Senate Dems To Hold Special Caucus Meeting On Trump/Russia As Sessions Refuses To Recuse [VIDEO]

Politico reports:

Senate Democrats will hold a special caucus meeting Wednesday morning to discuss the fallout over news reports that the Trump campaign and Russian intelligence officials were in contact during the 2016 campaign. The meeting, called by Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) and confirmed by a senior Democratic aide, will also discuss how to handle the fallout from the resignation of Michael Flynn as White House national security adviser. The caucus meeting will be held after the 10:30 am votes scheduled in the Senate on Wednesday morning.

The New York Times reports:

Attorney General Jeff Sessions faced growing pressure on Tuesday to remove himself from any role in investigating President Trump’s aides and their relationship with Russia, but advisers to Mr. Sessions said he saw no need to do so.

The resignation of Michael T. Flynn as national security adviser over his conversations with the Russian ambassador gave new impetus to demands from Democrats and outside groups who say Mr. Sessions lacks the independence to oversee criminal investigations that might lead back to the White House. He and Mr. Flynn were both early and influential advisers in Mr. Trump’s presidential campaign.

Senator Chuck Schumer of New York, the Democratic leader, said Tuesday that under the Justice Department’s guidelines on possible conflicts, that personal history should “disqualify” Mr. Sessions from overseeing any investigations.

  • Todd20036

About damned time that the democrats stopped rolling over and playing dead.

    • crewman

I want Trump and as many of those surrounding him as possible on record to Congress or the FBI ASAP so they can deny their knowledge and involvement before details come out showing they had knowledge and were involved. Then they can all be charged with perjury, which is straightforward to prosecute.

    • Chucktech

I wish them well, but my reaction is “Big whoop.” The Dems could come out with the bloody knife plucked from the back of the Constitution, with Trumps bloody fingerprints all over it, but if that pig AG Sessions doesn’t do anything about it, then what?

      • NancyP

Take it to the public, LOUDLY.
If the evidence is easy to understand – the Dems could WALK OUT OF CONGRESS as a group, and present the data on the steps of the Capital. Media have to be advised beforehand to collect at the Capital steps at X time, and there needs to be a “stage manager” to get maximum visual impact. Organization needs to be party-wide.
Is there a quorum rule? Threaten to stay out until an independent prosecutor is appointed.
Keep making comments delegitimizing the Republican Congress’ failure to act.

This would be heard around the world.

        • Kenster999

You mean like they did when the Republican leadership violated the Constitution by not providing advice and consent for Merrick Garland? 😡

    • Duh-David

If this had happened in a Democratic president’s administration, Republicans would be launching impeachment proceedings right now. At the very least, they’d begin a string of hearings and investigations that would run longer than The Price is Right.

But to paraphrase D.J.T. himself, he could shoot someone on Fifth Avenue in broad daylight and the House Oversight Committee would not look into it. They’d probably schedule a few more hearings on Benghazi instead.

  • bkmn

Start by getting every single member in front of TV cameras stating that there are valid concerns about Russian influence on the White House but the GOP is refusing to do its job.

  • Ragnar Lothbrok

Even without this crisis, Sessions as AG was going to be the worst thing for this country. WE need a plan B.

    • William

It’s a little late to abort Sessions.

      • vorpal

        Agree to disagree.

  • olandp

Why would anyone think there is a conflict having a campaign supporter investigating a campaign. I mean it is not like they are investigating Clintons.

    • GayOldLady

He was not only a campaign supporter, he was a very active surrogate. He traveled with trump and introduced him at rallies. In many ways he was trumps Southern equivalent of rudy guiliani

    • UrsusArctos

Worse yet, Sessions brought fleas Steve Miller along with him. Sessions is working overtime to make the South rise again. Between him and Roberts, the Alabama GOP evil is firmly entrenched. The executive needs a de-worming, to stay with the veterinary example.

  • Michael R
  • Pluto Animus

    Bend over, Trump.
The Democrats have a hard caucus ready for you!

    • Ragnar Lothbrok

      We’re such cuckers

    • Silver Badger

The thought of the pissant bending over would make any caucus flaccid.

      • Stephen Elliot Phillips

Id bend over for senator booker

        • Chucktech

Forget him, sweetie. He doesn’t even know you’re alive…

            How dare you.

    Get in his FACE, Democrats!

He’s compromised and MUST recuse himself!

      • GayOldLady
        • Bj Lincoln

Spicer is such a dick. That and why would a grown man admit he chews and swallows 35 pieces of gum a day?!

          • barrixines

I didn’t know that was a real thing – I thought it was just an SNL joke. It must give him terrible flatulence.

          • mpatreyu

Actually I think all of that gum would plug him up. Sure would explain a few things.

          • Stephen Elliot Phillips

Oh god he swallows them. His poo must look like a ben and jerrys pistaschio flavor

    • Todd20036

My only problem with this is Leslie was definitely on our side.

      • GayOldLady

I loved Leslie. I saw him in an old Science Fiction movie on TCM last week, “Forbidden Planet”. He was so young it took me a second to recognize him.

  • Silver Badger

Ya know, the pissant needs to teach us all a lesson and resign. Then we’ll be sorry!

  • William

The last thing the repuglicans want is a special prosecutor. Once appointed, they can investigate anything.

    • billbear1961

It’s time for another major MARCH in D.C. to demand investigations and Trump’s TAX RETURNS!!

      • Sam_Handwich

i’ve read here and there about such a march being planned for April 15

        • billbear1961

I saw that this morning on electoral-vote.com, Sam.

But, in the circumstances, I think there should be one much sooner than that!

We’ve got to apply massive pressure NOW.

    • canoebum

They know only too well. They insisted on Ken Starr, and look where that led. Once appointed, it’s Katie bar the door. The GOP will fight that with everything they have.

  • safari

Let’s see how “Law and Order” works with a compromised chief executive.

  • S1AMER

Questions MUST be asked: What does Sessions know? Is he helping Trump cover up deals with Putin, or anything else?

It would seem that the Law and Order candidate really doesn’t like the Law, or Order.

      “I don’t recall….”

  • marshlc

Seems to me that now is the time for all progressives living in Republican districts, and with Republican senators, to really turn on the heat. Don’t come on as a flaming liberal, but as a very concerned citizen living in their district. Many of them don’t give a shit about public pressure, but some will. Loud and sustained public outrage can make things happen.

    • Dazzer

Come at it from the basis of “I’m a proud and patriotic American. Just two months ago I knew where we stood in America. If Russia wasn’t our declared enemy, it certainly wasn’t our friends. Now we have Russian spies in the White House and Russian planes harrassing our our Navy and Russian missiles being fired near us – and the Government is doing squat. I’m a proud American. Are you?”

  • Rex

Democratic leaders need to demonstrate the same amount of anger regarding Trump’s Russian involvement as Trump did over Nordstroms.

  • Rex

Come on Chuck, if there was ever a time to be a Bad Hombre, it’s now.

I’d like to think that “what’s about to happen” is single digit approval ratings for the President.

      • Joe in PA

And I’d like to think that the president is going to jail.

  • Halou

Putin personally headed the investigation into the murder of Boris Nemtsov literally within sight of the Kremlin’s iconic walls, and wouldn’t you know it the investigation found that Putin had nothing whatsoever to do with the murder. Shocking!

Sessions investigation into Flynn will probably find that neither Flynn nor anyone else in the White House had nothing to do with what happened.

    • vorpal

This is like how my husband headed the investigation into who ate my leftover pizza, and firmly concluded that it wasn’t him.

I’m pretty sure the cats are innocent as I have yet to see them open the fridge.
      The mystery goes unsolved.

      • Rillion

Cats are too smart to let you see them open the fridge.

    • vorpal

      Breaking news:
New evidence has JUST come to light from an undisclosed whistlemeower.
Maybe the hubby is innocent after all.
(Well, innocent at least where pizza theft is concerned.)

  • Raising_Rlyeh

Serious question: if Trump is proven to have colluded with the Russians, and in my view there is no doubt, then what does that mean for the results of the federal election? Technically Pence would become President if Trump is removed, but in my view committing treason would mean that the VP is not legitimate nor are any of his appointments.

    • safari

There is no provision for a do-over.

      • Raising_Rlyeh

I get that, but this would bring up serious questions about the constitutionality of a President Pence when he is only VP because of treason.

        • safari

I imagine unless he’s committed a crime, it won’t matter to enough to change the constitution to alter it. I might be wrong, though. Maybe enough will be pissed to change it.

        • Halou

There used to be a time when the VP was the runner-up in the party nomination process. So if the President himself is compromised by a foreign government like this and had to be removed he would be replaced by the person who wasn’t compromised.

Edit: Maybe such a policy would have got more of the Bernie bus behind Hillary Clinton, enough for America to have won it’s own damned election.

        • Mike C

Pence was selected for Trump by the GOP (from a pile of stuff) because this has always been the plan from the beginning. I don’t expect Trump to serve a full term.

    • Natty Enquirer

You can throw the word “treason” around any way you like, but it is precisely defined in the U.S. Constitution. No one has committed federal treason colluding with Russia because Russia is not a declared enemy. Other crimes may apply, however.

      • BobSF_94117

You don’t think collusion constitutes conducting foreign policy?

  • JT
  • vernacular100
  • Jimmy R

Oh mercy me, a special caucus meeting. How radical. What exactly will that accomplish?

Need I remind dems yet again: you’re dealing with thugs and gangsters and motherfuckers. Don’t play nice. It’s pointless.

  • Sam_Handwich

schumer is on the senate floor talking about this now

  • GayOldLady

Someone is going to break ranks soon and go to the FBI to save their own skin. With the sort of media exposure we have today, it won’t be long.

    • safari

Hopefully Pence, triggering Amendment 25, section 4.

      • Ray Taylor

Conservatives should be happy about the way things are proceeding. In the end they’ll get their theocrat and weaken the power of the executive.

    • PeteLI

I think their party will be very damaged by this.

  • Gay Fordham Prep Grad

Every confidence the Democrats are going to blow this golden opportunity to neuter or destroy Trump

  • Jmdintpa

oh my…. im sure the democrats pointing out the obvious will really change the republicans minds… the idiots will get run over again and again and again. they dont understand yet that this is war. the playing nice bullshit is just that bullshit. throw out all rules, throw out all decorum, or lose everything.

    • Natty Enquirer

Throw out all the rules to get those guys who broke the rules? That’s rich.

      • Jmdintpa

exactly…. fight fire with fire… these republicans understand nothing else. obama tried to play nice and was disrespected everytime. yet the man still played nice and by the rules. that doesnt work anymore.

        • Kelly Lape

When you discard the law to protect the law you are playing god. Our laws either have meaning or they don’t. I’m glad my party respects the Constitution and the law.

          • Earl

Grumble grumble, I’d still rather start with killing all the lawyers.

/s Sentiment from a Shakespeare play. 🙂 Can’t remember which one off hand.

          • Kelly Lape

I’m all for lawyers. I am however supportive of legislative reform to prevent lawyers, doctors, and pharmaceutical manufacturers from advertising. We as a society determined that Big Tobacco was detrimental to our society and outlawed cigarette ads, we must as a society limit Quacks and Shysters in the same manner (big Pharma qualifies as both).

          • Earl

Lawyers are like locusts, sometimes useful. 🙂

          • -M-

Those were the words of a wannabe tyrant in Henry VI.

          • Earl

That’s it. Thanks. 🙂 Although I thought the scene was about a trio of beggars who… Oh, yah. 😀

  • edrex

Serious question: Given the un-American Republican control of congress, what options do Democrats and others who care about our country have? How might they apply pressure effectively?

    • Kelly Lape

Public release of information such as is happening now. I look forward to every Republican event attended by masses of people shouting “Do your job” – as the public is continued to be ignored it will only get worse (for them).

      • Johnny Wyeknot

I hear it pays well. :-/

    • GayOldLady

Huge crowds gathered around the WH and the Capitol building. That would bring some sense of urgency to the situation.

      • Cucker “Dick” Tarlson

        It worked in Romania.

    • Earl

Don’t forget the people’s nuclear option; the general strike.

Properly done, it’ll scare the fucking shit out of the PTB.

  • Kelly Lape

Obama’s tendency to “play the long game” is well known. It is becoming obvious that intelligence agencies have been monitoring the Trump Gang of Traitors all along. It also appears obvious that Obama left in place an investigation that would not be compromised by the Trump traitors when they took office.

As the Trump White House has proclaimed their innocence, these agents have released compromising information incrementally, allowing the Traitors more rope on their noose. Now Republican Congress Thugs are putting their own necks into that noose.

    Pass the popcorn please.

  • Ross

The BIG question for me is:

WHY IS NOBODY CHECKING TO SEE IF THE PAPERLESS VOTING MACHINES WERE HACKED BY RUSSIA/BANNON?

Trumpy endlessly rants about voter fraud.

This is smoke/mirrors. There is NO voter fraud, but this obscures the real issue: hacked machines.

    • HZ81

Right? I keep hearing pundits and GOP trolls saying “this won’t change the results of the election.” Well, we won’t know until that’s investigated properly, too.

    • Sam_Handwich
    • bobbyjoe

You’d think that under the circumstances the Democrats would have been screaming for this every second of every day until the press was talking about nothing else. The Republicans sure would. But, no.

There’s a very real possibility that Russia’s hacking may have been worse than what’s been reported so far (does anyone even remember that the NY Times, the Washington Post, and others confirmed back in August that Russians hacked the voter rolls in Illinois and Arizona and according to the Chicago Tribune tried to get into the systems of at least 18 other states? What the hell do they think they were doing that for, looking for cute baby names or something? Jeez Louise, can we please have somebody actually bother to connect the most obvious dots?)

    • Cucker “Dick” Tarlson

Give it time. Once the guillotine is set up, they’ll start rounding up the others.

      • Johnny Wyeknot

I think I will take up knitting.

        • Cucker “Dick” Tarlson

It’s all the rage these days.

          • Johnny Wyeknot

And I hear titanium knitting needles come in handy in large Republican crowds.

    • -M-

The vote counting was more likely rigged by the Republicans.

  • HZ81

If Hillary was (rightfully) President and it came to light her aides were in talks with the UK to get a hold of new episodes of Sherlock, the GOP would have burned the White House to the ground by now.

With Russia interfering with our election via collusion with the GOP candidate? They sound like Foghorn Leghorn defending this treason. “Well, I say, well, I say, I do declare…”

They’re traitors. Traitors. Stop fucking calling them by any other names, Democrats.

    • bobbyjoe

Try them all for treason. And then administer the appropriate historical penalty for treason– in the public square– so it never happens again.

      • Earl

You want them hanged by the neck until they’re near death, then cut down, disemboweled, beheaded and quartered?

Our ancestors did that because they were fucking brutal little bastards. You don’t want to do that, not really. 🙂

  • OK so now the Dems like whistle-blowers who leaked this information? Am I getting this right?

    • Friday

More like you think Republicans should go on cheating and abusing power and the Democrats are supposed to ignore it after all you’ve been doing all this time?

      • So OK it’s OK to spy on republicans because they’re bad but not democrats because they’re good? Just want to make sure I get this amazing logic.

        • Friday

Straw man. Whistleblowing isn’t *spying* like what the Russians did and the Republicans *used* when a White House isn’t *supposed* to be that secretive about this stuff in the first place, never mind more open to the Russian government than the merican people about what’s even going on and being done in their name.

          • Yes that makes TOTAL sense. *pats head*

          • Friday

As usual all you’ve got. An actual corrupt administration having some people feeling the need to speak up is different from actual theft and espionage to try and fabricate bullshit propaganda and suppress votes.

          • Which administration is corrupt? Just Trump’s? If you believe that you are pretty naive.

          • Friday

Why do you cons think accusing someone else of what you do somehow makes it OK?

          • Why am I a con? I’m not – I’m very much on the left.

          • Friday

I don’t believe you, you may have forgotten that part.

          • It is possible to be on the left and not be happy with the democrats! Imagine that!

          • Friday

You seem to ask that a lot regardless of circumstances.

          • Ask what? That wasn’t a question!

  • Can the Dem’s do anything on their own, like call for a special investigator or the like, or wouldn’t they need some GOP’ers to join them?

    • Cucker “Dick” Tarlson

      They will.

But by setting the stage, it’s now much easier for others to start defecting.

If you’ve listened to GOPers defense of 45 and the rest of the regime in the last 48 hours, their support is sounding desperate and wavering. I think that a lot of them see where this is going, and that with the hellfire the intelligence agencies are about to release, they realize that it’s only going to get worse. The people are furious, the media has turned hard against them.

      They’re fucked.
