FBI: No Charges Likely For Michael Flynn

CNN reports:

The FBI is not expected to pursue any charges against former national security adviser Michael Flynn regarding a phone call with Russia’s ambassador, barring new information that changes what they know, law enforcement officials told CNN Thursday.

Flynn was fired by President Donald Trump earlier this week after it was revealed that he withheld information from Vice President Mike Pence about his conversations with Sergey Kislyak, Russia’s ambassador to the US. A US official confirmed to CNN last week that Flynn and Kislyak discussed sanctions, among other matters, during a December call.

Flynn initially told investigators sanctions were not discussed. But FBI agents challenged him, asking if he was certain that was his answer. He said he didn’t remember. The FBI interviewers believed Flynn was cooperative and provided truthful answers. Although Flynn didn’t remember all of what he talked about, they don’t believe he was intentionally misleading them, the officials say.

Comey is banking on something here. I wonder how orange his nose is from being so far up Trump’s ass?

I never thought there was a limit to what the right can do, and there is not. Break the Logan act, IOKiYAAR, the old Washington DC saying, it’s OK if you are a Republican.

I also read an article on my Google thread that the right is advocating that Trump kept his promise, the swamp is drained and the Gators are pissed. Wonder how fast that will make the rounds on the right wing sites, and how fast the sheep will believe it

    • Guest

Eye on the prize. We must keep pushing back all elected people and we must keep pushing on all those who claim they are journalists.

This is just Comey giving cover to Lying Paul Ryan and the sedisus turtle, Mitch McConnell, so they can say there is no need for an investigation.

  • Jamie_Johnson

Why do I think that had a Democratic appointee lied to the FBI, they’d be in jail before you can say “emails.”

  • Ninja0980

I love Obama but him wanting to STILL reach across the aisle after all the obstruction and disrespect he encountered by nominating Comey for FBI head was a STUPID blunder made by someone who knew better.
Other then Scalia fucking us all over one last time by timing in an election year, the actions Comey took ensured that not only would Hillary not be President, but that Democrats down the ballot were hurt as well.
And it wouldn’t have happened if Obama had chosen to nominate a Democrat for the FBI and told Republicans to fuck themselves if they didn’t like it.
As I said at the top of this post, Obama was among the best presidents in our lifetime but even good people can make mistakes, and Comey was the biggest one of them all.

    • jimbo65

I posted above before seeing your post. Agreed, Comey was Obama’s big mistake. That and an obsessive need to reach out to the GOP despite repeatedly being rebuffed by them.

    • Guest

Obama made many mistakes, most trying to appease the right. From Shirley Sherrod, who will cause me to never forgive him for that to Comey and so many more. Obama also was way too close to wall Street. And yet, he will go down as a great president, faults and all.

When the left wins again, they should rename everything Reagan to Obama to piss off the right. The right had a goal to have something named for Reagan in every district. The left should name two things in every district for Obama, paying close attention to where the hater leaders live so the hater leaders have to walk outside daily and see Obama’s name. We could have fun making a list and pushing the left year after year to do it.

  • Frostbite

    • andrew

    • popebuck1

I’ve been wondering why Obama didn’t fire Comey, and my best guess is that Obama – who, remember, always plays the long game – figured there was enough out there to bring Comey down once the truth came out. It’s looking worse every day for Comey, so I’m betting that Obama was right.

Martha Stewart went to prison for lying to the FBI.

  • Cuberly
  • Ross

    Huh?

I did not think the FBI could charge a person with crime.

I thought they could only INVESTIGATE if a crime had taken place, and then, if so, they would forward the allegations to the Department of Justice, and then the DOJ would then press charges.

    Right?

    • Correct. However, upon receiving a referral for criminal charges, the DoJ nearly always obeys.

      • Ross

O/T but frightening. PBS Newshour tonight (Thursday) on white male 45-54 mortality rate.
    http://www.pbs.org/newshour/bb/deaths-despair-cutting-life-short-white-americans/

Video and transcript at link. Here’s the chart that was flashed in the reporting.

The graph shows all-cause mortality for those aged 45 to 54 for US
white, non-Hispanics (USW) and US Hispanics (USH), compared with six
other rich nations, France, Germany, the UK, Canada, Australia and
Sweden. It reveals while mortality rates have fallen in every other
nation, for USW they have risen

    • safari

This information has been at least on media like NPR for a number of years. It is probably a major motivating factor behind the insanity we see now. Promises weren’t met; expectations differ from reality; and someone needs to be blamed. These deaths should not be discounted in any way. I don’t mean to diminish them by pointing what they are causing — but all of this points to a deep pathology within modern Americana.

      • safari

I should also say a deep need to fix it. How it gets fixed, I believe, is why we are so polarized: it is a matter of life and death.

      • Hue-Man

I was aware of white middle-age male mortality in the U.S. being high but it was the comparison with other countries that shocked me. Men in those other countries have faced and are facing many of the same economic and social dislocations as their American counterparts. They, however, aren’t drinking themselves to death, overdosing, or blowing their brains out.

I agree there is a profound sickness that is not being addressed. Maybe America is becoming more like Russia!

        • safari

Russia’s male mortality average is in the mid-60s. So, yes. Yes it is.

      • Jerry Kott

Are the stats broken down to education level of the men? There seems to be this mind set in the hinterlands that taking care of your self as a male is sort of Gay to many men. Recklessness concerning health matters is common , diet and exercise are feminine to many men.

        • safari

I don’t know. It’d be something nice to know. I seem to remember such issues during the great depression.

    • That_Looks_Delicious

And that lumping it into “all cause” does a real disservice, because when that data is broken down, the main reason for the increase in mortality for that group is a huge jump in suicides, overdoses and deaths due to prolonged alcoholism and drug use. But the public continues to think of the drug problem as something that happens to young people in the inner cities. Surprise! It is now primarily a problem with middle-aged white males in the suburbs and rural areas.

      • AJ Drew

Like polls, statistics depend on *which* numbers one looks at…

Per the old quote, (and yes, I’ve changed it to reflect the general demographic here…) “Statistics is like Speedos. What they reveal is suggestive, but what they conceal is vital”

        http://www.slate.com/articles/health_and_science/science/2015/11/death_rates_for_white_middle_aged_americans_are_not_increasing.html

        • That_Looks_Delicious

I was just reading some of the back-and-forth between Gelman and Deaton and the statistical adjustments. But in the end, there is still something atypical going on here. As Gelman himself put it on 11/10/15:

“Let me emphasize that this is all in no way a debunking” of the Case and Deaton paper. Their main result is the comparison to other countries, and that holds up just fine.”

or as he summed it up on 11/6/15:

“So, one could rewrite the Case and Deaton abstract to something like this:

This paper documents a marked increase
flattening in the all-cause mortality of middle-aged white non-Hispanic men and women in the United States between 1999 and 2013. This change reversed ended decades of progress in mortality and was unique to the United States; no other rich country saw a similar turnaround stasis.”

          • AJ Drew

There is a difference in what data is being considered now and, truly, what data was available previously (and to jump ahead a bit, I’m not sure we’ll ever be able to scientifically judge any of it, given DT’s already chilling effect upon other govt databases already, and what that might portend for CDC and NIH data.)

    • AJ Drew

So, um, which will come first and be truthful? DT is to blame for this uptick in pre-retirement-age deaths, or DT claims he saved Social Security?

      • Silver Badger

More like an effect and cause.

        • AJ Drew

They were mandated to pay back the “fraudulent” payments at 400% interest with fines leading to bankruptcy, loss of housing, wage garnishments, loss of marriage, and other obvious consequences.

We had two tea partiers in the state who had an affair where one resigned after it was exposed via recording he wanted to start a rumor that he’s a bisexual deviant to cover the fact that he was sleeping with another tea partier who was removed from office at like 3am after her husband caught them at the local hotel near capitol hotel. We’ve also had another GOP member who thought that shooting protesters was a good idea to stop the protests and another GOP candidate who has been caught for his second time stealing trucks to jack off while wrecking their engine by removing spark plugs and revving them while going over hills. Not to mention another party official who liked to spread how gays are evil. Or we can discuss the conservative assistant AG who harassed a gay U of M student for years until he got fired for it. We also have an AG who wants to run for governor that extended our anti-marriage/civil union law to revoke benefits from domestic partners at the local level after the campaign said they wouldn’t do that. (And for the medical MJ users, is still within like the 7th year of fighting medical medical MJ usage despite a state-wide referendum on the topic.) Let’s also not forget that the state GOP immediately re-implemented the emergency manager law after it was repealed and did so in a way that individual citizens via a referendum can never repeal again.

      Now. Let’s discuss credibility.

  • tbj5

There’s a chance that this source is lying; this wouldn’t be the first time Bannon and his ilk got a fake lead supplied to the press.

It totally contradicts the other statements coming out of the works about Flynn’s fate. He got his security clearance yanked; it’s super unlikely that he wouldn’t be facing some charges for lying to the FBI. You don’t get credit for walking back your lies from full lies to pretending you don’t know.

      • tbj5

The FBI NY Branch may be compromised (and they likely sent the false scent here to pretend like Flynn was in the clear now), but the rest of the IC seems to be right pissed at Flynn for both his probable treason and his known idiocy.

Like, he’s an INCREDIBLY stupid human being to not know that his calls were being monitored, and then to lie about the calls.

And the IC is pretty adamant about punishing people who lie to them, under the law.

    • SoCalGal20

The Army and the Pentagon are investigating him so maybe something will come from that. The FBI is dirty so I would be surprised if they recommended charging him. And with DOJ being run by Sessions now I doubt they’ll do much of anything.

It’s possible he’s cut a deal to spill the beans, though.

    • Silver Badger

      • JWC

        It’s gotta stop

    • ‘Called’? Absolutely. Anything done about it? Probably not.

I hafta believe that this will not be allowed to be shoved under the carpet and forgotten

      • AJ Drew

Every aspect of the media (National, State, City, Rural) needs pictures and names of every Congress member that voted to put guns into the hands of the mentally insane. This should be gone again when these sub-humans are running to be elected. Each time an innocent person is killed by an insane gun owner, protests outside of the corresponding state senator should be carried out – outside Congress, outside their homes and offices. Everyone needs to get on board. I will be posting these comments hoping that people get involved. The next victim could be YOU, a friend, a family member or a person who walked the earth unkown to you.

  • ByronK

It became more than obvious during today’s press conference that Trump is not mentally fit to hold office. The lies, the abusive rude behaviour, the self-aggrandizement, the lies, his treatment of the press, his shameful distortion of facts, his lies… it was all on display for everyone to see. But I’m hearing that it just made his supporters love him more and his detractors hate him more. What is obvious is that the GOP government has no intention of holding him or his flying monkeys like Flynn to account. The GOP, with the exception of some honest House members, are hunkering down and putting power before country. I fear that the only resort is civil disobedience and protest which has its own inherent risks but what other options are there? He is clearly unfit for office, a threat to the safety and security of America, and he must be stopped.

    • AJ Drew

Ah, but don’t forget the infighting amongst his “best people,” it will all implode soon enough. I truly believe that. It *seems* like years, but this admin has only been in place for a few weeks.

    • Lazycrockett

The GOP won’t wash their hands of him until it comes out that he was in with Putin to steal the election, which by his mental state today, is fast approaching. Ryan, and especially McConnell both know its coming and they are just hoping to get some shit passed before the damn breaks, the problem is that the WH is so fucking amateurish that nothing is getting done and the Republicans seem scared to write their own legislation and send it the Drumpf cause of the massive blow back from the american public. Those in power are starting to worry bout keeping it. This means we are winning. RESIST.

      • Skeptical_Inquirer

However, the Democrats can’t just say, “We’re not batshit like Trump.” It has to:

        1. 50 state solution: all races contested, even small ones. Even just putting a warm body with a (D) on the ballot would be better than nothing. A lot of women are getting into politics because they’re all “fuck that shit, I’m better than him!” I”m sure they’ll find tons of volunteers for any open contest.

        2. As much as I roll my eyes at a good chunk of Trumpeteers who joined Trump for the white privilege and/or toxic nostalgia for jobs/mores that are not coming back, I also roll my eyes at people who keep thinking that the ticket is to go right. The last thing Dems should do is pander to people who will never vote for them. (I occasionally hear people say creepy shit like “why can’t Dems give up on the abortion issue?” which makes me barf.)

        3. I really think that not going after Wall Street & the banks after they made tons of people broke/homeless/suicidal with The Big Short was wrong. And frankly, I don’t think most of the Dem pols GET IT. Not going after Bush & Cheney was also dumb on Pelosi’s part. Having it hashed over and over on the news might have made the fact that WMDs didn’t exist stick better.

gosh, I became a fan of Siouxsie and the Banshees rather late. I got hooked on the band because of Kiss Them For Me and listened my way back to their older stuff. I saw Siouxsie and the Banshees and the Creatures a couple of times live (the Rapture tour, 7 Year Itch, Anima Animus tour , the 100 club gigs in the aughts, Dreamshow, that’s the ones I remember for now).

          • Lumpy Gaga

Their first US show was at the Starlite Ballroom in Philly, 11/1980, touring for “Kaleidoscope”. Was there, Done that. 🙂
