REPORT: Trump Had Boeing CEO Listen In When He Called Pentagon About Rival Lockheed’s Fighter Jets

Bloomberg reports:

Days before taking office, President-elect Donald Trump made two surprise calls to the Air Force general managing the Pentagon’s largest weapons program, the Lockheed Martin Corp. F-35 jet. Listening in on one of those calls was Dennis Muilenburg — the CEO of Lockheed’s chief rival, Boeing Co. Trump, who has repeatedly criticized the $379 billion F-35 program as “out of control,” made the highly unusual calls to Lieutenant General Chris Bogdan on Jan. 9 and Jan. 17, according to two people familiar with the matter.

Muilenburg, whose company makes a fighter jet Trump has suggested might be an alternative to the F-35, was in the president-elect’s New York office for a meeting during the second call. He appeared caught off-guard but was able to listen in on the call, according to the people, who asked to remain anonymous discussing sensitive information. One of the people said the call was on speakerphone.

After speaking with Trump, Bogdan wrote two three-page memos, titled “phone conversations with President-Elect,” dated Jan. 10 and 18th and stamped “For Official Use Only,” to limit distribution. They outlined Trump’s questions about the capabilities of Boeing’s Super Hornet fighter and how it might compete against Lockheed’s F-35C, said the people. About a dozen Pentagon officials were alerted to the calls after they occurred, the people said.

Lockheed has refused to comment on Bloomberg’s report.

  • Do Something Nice

What a fuckwad. Ethics don’t matter to this POS.

  • Todd20036

Lockhead should know better than to deal with Drumpf

    • Lumpy Gaga

Lockheed already has the contract. Boeing is the one dealing with the devil: benefitting from listening in on PeOTUS’ call to the Air Force guy.

Disruption means money changes hands. And like in Putin’s Russia, Trump’s gonna want a taste. Is Boeing going to say “No”?

Gotta admit, it was “savvy” to do it before the inauguration.

  • Max_1

Trump will complain about leaks while holding meetings with people he has not been vetted well.

  • Capritaur

    His pettiness knows no bound.

    • Lumpy Gaga

I like the use of the singular here, even if it is grammatically correct.

It’s like his pettiness and bile are an airborne, systemic poison, instead of a bunch of broken arrows lying here and there.

  • HZ81

God, he governs like a jealous high-schooler. “Okay, you call Chad and I’ll listen in while you ask him about me!”

  • bkmn

Everywhere he goes I see lawsuits – lawsuits that are going to cost the taxpayers lots of money.

    • Xuuths

Why would tRUMP care? He doesn’t have to pay.

” My cartoon is real. I am the creator of my own comic book, and I love living in it ” – Donald Trump ( a real quote )

      • GayOldLady

He doesn’t care. He just wants to look like he’s doing something.

  • So what does it take to impeach this guy? The rest of the world (Russia notwithstanding) is wondering what the hell is going on.

    • Xuuths

The GOP not being in the majority in the House.

    • Cousin Bleh

We have to get rid of Paul Ryan first.

      • canoebum

He’d only be replaced by by Kevin McCarthy, not an improvement. The raucous town halls must continue, along with the daily overload of the Capital switchboard with calls from angry constituents. The public needs to get mad, stay mad and vote these traitors out. There’s nothing more for it.

        • Cousin Bleh

I meant let’s replace him with Nancy Pelosi. But I realize that means we have to put up with this shit for 2 loooooooong years.

        • Ninja0980

Indeed, this anger has to turn into action.
I’m doing my part in my district to ensure our “moderate” Republican will be shown the door next year.

        • kirby7771

Except the GOP, 200 of them no less, won’t be attending townhalls during this break. Orders from on high, no doubt.

          • Treant

Prolly. However, that’ll give them a nice, out of touch air that Republicans simply detest. So that’s not going to go well.

          • Joe in PA

Hey, but our rep is holding not one, but TWO “telephone” town halls. Coward.

          • canoebum

More likely orders from their wives or housekeepers, who don’t want to clean the skidmarks from their drawers. Fucking cowards, the whole bunch.

  • Gustav2

Trump does not have a clue how messed up that was

  • Pollos Hermanos

OMG that is such a huge deal in the defense world.

I worked for a defense contractor ten years ago and we lost an entire federal contract because one of our people accidentally saw some documents from a competitor during the bidding process.

Ohio’s Gov Kasich name has been floated in DC. Remember he tried to eliminate government employee unions in Ohio and lost at the ballot box.

          • Chucktech

Won’t he be too busy with showcasing his proof of all those illegal voters in the NH primary and the general election?

    • Jon Doh

All the press or just the right wing nut job press? It’s probably just some dumb rant, if it was anything important, he would have Tweeted it this morning.

      • Joe in PA

Oh those others are invited, they just can’t ask any questions.

    • SockMikey

Maybe to pontificate about how the leaks (revealing the truth) are so much worse than the truth and need to be investigated and that his “restructuring” of Intelligence agencies is so needed to address this.

I really want to see the illegal usage of apps that encrypt and others that delete messages by those in the White house become a big deal due to their illegality and the preservation of executive records.

Lawmakers abdicating their duties and stated “principled” positions for the sake of agenda.

I find it very hard to believe he cares about the govt saving money. I wonder what the connection to Boeing is.

O/T: “What is the best way to, with minimal costs, set up a daily text capacity for a ground up-grassroots army for pro-Trump daily action items to push back against the left’s resistance efforts who are trying to make America ungovernable?” wrote Clarence Thomas’s wife in an email.

And this is why a businessman can’t be President/ He doesn’t understand that this isn’t like a boardroom. you can’t just do things like this, The sad part is that he doesn’t know any better. I mean this is like three little girls, two talking and one listening because one talking said something bad about the one listening. He is just a petulant child and needs to have his toys taken away when he screws up, like they did with his Twitter. Maybe a time out as well. A few minutes in the corner, one minute for every year of age seems good, may make him think about doing better next time. Who am I kidding, he will just Tweet it was “fake punishment” perpetrated by the “fake media.”

    • Gustav2

This version of the ‘telephone game’ is how he conducted business.

    • Cousin Bleh

I don’t think you can pull these stunts in actual business either. Isn’t this basically corporate espionage?

      • Lumpy Gaga

On the one hand: Delete your account, Muilenburg.
On the other: you just know the stock price went up.

    • lymis

“Maybe a time out as well. A few minutes in the corner, one minute for every year of age seems good, may make him think about doing better next time.”

Well, our legal system has provisions for people who engage in criminal acts being given a time out.

    • bambinoitaliano

Actually an acute business sense is an advantage for any politicians. Trump is NOT a business man. He is a socially inept con man.

      • Gerry Fisher

    • Reality.Bites

Any good businessman is aware of the legal and regulatory atmosphere in which he operates. I would have disagreed with Romneys policies but he wouldn’t have violated the law at every turn

    • Gerry Fisher

Successful, large companies would never hire him. He can operate like this only in a company in which he and his family own most of the stock. Even in that situation, I’ve seen a board jettison a CEO.

    • Chris Baker

Yup. I bet he’s thinking: Lockheed can’t complain/sue because they want the business too much. Boeing won’t tell because they want the business too. I’m sure he’s done that hundreds of times in his business.

    • gothambear

And of course the natural next question is which company gave Trump more in campaign contributions, Boeing or Lockheed? Always follow the money with that one…

    • Hue-Man

It can also be viewed as how American businessmen may be acting when no one is watching. Do you remember the last anti-trust prosecution, real or threatened? ADM’s the only one I can think of from 2 decades ago.

United States v. Archer Daniels Midland Co. was a criminal case filed on October 15, 1996 in which the United States alleged that Archer Daniels Midland Company (ADM) and other corporations and individuals engaged in a conspiracy to fix and maintain prices of lysine and citric acid and to restrain or eliminate competing suppliers of these additives in violation of Section 1 of the Sherman Antitrust Act (15 U.S.C. § 1).

  • Rebecca Gardner

This is insane! How many more things does Hair Furor need to do before we impeach him. Our Republic is at stake. Doesn’t anyone care?

    • Ninja0980

      Republicans don’t.
      Party over country.

  • Ninja0980

Folks keep asking what it will take to get Trump out of office and the answer is simple.
Republicans not having the majority anymore.

    • Rebecca Gardner

Or Republicans finally deciding to do their job and that their Country is more important than their Party.

    • All that it will take is Speaker Ryan and his leadership and Majority Leader McConnell and his leadership demanding that Trump resign or be impeached and removed from office. If they decide to do this, the Democrats will back them up. Trump will be checkmated. They will do this if all wings of their party, including the tea party radical freedom caucus, social conservatives, and 1% super rich wings get together and demand it. The “cross-over Democrats” in Pennsylvania and Michigan who put him in office can stew in hell and frig themselves if they don’t like it, that is not the concern of the three wings of the Republican party that existed before the November election.

  • Tomcat

Sounds like a little corporate espionage to me.

        • billbear1961

They’re going to GUT this country.

          • True. They are already. What they know about Putin’s owning of Trump that we don’t has not been leaked yet. I think it probably has but needs to be verified since its so unbelievable.

  • Friday

Trump clearly doesn’t even understand what these aircraft *are.* Or *why* the FA/18 wasn’t enough when the JSF project was even proposed: the delays and cost overruns were more because the way they did the contract basically *made* a near-monopoly for the corporation that won. Also, two variants of the F-35 are already coming *out,* it’s the Harrier replacement version that’s still hung up as probably having been trying to take the ‘modular’ concept a bridge too far.

    • Johnny Wyeknot

    • VTOL Jet aircraft are difficult monsters. They can’t carry much payload and fuel, the US Marines has had a huge accident rates with the AV-8s, the F-35Bs are most likely too heavy.

The Brits stripped their Harriers of basic stuff like self sealing fuel tans and insulation on their Harriers because of the strain of trying to land these monsters.
