New York City Gets Golden Girls Themed Cafe

Mental Floss reports:

After months of anticipation, fans of The Golden Girls can finally pour one out for late actress Rue McClanahan (who played sultry Southern belle Blanche Devereaux) and the rest of her senior gang at New York City’s brand-new Rue La Rue Café. Plans for the Girls-themed eatery were first announced last summer; now, The New York Times reports, the establishment has finally opened its doors to the public.

Proprietor Michael J. LaRue was close with McClanahan (she used to joke that the two should get married so she could be named Rue LaRue), and when the actress died, LaRue became executor of her estate. McClanahan had wanted her personal items to be available for fans, so LaRue decided to honor his friend’s memory by opening a restaurant that’s equal parts neighborhood café and pop culture museum.

Hit the link for photos of all the memorabilia that adorns the cafe’s walls. And yes, they serve cheesecake.

I’m a little Blache (not as much as I’d like), a lot of Dorothy, a pinch of Rose and soon to be Sophia.

    • Todd20036

I’m a lot of Blanche, a lot of Dorothy, some of Sophia, and a pinch of Rose.

      • bambinoitaliano

Me too. I think the level of Blanche decreases as we age with an increment of Dorothy and Sophia. We will always has that blind spot of Rose. Can’t always stay sharp and be witty and know it all at all times.

      • I’m Blanche. oh what? there’s other characters?

awww. If I had a heart as big as hers, I’d be OK without all the sex.

Cute cafe. Good thing I’m not in NYC ’cause I’d have to swipe this.

The cafe is waaay up in Washington Heights which is seeing a small bit of gay gentrification as Hell’s Kitchen and West Harlem continue to explode with development.

Not and pass a health inspection!

  • Tawreos

When I waited tables I used to always push the cheesecake for dessert so people could get in touch with their inner Golden Girl. I may have to visit to get in touch with mine.

  • Gigi

The Golden Girls is one of my fav shows ever. My man and I have seen each episode dozens of times. The cafe sounds like it would be fun for a one time visit. A good excuse to visit NYC.

    • One of my friends and I used to be able to jump into obscure bits from the show like “I’ll catch you up. It’s later the same day.” All in short hand. No need for a set up or explanation. He passed back in 2007. Golden Girls always makes me think of him. I’m not sure why so many gay men love the show. Of course it was mostly written by gay men so there is some of our humor in there. But I think maybe some of us know that if we are lucky this is how we will spend our senior years. In a house with friends getting by together.

      • Mike_in_the_Tundra

I was thinking pretty much the same thing concerning friends getting by together. Hopefully, everyone has someone to take care of them.

      • Reality.Bites

What amazes me is not how we watched it, but how you meet people in their 20s who watched it growing up but were born after it ended production.

That and I love looking at Betty White in her 60s and marvelling at how young she looks.

        • Rue talked about that in an interview about a year before she died. She got mail from children years after the show went off. Kids that weren’t even born. The show has wonderful appeal. Mostly because it’s funny of course, but also because it gives voice to women we all know but never see as fully developed characters in anything.

          • FAEN

Hopefully the show will never die.

        • Goodboy

Yeah, amazing that the humor and social issues are still relevant today. Look at the 80s comedy back then. Who’s the boss, facts of life, family ties, etc. Shocking at just how not funny any of them were. Shows that should never see the light again.

Exception given to designing women and murphy brown though.

          • FAEN

Loved both those shows. I’m not sure but wasn’t Dixie Carter a conservative playing a liberal.

          • Goodboy

Yep. She was. The writer gets the credit though.

      • Bj Lincoln

I think they also represent a little of each of us. Everyone can relate to all of them. I do hope I have friends to lean on if my wife were to pass before me.

      • Gigi

I’m sorry for your loss. This is one of the (many) reasons that I also liked Looking. Patrick and Augustine loved the Golden Girls!

        • Thanks.

        • Goodboy

I’ll never understand the screeming queens bitching about looking. They wanted another QAF. Could’ve been great.

          • FAEN

Yes. I quite enjoyed that show and was sorry to see it go.

          • Goodboy

Yeah, it wasn’t typical. More real and mature. The problem was that the producers kept listening to the bitchers and the show veered off coarse.

          • Maybe that’s what it was. i thought season two was weird. Patrick just kept waffling. It got boring after awhile. Yes, we all know people like that but we don’t want to watch them on tv. I wanted to punch him in the face. Frankly neither of those guys was right for him. Also, Dom can eat crackers in my bed any time. (He was frustrating too, though.)

          • I found the writing on Looking kind of all over the place. The characters were frustrating because they didn’t know what they wanted and kept fucking with other people as they changed their minds on a whim. BUT I thought that the issue of class (money, careers, educational levels) and the gay community hasn’t ever really been addressed and was interesting. Can people in such different places in their lives have a relationship without being pulled apart by those differences? It was worth exploring. Maybe if the show had gone on longer some of my frustrations would have been worked through. BTW, I still haven’t see the movie so this is based on the first two seasons of the show. it was well acted and I’m sorry it’s gone.

      • FAEN

I’m sorry for your loss matey.

    • kcken

I was thinking the same thing. I really wanna go!!!

  • robirob

I can’t pass on Murder, She Wrote and Golden Girls TV single episodes or marathons whenever I come across them. It’s a quick dash to get some snacks and then I am totally lost in these shows. It’s such comfort entertainment for me.

    • Bj Lincoln

We used to go to sleep to the Golden Girls every night until they changed the line up. Now it’s Fraser on Netflix.

      • Golden Girls on Hulu.

        • Bj Lincoln

We were using a friends Hulu but were having problems with it. He dropped Hulu and we are thinking about getting our own. I am ready for a change. I know every Fraser episode by heart now having seen the full run close to 100 times. It was a great show.

That gif reminds how I always thought Blanche is how Maggie the “Cat” would have turned out as a widow once Brick finally died of cirrhosis. 🙂

      • Derrick Johns

He would have gone to AA and reformed. Speaking of AA, They showed “Come Back Little Sheba” the other night. Lancaster and Shirley Booth were great.

        • Lars Littlefield

Naw. In Tennessee William’s version of the delta in Mississippi there was no AA. 🙂

          • Derrick Johns

Well then, Brick would’ve gone to church and got born again. He’d have saved his soul and his liver. But would Maggie the Cat have gone with him? I don’t think so.

    • Goodboy

      Bea Arthur actually hated cheesecake.

    walking distance from my house!

      How lucky can you get!

      • TuuxKabin

I didn’t read Joe’s link because I read about it in the NYDailyNews awhile back. But they have a Betty White Cake on the dessert menu.

    • TuuxKabin

Not too far from 103rd St on the #1 for us.

  • Omg, We were watching this last night! All the episodes are on Hulu. Season 5, Triple Play…How much mileage does she have on her (referring to Blache and the Mercedes she rented to meet men)….Let’s just say, she’s been around the block…
Freaking hilarious. Between this and Married with Children, my 2 favorite sitcoms, ever.

What a great way for Mr. LaRue to share his friendship with us. I thought Rue was great in everything she did. We will be putting this on our list of places to see when we go on vacation. The wife has never been to NYC. This would be an awesome surprise for her.

    • TuuxKabin

Let us know. We’ll show ya’ the neighborhood near Columbia U, the Upper West/Left Side, and take you for a drink.

The Resistance now has a HQ! LONG LIVE BLANCHE!

I hope they’ve rigged the front door so the violins of the fluid musical entrance cue that is iconic to that series plays every time someone enters the business. It could become a little annoying, but I don’t care. Entrance music is important.

My favorite episode is when Rose bought a cake for her nephew who was visiting from St. Olaf. Dorothy takes a look at it, and says “Whoa.”

Rose did not realize that the cake was penis shaped. She thought it was the shape of Florida.

Down right funny. I do miss Bea, Rue, and Estelle from that show. All four of them were a tour de force.
