FRC Reacts To “Outrageous” Florist Ruling By Renewing Call For Trump To Legalize Anti-LGBT Discrimination

SUPER SADZ! Via press release:

Family Research Council (FRC) expressed outrage after the Washington State Supreme Court issued a ruling today that puts at risk the home and personal assets of Barronelle Stutzman, a florist shop owner who told two men that she’d be happy to sell them flowers but couldn’t — in good conscience — arrange them for a wedding ceremony that violated her faith.

Of the decision, Family Research Council President Tony Perkins said: “The Washington State Supreme Court’s ruling tramples on our nation’s long held tradition of respecting the freedom of Americans to follow their deeply held beliefs, especially when it comes to participating in activities and ceremonies that so many Americans consider sacred.

“The court also ignored an opportunity to reaffirm the basic principle that the government may not trample on the constitutional rights of free speech and the free exercise of religion. These rights do not stop at the door of your local church, and instead extend to every area of a religious person’s life. The government has no authority to force Americans like Barronelle Stutzman to engage in speech and events with which they morally disagree.

“Americans were told repeatedly that redefining marriage would have little impact on their lives. Yet now courts are seeking to drive families from their businesses – and now today even their homes as the result of crippling government imposed fines designed to force them to deny their faith.

“Barronelle knew her customer and friend identified as gay, yet happily served him for years; she just didn’t want to be involved in his wedding. But the ACLU and the Washington State government couldn’t stand this, and decided to make an example out of her. Cultural elites may succeed in convincing judges to strip away the livelihoods of people but the elites continue to face a losing battle at the ballot box and in the court of public opinion.

“The Supreme Court must correct this gross injustice and we urge President Trump to sign an executive order protecting religious freedom to ensure the federal government does not engage in the same discriminatory behavior as rogue states like Washington. Americans of all backgrounds have suffered the loss of their religious freedoms because of Obama-era policies. The time to protect religious freedom is now,” concluded Perkins.

What if I walked in with my female friend to buy flowers for ‘our’ wedding. We pick them up but actually use them for a same sex wedding. Its simply our choice of product usage, her involvement was identical whether she knew in advance or not.

Just because she was told by this couple what they intended to do with her product, how does it in any way change her ‘participation’ in the event? The only difference in the two scenarios is her knowledge about how her product will be used.

This would sort of like buying a car from a car dealer and later using it to drive to a gay bar. Have we forced our lifestyle down the dealer’s throat (the fundies favorite phrase) just because of our use of the product after purchase? The dealer of course has no control over our use of the car, but this is essentially what Baronelle and Tonnette want to legislate.

[Back to florists – maybe same sex couples need to do this with the cooperation of an opposite gender friend and order flowers for a wedding without disclosing it a same sex event. After the wedding, post photos to the florist’s Facebook page or Yelp review raving about how beautiful the flowers are and sit back and watch the fun]

“The Washington State Supreme Court’s ruling tramples on our nation’s long held tradition of respecting the freedom of Americans to follow
their deeply held beliefs, especially when it comes to participating in
activities and ceremonies that so many Americans consider sacred.”

No Tony, that’s not how this works. If it did then Mormons would all have multiple sister wives. The courts have ruled that secular law can trump behaviours where they is a legitimate secular purpose. This is why we cannot drag you out in the public square and stone you to death Tony for violating the religious laws in Leviticus. It is why we cannot do the same to Kim Davis for adultery.

And when it comes to the florist – she was not invited to the wedding or to officiate at the wedding. She was hired to do a floral arrangement for which she would be compensated. A transaction she routinely engages in for pecuniary gain. The last I checked flowers are NOT a religious requirement of any Christian sect in order to consecrate a marriage.

Not to mention Tony, your claim violates the words of the Apostle Paul in 1 Corinthians 5:9-13:

I wrote to you in my letter not to associate with sexually immoral people, not at all meaning the people of this world who are immoral, or the greedy and swindlers, or idolaters. In that case you would have to leave this world. But now I am writing to you that you must not associate with anyone who claims to be a brother or sister but is sexually immoral or greedy, an idolater or slanderer, a drunkard or swindler. Do not even eat with such people.

What business is it of mine to judge those outside the church? Are you not to judge those inside? God will judge those outside. “Expel the wicked person from among you.”

I couldn’t even watch. I just checked in with the sound off, and he’s still going. I wish that the news media would just tape this shit, fact check it, and play us the highlight reel. He revels in attention.

If these so-called Christians are so pure in heart that they just don’t want to serve the dirty homos, they should have no problem posting signage saying so. Really, save themselves the trouble of an uncomfortable exchange. But… we know how that idea will go over.

    • Nowhereman

Well, they want to get as much of our money first before they spit on us. Their Jesus had absolutely nothing to say about gay people, but he sure had a lot to say about hypocrites and money changers.

  • ErikDC

Arranging flowers isn’t “speech” anymore than making a bed in a hotel room is “speech.”

    • Nowhereman

I agree, but the Supreme court determined that money is speech, so we’re in brave new territory here…

    • I always thought “flower arranging” was a way of expressing oneself actually. Seriously. https://uploads.disquscdn.com/images/509e924a9fdee69c896acfc3458ce6c7335b66d64ad7df8be968db72ecd3170a.jpg

      • Walter Maerlyn

Granted, it is a way of expressing one’s aesthetic and/or artistic talents or lack thereof. But, I fail to see how one can arrange flowers, without using them to form letters and words, to convey actual speech with concrete meaning.

        • Correct! You can;t form letters and words with flowers unless you deliberately use it for that like a Rose Day parade float. But that is a whole different animal.

          • Johnny Wyeknot

‘Rose Bowl’ parade float? Just asking because I love roses! 🙂 and if there’s a Rose Day, I need to know about it!

          • The annual Rose Parade in Pasadena on New Year’s day (or if New Years Day is a Sunday another Day). They play a big Football Game (the Rose Bowl at the Stadium of the same name) and have a huge Parade — I have been twice, with floats made of flowers, mostly Roses. Its the Tournament of Roses and broadcast on Television with marching bands and singers and its very California — watch it on televsion! Here is a float! Orlando Pulse had a float this year at the parade. https://uploads.disquscdn.com/images/f18593460fe7ded415774774a2530ca8e111c5b7c17a27fcab593e888a3f72a3.jpg

Ah! A parade I have always wanted to see in person. Thanks. 🌹

So you wouldn’t be thrilled to receive a pink camellia in your tussie-mussie?

  • Nowhereman

The “cultural elites” are the bigoted conservative christians. Their hypocrisy knows no bounds. If they were really serious about all their “traditional marriage” crap, then they would grill ALL of their customers about their marriage status, divorces, and whether they had sex before marriage. They would keep a little file on them–so they’d know important stuff like whether it was OK to sell them flowers/cakes for birthday parties, but not for any weddings or anniversaries.

  • Brooklyn Joe

Oh Tony! Stomping your little feet – why can’t I discriminate!!

” These rights do not stop at the door of your local church, and instead extend to every area of a religious person’s life. The government has no authority to force Americans like Barronelle Stutzman to engage in speech and events with which they morally disagree.”

Ah – yes – they do stop at the door of your local church until we become a theocracy. What is Baronneta – a nun? No one’s forcing her to engage in speech and events – she’s just selling flowers – she’s not condoning the marriage or attending it.
The ACLU did not choose to make a case out of her – YOU did – a test balloon to get religious freedom laws passed everywhere. If this case flies – you can bet there’ll be more significant items on the agenda than flowers. It’s YOU who are trying to make this an example.
Religious freedom – like everything the right puts out – it sounds so nice – but is nasty as shit

  • Dagoril

What on earth does Tony think Drumpf is going to do, exactly? Issue another obviously unconstitutional EO that will be immediately slapped down by a federal court? “Gays are icky and our legal system doesn’t apply to them, because reasons?” Public accommodation law goes back at least to the days of the Magna Carta, it’s not like it’s some new-fangled liberal plot.

    • Johnny Wyeknot

Perkins sees this only as a fundraising tool.

  • greenmanTN

How very DARE she have to sell flowers for a profit! Oh, the humanity!

  • Johnny Wyeknot

Ivanka won’t let Trump do this. (Hopefully)

    • canoebum

I think Ivanka is getting pretty upset with her Daddy. He ruined her business, and now nobody likes her anymore. She’ll probably go to Nevis and pout by the beach.

      • Reality.Bites

Nobody liked her in the first place

  • MonochromeMouse

Putting a bunch of flowers together has nothing to do with the first amendment. She’s free to refuse to say or write anything she doesn’t want to, but anything else has to be sold to anyone that want’s to buy it if it is available to the general public.

    • A reasonable distinction. If a bakery sold the couple a cake but didn’t want to put two little grooms on it themselves, I’d say that would have been an acceptable compromise.

      • MonochromeMouse

Yup, that is exactly what the first amendment is protecting, not the right to pick and choose who you serve.

  • kcken

Sure, Religious freedom. Except for those Muslim religious people., let’s BAN them. Government banning A-OK in that case. Praise jeebus.

    • Tomcat

And don’t get them started on Seventh day Adventist, Mormons, Christ Scientist Jews and Catholics. Once they get their way on the first one they will go after the others.

    • Friday

Except for anyone conforming to anti-LGBT Christianism in particular, actually. Polytheists know just how much of garbage their idea of ‘religious freedom’ is, never mind their reverse-oppression narrative, even if we don’t happen to be queer at all. This is Dominionists trying to wag the dog about ‘reverse persecution’ into …. domination of all others, even within their own religions.

  • Megrim Twist
  • DesertSun59

Pretending that your business is an extension of your church is delusion.

  • Tomcat

OT Trump says his administration running like a well tuned machine.

Would that be the doomsday machine by any chance Trump?

  • Friday

Such a shameless liar, this Perkins. Her business was never in jeopardy and she’s been well paid for being a political stunt for the Fundies instead of taking the slap on the wrist.

This isn’t even a damn *case* if Christianist lawyers and hatemongers hadn’t been trying to *use* her to try and *manufacture a grievance* against other people’s weddings in the first place.*

  • Michael Hoppe

When the persecutors are thwarted in their attempts at persecuting others, they always scream persecution. Using delusional religious “faith” as a reason to discriminate against others is not constitutional. Practice your stupid religions, but if your delusions affect others, you rights have stopped.

  • Oshtur

Of course the EO he’s whining about would do nothing for this state case. But I doubt Donald or Tony is bright enough to realize that.

  • Jim Gallagher-Barker

In some ways, I kind of wish the EO would come down quickly. So that it can get to SCOTUS quickly, while a 5-4 decision aligned along Obergefell lines is a distinct possibility.

I’d love to see Trump, Tonette & that fat bastard from NOM crying in their beers over losing in just 6 short months (or weeks, if it comes to that).

  • Michael

The false prophet is more worried about power and money than he is about perverting the Golden Rule.

  • [email protected]

Does free speech and freedom of religion also allow business to turn away inter-racial couples? Does it give them the right to turn away Jewish couples or catholic couples? Or does this magically just apply to gay couples?

In truth freedom of speech and freedom of religion do NOT grant the right to engage in discrimination in business services. you do not have to approve of or like the marriage of the couple not is that what is being asked. what is being asked is that the business service that is advertised be provided. But the other side is not interested in religious liberty, they are interested in religious tyranny.

The only “outrageous” thing here is the waste of taxpayer dollars on a case, where Cottonelle clearly broke the law and mounted a “I’m a special snowflake” defense. News flash: she’s not.

  • Piona O.

There would be no financial tragedy here, as stutzman is whining about, if she had bought business insurance….through ignorance/foolishness/naivete, she didn’t…and then apparently hoping to make herself into a xtian martyr in the kim davis mode, she refused a plea bargain….you’ll get what you deserve, baronelle

    • She’s in no danger of losing her home or anything else — she’s already gotten $100,000 from crowd funding, and I’m sure she’ll rake in more. (The bakers in Oregon managed $500,000 plus the amount of their fine.) And if she’d just paid the original modest fine and the token damages, she’d be off the hook completely, but she decided to go for martyrdom.

Also, I suspect business insurance would not cover this, since it’s the result of her breaking the law.

And remember — this is coming from Tony Perkins, who could give Kellyanne Conway lessons in “alternative facts.”

Maybe if the law Tonette wants trump to sign had some verbiage about requiring a business to post a sign in their front window that they do not serve LGBTQ customers to be upfront about their bigotry we could tolerate it a bit more…they won’t do that though because they will lose business from str8 LGBTQ supporters mostlikely. They want to be anonimous, like the KKK with their white hoods. I, for one, would not even attempt to do business with a homophobic business, especially a bakery because I would fear getting something like the chocolate pie Minnie made in ‘The Help’.

  • gwhiz007

Professional homophobes have to make their money somehow I suppose.
