TRAILER: Feud: Bette And Joan

The A.V. Club sets up the clip:

In the full trailer for Ryan Murphy’s latest anthology series, Feud: Bette And Joan, Olivia de Havilland (Catherine Zeta-Jones) calmly explains: “Feuds are never about hate. Feuds are about pain.” That sounds like it could be thesis of the show, which in its first season aims to chart the battle between What Ever Happened To Baby Jane? stars Bette Davis (Susan Sarandon) and Joan Crawford (Jessica Lange). This look at the project introduces viewers to the egos involved, and how they were manipulated by the likes of director Robert Aldrich (Alfred Molina) and Warner Bros.’s Jack Warner (Stanley Tucci).

    Lange – Yes
    Sarandon – No

    • crewman

Feuds are about pain: here’s a pain for you. I don’t forgive Sarandon for the part she played in bringing us Trump.

      • Michael R

We have to repay her for her consideration somehow .

        • Stephen Elliot Phillips

Yes by not watching her performances

        • boatboy_srq

Yes but Punishing Lange, Molina, Zeta-Jones and Tucci shouldn’t be required in the process. Especially Zeta-Jones: she married Michael Douglas, which should be penance enough.

And what about the punishment inflicted on audiences by casting Zeta-Jones, never Eleonora Duse on her best day, as Olivia de Havilland? WTF???

          • boatboy_srq

Who else in US cinema has the chops to take on the role? Scarlett Johanssen? Too brash. Jennifer Lawrence? Too tall. Allyson Hannigan? Too plain. Emma Watson? Too young. Kate Beckinsale? She’d make a better Norma Shearer.

          • jsmukg

Who said anything about it being an amurrikkkan ‘actress?’ LOL. None of the above, and then some.

          • EdmondWherever

OOH, Tucci? I was kind of “meh” about this anyway, but for Tucci, I’m in.

          • AJ Drew

Ouch! Next party, you are invited. Ha!

      • Joe in PA

I hear you. I’ve removed any Sarandon movies from my Netflix queue. Damn that sounds lame. But it is what I can do.

      • Me either. I’m not boycotting so much as saving my sanity. I can’t look at her without seeing the part she played in destroying our country.

        • Stephen Elliot Phillips

I think sarandon, like many on the left, were very sure clinton was gonna win. So they were acting the part of nay sayers. Attempting to move the dnc farther left.
Well in fact, she and the lot, actually caused us to lose.
The time to be a purist was not this election.

          • There was a lot of denial from a lot of people about this election. I remember multiple times people laughing at the idea that Trump could even get the nomination. And then things kept happening. The part that surprised me was that white suburban women voted for Trump. They voted for the guy who you’d think would remind them of every sleazy boss they ever had who thought he could grab their ass in the office and get away with it. And they voted for him. I didn’t see that coming. Lesson learned. Women are as stupid as men.

          • Stephen Elliot Phillips

Ive got this ongoing hypothesis running in my head that women in this country have been fed so much BS about sexiness, and subordinaton that theyve become their worst enemies. I think a lot of US females are turned off by a female in charge. Women should run a fashion line or be actresses or marry wealthy. For a female to aspire to be the president is somehow sacreligious to their sex because its not their predestined role.

          • BeaverTales

The cheating and vote rigging by the DNC and Hillary’s refusal to condemn it played a huge role in alienating the Left as well.

          • Stephen Elliot Phillips

Ok donald. Give me facts that there was cheating and vote rigging.

          • BeaverTales
          • Stephen Elliot Phillips

So? What if i told u Im not a hillary clinton fanatic. Would that change ur mind about me?
The facts are still the same. We were ALL, every liberal, dealt the same hand. You either voted the democrat and a reprieve for a while. Or you chose someone else. If you chose the latter, you voted trump.
You cannot blame the messenger in a time of crisis. I guess like i said there were a lot of folks that didnt think this election was that serious. And they could protest vote or sit it out. Well, we were all dealt the same hand. Sorry.
So when u show me articles about how “horrible” hillary, Inc. Was to pooor pooor bernie. Its like looking back at the fall of the weimar republic. Silly fretting over spilt milk. Thats ancient history.

          • BeaverTales

You asked for proof that Hillary cheated and I gave it. It wasn’t difficult. If you want to live in denial that’s your problem. But I will not be told that only Hillary supporters can whine about why Hillary lost and that the truth “is ancient history” whenever a Bernie supporter points out the obvious..

Fuck all the arrogance and revisionist/denialist bullshit from Team Hillary. Hillary snatched Defeat from the jaws of Victory her own self. She outspent Trump 1.2 billion to 300 million and Bernie even campaigned for her. Many of Bernie’s supporters campaigned for her as well. The DNC gave her everything she wanted and we have nothing to show for it.

We lost all 3 branches of government thanks to her. .

          • Stephen Elliot Phillips

Why is it hillary clintons fault that she lost? So i suppose you are saying that if bernard sanders had been the nominee he would have beaten donald trump?
No he would not have. Sanders was sorely lacking in minority support. And the blacks and latinos wouldve sat home way more than they did with clinton. Sorry to burst the fantasy but sanders would have lost in a landslide. And as i said this is irrelevant. We were dealt the hand of clinton vs trump. You either gave the entire govt to the nazis or you voted to give this country a little bit more time. End of story

          • BeaverTales

When I was an American expat who lived in Montreal, I often took the side of the Bloc Quebecois in coffeehouse debates. I was black and I understood why the French were pissed off at the English. Quebec was the first place I’ve ever lived where white people genuinely treated me like an equal. I sided with my fellow Anglophones in the open, but I secretly wanted Quebec to win, and I was gonna move there if it did and help it survive….I always related better to society’s underdog.

Hillary represents a different demographic than underdogs.

To understand the level of anger some Berniecrats have toward Hillary, I relate the anger of English Canadians toward Canada who got off their high horses, learned French, dealt with bitter cold, and Saved Canada by living in Quebec and making Montreal . Their lazy brethren in the rest of Canada just sat on their big fat asses and pretended it wasn’t happening until just a week before the election. They told each other a bunch of stupid, obvious lies about the strength of separatism in Quebec.

Hillary’s people made the same fucking mistakes Jean Chretien did. Completely bungle everything,…. Hillary wasn’t lucky enough to be saved by a multitude of liberals with spines who were willing to be honest about the situation like Chretien was. I blame the special snowflakes driving up housing prices in NY, CA and IL who won’t stay and fight on hostile territory for their country’s soul.

Fuck those cowards. Fuck them all. I moved to a red state even though I’m gay and black and I still voted for Hillary… what did the Hillbots do for Hillary in Michigan, Florida, Pennsylvania, Ohio, Indiana or Wisconsin? Did they send in 10 bucks? No they tried to figure out ways to blame a Hillary loss on Bernie. Not a fan.

Jesus I hate cowards and lazy people. Expecting Bernie’s people to fix Hillary’s campaign where she most needed help was typical “Hillary think”. Throw enough money at people who cant stand you and they magically disappear, or become allies.

            https://uploads.disquscdn.com/images/cf12daa02b31f17d50c1af736c33d334019c9debc2aea0b18f1fbd5c8ed545c2.png

Only because of the patriotism of a few thousand English Canadians who moved to Montreal despite discriminatory language laws against them, Canadians still have a united country. Quebec voted “Non” by about 0.5%. By the same margin we lost in multiple states like Wisconsin, where Democrats have been fighting like hell for attention from anyone who will listen.

Were there any rich Hillary supporters in NY or CA ever willing to be inconvenienced and move to states like mine??? No!!!!they just ignored and insulted us Red State Dems because we liked the fact that Bernie actually listened to us, and they they made us pay for it by starving us of funds at the state level. DWS turned Dean’s 50 state strategy to a 20 state one. Hillary rewarded her for it by letting her run her campaign.

            Pure idiocy.

When Berniecrats asked for Hillary’s help to elect Hillary, what kind of help do you think she gave us financially compared to what was needed? How many times did she campaign in the Blue states she lost to Bernie? It was far less than Trump spent, even with an election purse 25% the size of hers.

Hillary had $1.2B, and she mainly spent it on partying with her rich friends everywhere but where her money was most needed.

So yes, I do blame Hillary for losing. Personally. She is not as smart as you think she is….after multiple delusional polls put out by her own lying and arrogant people, she just stopped listening to anyone but her yes men.

I hate politics, I’m done. nobody actually cares.

          • Mark McGovern

Interesting discourse. I know a lot of people don’t like discussing the aftermath, but is is necessary to analyze objectively what happened so the mistakes are not repeated. A lot of Hilary supporters are still smarting, as are Bernie supporters for that matter, but that doesn’t mean they should be given a free pass. We are all in this together, and other elections will arrive before we know it. We need to be analytical about the future, and stop taking criticism of our candidates personally. I was in a discussion here yesterday whereby I was told I was basically an idiot for suggesting Bernie could have won, yet every poll I could find suggested he was competitive against Trump. Other people are like “I’m done talking about it” . While I can appreciate their fatigue, what does being “done ” with it mean? Suppressing opinion and thereby learning nothing? It was all for nothing? So, please don’t give up. There are people who care.

          • BeaverTales

Thanks, I needed to hear that.

          • Dom Saunders

I actually agree with you 100% and I’ve been arguing much of the same for a while now. Many of the posters here basically worship the ground Hillary walks on and pretend she wasn’t in the least bit sketchy. It’s pretty much a lost cause to try and argue here even from the point of pragmatism, as I have, in regard to my support of her on the sole fact that she WASN’T Trump. As far as people here are concerned, even bringing up the fact that she was corrupt in her own way is grounds for being blamed for the “attitude” that gave us Trump.

          • saucetin

It wasn’t in 2000, either. 4,500+ soldiers lost in Iraq

She banned me from her facebook for daring to point out that I felt it beneath her to advertise cosmetics and their beneficial effects, when it was obvious she had finally had a little under eye work done… she’s more thin-skinned than I ever would have thought.

          • She’s claiming she never had any work done? It always looked to me like she had a little eye work done with every facelift. She’s been smart and still looks human unlike a lot of actors her age, but sorry she does not look like that at her age without a few trips to the “dentist”. And there’s nothing wrong with that. But why lie about it?

Sort of shocks me that she seems to be making no effort to play anyone but herself…. With an individual to portray who had such distinctive speech patterns, it shocks me that an actress with her level of talent and experience seemingly is making no effort. Even worse – Zeta-Jones as DeHaviiland! The look, the voice, absolutely NOTHING is adding up there… Thank God the real thing’s vision and hearing have gotten so bad – I’d hate for her to have to see or hear this clearly.

Need to leave her alone. Jeez. This is for America Crime Story right? What’s the crie?

      • Yalma Cuder-Zicci

The crime was republicans funding Ken Starr’s nebulous witch hunt, morphing from one dead end investigation to the next until millions of dollars later, he finally found something that stuck to Clinton.

        • Lazycrockett

          Or stuck to Monica……………………

          • Lars Littlefield

The Starr Report, which alleged that Bill Clinton had lied about the existence of the affair during a sworn deposition led to Clinton being impeached. Hmmmm . . . getting a blow job in the Oval Office and denying it, or selling off the United States to Russia. Which is worse? Hmmmmm . . .

There was a time when lying to get the nation into a needless war for oil would have been enough to impeach. Sigh.

If it was done like Glee as a musical with period music, I’d go for it. “Relax, don’t do it, when you ant to go to it….”

      • another_steve

I so miss Glee. I was an old fag gleek.

        My husband too.

        • SoCalGal20

Awww, well there’s going to be a little Glee reunion of Darren Criss (Blaine), Grant Gustin (Sebastian), and Melissa Benoist (Marley) on the Supergirl/The Flash musical eps in March. In addition, Jeremy Jordan, Jesse L. Martin, John Barrowman, and Victor Garber are also in the ep and will be singing! It airs in March.

          • Ray Taylor

            That sounds like fun.

          • SoCalGal20

I think it will be. Rachel Bloom and Pasek and Paul have each written songs for it. And from the few photos I’ve seen from filming (they’re filming the eps now) it looks like they’re having fun.

          • another_steve

            Thanks for the info. 😉

I’m convinced that 50 years from now, TV historians will cite Glee as one of the groundbreaking TV series of the early 2000’s.

That plus there was some very excellent (synthetically tuned, but who cares) music in it. And some decent acting.

My man and I miss it.

          • SoCalGal20

Yes, it was something special. The time the show was on was a pretty interesting time for me personally. Met a lot of Glee fandom friends during that time who are friends to this day.

I have Glee music in my car. I listen to it to and from work. 🙂

          • another_steve

Awwwww yes! I remember when the clip came out. They used to release teaser clips and one song from each episode to various entertainment outlets a few days before the episode aired. Perez Hilton got the Teenage Dream video. I was getting dinner at a restaurant after work when the video dropped. Quite a moment. Kurt and Blaine were my favorites.

            Here’s a little Glee video for Valentine’s.

            http://onlyklainescenes.tumblr.com/post/139317892155/silly-love-songs-scene-dl

Incidentally, at the time I was living in Boston. The Warblers vocals (except for Darren Criss) were actually done by the Tufts Beelzebubs. A few weeks after that aired they had their winter show which I went to. They performed Teenage Dream.

          • another_steve

            Lovely. Thanks.

The incredible diversity of characters in that series is what gets me / got to me. No one in the rainbow was excluded. They didn’t downplay the fem in Chris Colfer’s character yet at the same time didn’t ridicule or stereotype it.

Quite the revolution in TV, the whole thing.

    • SoCalGal20

I’ll watch it. If for no other reason to see their take on 90s Washington.

FUCK Susan Sarandon. Seriously. FUCK HER.

    • TuuxKabin

Could I just bite her ankles instead?

      • Millstone

To paraphrase from The Women, you can give her a pedi down to the ankles with a buzz saw or go Annie Wilkes on her (the book, with the axe and the blowtorch, not the movie).

        It’s all cool.

    • Millstone

I can’t even bring myself to visit one of her “ping pong social clubs.” (Yes, that’s really a thing.)

  • Lazycrockett
  • Jay George

I would have loved to have seen it IF they had gotten someone I could bear to look at playing Bette Davis. Davis is a beloved actress and icon. Sarandon is toilet water.

      • Jay George

Who would you have like to see play the Crawford part?

Gosh, Jay. That’s tough. Probably a British actress. Amanda Donohoe? Alex Kingston?

      • No. If the source can be believed, Donald thinks he can sue people who leak stuff about him on grounds of defamation.

He has no fucking clue he gave up that right when he swore the oath of office. But as always, it’s not the law that concerns him, but rather whether his teeny, fragile ego has been hurt.

  • Lars Littlefield

I’ll record this and watch it alone when no one can catch me. Sort of related to topic (but not by much): My mother and I were estranged for more than three decades. But one day she made an overture of peace and asked if I would like to go to a movie. She complained that she hadn’t been to a movie in 20 years. So I took her to a matinee of Mommie Dearest. I didn’t see or hear from her for at least 10 years after that. 🙂

    • bdsmjack

      Best story, EVAH.

      • bdsmjack

I had a similar experience, when MD came out.

“I never laid a hand on those fuckin’ kids!”

          • I wish Dunaway would embrace Mommie Dearest the way Patti Duke embraced Valley of the Dolls in her later years. The problem was that not that Dunaway wasn’t good. It was that she was playing high drama in unintentionally hilarious material. She should embrace how amazing that was and how beloved that performance is to a lot of people rather than running away from it.

          • Lars Littlefield

I agree. She really is major sensitive about that film.

          • Skeptical_Inquirer

My favorite scene is her being bitchy with the board that wants to boot her out and she tells them this isn’t her first rodeo.

          • No wire hangers EVERRRRRRR!

but “Don’t fuck with me boys. This ain’t my first time at the rodeo.” is pretty great. I love Joan. She was best friends with gay actor Billy Haines back when they were both in silent movies. Haines left acting because they wanted him to fake marry a woman and pretend to be straight. He had been the top male box office draw two years in a row but the Hollywood Press was starting to grow independent and the story was bound to come out eventually. Instead he became the decorator for all the stars’ homes.

          • I think something happened in the casting that wasn’t intended but always seems to happen. It happened when they cast Streep in The Devil Wears Prada. And actor that good is going to find the humanity in the character and with that we are going to find the character sympathetic. The boss in DWP isn’t supposed to be the least bit sympathetic but in the movie she is. I saw interviews with Christina Crawford but never read her book. She clearly painted her mother as a monster who should never have had children. But in Dunaway’s performance we see a troubled and insecure woman. Christina comes off as a spoiled brat and Crawford a hard-working perfectionist. I wish they’d explored some other aspects of Crawford’s life. She’d had lesbian affairs in the 20s and was best friends with gay former actor Billy Haines and his partner. (According to Christina she once told her that Haines’ was the best marriage in Hollywood.) There’s a lot there and I realize the movie was based on the book which was notorious at the time (how many SNL sketches have been based on a book??) but Crawford is a fascinating person whose life could have made a much better film. Oh well.

          • Stephen Elliot Phillips

I remember being a kid like 8 and that summer my grandmother reading MD. Her lying on the bed, knees bent with the book resting on her thighs. My grandmother was an old movie freak. Watched them all day on that old chicago cable channel. WGGS? Maybe.

          • Stephen Elliot Phillips

Vivien leigh should have a movie.

          • jsmukg

Can’t agree about Streep in Prada. She very carefully plays the role as the total megabitch it is *except* for the one scene where she is distraught, at home, without makeup, a shambles, and fried about her latest impending divorce and even more about her daughters. That scene, of course, shows that her character is in fact human, if barely so, and it is quite sympathetic. Generally, however, Miranda is hilariously odious. I do agree about Dunaway in Mommie—stupidest thing ever was the Cro-Magnon response to that brilliant movie, and the second stupidest thing was Dunaway trying to disavow and live down her great performance ever since.

          • Lars Littlefield

The sets? Hell, yes. I would love to have an enormous lush bathroom covered in shiny deep navy blue ceramic tile!

          • Lars Littlefield

Doh! It didn’t even occur to me. LOL!

        • TuuxKabin

Taxi Driver mine. After a transcontinental flight I crashed during the opening scenes. Only added to our tensions.

    • I saw MD as a teenager in the theater. I laughed so hard. No one else was laughing. Is camp just a gay thing? What is wrong with people who don’t get it?

      • bdsmjack

        YAS! Had same experience!

      • Lars Littlefield

Susan Sontag didn’t think so. But she was a Lesbian who wasn’t out of the closet when she wrote her seminal essay on camp. And if you ever read that essay you’ll most likely conclude that she never understood what she was talking about. She was too concerned about men dressing as women and lip-syncing. I’m with you. Only gay men truly understand camp. We invented it.

        • Is that still true? I meet a lot of young people who seem able to love something for it’s strangeness or awfulness. Showgirls, for example. Awful but hilariously so. And audacious. Trashy and high minded simultaneously. it’s a hard thing to pull off intentionally (unless you are John Waters) but people constantly seem to trip and land right in the middle of it. I adore Valley of the Dolls, or as I call it “The Lindsay Lohan Story” (Lindsay even looks like Patti Duke!)

          • TheThruster

Awful, but sooo goood. I’ve watched Showgirls maybe 5 times, and loved it every time. It is indeed hilarious 🙂

I was really looking forward to seeing this until I saw that Susan Sarandon was playing Bette. I don’t really have the stomach to watch her anymore.

  • tesseraction

I would’ve watched. Old Hollywood parables are my catnip. Katrina Longworth and TCM are my fix. This well-constructed dramaturgy with Sarandon, Lange, Tucci, Molina, Zeta-Jones would have been highlight of the year. No more. Bigger fish to fry.

Susan Sarandon: you ain’t no Bette.

  • Randy Left Brooklyn

Slightly OT: I wish they would have remade Whatever Happened to Baby Jane? with Diana Ross and Tina Turner.

    • That_Looks_Delicious

I had always heard that Diana Ross’ big feud was with Patti Labelle. And Mary Wilson. And Barbra Streisand. And Gladys Knight. I didn’t know about Tina Turner.

      • Randy Left Brooklyn

I don’t think she had a feud with Tina, I just think they would be perfect for the parts: the pretty little princess vs. the tough girl who came up the hard way. Patti might work too.

        • Lazycrockett

Patti is too busy killing everyone who cooks any of her food that she makes on her Cooking Show.

        • jsmukg

You mean the talent-free little bitch who slept and backstabbed her way to the top versus the brilliant, molten, earthy, overwhelmingly hot singer?

      • I’m just not picturing Tina in a feud. She’s too busy meditating or whatever to give any shits.

  • Texndoc

I wonder if they’ll do the story all the way to the Academy Awards. Bette was nominated for Best Actress, Joan wasn’t, and Crawford had sent word to all the other actresses she would accept the Oscar if they were unable to attend. She accepted for Anne Bancroft in “Miracle Worker”. Great year: “Whatever Happened to Baby Jane”, “Miracle Worker” and “To Kill a Mockingbird”.

    Here’s my ‘Mommy, Dearest’ story:

The movie came out soon after I had graduated from HS. I remember my HS pals getting together on a break, to go see a movie. I wasn’t ‘out’ at that point. I remember driving to the movie theater with my HS pals and realizing I had nothing in common with these people. It was a depressing realization.

When we got to the theatre, there were two movies playing: the one we had come to see ( which I don’t remember), and Mommy, Dearest. On a whim, I opted to see Mommy, Dearest, instead of the flick we had come to see.

My friends were better bred than I, because they all changed their minds, and came to Mommy, Dearest, too. They didn’t want me to sit in a theatre, by myself. (Little did they know, not a problem).

I laughed my ass off over Mommy, Dearest. My HS friends…not so much. They were actually disturbed at my reaction. Needless to say, that was the last time I saw those people.

That movie helped me realize that there was a ‘gay aesthetic’. And it was one I wanted to learn more about.

    I came out soon afterwards.

    • TuuxKabin

A friend in HS and I went to see “Whatever Happened To Baby Jane” he kept laughing thru the film and it became infectious. It was shortly after that we realized we could be the only two gay guys in HS. Was an eye opener.

      • bdsmjack

          • TuuxKabin

Well put. Maybe that’s why, in retrospect, and how I worked out my ‘daddy matters’ and learned to appreciate it all. Really was nothing to ‘get over’ but just accept the constant love and attraction I had for him.

    • That is exactly what happened to me! Went with friends, saw MD by myself because some idiotic movie was playing. One of my friends came over to the MD theater because the other movie had been so bad. I didn’t come out for another five years or so after that.

      • bdsmjack

Well, better late than never, right?

At my all-male HS, three of us girls sat around reading passages from the book (movie wasn’t out yet) out loud, at one of several tables surrounding an atrium. I’m pretty sure I was just at the part about “You always know where to find the BOYS and the BOOZE!”, and there was probably a “bitch” somewhere in there too, when one of the few female teachers (Biology), stopped in her tracks, retraced her steps to come halfway around, up to our table, and put her hand out at me for the book (which I surrendered).

She had it long enough to peruse a ‘graph or two, handed it back, and walked back on her way.

All without saying a single word or ever mentioning it again.

    • Daveed_WOW

There sure is a gay aesthetic. Also during the eighties, we chortled when President Reagan said the work “discoteque” in reference to a terrorist attack. I know innocent people were killed, but hearing Reagan say “discoteque” was just so damn funny. All my relatives started hating me the day I laughed at that. Are we seeing the vestiges of Manafort’s Russia machinations after they were inherited by Bannon the alt-nutjob?

The chaos and breitbartesque attempts at messaging sure seem to indicate that. Just an opinion. Bannon can’t effectively message outside of the BB bubble. It shows. Manafort at least had a degree of control of the situation, there was that moment in time during the campaign where Trump was calmer and less crazy. Yeah, didn’t last long.

Is Bannon piggybacking off of Manafort’s work, but doing it BADLY? And, here we’re dealing with advisors of the Manfort reign clashing with Bannon’s alt-right advisors, a shit ton of cross purposes with tangential commonality.

Not sure I’m describing this right.

What I’m trying to say is I think Trump was 100% aware of Flynn’s discussions, cuz that’s who he was listening to at the time. Then when another faction has his attention he regurgitates their messaging.

Reason I say this is, “He only hires the best people.”

Trump is insane, maybe it’s early symptoms of dementia. That’s my opinion.

I hope Jill Stein’s role is looked at as well.
Let’s not forget she was also at the Putin dinner and did everything she could to make sure Democratic voters didn’t turn out by touting Wikileaks and going to every single swing state she could to discourage Democrats from turning out.
IMO,she’s not a nieve fool, she was working with Russia just like Flynn and Manafort were.

    • Jay George

I think so too. She’s in place to do what the Green party does best, drain votes away from democrats.

  • Lazycrockett
    • Bryan

This needs to be screeched endlessly, she WON, they shouldn’t get to cheat, take a demerit and walk away with the prize anyway.

  • houstonray

I’m so beyond words furious about all this.

If it is proven that his campaign colluded with Russia to swing the election, I don’t give a shit about access to the President or return favors, blah blah…the results of the election are illegitimate! He is not a legitimate president and not only is HE not legitimate, his entire administration is not either, and I believe the results of the election should be overturned and given to the person who would have won (and did of course win the popular vote) had it not been for the interference of a fucking FOREIGN GOVERNMENT!

A foreign government STOLE our election…think about that! They STOLE the results, they TOOK it from the American people. Even those who voted for Trump, or voted for Stein (and don’t get me started on her possible involvement with Russia) or those who sat out because they wanted Bernie and didn’t want to vote for “her”. That was directly because RUSSIA decided for them that they needed to feel Hillary was bad so Russia could get their man in office. And they did.

And when it all comes out, there needs to be a movement to get him and everything he’s done out of DC and put in the person who would have won had there been NO INFLUENCE. Not Paul Ryan, not another Republican pick…President Hillary Rodham Clinton, the rightful President of the United States.

    • another_steve

It’s not enough to establish that Russia influenced the election in order to get Trump elected. It has to be established beyond a shadow of a doubt that Trump operatives colluded with Russian operatives to make that happen.

Telephone transcripts. Email transcripts. Someone to step forward and testify to it.

      That’s the big kahuna now.

      • BobSF_94117

It’s not enough to establish that Russia influenced the election in order to get Trump elected.

Sure it is. “We’ll fix that in four years” is not the response of any rational nation.

    • OdieDenCO

what do we do about all the down ballot races? Are they tainted too? As much as I’d like to see Hillary in office, the whole of the election cycle needs to be redone. One month to prepare, one month of primary, one month of general. the other question is who governs the country while we reorganize?

      • houstonray

Ooooh, good point. I didn’t think about that. I’d be ok with a “do over” but as you said that would be a “do-over” for all the down ballot races.

        Sigh…

        God I hate this.

      • -M-

Harder to do. And having Clinton to act as a check on the GOP congress (not to mention make the appointments) would be a drastic improvement.

    • Max_1

      @houstonray thisthisthisthis!!!!!

    • Jay George

So well said and I agree with every word. <3

  • Sam_Handwich

Sphincter’s press briefing tomorrow should be interesting, since this is what he claimed today

    https://twitter.com/ABCPolitics/status/831583725418733569

    • Lazycrockett

The best thing The Sphincter could do was come out tomorrow and just start by saying I’m told to say what I say by Drumpf. Take it up with him.

      • OdieDenCO

he should come out tomorrow with a prop box and do a Melissa McCarthy impression of a spicy press conference. And, at the end shout out “Live from DC I resign”

    • Dreaming Vertebrate

      Awkward!!

    • So far we’ve seen no one in Cheetolini’s administration who isn’t 100% comfortable telling baldfaced lies. Spicy is no exception.

It’s also worth remembering Pence is equally glib with lies. Remember how he denied during his VP debate that Donald had said what he was on tape saying?

      http://www.thedailybeast.com/articles/2016/10/05/watch-mike-pence-shakes-his-head-at-things-that-are-true.html

    • Daveed_WOW

I’m sure Trump’s attorney’s are ordering him to shut up his stupid mouth (piece). I suspect all his smart phones were taken away as well. We won’t have any more press conferences from this administration.

  • Lumpy Gaga

Please remember: Dan Rather (teh kerning!) and the NY Times were both trolled by the W. machine for their own purposes.

This gang has bigger, loftier goals – finishing the press off, for one.

    Don’t inadvertently help them.

And Sulzburger! Oh! Don’t get me started! Is he here? (ObJoanRivers)

    • One piece of Rather’s reporting was based on weak — but not disproven — evidence. Dubya DID go AWOL from his cushy Nat Guard stint and it was covered up by a politically connected friend of the family.

In that case, Rather wasn’t trolled so much as rat-fucked by experts who managed to undermine his credibility and get him fired without giving him a chance to defend himself.

The difference then is the Republicans were still competently able to carry out rat-fucking at the highest media levels. They seem not so good at it these days.

I agree, be careful not to promote false shit and thus be discredited. But now is also not the time to be overly cautious to the point of silence.

  • joe ho

Boycott anything and everything that Susan Slurandon has touched.

    • Lazycrockett

      even young Tim Robbins?

      • joe ho

he’s a far left spoiler, too. even though he finally grudgingly voted for HRC.

        • Ninja0980

Indeed, what he did in NY helped poison the well for the rest of the primaries.

  • dafs

Ugh, Ryan Murphy. Just bankroll another few seasons of American Crime Story, and get the hell out of here.

  • Sam_Handwich

CNN says they have sources, too

High-level advisers close to then-presidential nominee Donald Trump were
in constant communication during the campaign with Russians known to US
intelligence, multiple current and former intelligence, law enforcement
    and administration officials tell CNN
    http://www.cnn.com/2017/02/14/politics/donald-trump-aides-russians-campaign/index.html?sr=twcnni021517donald-trump-aides-russians-campaign0325AMVODtopVideo&linkId=34512718

    • Lazycrockett

CNN is gonna throw so much shade during the last days of the Drumpf administration.

    • “Constant communication.”

      Read that again: Constant communication.

People might stay in constant communication with the family. I’m in constant communication with my business clients. Neither of these is nefarious in any normal context.

There is no non-nefarious context or reason for Trump campaign people to be in constant communication with Russian intelligence officials. This is prima facie evidence of coordination and collusion, even if communications were kept from surveillance through encryption or other means. As the saying goes, absence of evidence is not evidence of absence.

This is gonna get very interesting and very strange over the coming days and weeks, as if the last year hasn’t been already…

(Let’s also not forget just how quickly a Sputnik propaganda piece found itself in Donald’s tiny hands on the campaign trail.)

  • Lazycrockett
    • Sam_Handwich
      • another_steve

        This is looking very bad.

        Very bad indeed.

        • Or, as some might view it, very good, very good indeed.

If the GOPers keep stonewalling and excusing, this could ruin them, too.

      • Skeptical_Inquirer

I do think the election should be considered Fubared. The last thing I want is for the GOP to be rewarded no matter if Donald gets bounced or not.

        • Ninja0980

Indeed, just looked how they clamped down on any information about Russia interfering in our elections.

          • Skeptical_Inquirer

This really needs to be presented as the treason it is.

I would be unhappy if Trump had won fair & square but coordinated and handwaved treason on the highest level from an FBI chief, generals and an entire political party? People really need to break out the pitchforks and torches for real.

          • billbear1961

            YES!!

          • billbear1961

With plenty of help from LAZY and COMPLICIT media, who preferred SLANDERING Hillary Clinton to doing hard work digging up and exposing Trump’s Russian connections!!

          • Jay George
      • Dreaming Vertebrate

The only thing that could be more damaging for Drumpf, would be the serendipitous release of the pee-pee tapes.

        • Lazycrockett

The dossier seems to suggest the the pee tapes are nothing compared what else the Russians have.

          • DaddyRay

I am guessing naughty things at Miss Teen Universe

          • Skeptical_Inquirer

Considering Donald was accused of raping a 13 year old, I can only guess that he was caught actually on tape with someone of that age for him to be so damn worried about it.

          • Lazycrockett

Im sure Russia had no problem giving Drumpf 12 year old girls to fuck while there.

          • AJ Drew

and claimed the hotel room as a business expense on his tax returns…

          • That’s been my guess all along.

Besides being mentally nuts, what else is his greatest vulnerability?

Young girls. He didn’t even try to hide it back in the day. I imagine in counterintelligence it takes work to find someone’s weakness, but his are out there on constant display.

        • another_steve

This is potentially worse than the pee-pee tapes.

With the pee-pee tapes, he’ll fall on his knees, ask Jesus for forgiveness, and his party will sigh a sigh of relief.

This could potentially get him impeached.

          • billbear1961

It is incredible that it only could get him impeached.

If such a CRIME doesn’t get him impeached and convicted, this government is OBVIOUSLY no longer LEGITIMATE!!

Christ, I cannot believe I have to actually SAY THAT!!

            I’m going to LOSE IT!!

I’m going to LOSE MY MIND!!

    • Lazycrockett

Catherine must be really small cause Joy is towering over her also.

I know, it’s like Land of the Giant Smart Women

        • Lazycrockett

I adore Joan have for years.

LOL! I literally said the exact same thing to my hubby. That was odd, not sure if it was just the camera angle or what.

      • ByronK

LOL, I know, I was expecting Joan to stand up and stomp through a little Japanese village or something. 😉

        • houstonray

          HA!!!!!!

It the vodka! ha, thanks for that. (and yes, Rampell looked very very tiny!)

Can you imagine if a DEMOCRAT said that–CAN YOU?!

        • AJ Drew

Yup, I feel the dizzying dissonance too. The USA is in new political territory here, BUT… this is a true test of our check-and-balances system. Perhaps (I hope, I hope…) this is akin to how real estate and stock market bubbles create their own reset. (Not an apt comparison, I know, and yet, given DT, maybe it is apt.)

Perhaps this shit-show will reset the system, or create it anew and better once this admin is kicked out (and it will be, I truly believe that.)

The truly scary bit, is… how will that happen? When our Intelligence Community is suddenly aligning, anything could happen, good or bad.

    • Skeptical_Inquirer

I wonder if seeing Trump as President is worth being known as the FBI chief who sold out his country to Putin in the history books. I only wish that this asshole would lose not only his social circle but respect from the people below him in the agency. Unfortunately, for all we know, most of the FBI might be Comey-ish.

      • Stephen Elliot Phillips

Comey got a midnight call about a nice fat golden parachute by one of the cock brothers. Comey got his. Fuck the rest of us

      • Jay George

The FBI has shown itself capable of some intensely dirty tricks in the past. Comey’s actions may be right up there at the top with some of the crap Hoover pulled.

    • Ninja0980

Comey only cared about hurting Democrats up and down the ballot.
I love Obama but his big blunders of trying to reach across the aisle hurt him again and again, Comey the worst of all.

      • Jay George

The republicans never do it and neither should the dems. They need a dose of what they’ve been dishing out handed back to them.

    • Yep. And monstrously more nakedly partisan, too.

    • billbear1961

Say it: Comey is a goddamned TRAITOR!!

    • greenmanTN

I don’t know if the Kremlin has pics of Comey diddling an underage girl or boy, but that move stunk to high heaven. There was nothing new about his dramatic reveal, not an indictable offense, nothing. That motherfucker asserted himself, against all regulations, into a Presidential election.

    • Max_1

      Comey is the lynchpin…

  • DaddyRay

Just sit right back and you’ll hear a tale
A tale of a fateful trip
    That started with Paul Manafort
    And a dictatorship

The mate was an Indiana man
    The captain immature
Trump’s cabinet set sail that day on a four year tour, a four year tour

    The weather started getting rough
    Then Flynn was double crossed
And when the Gen’ral spilled the beans
The Pres’dency was lost, the Pres’dency was lost

Then Trump set ground on the shore of this uncharted desert bay
With Michael Pence, Sean Spicer too,
    Rex Tillerson and his wife
    Melania
    Nikki Haley and Kellyanne
    In Guantanamo Bay

    • houstonray

Nicely done!!! I just sang it to my hubby, he said “WOW!”

  • Lumpy Gaga

If nothing else, I hope Melissa McCarthy’s SNL work gets the WH briefing room to the point where they just start laughing as soon as he walks out.

    • billbear1961

      Yes!

At this point WHY should they believe ANYTHING he says unless it can be verified by reliable sources?

      He’s a JOKE!

Only while MM is funny, the real BASTARD is NOT!!

    • DaddyRay

The media should have a five second delay so they have time to add a laugh track to the White House Press briefings

  • IAMBOWLINGGREEN
  • Lazycrockett

“You just sign everything we put on your desk and no one gets hurt.”

    • billbear1961

Then the current government–the Executive AND Legislative branches–is ILLEGITIMATE.

      And their authority is FORFEIT!!

      Talk about a constitutional CRISIS!!

      • houstonray

And then we the people must take to the streets in outrage and protest the likes of which the world has never seen….

        • billbear1961

Yes, it would be up to US!!

          The gods help us!!

        • Lazycrockett

Then again killing off the Koch brothers would send a pretty clear message. All revolutions are greased on blood.

They’ll impeach him the second they smell that Donnie is past the point of being more useful than dangerous. They always planned on impeaching him, let’s be honest. They just grinned and hoped to rush their agendas in early.

But at this rate, they may cut their losses and Dump Trump by the end of the week.

  • DaddyRay

How long before the only response we get from Sean Spicer at White House Press Conferences is “I Refuse to Answer on the Grounds That It May Incriminate Me.”

    • billbear1961

At this rate, less than a week.

    • AJ Drew

Yeah, but, isn’t that giving him too much credit? I am fully willing to believe that he knows nothing.

Michael Flynn’s ironic speech from the 2016 GOP Convention has rightfully been making the rounds today.

“If I ….a guy who knows this business…if I did a tenth, a tenth of what she did….

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gvZ6M1dk2c4

    • Skeptical_Inquirer

Dear Mr. Flynn, please set an example by driving yourself to a cell.

here’s another shocking headline none of us could have possibly anticipated

ICE cancels meeting to discuss immigration raids with Congressional Hispanic Caucus leaders

    • billbear1961

Of course, the goddamned NAZIS have cancelled!

    • Cuberly

      Sheesh!

    • Skeptical_Inquirer

They should threaten their budget for their no-show.

    • Lazycrockett

They picked up the first Dreamer tonight.

    • That_Looks_Delicious

The raids are having all kinds of impacts. There was a report on a Connecticut station that showed all these empty restaurants in New Haven, but the restaurant owners’ daughter noted that even though the dining room was empty, their delivery orders were skyrocketing. In other words, people are afraid to go out of the house! And this as a result of the recent raids in NY, because iCE didn’t even do any raids in CT.

      • Jay George

One of my NYC facebook friends said ICE agents were standing at the subway entrances in Queens just pulling people out and demanding to see their paperwork.

        • We have, I believe, an outside maximum of six months before the America we knew is irrevocably gone.

          • Jay George

            I’m so afraid you’re right.

          • What’s more dismaying: That’s exactly what I said to my wife the night of Nov 8th: “Unless this turns out nowhere nearly as bad as I fear, I think we’ve got maybe until June before it’s too late.”

I wanted so bad to be wrong. Unfortunately, the Republicans seem to be fine with what’s happening.

          • Lumpy Gaga

  • Max_1

    Russia colluded with the FBI?
Or did the FBI cover up the collusion between Trump/Co and Russia?

Isn’t covering up an act of collusion, too?

    • Personally, I doubt it. Just my opinion, but I think Comey just wanted a GOP win, period. The reasons one chooses to conceal a crime can vary quite a lot, ranging from “involved up to one’s neck” to “approving of the expected results of not saying anything.”

Like witnessing a bank robbery. The right thing to do is report it. But suppose a bag splits open and several stacks of money fall out at your feet. You only get to keep it if you stay quiet.

Now imagine those stacks of money are instead an FBI unfettered by oversight and granted broad authority in the U.S. to do whatever the hell it wants, no question. I think THAT was what Comey wanted and was hoping for, to be America’s new Stasi, and what was also clearly hoped by others in the FBI.

But not all of them are absent patriotism or a sense of duty to the American people. In fact, probably not even a majority. But as they say, the fish rots from the head down — and here it begins with Comey.

      • Max_1

        BeccaM
Do you think Comey, as Director of the FBI, didn’t see Trump/Co collusion with Russia as criminal behavior? If he didn’t see it as criminal, then we can claim him unfit for duty due to his inability to keep American Elections safe from foreign involvements… If he did see it as a crime and covered it up because of the possible “win” then he’s shown his inability to faithfully execute his duty as Director of the FBI. I’m not giving that slimeball one inch of wiggle room.

        • Me neither. He’s got to go. I’m just saying sometimes motives vary.

Was Comey actually *involved* with the criminal activities? Possibly not. Did he aid in covering them up? Seems increasingly certain. Both are crimes, but not the exact same one.

          • Max_1

I get that… Yet, he CHOSE to remain silent.
He put Party before Country… And the Constitution, which he swore to uphold, but CHOSE not to… SAD.

          • I agree with you 100%.

          • jsmukg

Violating the Hatch Act, flagrantly, is enough of a crime.

      • Cuberly

“…I think Comey just wanted a GOP win, period….”

Yep. BIG mistake on Obama’s part.

        • Max_1

I was going to ask: What did Obama know and when did he know it?

However, Obama isn’t in Office now and the problem is… So we need to focus.

Again: IF Justice was truly blind, she wouldn’t be worried about the optics… Loretta Lynch chose to be swayed by “OPTICS” and stuck us with Trump. IMO.

However, like I said, the problem is in Office and he needs to be deposed. Focus…

      • AJ Drew

ehhh… BUT, he was the FBI Director. Sure, maybe he had some personal axe to grind, but he had to know the potential fallout, so it seems there just has to be more to it. But… maybe not. ?

There is a reason Republicans dare not talk of Treason…

Hey I quite enjoy getting the queen size bed all to myself on the regular.

      • Cuberly

Ooooooo….funny you said that. Bought a new mattress last month. Queen size. Gotta admit, having the room has been sorta kinda cool.

Never had a full foam mattress before, damn is that thing comfortable.

        • DaddyRay

I used to enjoy memory foam mattresses until I took a trip to Puerto Rico and stayed at a villa where the dehumidifier was broken. It felt like I was sleeping on a wet sponge that had soaked up sweat and fluids from 1,000 guests before me

          Never Again

          • Cuberly

Can’t stand memory foam mattresses. Slept on one a few years ago and it was awful. I tend to sleep hot, and I felt like I was sleeping in a half baked meatloaf. If felt horrible.

Before I chose this I visited 2 different mattress stores. It was basically like buying a used car. Was descended upon by sales people and when I told them what I was looking for they kept trying to upsell me to things I didn’t want to pay for.

I’m happy with what I got.

But they turned off the recorders when Donald spoke with his puppetmaster, Vladimir.

        • Lars Littlefield

Regarding that one particular phone call, as well as ALL OF THEM, Trump and company may have turned off the speaker phone, but for damn sure the US Intelligence community has recorded every word or every conversation and is ready to confront everyone with that fact. There are no private conversations.

          • I agree with you. And thus I find myself hoping, hoping, hoping those calls are leaked.

In the tweet thread: reports suggest communications AND financial transactions are being investigated.

But so far reports have focused solely on communications.

There was something about Trump having a direct line of communication–online–with a Russian bank–I think it was–reported during the election campaign.

They shut it down, only to open a NEW line shortly afterwards.

Media hardly touched the story, like it was nothing important.

Best story ever.:’I invited a friend and her new boyfriend over for a 4th of July dinner. I had also just broken up with a male partner of 13 years.

For the first time in years I went to a gay bar, so my friend asked if I enjoyed myself. Actually, no I didn’t so, being a total smart aleck I said, “The only thing that place needs is a clock tower and a rifle salesman,” obliquely referencing the infamous shooting spree by Charles Whitman from the clock tower of the University of Texas in Austin.

My friend looked at me and said, “John’s sister was shot by Charles Whitman.” Oh holy fucking shit.

Let’s parse this a bit. I made a dark joke about a spree killer, right in front of the brother of one of his victims. The odds against that are astronomical.

I don’t know how I manage it, but somehow I always put my foot in my mouth.

There is not one fact being reported now that was not obvious to anyone paying attention during the campaign. Hillary Clinton repeatedly raised the subject of Trump’s compromising Russia ties during the Presidential debates. The New York Times and most other press bought all of Comey’s lies, and downplayed the Trump story in favor of stories about Clinton’s emails. Now they’re all trying to make up for lost time. And that’s good. But let’s not pretend this is new.
I never thought I would say this but thank God for Jeff Bezos and the Washington Post, who never lost sight of the story.
I am betting the Oroville Dam will outlast Trump. At least even money as of this evening.

Somewhat OT: Since Ivanka’s brand is actually suffering some actual damage (and the Apprentice didn’t do so hot and I can’t see any other producer eager to work with Trump especially if a tape actually does come out and it involves CHILD ABUSE), what we need to do is go after some of the billionaire parasites.

Besides Tillerson’s involvement with Exxon, there’s also Betty Devos’ involvement with Amway & Orlando Magic.

    OT: GOP men are pigs

Pregnant women’s bodies are ‘hosts’, says US lawmaker
    http://www.stuff.co.nz/world/americas/89399634/pregnant-womens-bodies-are-hosts-says-us-lawmaker?cid=facebook.post.89399634

A US lawmaker has described pregnant women as “hosts” whose bodies do not belong to them.

Republican politician Justin Humphrey, from southeast Oklahoma, made the comments while discussing his bill requiring women seeking an abortion to first obtain the written informed consent of the father. The bill is scheduled for a hearing on Tuesday in a House committee.

“I believe one of the breakdowns in our society is that we have excluded the man out of all of these types of decisions,” he said.

“I understand that they feel like that is their body,” he said of women. “I feel like it is a separate – what I call them is you’re a ‘host’.”

    • Skeptical_Inquirer

As pointed out elsewhere, if the man can demand she stay pregnant does that then mean he can demand she have an abortion? Uh, huh, we know what it’s REALLY about.

I always notice that they never demand women have any sort of control over men’s genitals, call men slutty for using Viagra or penis pumps, and never push harder for deadbeat dads to pay up or prevent male rapists from using family court to harass their victims if she actually does bring the fetus to term.

That a huge % of women vote for assholes like Humphrey boggles my mind.

I loathe forced birthers because I point a lot of this out to them and they’re all “It could never happen in America” then they admit they voted for TWump as if it was an act of martyrdom to vote for a loathsome man for the opportunity to shit on women for decades.

      • DaddyRay

My brother, who is a devout Southern Baptist, was very outspoken about his objection to abortion as well as birth control … that is until my 15 yo niece missed her period and was so upset that she confessed that she had been having sex. She didn’t end up being pregnant but my brother and sister-in-law started my niece on birth control.

They always want to control other people but there are different rules when it is about them.

In their mind they have good reasons for their abortion, but everyone else is still a baby murdering slut.

        • there’s a pretty long list of thugs who have made careers out of opposing abortion, but taken their little brats to get one when the time came for the inevitable fail of religion and ideology to overcome teen hormones.

Despite the uncertainties, the reports [of regular contact between Russian intelligence and Trump campaign aides] are threatening to the Trump administration on a number of levels.

    (1) They flatly contradict White House spokesman, Sean Spicer, who on Tuesday repeated his earlier assertions that there had been no pre-election contacts between the Trump team and Russian officials. Last month, Trump himself also denied any such contacts.

    (2) They pile further pressure on the Republican congressional leadership to launch committee hearings on Russian election interference that were promised, but have so far failed to materialise.

    (3) They are a further sign that intelligence officials are willing to leak extensively against the Trump administration, making it extremely risky for the White House to try to shut down investigations into collusion with Moscow that are reportedly being carried out by several intelligence agencies.

    (4) They add circumstantial weight to the reports on the Trump campaign’s Kremlin links compiled last year and passed to the FBI by a former MI6 officer, Christopher Steele. His reports alleged active, sustained and covert collusion to subvert the election which, if confirmed, could constitute treason.

Trump’s world is built on loyalty, loyalty that goes both ways. The problem with that structure arises when someone does something wrong, especially if they do it in service to the leader. The leader chooses to remain loyal, but in doing so, he way well betray the loyalty he has towards others. In Trump’s fact-free business world, that’s not so much of a problem. In government, he’s shown it isn’t much of a problem either if you are a blustering, full-time liar and deflector, but everyone must be on the same page for that to happen. If Flynn had told Pence the truth, I have little doubt Pence would have gone along with whatever fabrication they would have concocted to kill the story. Instead, he didn’t trust Team Trump — of which he was a part — to have his back. Once the mutual loyalty is broken, ruh-roh…

No Sarandon for me. Besides, hasn’t this been done to death by every drag queen ever?

The anecdotes about Mommie Dearest and Baby Jane on this thread are the most delightful things I have ever read on JMG. I woke up in the middle of the night last night and couldn’t go back to sleep, so I went to JMG for comfort. I was smiling ear-to-ear after reading those anecdotes for at least an hour which didn’t make it any easier for me to go back to sleep.

I love Joan Crawford. She is my favorite actress, with second place being shared by Greta Garbo (whose birthday is the same day as mine, one of my primary claims to fame), Gloria Swanson (just for Sunset Boulevard alone, but some of her silents are also pretty wonderful), Ruby Keeler (no, I’m not kidding; I spent last August 20 parked in front of TCM for the whole day when they were dedicating a day to her for the first time), and Divine (who is so wonderful in Hairspray which has become something of a franchise).

Ironically, I didn’t know anything about Joan at the time of her death in 1977 (same year as Maria Callas, another of my icons). I thought she was just an old woman who made horror movies. It took seeing Mommie Dearest and shortly after that Mildred Pierce on the big screen to start discovering who she was.

Sadly, I can’t watch either Baby Jane or Mommie Dearest nowadays. I can’t watch Baby Jane because I love Joan so much that I can’t stand to see her be abused, even in that camp context and even if it was her fault. As for Mommie Dearest, it probably hits too close to home. I still joke with friends each May that I can’t do anything on that day because I have to stay home and celebrate by watching Mommie Dearest and Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf?

When I was growing up, a lot of people commented that my mother bore a strong resemblance to Elizabeth Taylor. I didn’t really see it, but my mother became a bad alcoholic later in life, and in Virginia Woolf the resemblance was pretty eerie.

I loved Lars’ tale of taking his mother to see Mommie Dearest. I probably would never have thought of such a genius thing; besides, I didn’t voluntarily spend time with my mother in her later years. On top of that, she died in 1981, a few months before Mommie Dearest came out (also on Greta Garbo’s birthday), so it’s a moot point anyway.

I’m looking forward to this movie. The so-called feud/rivalry of Bette and Joan is the stuff of Hollywood legend…plus, it is a miracle that “Whatever Happened To Baby Jane”, was ever made in the first place with these two film greats. I think both Jessica and Susan really portray Joan and Bette bang on, especially Susan, with her uncanny resemblance to Bette. I’m not into politics and won’t ever discuss politics or religion, as that is personal to every individual and I respect one’s beliefs, as I would want the same accorded for myself. Anyway, it is a shame that Bette and Joan weren’t reunited for “Hush Hush Sweet Charlotte”, which was made a few years later. Olivia de Havilland took over the role that Joan was to portray. Joan could have had payback to Bette and be abusive to her character…and maybe on the set as well…lol 😉 ….I know Bette was really disappointed not to have won the Oscar for “Baby Jane”, as she was pretty vocal about it. It did not help with Bette’s and Joan’s disdain for one another, when upon Oscar night, Joan accepted “happily” the Oscar for best actress, on absent winner, Anne Bancroft’s behalf (for “The Miracle Worker”)… I’m sure Bette was fuming in the audience. I also love another story Bette told for when they were making “Baby Jane”. It was for the scene when Bette was to lift Joan out of the bed she was restrained in, when things were coming to a head in the story line. Bette, who was experiencing back pain, told Joan NOT to be ‘dead weight’ and kinda help, to spare Bette’s bad back. Well, good ol’ Joan ended up being the deadest weight she could be…and poor Bette ended up in the hospital. So, Joan had her revenge at times…lol . I just love them, despite any controversies, feuds, etc…after all that’s Hollywood. 🙂
