter

The Islamic zombies who throw us off roofs want us to have a dead death but the Christian zombies want us to have a living death. I suppose that’s what they’d call ‘pro-life’. Well said, Snarkaholic.

          • Skokieguy [Larry]

We can live as long as we are cartoonishly identifiable so we can be jesters, sources of amusements, & pets. What frightens ‘them’ is when we have equal rights are fully integrated into society and not easily detectable.

Past example: Paul Lynde, Liberace. Today: Milo, Caitlyn

          • 2patricius2

The “Christian” zombies want us to kill ourselves or be beaten to death in the streets. Then they will say it is our queerness that caused us to be depressed, and that if we were not so “blatant,” people would leave us alone.

        • FAEN

          Right? It’s total BS.

        • Falconlights

I really don’t get that “argument” myself. We’re supposed to let the homophobes walk all over us because, hey, they don’t throw us from rooftops?

          • greenmanTN

Though they would if they could. It’s no coincidence that hate crimes are WAY up since the election. The Brown Shirts were the bullies, the rednecks, of the early Nazi movement. They got the intelligentsia and public cowed, then they outlived their usefulness, and then the SS came in.

If you haven’t read it, Eric Larsen’s “In The Garden Of Beasts” is excellent, a lesson in how these things happen, at times so slowly you don’t even see it happening.

They want us to skulk back into our closets so when the Impending Muslim Doom (never) arrives, they will take care of us by rolling a few stale crumbs under the closet door every so often in thanks for not inconveniencing their delicate little sensibilities and worldviews.

Got news for you, anti-LGBT Christian filth: the Muslims aren’t big fans of yours, either. And we’re much better at PR than you are, so if you’re determined to live in fear of some threat that will never come to pass but want to feel comforted, maybe you should start sucking up to us, motherfuckers.

      • Cerberus

That one in particular always infuriates me, because they are killing us. Or at least, they are killing our trans sisters of color by the fucking truckload, but I guess we’re supposed to ignore that and be grateful because it’s done in the shadows rather than dramatically with a rooftop.

Which gets extra ironic when I note that the community who has most reliably stood up for the trans community besides the general queer community has been American muslims.

I am SO in awe of both your clarity and your totally dominant masterful use of my maternal tongue. You totally rock!

I also imagine your own maternal francais is superbly celestial and ambrosial.

Respect, dude! Many fist-bumps, cuz … “Man that is SO lit!”

Thank you kindly. When I’m passionate about something, I do tend to be more erudite in my oration or writing. My husbotter finds it romantic.

An unapologetic Christian (“Quaker”) gay black man was the lead strategist for much of the civil rights movement. A number of Christian (“Quaker”) women were involved in the early women’s rights movements as well as in the abolition movement, and at least one was likely lesbian. There are a lot of straight American Christians out there who have rights obtained by these LGB Christians. I can’t think of a really prominent transgender activist predating Stonewall, but certainly there were many straight men who may have been saved or whose deaths may have been eased by a Civil War surgeon, found out later to be a cross-dressing woman. These people lived their faith.

      • McSwagg

I’ve noticed that, as a group, Quakers seem to be one of the few, if not the only, denominations that truly follow Christian teachings. Sure there are people in other denominations that are on par, but Quakers ALL seem to be truly Christian.

      • Jean-Marc in Canada

Yes, they did live their faith; alas, the vast majority didn’t and don’t. That singular truth is why I condemn them.

Jean-Marc, you haven’t learned by now to never, EVER do that? Any vid, any subject? If a fatal virus suddenly emerged from YT and wiped out every commenter, the world would become a much more beautiful place!

    • greenmanTN

I have said this here before so pardon the repeat. In a previous incarnation I was a rare book dealer, and I was lucky enough to get my hands on a large cache of Civil War era books written before, during, and immediately after. Valuable stuff. I have held in my own hand a book of collected sermons by Southern ministers laying out the Biblical basis and approval of slavery, and how “good Christians” should treat their slaves (property). I didn’t read it; it was too foul, but I saw it, held it in my hand.

I have no doubt similar books were written when Women’s Sufferage (the right to vote) was the issue.

And now here we are, and the monster we thought was dead, or at least marginalized, has come roaring back for what we hope is their last hurrah. But the only way to MAKE it their last is to face it fight it back once again, though we thought it was over. Apparently it isn’t so, goddamn it, we have to do it again.

I had the pleasure of watching all 8 episodes last Monday at the Castro Theater. This is Television worth watching. Incredibly well done. Lot’s of tears and joy of remembering. Amazing that ABC is broadcasting this.

    • JCF

      8? I thought it was 4?

      • TampaDink

I think that they will be airing 2 one hour episodes each night.

        • Lars Littlefield

But, but . . but that will tragically interfere with watching Dancing with the Boors and The Self Important Bachelor! Oh noooooes!

          • TampaDink

The boycotters never actually watch whatever they are pissing & moaning about…fake romance & used to be’s dancing will always take priority.

    • Reality.Bites

Just a note… it is being broadcast in four parts, with two episodes per night.

Thursday night at 8 Eastern/Pacific there is a documentary profiling the real people whose stories are being told.

I’m wondering if Glee’s Kevin McHale, who plays AIDS activist Bobbi Campbell, will use this occasion to come out.

Bobbi was the first person to go public about having AIDS.

Thanks for that preview, Daniel. Commercial TV is catching on.

Fox TV (of all godforsaken places) may have set the precedent with its groundbreaking “Glee.”

    • Chuck in NYC

I missed last night’s premiere — will catch it on demand — but I’m hoping community groups like the choruses, sports, professions (doctors; journalists; lawyers; etc.) are given at least passing credit for providing many of us the community support to come out.

  • CityWOOF

Not for nuthin’, but I did several days of extra work on this show 🙂 I know there are several good shots with me in them, because I’m in the trailer! Carrying the “Freedom For All” sign.

  • Ninja0980

Man, the youtube comments are a cesspool.

    • Daveed_WOW

      Are you new here?

    • Dramphooey

Maybe Caitlyn Jenner can post a response video asking them to call her.

  • Lars Littlefield

Personally, speaking for myself, I’m really not in the mood to watch a multiple episode TV drama that exploits the history of HIV and the scourge it has been in my life as well as everyone I know or ever knew. This, on top of the current political insanity gripping out nation, is a bit too much at the moment. I’ll pass.

    • TampaDink

I certainly understand your point of view….and I know that I will go through a box of tissues.

    • Natty Enquirer

But maybe the show isn’t really about your life after all. Guess you won’t ever know.

      • Lars Littlefield

As risk I’m very willing to take.

  • DaddyRay

We have to keep retelling these stories so the younger generation appreciate all of the freedoms we have today and understand we still have more work to do.

We are very powerful when we stand together

    • Ninja0980

Indeed, some of the young folks today don’t even know about the struggles of the W years, when marriage bans were all the rage and even blue states were a struggle to get marriage equality in, let alone the horror of the AIDS years and when we were put in prisons, hospitals etc.

      • -M-

I remember thinking when W was appointed by five unelected judges, that maybe it wouldn’t be as bad as it seemed. If anyone was in a position to renege on absurd GOP promises to the social conservatives it was him, right? The lesson is he was as bad as it seemed, Republicans really are that vile, never let your guard down.

        • TampaDink

Next lesson….Hair Furor promises to make us feel nostalgic about the W years.

        • Ninja0980

They still have an iron grip on the party, as shown by Harriet Miers having to withdraw.

        • DaddyRay

I remember thinking the same about Ray-Gun. Everyone seems to love him, I was young and didn’t know any better

        • Falconlights

I certainly don’t trust Republicans. And I don’t understand LGBT people who do.

      • Falconlights

My wife is 23 years my junior and has been out for maybe a decade. However she’s really weird about politics. Hopefully she is learning from this. I have already emphasized that if she doesn’t want us returning to that earlier era, at some point she will have to fight.

    • TampaDink

I forget the source of my philosophy on matters like this, I do know that it was not original but here goes. When I was 21 I found some comfort in reading Rabbi Kushner’s “When Bad Things Happen to Good People” after my dad died suddenly. Fast forward 30+ years & I’ve come to accept that bad things happen to ALL people. I just don’t give a flying fuck when people who preach hate are diagnosed with cancer.

Bryan Fischer posted that he’s been diagnosed with colon cancer

        • Sam_Handwich

          or prostate cancer.

          • Lars Littlefield

Advanced prostate cancer. Most likely not diagnosed until only recently because he doesn’t like people sticking fingers up his butt. That will certainly take the piss and vinegar out of him.

P.S. I have no problem ridiculing the old fart for being a victim of such as pernicious disease, myself having had and proactively taken actions to prevent it’s spread. Every male needs to have the much reviled PSA blood test at least once a year beginning at 50. Even earlier if you have a family history of prostate caner. Everyone, that is, except Trump, all Republicans, white supremacists, Tea Baggers and folks like Franklin Graham, etc. 🙂

          • TampaDink

I’m surprised that he wasn’t able to self diagnose by just opening his eyes during any one of the many times he’s had his head up his ass.

          • Lars Littlefield

LOL! If he had opened his eyes in that position, he’d most likely have thought, “Wow! I’ve really got a big prostate. Cool!”

If Hair Furor were to do the same, he be tweeting about his exceptional size as soon as he wiped the fecal matter off of his eyelids.

        here is the deleted text:

        My battle with cancer begins

        Dear friends,

I have just recently been diagnosed with an aggressive form of cancer of the prostate gland. Deb and I will be going to the MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston this week to meet with the doctor there who will be managing my course of treatment.

MD Anderson is perhaps the premiere cancer center in the world, and so I will be in the best of hands. Every course of treatment available, including cutting edge treatments, is available there on site, from immuno-therapy to surgery and everything in between. By the end of this week, I should know more about the precise strategy we will follow. I anticipate I will be making a number of trips back to MD Anderson in the future for treatment.

For those who listen to Focal Point on afr, after today (Monday), I will be away from the mic for the remainder of this week. I hope to be back in the saddle next week! (I am not, by the way, in any kind of pain.)

Please keep Debbie and me and my entire family in your prayers at this time. Although the journey ahead is not a pleasant one, Deb and I are keeping our eyes fixed on the Author and Perfecter of our faith. We are finding that the words of Scripture are altogether true: “You keep him in perfect peace whose mind is stayed on you, because he trusts in you” (Isaiah 26:3).

Thank you in advance for your prayers, and may God richly bless you in return.

While he’s in Houston, I’d bet that the Osteens would “think and pray” for a price. Their Circus Arena isn’t too far from the Med Center.

        • -M-

May he receive the same compassion that he has shown to others, especially to the ones who can’t afford top notch cancer care.

          • Lars Littlefield

Even more amusing, the US government does not allow US clinics or hospitals of perform the most cutting edge surgery techniques for advanced prostate cancer: Sonic and microwave ablation. There are clinics in Mexico, Argentina, the Bahamas, as well as most hospitals in Europe that have special deals for Americans suffering from prostate cancer. You get a package deal that includes a four week vacation for you and your mate. And the advantage of a successful cure rate in the high 80%. But the USA’s medical establishment has yet to embrace this medical technology, primarily because US physicians are late to the game and trying to push an “american” version of the procedures, thus avoiding licensing fees. If he ain’t going to Bermuda or Mexico, he ain’t getting the best treatment available.

          • Cuberly

Not sure the added cost but my brother opted to have his prostate removed using this really specialized surgical robot. Insurance covered only a portion.

The specialized idea behind it is in using this incredibly expensive radio controlled robot surgical contraption.

That was two years ago, luckily he’s still cancer free. But it did seem like his doctor was pushing him towards this procedure.I spoke with the doctor and wow was he all about the neat tech being used. He even handed me a large four color brochure to check it out.

The excessive cost? Not sure it was necessary. But, even though my brother and I are only somewhat close, I’m glad he’s still around.

          • Lars Littlefield

If your PSA level goes up even half a point it’s worth getting checked. My PSA went up 2 points in two months. After every digital exam I had, the docs insisted I had an unusually small prostate, no enlargement at all. Still, I insisted on having a biopsy procedure (painful as hell) which showed adenomas growing in three of the four profiles of the gland. No cancer had spread beyond the prostate, so I was a candidate for brachytherapy. Brachytherapy is where they seed the prostate with little bits of the isotope Iodine 125. It basically kills off cancer cells (which are weaker than regular prostate cells), leaving the prostate mostly intact. My insurance wouldn’t cover the cost for the brachytherapy. They insisted it was too early and I should wait six months to a year. I ponied up the $6000 for the Iodine 125 “seeds” and the $3000 for the procedure myself, then sued my insurance company which immediately dropped me.

Anyway, being a bossy consumer of medical care I pretty much saved myself from being disfigured by the usual surgeries available in the USA. If you catch it early and qualify for brachytherapy, that’s the way to go. Tell ’em “Lars” sent you.

          • McSwagg

Both CNN and USNews have recently ranked MD Anderson as the number one cancer center. A number of east coast hospitals DO rank very high, just not number one.

Note: The CNN story is about General Hospitals. MD Anderson is a Specialty Hospital. You have to read to nearly the end of the article to see where they list MD Anderson as the top CANCER hospital.

I was born in ’47, but didn’t find myself until about ’82. In these bleak times, it is helpful to me to think of how far civilization has advanced. I am part of the AIDS generation, and there was loss along the way, heavens knows. But where we are today is light years from where I began in life. So be encouraged by how far we come. Know that we can overcome great odds. Maybe this series can buck us up to confront the assholes on YouTube who think because the electoral college negated the popular vote that the bigots now own America. I am not going to let them have it.

    • Bj Lincoln

We can hope this changes a few minds or at least open a few. The wife and I strongly encourage our young friends and those just coming out to learn their history. To not take for granted what they have today. Many are finding out the law changes quickly and can be reversed just as fast. People love to hate. It’s easier. Drumpf has whipped up the haters and they are pointing at our trans kids first but it won’t be long before they come for the rest of us. I do hope you are right that it can steel out resolve to keep fighting. I came out in 82 just in time for AIDS. Yes we have been through worse, but it’s still not equal and we are under a growing black cloud of bigotry. We will survive this but we must fight to keep what we have.

      • Ninja0980

Indeed, especially since the courts are going to be taking a step backwards.

      • Falconlights

Definitely. Our young should learn our history because they’ve lived in an era of relative tolerance. They need to know that we cannot take what rights we have for granted. You only keep freedom if you fight for it.

          • Friday

It’s a photo-op of some kind, for whatever reason they were set up that way, anyone shooting a vertical to get the pink seal on the carpet there might have caught her legs in frame, very likely.

          • Cuberly

I think you’re right, there was a pic posted earlier where ScamWay was poised on the couch taking a pic of the crowd via her camera. So, most likely it was indeed an inopportune pic. So, yeah.

            Doesn’t mean I have to like her though… 😉

Yeah, it hits close to home. And it’s the perfect allegory of what closeted gays do to open gays.

  • boobert

When I turned on abc, it was the end of the bachelor that I never watch. There was all kinds of sexual innuendo. Then you see a viewer warning when ” When we rise” starts. Was that warning at the beginning of the bachelor too ? lol

    • Kieron

I know, right? The “Bachelor” girl says something about how her first BF “never made me orgasm” and I cringed. Right out there in front of God and everyone on national TV she admits this. And our stories rate viewer discretion? WTF man. Jesus.

    • Bubba in TX

To be fair, all I saw was a warning about “adult language”. I was impressed that they didn’t warn the viewers about “adult situations”, like they would in the past.

Trump told the CEOs that if the plan doesn’t accomplish his goals, he’d let them take the fall.

“If things don’t work out I’m blaming you anyway,” he said in jest.

Man, this guy acts like he WANTS to make enemies by the score. Then he doesn’t understand why they want to strangle him.

        • Cuberly

He’s used to having his ass kissed…..other CEOs etc will only accommodate that so far.

Was listening on NPR this morning where the basics of the plan appear to have leaked and the CBO is saying it’ll inflate the deficit and balloon healthcare costs and significantly reduce the number of insured.

          Such an incredible clusterfuck.

          • Skeptical_Inquirer

The funny thing is that some really hardcore GOPers really want none of the popular stuff of Obamacare so they might frack up any repeal because they’re “my way or the highway” while the Dems don’t want to repeal it at all so the Ryan wing will be wringing their hands furiously.

          • Cuberly

Yep, measuring the pressure from the hard-right against a full repeal is where the rub is. Sure seems like there’s a growing opportunity for the dems here. BUT, trump has made a lot of checks his butt can’t cash.

Wondering what window dressing they’ll employ to spin this. Ryan has already floated the idea of “freedom” of choice. Imagine that, the supposed budget wunderkid is flailing. While ignoring the complexity & lust for high profits of the insurance model of “care”. Insurance premiums going sky high is FREEDOM!

    • ByronK

He’s seriously starting to lose it, bigly.

      • another_steve

        Certainly looks that way.

The danger is that the mainstream media will normalize it — as they normalized him during the entire Presidential campaign season.

        • ByronK

I don’t think so. Not after he has basically declared all out war on the media. That could be one of his fatal mistakes. Same with the intelligence community although it’s not clear how many like Comey could be colluding with him. But in terms of winning the war over what’s true, picking a fight with the media is not a wise idea. Ultimately, it’s a battle he can’t help but lose.

    • William

Yes, Obama is crawling through the White House air ducts, listening in and taking notes. The Secret Service should have changed the locks.

      • Blake J Butler

It is one of two homeless shelters in the area, the one i went to will willingly take in LGBT people as long as they follow the guidelines at the facility as everyone else.

The people at the program, or the instructor that told us to go and get 5 hours of service learning of volunteering in a homeless shelter, they really do not know about the services here that are provided to homeless people.

NASW explicitly is against discrimination against LGBT people in any circumstances, my other students are not as familiar with the activities and policies of the SA that are hypocritical and cruel to people that are homeless and LGBT.

  • I was recently in a part of Florida where the population is generally a bit older. A younger gay couple had been seated on the outdoor balcony of a restaurant overlooking the ocean. They were quite openly holding hands. I overheard the older straight couple next to them strike up a conversation and congratulate them on their anniversary.

    Lots has changed since Stonewall.

Indeed. But with the political climate in D.C., it could all change again…for the worst.

            Nope, I haven’t. I’ll take a look at it.

    • TampaDink

This is one of our favorites in this household. Due to our discussion of my interest in watching “When We Rise” (and my man’s disinterest in seeing it) he mentioned how all of the movies that portray all of our lives through the worst of the AIDS epidemic are depressing but none get him more depressed than Boys In the Band…which I’ve grown more fond of over the years. We do agree on this one though….and love, love, love the sound track. Thanks for the reminder to go find that DVD. 😉

      • Lazycrockett

It works cause its just a simple love story with the usual conflicts that a love story has, yes there is some coming out issues and such but at its heart it just bout two people who find love. Very unusual with what had come before. Plus Leah calling Madonna a slag.

        • TampaDink

That is what makes it so charming, along with the soundtrack.

          • TuuxKabin

Madonna being called a slag? Right on.

          • TampaDink

Leah: She’s got a really beautiful voice.
Sandra: And what’s wrong with Madonna?
            Leah: She’s a slag.
            Sandra: Hypocrite.

      • David Walker

Do you think we should tell him that “Boys in the Band” was pre-AIDS? It was even pre the sexual freedoms discovered in the ’70s. Nah. He’s comfortable.

        • TampaDink

He is well aware that B.I.T.B was pre-AIDS, he just finds the stereotypes to be off putting.

          • David Walker

Understood. How were you with “When We Rise” last night. I watched it On Demand this morning and I’m definitely into it and hoping that the kids are watching. I about died when The Black Cat showed up. “This IS a history lesson,” I thought. And while I knew Dustin Lance Black wrote it, I didn’t Gus Van Zandt directed. Tune in early tonight. Apparently ABC is moving “The Real O’Neals” so it plays before tonight’s WWR. Good move on their part.

          • TampaDink

Our local listings indicate that “When We Rise” won’t be on tonight…..I’m glad that they bumped up “The Real O’Neals” before Hair Furor’s live speech before Congress.

When I was a music host at the classical music station, our music director loved to find a theme that would tie together at least an hour or afternoon or the entire day. He would grasp at straws, sometimes, but one way or another he’d find a way for an artist or composer or orchestra to tie in. I remember St. David’s day, but not what we played.

Watched the ABC special and it filled me with renewed anger at folks like Bill Maher and that stupid Muslim woman they had on there last week and so many others who keep saying we need to get away from identity politics and worry about Muslims harming us etc.
The horrors shown in When We rise are still going on in many parts of the U.S. and Republicans want to bring it back nationwide.
Like hell we should quit talking about it, especially since Republicans never do when they need to whip up fear and anger to get their voters out.

Yup. Just listening to NPR today, hearing about how there has not been a peep out of the administration regarding the murders of the Indian tech engineers last week in that bar in Olathe, KS….or even the latest rounds of bomb threats to mosques & temples and desecration of cemeteries. Ugh!

    • Moebym the Persistent Returner

On the contrary, identity politics is more important than it ever has been before, as the Trump Admin systematically targets one group after another. It’s stupid to think that we should abandon it in order to focus on economic issues, as the two areas are intimately tied.

      • Friday

The haters are no good on economic issues, either, that’s why they need scapegoats.

      • -M-

Yes, remember it was others’ prejudices that made ‘issues’ out of women’s and minorities’ identities.

    • Oscarlating Wildely

Which is why for every message that these scum mouthbreathing Trump fascists put out there, we have to counter with two, three, infinite positive ones and reminders to everyone in this community of what we have overcome. What sickens me is the fact that there are kids afraid of the fucking president of the United States for what he will do to them. Kids here and visiting the US afraid of how the government of the US will actively discriminate against them– that is our new country and why these mediated messages are key.

These series are vital to remind us who we are. And to give us the energy for the rest of the world to see that we still proudly say Fuck You to the growing haters in this despot land that was the US.

Cheezus crust! I can’t keep my “I survived ……” t-shirts straight anymore. First Bowling Green, then Last Night In Sweden. Now I have to survive the New York Tunnel Tiles. ROFLMAO.

The attacks of the MTA tiles. You know, there’s a great one of Phillip Glass on the new 2nd Avenue line. I bet we could synchronize it to fall to the tunes of Einstein on the Beach. I did hear that the beaver on the Astor Place stop is homesick for Canada, especially now that Justin took over, and may be jumping off the walls pretty soon. And when those tiles start popping at the Museum of Natural History: Jurassic Apocalypse. What a way to end a school trip!

    • i am pissed internet comments are moving so fast and that my current cnx is very slow. “one night in Bangkok” mtv video here.

I just had a crazy thought – reporters have been looking for someone in Russia to drop the story of Russia financing Trump. What what Trump’s reaction be if evidence started coming to light of Trump scamming Russia. I would think Trump would be pissing his pants if those reports were not well received by Russia. We all know Trump is a snake oil salesman and you just know greedy Trump tried something to scam more money out of Russian scores.

    • Lazycrockett

If Drumpf was scamming Russia’s Oligarchy Drumpf would be dead. Rachel whole show tonight was on Russia Drumpf’s ties. Manafort, Clark. She really tied it all together nicely for average news viewers.

    • Most of Trump’s scams and cons are directed at stupid people, in part because he’s lazy and pretty stupid himself. I don’t think he could pull off scamming Russian financiers or anybody else who really knows what they’re doing.

    • TampaDink

Go to MSNBC & watch (at least) the first segment of The Rachel Maddow Show”…..it is very telling of the links and entanglements that Hair Furor has to Russia.

  • greenmanTN

I was about to pronounce all these precautions modern protesters should take, swim goggles, hardware store gas masks or whatever, but I have never been on the front lines of anything, other than clinic defense for abortion rights.

But I live in a place where, when God wants to give the world an enema, this is where he sticks the hose.

  • Lazycrockett

K Im half way in the tonight’s episode and I thought this was a documentary so Im happily surprised. Though I love a good doc, so far this is very well done.

  • They’re not even bothering to hide the corruption now.

The White House has been accused of withholding information from Congress about whether Donald Trump or any of his campaign affiliates have ever received loans from a bank in Cyprus that is partly owned by a close ally of Russian president Vladimir Putin.

A group of Democratic senators have been waiting for two weeks for Wilbur Ross, a billionaire investor who has served as vice-chairman of the Bank of Cyprus since 2014, to answer a series of questions about possible links between the bank, Russian officials, and current and former Trump administration and campaign officials. Ross also received a second letter on Friday from Senator Cory Booker of New Jersey with more detailed questions about possible Russia links.

    https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2017/feb/27/commerce-nominee-wilbur-ross-bank-of-cyprus-putin?CMP=share_btn_tw

It’s right there, a rather likely conduit of money between Putin and Trump via a rather shady bank…and the Senate Republicans couldn’t give two shits about what goes way beyond the mere appearance of possible corruption, collusion, bribery, and flat out treason.

This is exactly the kind of thread which could unravel the Trump/Putin conspiracy…and they don’t care.

People in Utah managed to make Chaffetz back down on selling public wild lands by going in force and he knows that they’re not liberals. He knew that these people WOULD boot his ass out if he took their hunting grounds from them.

I don’t understand why the same number of people don’t care as passionately that their President is Russia’s butt puppet and their political party is OK with whoring their country out to a foreign hostile power.

Call me Paul Paranoid (or Penolope Pitstop if you’re nasty 😉) but the Presidency really is a Bully Pulpit. Golden Girls, The Nanny (embarrassingly my favorite), and Will and Grace started in 1998 so fell under the same thing.

What did GW Bush give us? “24,” in which a disaster must always be met, with torture if necessary.

So what will Trump bring? “So Who Wants To Be An Obergruppenführer?”

So far the media has resisted, and Trump continually pisses them off, so the dynamics are skewed but the possibility is always there.

Trump says his budget will make government ‘lean.’ It’s really a scam.

Finally. Use the language he deserves.

    • McSwagg

They must have butchered his quote. I think he said his budget will make government “lean like a drunken sailor”.

O/T Late local news has a piece on Victoria, B.C., school board discussions about cancelling trips to the U.S. They report 12 school trips for 400 students planned for the balance of the school year for athletics, bands, and educational trips.

I know students aren’t generally big spenders but 400 students from a metro area of about 350,000 multiplied by similar school districts across Canada must have some economic impact, in addition to the cultural exchange effects.

Trump’s Muslim ban is idiotic, disrupting innocent normal activities without improving the security of Americans.

    • bottom line is, if you have a choice about it, avoid crossing borders into amurka. it’s dangerous here right now. if i were a foreign person, i would make travel plans elsewhere, as these people are choosing.

O/T: My man and I saw Moonlight yesterday. If you haven’t seen it yet, go. It’s a beautiful film!

  • Oshtur

Liked the docu-drama, though it’s mashup approach to history made it more drama than docu- to my husband and I.

But the kids won’t know the difference and them thinking the Black Cat Café was still operating in the 70’s won’t directly harm them – I guess.

    • danolgb

I think there was an artistic decision there to give them a home base and to pull that history into the main timeline. It should be noted that bars were being raided into the 80s in some cities. I feel lucky to have met Mama Jose and glad that her story is being told.

      • Oshtur

Yes, with a docudrama they often make things that happened over a long period of time to many people happen to the story’s protagonist in a shorter time. Still a bit jarring and I hope no one uses it as a resource for a history paper 😉

  • danolgb

FYI.. if you missed it. The first episode is available on ABC.com now.

Quick impressions (then I’ll read y’all’s commentary):

    * When Ken’s boyfriend died in the Navy gun-explosion: was that a true story, or a conflation w/ that horrible case in the 80’s (when there was a big Navy gun explosion, w/ many fatalities, and the Navy initially pinned the disaster on a known gay sailor’s “intentional” action? It was later revealed to be a *known* mechanical problem on the ageing ship). When I saw the cutie-pie in the gun area, I KNEW he was a goner, thinking of that 80s case.

    * Oh Roma, honey: coming out will never be a surprise for anyone w that face! ;-/

    * The three-way offer (for Roma) was obvious, from the invite to tea (to talk “sexual energy”. Oh 70s…)

    * Black’s script obviously focused on intersectionality. I liked it, though some may have thought “Why are they focusing on sexism among gays&lesbians? Why are they focused on the racism of white gays? Why are focused on hair length—social class?” It helped focus the climax of ep 1 however: the barriers our 3 main characters had to overcome, in order to meet-up, for ACTION!

    * Roma and Ken still need to come out to their families. Yoikes…

I’m looking forward to part 2.
