REPORT: Trump Campaign Aides Had Multiple Contacts With Russian Spies Over The Year Before Election

The New York Times reports:

Phone records and intercepted calls show that members of Donald J. Trump’s 2016 presidential campaign and other Trump associates had repeated contacts with senior Russian intelligence officials in the year before the election, according to four current and former American officials.

American law enforcement and intelligence agencies intercepted the communications around the same time they were discovering evidence that Russia was trying to disrupt the presidential election by hacking into the Democratic National Committee, three of the officials said. The intelligence agencies then sought to learn whether the Trump campaign was colluding with the Russians on the hacking or other efforts to influence the election.

The officials interviewed in recent weeks said that, so far, they had seen no evidence of such cooperation.

But the intercepts alarmed American intelligence and law enforcement agencies, in part because of the amount of contact that was occurring while Mr. Trump was speaking glowingly about the Russian president, Vladimir V. Putin. At one point last summer, Mr. Trump said at a campaign event that he hoped Russian intelligence services had stolen Hillary Clinton’s emails and would make them public.

The officials said that one of the advisers picked up on the calls was Paul Manafort, who was Mr. Trump’s campaign chairman for several months last year and had worked as a political consultant in Ukraine. The officials declined to identify the other Trump associates on the calls.

  • Exatron

Lock them all up and hand the presidency over to someone else. In a perfect world, that would be Clinton, but that’s probably not an option in the current climate.

    • Jeffg166

It is hard to see where this is going. Trump is Putin’s puppet. Pence is Putin’s mole. Ryan is the Koch brother’s butt boy. We are so screwed one way or the other.

      • David Walker

        Don’t forget Blotto Bannon.

        • Jeffg166

I think he’ll be history when Trump falls. He may be history before as they are going to have to have more heads roll to protect Donald. He’ll throw anyone under the bus.

          • Bj Lincoln

            I hope you are right.

          • Todd20036

Bannon is the “man” behind the cumquat, but since he was never elected, he is not in any place to be able to stay unless someone else wants him

          • Matt G, Rochester

Or he has the goods on whoever takes over. We know the Russians were trying to hack the RNC, what says they didn’t succeed? Just ’cause Rancid says they didn’t?

          • DonnaLee

I think he won’t be able to keep his mouth shut once he isn’t sitting in on everything in the White House. I can see him talking to ‘friends’ (aka drinking buddies), and saying State secrets, which will get him in serious shit.

    • GayOldLady

The line of succession is Pence, then Ryan, then McConnell. Every alternative sucks, but honestly, anyone would be better than trump, he’s an incompetent fool and will take our country into the dust if he isn’t impeached.

      • HomerTh
        • GayOldLady

      • bzrd

The line of succession is not like the British monarchy. If the president dies or is out for his crimes then pence is president and nominates a VP. If both the prez and VP are gone at the same time then ryan is prez. Agnew resigned for crimes under Nixon and he nominated Ford for VP who then became prez when Nixon resigned.

        • GayOldLady

Yeah. I remember that well and then Ford Pardoned Nixon when Nixon resigned. The difference I see here is that trump conspired with the Russians to win the election, which from my point of view should make the election invalid. I think a lot of other people will see it the same way. The entire electoral process was compromised and corrupted by trump. I think we’re likely headed for a Constitutional crisis and a revolution of some sort. If the trump supporters feel aggrieved when he’s taken down that could lead to some sort of civil revolt. I’m not to optimistic about the outcome.

  • And Dear Leader denounces this as “fake news” in 3…2…1…

      • billbear1961

If it’s FAKE news, why did you force Flynn’s resignation, BIG SHOT?!

        • David Walker

Optics. It just didn’t look good for a liar to tolerate a liar who got caught lying. Wheels within wheels, or something like that. Anyway, hope your Wednesday goes well, Mr. Bear, Sir.

        • GayOldLady

Whoops……trump fired Flynn over fake news?

          • billbear1961

            Heads will roll!

      • billbear1961

Show us your TAX RETURNS, you cowardly TRAITOR!!

        • Oh’behr

Exactly. It should be mandatory in the future for any and all USA POTUS candidates (and meddling foreign interests too). (Though we know the Russians and others won’t really reveal their interests in any of our candidates).

      • Bj Lincoln

My folks used to watch FOX news for everything. I finally got her to start watching other stations, I didn’t care who, She has paid more attention to what is going on but it didn’t stop her from voting for Drumpf. We can NOT talk politics so I haven’t heard what she thinks about all the lies and now this. All I got was ‘Wait and see’ and “Give him a chance”. She does read the stuff I post to my FB.

        • billbear1961

Ask her why he’s so afraid to reveal his tax returns!

And why he forced Flynn to resign if there’s nothing to the Russian allegations!

          • Bj Lincoln

All I will get is dead air or a dead stare. Same thing I get when I talk about any of my medical needs because I am on Obamacare. I could not talk about healthcare before because “Healthcare is a privilege, not a right and it’s my own fault I can’t afford it.” I was hoping they would disown me for signing up for Obamacare!

          • GayOldLady

Girl, I’ve already put all of those people o-u-t of my life. I don’t know how you’ve kept your composure when people around you treat you like it’s your fault that you need assistance with healthcare. And healthcare is a right and nothing they say or do changes that. How do they feel about you being gay?

          • Christopher

I formally disowned my entire family over their support for Cheetolini. (I more or less just stopped talking to them years ago because they’re an embarrassment to humanity.)

Their response: “Everyone can have their own opinions.”

My response: “I want nothing to do with ANYONE who supports a Fascist.”

            Best decision I’ve ever made.

          • GayOldLady

            Good for you!

          • billbear1961

Dead air or a dead stare is as good as an admission that one is in the wrong and doesn’t care about being in the wrong.

MANY people cannot afford private insurance through no fault of their own. Christ–it’s EXPENSIVE!!

And even people who CAN afford it or who get it through work could lose it easily if they cost the insurance company too much money.

I have no tolerance for RUTHLESS or willfully IGNORANT jackasses.

If THEY needed help, of course, THEY would be deserving cases.

Such selfish, deliberately obtuse bastards are EVIL.

Fuck them–sooner or later they’ll get what they have coming for putting these FASCISTS in charge!

It’s just too bad so many INNOCENT people who tried to stop this will suffer, too!!

        • Oh’behr

I applaud that you got your Mom to at least be open enough to watch other stations. Maybe she won’t believe everything is a lie as the Trump 45 POTUS’ empire collapses now.

      • CanuckDon

That tweet is indicative of his typical elusive ways but with things falling down around him like they are, it demonstrates a delirious mind still feigning innocence.

        • David Walker

And delirious not in a good way.

how is donny calling, on national tv for putin to hack Hillary’s email not seen as collusion?

    • David Walker

It was sarcasm. He’s the best satirist. People are…oh, nevermind.

    • Bj Lincoln

I think that is a great question.

    • Bluto

      Just locker room talk.

    • gwhiz007

I’ve been saying this for a while, he basically ordered a hacking the way one orders take out. It’s telling if anything.

  • TSS

How is this news? We knew this before the election.

    • David Walker

It’s news because it’s verifiable by several sources. Yes, reports were circulating, but it’s finally being nailed down and exposed. Fake news, rumor, speculation need no time at all to be circulated. The true stuff takes time.

      • TSS

This is based on stuff like phone records. Phone records??? It took our intelligence organizations this long to analyze phone records? So, yeah, I feel vindicated but not too confident in the intelligence community.

        • Bj Lincoln

They take their time making sure they have all the info before they say anything. Comey doesn’t count.

    Poor Poor Donald

October 10, 2016: During the second presidential debate, Trump questions whether any hacking had occurred, saying “maybe there is no hacking”. He adds: “They always blame Russia, and the reason they blame Russia is because they think they are trying to tarnish me with Russia.”

  • GayOldLady

trump and his minions conspired with Russia to take out Hillary. I watched his rallies where he questioned the usefulness of NATO and praised Putin. I watched the press conference where he asked Russia to hack Hillary Clinton. It was obvious lasts Fall that tRump was conspiring with Russia. Trump’s ties with Russia were the source of speculation much earlier than last fall. In July, I was exchanging emails and links with my brother regarding Trump’s connections to Russia.

Here is just one of them:

  • Michael R

His taxes will reveal how much Trump owes Russia , what they pay him .
Yesterday the House Ways and Means Committee rejected a Democratic push to ask for President Trump’s tax returns.

    • Bj Lincoln

Not surprised. The many members of Congress are in on this plus they don’t want anything else to get in their way of Drumpf signing our country to the poor house first.

      • Oh’behr

        Yup, they have to make

This falls under the category ” anyone who criticizes Mommy is bad ”

” We love America just as much as they do. But in a different way. You see, they love America like a 4-year-old loves his mommy. Liberals love America like grown-ups. To a 4-year-old, everything Mommy does is wonderful and anyone who criticizes Mommy is bad. Grown-up love means actually understanding what you love, taking the good with the bad and helping your loved one grow. Love takes attention and work and is the best thing in the world.

That’s why we liberals want America to do the right thing. We know America is the hope of the world, and we love it and want it to do well. ”

    • 2patricius2

It’s like walking into a cell full of rats. Turn the light on one, and you see the rest. If they shine the light on Flynn, or Trump, or anyone else, the light will show the whole lot of them were in on the collusion.

      • David Walker

And it scares the fuck out of them.

    • gwhiz007

Yeah, I think its safe to say that if a scintilla of this had happened under President Obama there would be so much decisive action that we’d all have whiplash. Now we have a plot from the Manchurian Candidate and nary a patriotic Republican to save the republic can be found.

If anything, more evidence that they care more about personal power than they do about the People.

  • Boy Elvis

Anyone here surprised? No? Didn’t think so. Those of us who don’t have our heads up our asses have known for a long time now that Trump and his cronies have Russia balls deep in their backsides.

  • billbear1961

Despite the uncertainties, the reports [of regular contact between Russian intelligence and Trump campaign aides] are threatening to the Trump administration on a number of levels.

    (1) They flatly contradict White House spokesman, Sean Spicer, who on Tuesday repeated his earlier assertions that there had been no pre-election contacts between the Trump team and Russian officials. Last month, Trump himself also denied any such contacts.

    (2) They pile further pressure on the Republican congressional leadership to launch committee hearings on Russian election interference that were promised, but have so far failed to materialise.

    (3) They are a further sign that intelligence officials are willing to leak extensively against the Trump administration, making it extremely risky for the White House to try to shut down investigations into collusion with Moscow that are reportedly being carried out by several intelligence agencies.

    (4) They add circumstantial weight to the reports on the Trump campaign’s Kremlin links compiled last year and passed to the FBI by a former MI6 officer, Christopher Steele. His reports alleged active, sustained and covert collusion to subvert the election which, if confirmed, could constitute treason.

  • Yalma Cuder-Zicci

The official Republican talking point on this will be: How DARE the US intelligence agents spy on US citizens as they communicate with Russian spies!!! This is just outrageous!! Whatever happened to freedom of speech?!!!

If Trump & Pence end up with charges (treason?) and the election declared invalid, rather than Ryan becoming Prez, according the the chain of succession, is there a chance the election can declared invalid and a new election take place?

    • Jeffg166

We are in uncharted waters now. The founding fathers thought the electoral college would stop this sort of thing not create it.

      • Bj Lincoln

The electoral college was bribed. It is the ONLY way they voted for Drumpf otherwise. 500+ people could NOT have thought Drumpf would make a better leader.

        • Oh’behr

Bribed might also mean blackmailed, coerced or threatened, etc.

        • -M-

The founding fathers expected the electors to be respected people elected by their communities, not partisans appointed by political parties to rubber stamp their nominee.

        • McSwagg

Each party names its own slate of electors. Whichever party wins, those electors are installed. So the are beholden to the party that installed them. This isn’t how the Founders envisioned the Electoral College working. Basically, both parties have “captured” the process and defanged the snake, neutering the EC in the process.

    • David Walker

Oooooh. Constitutional crisis time! Or is it civil war time? I wish the answer was yes, but with the houses of congress being filled with honorable banana republicans and SCOTUS about to be equally inclined, I doubt that sanity will prevail. I mean, really, what are the chances?

      • Jeffg166

Not good. Who would benefit the most from a civil war here? The Russians no doubt.

        • David Walker

No doubt. However, how far ahead do congress critters look? Not very. How many congress critters do what they’re told? As someone wrote yesterday, “Only geese should goose step.”

          • Jeffg166

The pressure is mounting from the resistance. As their offices get flood with calls and emails denouncing trump they will have to pay attention whether they want to or not. Hearing from the folks at home, especially the unhappy ones, gets their attention. Yes, they want to screw us all but their survival in 2018 is now in question.

      • Skokieguy [Larry]

That is the point my dear friend, Rachel Maddow made last night. If you don’t have enforcement, laws becoming meaningless. Jeff Sessions was part of the campaign and the campaign appears to have conspired with the Russians. Sessions has already said he won’t recuse himself from any investigations.

I really feel like we need the UN to step in and oversee US elections.

        • David Walker

Absolutely. I’ll watch Rachel in a little bit. But this is also where Olbermann is going. I’ll have to some research on the congressional make-up in the days Nixon. Off hand, I don’t remember if it was a Democratic house that created the hearings. Whichever it was, however, showed a lot of courage. We need to see that again or resign ourselves to being just a swath of real estate.

          • Earl

Democratic House, can’t rememeber the composition of the Senate, but at the end Nixon did know that his own party wouldn’t support him.

That’s the main problem here, Trump’s party is still supporting him. In spite of the apparent treason.

          • David Walker

Right. Thank you, Earl. And he lied right up to the end.

          • Earl

That’s because, “When the President does it, that means it’s not illegal!”

I still think he was a better man than Trump, or Dubya. 🙂 And I fully agree with everything Hunter S. ever said about Nixon.

          • Oh’behr

I don’t remember what Hunter S said about Nixon, yet I’d take Nixon over Dubya or Trump. At least he gave us the EPA and was considering National Health Care (because of the Democrats and what then were real Republicans). Otherwise, Nixon was a paranoid disaster and Watergate and more with dossiers on his enemies and more stuff I don’t remember easily now.

          • Earl

Oh, man. Google them. It’s awesome to read his take on Nixon. 🙂

Double check the sources though. Some of what you’ll find isn’t actually what he wrote.

          • Earl

Nixon was scum. If he had ruled with today’s powers, it would have been worse than a Trump administration. Nixon was somewhat competent, after all.

          • GayOldLady

I remember a Select Committee was appointed and Sam Ervin Dem and Howard Baker, Republican from TN were chairs of that committee.

          • David Walker

And it was Baker who pretty much laid down the ground rule of finding out “what did the president know and when did he know it?”. Any Republican have the guts to ask that of 45?

          • GayOldLady

Nope……None of them have the guts, yet! They want desperately to get some of their legislation signed before they are forced to impeach him. Once the impeachment takes place Pence will be the equivalent of a lame duck. Any confidence that trump voters had in the GOP will vanish and having the numbers in both houses will be useless because not only will Dem voters hate the GOP, a lot of republican voters will too. They’re in quicksand and there’s no way out.

          • William

We don’t have Barbara Jordan in the current Congress.

          • McSwagg

Sheila Jackson Lee holds that seat. Girl needs to step up to the legacy of Sister Barbara.

          • TrollopeReader

Yes, the House was D (and I think the Senate was too) … Sam Ervin was the lead senator with Howard Baker (R) as the ranking member. On the House side, it was young Bill Cohen (R- Maine) who was one of the first to break ranks — he later was senator, and then SecDef.

    • Talisman

      Unfortunately, no.

The Constitution stipulates that the VP can succeed the President, but beyond that, it is silent. The order of succession is set by Congress.

Anyway, do you really want someone from this Cabinet to become President?

  • JustDucky

So can we talk about the fact that the FBI sat on this?

Comey outright made shit up about Hillary’s emails mere days before the election, but the FBI sat on this.

    • Bj Lincoln

Comey is a pawn who’s job it was to make Hillary look bad. The FBI is not in on this and needed enough provable evidence before saying anything.

      • JustDucky

Comey is the Director of the FBI. They sat on this because he told them to sit on this. And despite the fact that “provable evidence” was unnecessary for the Comey’s allegations against Hillary, not one FBI agent with access to information about the Trump campaign’s sedition went to the press with that information. Not one.

        • Bj Lincoln

We must count on the people under the crooked heads of departments and that is what I think happened. After Comey opened he mouth, the rest knew he was not to be trusted and they started leaking info to bring this to light.

        • Acronym Jim

Since it appears that Comey was pressured by a possible leak from rogue agents in the NYC office working on the Wiener file, Giuliani needs to be investigated as well.

    • Bj Lincoln

Wow hon. It does look as if we will never get out from under the GOP unless people get out and vote in 2018.

        • Bj Lincoln

It is! With any luck a few of those will go down with Drumpf or because they can’t handle the job.

          • DonnaLee

I think you’re giving them too much credit, I see a few not making it till then.

    • TuuxKabin

      Almost vomited? I’m hurling.

    • M Jackson

The upside to a John F. Kelly presidency? It would mean that we were rid of the other 12.

  • GayOldLady

Our Government is beginning to look like an Episode of “The Last Ship”.

    • William

None of them compare to Eric Dane.

      • GayOldLady

He’s a handsome man and I wish we had him in the line of succession, even if he is an actor.

  • William

Manafort has one of the worst ‘space alien wearing a human skin’ diquises around. His natural head shape must be extremely trapezoidal.

    • TrollopeReader

      “natural” ? 🙂

  • Piernudo15

I remember when I first saw Manafort on TV, I thought “that guy looks like a mafioso right out of central casting.”

  • Superman

Just because Russia supported Trump in his campaign doesn’t mean Russia is Trump’s friend now that he’s President. Trump and the State Dept and the intelligence community need to get on the same page, and quickly. ” Loose lips sink ships” won’t work as a public mantra today because of the fun sexual connotations, but the history of the saying and its importance today couldn’t be more relevant. Soon there will be military conflict between the United States and one of several likely candidates and we have to be prepared to tighten up our security across all fronts. Trump and his administration have let it get out of hand. But so has our free press, tolerating this fake news nonsense. Their profession is spinning out of control.

  • safari

We knew this. Maybe not the details of the calls but it was an open “secret” that was reported on. I’m not understanding how this is new.

  • Acronym Jim

“The officials declined to identify the other Trump associates on the calls.”

I think it’s a pretty safe assumption that one of them was Mikhail Flynn.

  • The_Wretched

Right, so why wasn’t it circulated more widely and if it ws, why didn’t someone make sure the partys got the information out?

  • Can someone explain to me why this shit is coming out now?! If all this was going on then Obama must’ve known about it, right?

    • JWC

I would assume they wanted solid evidence before making a move I think thta was why Obama was grinning as he left

  • Oh’behr

Trump HAS to release his tax returns. As should his associates. It’s beginning to look like treason.

  • Marti386

Ooooooooooooooooooh, this is getting gooooooooooooooooooooood. I’m breaking out the popcorn and Snuggies.

  • Mark

Fuck the NSA and the FBI. Both admit this was occurring a full year before the election – and all they did was listen in on the party line? Give me a fucking break! And why wasn’t the content of those snooped calls made public? Putin and pals has got this regime by the short hairs – and still, our intel agencies sit back and play party politics. Fuck them. Fuck all of them.

  • gwhiz007

So, this could conceivably take down a few people in his cabinet all at once, depending on who gave the order for Flynn to be in “constant contact” , who else knew and when it began.

It’s strange that it took this long for this story to get traction though. I’ve heard details of this a week or two before the election…
