TENNESSEE: GOP Lawmakers Flee Protesters At Presser For Bill To Defy SCOTUS On Obergefell [VIDEO]

Nashville’s CBS affiliate reports:

A press conference was abruptly ended when protesters began shouting and yelling over the Republican lawmakers speaking at the podium. State Representative Mark Pody (R–Lebanon) and State Senator Mae Beavers (R–Mt. Juliet) held the press conference to discuss the recently proposed “Bathroom Bill” and “Defense of Marriage Act.”

The room was full of people who, at first, silently protested by holding up signs, but grew louder once Rep. Pody began speaking about the marriage bill. That’s when Rep. Pody said “…Thank you for coming” and walked out of the room. The protesters quickly followed him out of the room and through the halls all the way to his office.

The “Natural Marriage Defense Act” would declare that Tennessee will only recognize and give effect to marriages between one man and one woman and would not recognize any court decision that purports to strike down natural marriage. Pody mentioned the bill received nearly 80 percent of support.

The “Bathroom Bill” would make it illegal for public school students to use a bathroom other than the one that corresponds with the gender on their birth certificate. It failed in legislature last year. It was protested and criticized nationwide, specifically in the LGBT community.

  • Tawreos

These two looked at what North Carolina went through with their bathroom bill and said “Hey, we need some of that.”

    • Garrett Sparks

Especially now, do these people really think no one will say anything? If anything, the protests are going to be much worse than NC and the cancellations will be en masse now that this issue is national news.

  • bkmn

We need a hashtag for when the GOP runs away like this – how about

    #CHICKENSHITGOP ?

    • Todd20036

      How about #REDSNOWFLAKES

      • Walter Maerlyn

They’re red and they’re yellow, as in bellied.
Mixing red and yellow results in orange.
        Perhaps they should be #ORANGESNOWFLAKES

I like #yellowsnowflakes since they have no trouble pissing themselves.

Well…lesbians CAN be very dangerous. For example; never piss off BikerBecca.

Oh, I know. When the civil war comes, I’m counting on her getting on her bike, shotgun in hand and come rescue me (I’m assuming New England will be the first one nuked when Trump has his final breakdown.)

          No. DC will be.

            Kinda like God …

      • GayOldLady

As I’ve warned many times “don’t fuck with the lesbians! we’ll make you pay”.

        • 2patricius2

I misread the last word at first. I thought you wrote: “we’ll make you gay” 🙂

          • GayOldLady

LOL!!!! And there are some of us who would try. 🙂

    • Mike_in_the_Tundra

Gay boys are rather fond of their marriages, cats, and occasional puppies.

      • james1200

Yes, I’m certainly fond of cats and puppies and marriage rights but will I kill for them like Lesbians would? I just don’t know…maybe for the cats.

        • Mike_in_the_Tundra

You have to, or the cats will get you.

          • james1200

We should have just voted a cat in. They’re certainly smarter than Trump and less easily distracted. If we’d just voted for Maru for president, well, it would still be chaos but such adorable chaos! I’d let this little ball of fluff lead me to any concentration camp he wanted ’cause he’s a good boy!

Fuckin’ right we can be dangerous. We’re getting really fed up with the bullshit and may have to do dangerous dyke things. Like protest or something like that.

Dental care should be part of universal health care.

      • Todd20036

Actually, it should. I have to get supplemental dental insurance, and I have BCBS

      • Rebecca Gardner

Yeah, I never understood why dental was different than the rest of your health insurance. It’s so arbitrary. It would be like saying, oh I see you have a broken finger, do you have Hand Insurance? Teeth are part of your body right? So why is it so arbitrarily left out of health insurance? The world will never make sense to me. I think too logically.

        • GayOldLady

Of course I’m on Medicare, but when I had private health insurance most health insurance policies didn’t cover vision health unless you had an eye disease. Is that still the case?

        • Steverino

Nor have I. Hubby has both medical and dental care through the VA (although a vet pretty much has to have a 100% disabled or unemployable rating to qualify for dental as well as medical), and he loves it! They never try to “upsell” him on cosmetic procedures or unnecessary fillings.

We both have Kaiser coverage through CalPERS as well, but our dental coverage was always separate, and of course, with the California State University system the faculty / administator dental coverage was always better and more comprehensive than the support staff coverage. The medical coverage was the same, though. Odd.

        • safari

Dental hygiene is has also been linked to things like heart health.

    • Todd20036

      That’s… that’s a joke, right?

      New England or Manhattan crowder?

  • greenmanTN

Yep, that’s the place where I live. The state motto should be “At least we aren’t Alabama!”

    • Dirk Prophet

People in Alabama say, “Thank God for Mississippi.”

    • Ha ha, I live in Georgia, and I’m sure there are politicians here who would do the same thing, if they thought they could.

Our Governor is a goober, but at least on this issue, he’s decided to not act like one. For now, anyway.

      • MonochromeMouse

The only reason Deal vetoed that is because the TV and movie industry is looking to make Georgia the new Hollywood.

        • Oh, definitely. I’ve no doubt that Deal is not and never has been on our side.

      • FAEN

Well thankfully we’ve booted McCrory out of office.

      • dagobarbz, fine Italian shoes

YOUR governor actually put his brain to work, looked at NC, and said ‘Hail naw.’

Because Georgia is becoming the ‘Hollywood of the South,’ and many shows are filmed there, plus there are the Adult Swim animation studios etc.

Funny thing about the creative/entertainment field, lots of people fall outside of the strict roles creepy religions impose. Passing a bathroom bill in Georgia would have driven the whole industry away.

At least your governor did some due diligence with his research of the issue, and made the right decision.

        At least.

      • greenmanTN

Bill Haslam is our Republican governor. During that first election Haslam stayed away from anti-gay rhetoric, but the Democratic challenger said some really nasty stuff so I couldn’t vote for him either. So I sat that one out.

    • Lars Littlefield

You have my most sincere sympathy.

      • GayOldLady

Greenman and I both live in the armpit of the South, at least we’re not in the butthole, Alabama and Mississippi.

        • Steverino

If you do, consider the urban / suburban areas west of the Cascade Range (the rainier, more forested western third of both Oregon and Washington, especially in or near Portland or Seattle). I was born and raised there. The eastern 2/3ds of both states are politically little different from Wyoming.

Where in NC if you don’t mind my asking.

    • MonochromeMouse

That’s what we say in Georgia.

    • FAEN

      Yet.

    • GayOldLady

Alabama’s State Motto is, “At least we’re not Mississippi”. Mississippi’s State motto is, “At least we’re part of the United States”.

Many in the GOP are now calling such people traitors or anti-democracy foes. It’s quite stunning, really.

  • Ninja0980

I’ve seen comments from some folks about how our side is once again “intolerant” of other viewpoints and this is why we lost.
All due respect to those folks… FUCK YOU.
These people are trying to set up a court case that will make it to SCOTUS with a court they hope will have been remade to one where it will be possible for Justice Thomas or Alito to write a majority option overturning marriage equality and other LGBT victories we’ve gained, something they’ve both made clear they’ll have no problem doing.
And we’re supposed to be nice and respectful?
Bullshit, they deserve to get a preview of what will happen if they try to turn back the clock on us.

I thank y’all for letting me comment on here — I’m a cis-hetero-female and simply do not face the fights you all face. • andrew

Excellent. They chased the snakes all the way back to the rocks they slithered out from under.

  • The problem with polarized politics is that it’s now possible to live in a bubble in which you aren’t aware that public opinion has moved on an issue because you only hear the same memes thrown at you over and over. In 2004 this would have been a winning issue and even a number of Democrats would have supported it. But it’s not 2004. It’s 2017 and now even many conservatives/Republicans, especially younger ones, are in favor of gay marriage or at least are neutral. They didn’t see a backlash coming against such a bill and are shocked that straight people would care so much about gay rights. That’s how far into their bubble they are. (And note: liberals should be just as concerned about our own bubble lest we be similarly blindsided like last November.)

    • The_Wretched

There’s liberal bubble but also the whole election had multiple real defects.

      • The post-modern media culture makes it very easy to live in an echo chamber especially if your views are the dominant ones in your location. It’s a real danger for liberals to avoid reading intelligent commentary from conservatives. Not the bloviating morons on Fox News but intelligent commentators like David Frum. You don’t have to agree with someone to make time for what they have to say and if you disagree be prepared to think about why. Of course these voices aren’t the ones booked on tv shows where they want two people with opposing views to yell at each other for five minutes and then shrug as if there’s no reasonable middle ground or that one can’t be right and the other wrong. Print (and it’s online equivalent) still has some very fine writers and is still a far better source for news anyway. TV covers the first few paragraphs of what would be a print article and then the article goes on for dozens more. If your news is only from TV, you are not well informed. You can’t possibly be. it’s not the nature of the medium to dig beyond the headlines.

        • Johnny Wyeknot

*intelligent commentary from conservatives*? I would read it if I could find any.

          • At the moment the point on-point critics of Trump are David Frum, Evan McMullin and (I can’t believe I’m saying this) Bill Kristol. I’m sure there are more. You have to find independent conservatives who aren’t on the payroll of a right-wing company or think-tank, but they are out there. People stuck being the token conservative (like that c**** on The View) are worthless. I’d almost feel bad for them except they chose to take those jobs and they make many times more than I ever will. But there are conservatives who are worth reading.

          • Johnny Wyeknot

Are you performing In D.C. anytime soon?

    • dagobarbz, fine Italian shoes

I noticed this when I lived in Olympia. Then you get out of the bubble when you go home for Christmas or whatever, and your perspective readjusts as you realize not everybody agrees with you like they do in the bubble.

      • I’ve never been too deep into a bubble. Even in the opera world there are conservatives and as soon as the show is over it was back to temping on Wall Street where people ran the gamut. And the of course back home a few times a year to deep Teabagistan. Even in academia I’d say my colleagues are about a 60/40 split between liberals and conservatives in spite of what the right now wants to present. Yes, there’s the lefty liberal arts department here and there but they are off in their own bubble and no one hardly notices them, even on campus. The stories you hear about how lefties control academia are all from a small number of schools full of special snowflake students who have been coddled their whole lives. The typical college student works part time and does their best to keep up with work and school conflicts since neither wants to accommodate their schedules. (I’ve had to intervene with unreasonable faculty members who didn’t seem to understand that employers are not flexible and the student will have to drop out if they lose their job.) It’s not at all the picture the media is portraying at the moment. We have homeless students on my campus who got evicted from their apartments and are living in their cars and showering at the gym. That’s the college reality these days, not rioting students. That happened once on one campus. It’s not the norm.

They should put ME in charge of Hell… I have so many plans I’d like to implement for the impending rain of faux-Christian ass hats who couldn’t get past the velvet rope up top.

    • dagobarbz, fine Italian shoes

      It’s their top priority, obvs.

  • Gerry Fisher

    Keep smiling, fools….

  • Matt

Republicants are horrible people, no matter how you view them. Ugly and ignorant from every angle.

  • -M-

Related to the antitrans bill, maybe some of you know more definitely but I’m under the impression that Tennessee doesn’t let people born there change the gender on their birth certificate.

  • Gigi

What a couple of cowards. And they call us snowflakes!

  • Will Parkinson

OMG, why must you people be so bigoted when we’re trying to take away your rights?

  • Gene Perry
    • Johnny Wyeknot

As a former Steam Train engineer, this gif horrifies me.

      • dagobarbz, fine Italian shoes

Old movie scene, I hope. I have ridden the Skunk. 😉

        • Johnny Wyeknot

Yes, I think you’re right. I have seen this many times. Fortunately, my train suffered no such indignity!

        • Gianni

It’s a scene from a silent film starring Buster Keaton called ‘The General’. As I understand it, they used a real train in the scene. The trestle has no support at all under the whole middle section, literally guaranteed to collapse on cue.

          • Homo Erectus

The puff of black smoke coming from behind the train suggests to me that some explosives may have been used.

          • Gianni

Likely, to make sure it all happened right.

  • Funny how these right wing nutjobs are fond of calling liberals and progressives “delicate snowflakes” but run away and hide at the slightest bit of confrontation.

  • Michael Hampton

I spoke to Ms. Beavers’ assistant and she told me that they were attacked by the protesters. She tried to make a case, when I asked why she continues to push bills like this when there is such strong opposition to it, that she is digging in her heels after being called the C word and having a vase smashed on the floor. So her personal feelings are more important than actually governing the people who voted for her.

    • Johnny Wyeknot

Thanks for making the call. Sorry about her vase. (not.)

    • dagobarbz, fine Italian shoes

      Wait, what???

She’s against the popular opinion because someone called her names?

WHAT KIND OF POLITICIAN IS THIS???
That’s so childish and absurd…utterly unworthy of a good politician, if there is such a thing. Well, okay, there are a few, but she ain’t one of them.

      • Michael Hampton

Um…#45 ran for President because Obama made fun of him at a press dinner.

    • Bryan

Happens whenever one’s dick becomes larger than their common sense

  • And when they got back to their offices, the lawmakers probably anointed their heads with sacred oil, fell to the floor, and rolled about blathering in tongues.

    • dagobarbz, fine Italian shoes

Or got the rattlers out of the secret cage under the chair so they could do some Snake Jigglin’ Fer Jesus.

      • And the rattlers bit them, and died a horrible, writhing death.

  • John Calendo

    Resist LOUDLY.
    ACT THE FUCK UP!

  • saucetin

Mark P(ar)ody and Mae Beavers! Sounds like a comedy team.

  • Mlawrence

Mae Beavers, what a perfect drag name.

  • gothambear

We have an office in Nashville – I’m going to ask my company to take the lead and come out publicly against these bills as we did in North Carolina. Business pressure works – we are about to expand and hire additional colleagues there.

  • Gianni

“The “Natural Marriage Defense Act” would declare that Tennessee will
only recognize and give effect to marriages between one man and one
woman and would not recognize any court decision that purports to strike
down natural marriage.” …… Sounds like a pretty rebellious proposal. How do they figure they’ll get away with defying the Federal SCOTUS decision on marriage equality? They obviously want to set up a SCOTUS challenge to Obergefell and one can see by the wording that one claim will be that the Supreme’s decision really strikes down “natural marriage” in some fashion. It’s all nuts and based on the mental meanderings of the religiously and fanatically deluded.

    • Piona O.

These loony maroonies who claim to worship the Constitution apparently don’t know how it works. Federal judgments prevail over bigoted little state bills like this one. Why do they not understand this?
